my project needs: a navbar, a section about me, a portfolio section, maybe some contact info (for example)
then write what you CAN-- hmm, i dont know anything about nav bars, guess ill google that (many use bootstrap on that one, their docs are pretty easy understand, http://getbootstrap.com )

@Sophietica It just makes sense right? I'm still very much an amateur learning the ropes. And the ropes all teach the "vanilla" way to writing code. The irony of how challenging it is to learn to use APIs and other tools is funny to me.

thanks for helping
Your a element should have the anchor text of "cat photos".
You need an a element that links to http://freecatphotoapp.com
Make sure your a element has a closing tag.

@david-gagne I'm in a weird position. I was a total CSS/HTML meister until about 8 years ago. It's freaky how things are common now (hello, responsive sites!) that were non-existent then. But that's also part of the fun of this line of work. never a dull day.

@ender554 : @rphares speaks the truth. A lot of web development is Google, google, forum, stackexchange, google....it's totally fine not to know off the top of your head, or not to now at all. Frankly, I still google some basic things (was it vertical-align: middle or centre )

@david-gagne from the look of it, it seems your layout is broken because of some nesting issues with your code. I do not think it is related to javascript but to the HTML itself. For example, right before the footer you have a closing </div> tag inside an <a></a> element while it should be outside. I already mentioned to you the the <fieldset> element should be inside the <form> one. I suggest you review your entire code and look for other tag nesting errors. ;)

how to add two style elements. One w/ red text and including a larger font
Sophietica

Jun 01 2016 01:00
OK the <img> element has a bunch of attribute. One is src, the source of the image. That tells the browser where to find it. In your exercise, you don't want to change where to find it, but how it shows. So you need to add a new attribute: a class.

Jun 01 2016 03:05
@bsycrupt, I am attempting that, but it seems not to work. For example, I'm trying this. Although I doubt you can give filter two arguments:

function destroyer(arr) {
  // Remove all the values
  newArray=arr.filter(filterFunction, arguments[1]);
  return newArray;
}

function filterFunction(value)
{
  if(value===arguments[1])
  {
    return false;
  }
  else
  {
    return true;
  }
}

destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);
The above is just a test of course.
I'm trying to just get 2 to filter with the above code.
But that wont even work.
Its not going to do anything with three yet, I just want it to at least do 2.
bscyrpt
@bscyrpt
Jun 01 2016 03:07
why do you need two arguments, filterFunction is called for each item in the array?
robertky
@robertky
Jun 01 2016 03:08
Because it needs to filter out those specific numbers in destroyer.
So, first argument is the "base" array.
Second and third argument are the numbers to filter out.
I am passing the array with filter to the other function.
But don't know how to get that particular function to take in the "filter" numbers.
If I knew, I could just put them in an if statment and move on.

looking at it now-- you have some buttons. they look like this, for example: <button class="btn btn-block btn-info">Info</button> @tbishop225
they should be nested as @bscyrpt said, <div class="col-xs-4><button>whatever</button></div>
you can see where bscrypt put the button in the example-- thats where you use the buttons you already have, and open and close the divs around each one

this:

<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-4">
<div class="col-xs-4">
<div class="col-xs-4">

from your code, isn't quite right,

from the looks of it, it wants you to split the arr object into pieces, first one being the array to process, then you build up another array out of other args to get what to filter looping through based on array.length not counting the 0 index, the take the first array and apply filter by the second array
robertky
@robertky
Jun 01 2016 03:35
@bscrypt, I did this and it passed, but seems semi cheating:

function destroyer(arr) {
  // Remove all the values
  var arg1=arguments[1];
  var arg2=arguments[2];
  var arg3=arguments[3];
  var results=arr.filter(function(value){
    return value!==arg1 && value!==arg2 && value!==arg3;
  });

  return results;
}

function filterFunction(value)
{
  if(value===arguments[1])
  {
    return false;
  }
  else
  {
    return true;
  }
}

destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);
Ignore the second function, it doesnt do anything.
bscyrpt
@bscyrpt

it works for current example, but if you want to go deeper, if you add in more than 3 args it breaks/doesn't work so write it where it loops throguh the args.length instead of explicitly list each arg
so you have array that you push values into to build arg list

@bscyrpt , I get what your saying, I guess I'm having issues thinking of how you would loop through those arguments.
Then use filter.
If I do that, it will return the array filter of one result.
Then go to next argument, and now we just filter that result.
So, in the end, only the last argument is filtered correctly.
I would have to somehow filter all the arguments at once to make it work right.
I would think.
bscyrpt
@bscyrpt
Jun 01 2016 03:46
so you know arg[0] = array of the elements, all other arg[n] = stuff to get
so loop through starting from 1 instead of 0 to skip first, to arg.length-1 and push arg[i] into 2nd array

copy and paste the whole code you pasted here OVER your code in the editor,
so, replace the whole lesson with your own code
while people look for something I'm missing (you are on "Change Text Inside an Element Using jQuery", right? )
sometimes it gets glitchy, and pasting into the editor after a refresh will do the trick,

I'm trying to pull data for an array from a textbox when a button is clicked (not get/post processing, just a simple html page pull).
But i keep getting different errors as I tweak things.

