Oneidaris
@Oneidaris
Jun 06 2016 00:05
@rphares Yes it said to create 2 div class elements
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 00:05
@Chipp99 , you need to give some details to your body element in the <style> section,
an example:
<style>
element {
    background-color: color;
    color: blue;
    font-family:Times New Roman;
  }

</style>
@Oneidaris , the instructions i see say : Now we'll create a Bootstrap row for our inline elements. Create a div element below the h3 tag, with a class of row. ?
in which case, you dont need those divs yet... are you on the next lesson, perhaps?

how do i give my body element a color property of green in that @rphares
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 00:08
so, the divs are both in that row, but actually, you need to close them IMMEDIATELY after you open them, not at the end, @Oneidaris . Otherwise, the second of those <div class="col-xs-6"> is IN the first one, since it isn't closed yet~
look at my example again, @Chipp99 . I set the color property of element to color. I will now edit it so the color property of element is blue.

@loweehahn ...As per my knowledge bootstrap is not able to do that...U can use jQuery for it...

$(".nav a").on("click", function(){
$(".nav").find(".active").removeClass("active");
$(this).parent().addClass("active");
});
//copy-pasted

and den add is to your css:

a:active{
background color:blue;
}

Use the Bootstrap Grid to Put Elements Side By Side
Bootstrap uses a responsive grid system, which makes it easy to put elements into rows and specify each element's relative width. Most of Bootstrap's classes can be applied to a div element.

Here's a diagram of how Bootstrap's 12-column grid layout works:

an image illustrating Bootstrap's grid system

Note that in this illustration, the col-md- class is being used. Here, md means medium, and is a number specifying how many columns wide the element should be. In this case, the column width of an element on a medium-sized screen, such as a laptop, is being specified.

In the Cat Photo App that we're building, we'll use col-xs-, where xs means extra small (like an extra-small mobile phone screen), and is the number of columns specifying how many columns wide the element should be.

Put the Like, Info and Delete buttons side-by-side by nesting all three of them within one <div class="row"> element, then each of them within a <div class="col-xs-4"> element.

The row class is applied to a div, and the buttons themselves can be nested within it.

<div class="row">
<button class="col-xs-4" class="btn btn-block btn- primary">Like</button>
<button class="col-xs-4" class="btn btn-