Is my method even close to being a correct implementation of this?

My HTML:

<label for="">Test Array Creation </label><input type="textbox" name="array"></input><br>
<button onClick="createArray()">Create Array</button>

My JS:

function createArray() {
  var str = document.getElementByName('array')[0].value;
  var usersArray = str.split(",");
  document.write(userArray);
}

@ivancibrian just add the html link in the head and then go to css and make a body tag.
body {
and add the css to it
you dont have to add it to h2 separately

All browsers need the doctype. Without the DOCTYPE you are forcing the browsers to render in Quirks Mode.

However, DOCTYPE was only partially used by the browsers in determining dialect and parsing, even though that was the purpose. This is why HTML5 has reduced the DOCTYPE to simply:

@sidsub007 "The author of the form assigns a value to the NAME attribute. Use the same name for all of the radio buttons in each group, this way the user is limited to exactly one option in the group. "
Siddharth Subhankar
@sidsub007
Jun 01 2016 06:21
@priyankark but then we use the name attribute for the checkbox type input as well and it allows for multiple options in the group right? so why this discrepancy?
Priyankar Kumar
@priyankark
Jun 01 2016 06:23
Well thats the difference between radio and checkbox. radio is used when you want users to only select one item from the group. Checkbox allows for multiple selection.

Siddharth Subhankar

@priyankark so the use of the name attribute is primarily to group together one cohesive set of radio or checkboxes?
Priyankar Kumar
@priyankark
Jun 01 2016 06:27
The primary use of name for any element is that it allows the form to submit those data which have this attribute to the server. And yes, for checkboxes and radio, its what you mentioned as well. At-least thats how I understood it.

@priyankark i understood that but what i mean is the difference between classes and ids
@priyankark i can put a background color or font style, size or family using either one of those.

The tectbook definiton of div is that it is a block level element and as mentioned it is a way of organizing and styling groups of data or whatever together. A div can have a class associated and also an id. An id is something that is used to uniquely identify any element and then we can use that id in our CSS or javascript to manipulate it the way we want.
Okay. I got your question.

@priyankark I understood that div is completely different. I just need the difference between classes and ids because right now they seem very similar in application

Well a class is somewhat similar to an id. But it is much more generic. Multiple elements can have the same classes associated with them but will have a unique id.

An example I can give is this: You belong to the 'class' human and I do too. But we each have a unique ID.

hi i am stuck with change the font size of an element challenge
<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}
</style>
<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>
<style>
.red-text {
color:red;
}
p {
font-size: 16px;
}
</style>
<style>
.red-text{
color:red;
}
p1 {
font-size: 16px;
}
</style>
what's wrong?

Create a second p element with the following kitty ipsum text: Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.

Inside the same <style> tag that contains your red-text class, create an entry for p elements and set the font-size to 16 pixels (16px).

here is the challenge

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:08
@ilginsu you only want to have one set of style tags
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:08
.p makes font-size smaller
yes but i could not make it
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:08
you only need to define .red-text class and p selector once
Emmanuelle DeBarge
@emmanuelledebarge
Jun 01 2016 07:09
@ilginsu p class="red-text"
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:09
p class is not accepted
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:09
also you want to remove that p1 selector
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:09
but i have 2 p elements
Emmanuelle DeBarge
@emmanuelledebarge
Jun 01 2016 07:09
@ilginsu you only need one p element
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:09
ok
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:09

Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:09

thanks
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:09
it basically says wherever there's a p tag, make the font size 16px
Emmanuelle DeBarge
@emmanuelledebarge
Jun 01 2016 07:10
@ilginsu also you only need one style element
Siddharth Subhankar
@sidsub007
Jun 01 2016 07:10
@ilginsu p elements do not need numbers to define themselves. only heading elements need that
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:10
alright, thanks
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:10
since there's no such thing as a p1 tag in valid HTML, that code won't do anything
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:10
i invented a new one!

Jun 01 2016 07:11
sorry for the typo and confusion I caused. It was the p tag not p class.
Shreyas S
@Shreyas1994
Jun 01 2016 07:11
P element can inherit from class rite? @sidsub007
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:11
here is the new code
<style>
.red-text {
color:red;
}
p {
font-size: 16px;
}
</style>
but second p is not red
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:12
perfect
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:12
still
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:12
you need to give that p a class of red-text, just like you did with h2
Emmanuelle DeBarge
@emmanuelledebarge
Jun 01 2016 07:12
p class=red-text
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:12
ok
but
challange says
Emmanuelle DeBarge
@emmanuelledebarge
Jun 01 2016 07:12
@ilginsu should look like this <p class = "red-text> ENTER TEXT HERE </p>
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:12
Do not add a class attribute to the second p element.
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:13
add it to first right?
Ilgin Su Catalkaya
@ilginsu
Jun 01 2016 07:13
tes
yes
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 01 2016 07:13
that should be all if I remember correctly
h2 and first p element are red-text, 2nd p element is not
but, both p tags should have font of 16px
Emmanuelle DeBarge
@emmanuelledebarge
Jun 01 2016 07:13
@ilginsu so only make one of the p elements with class="red-text"
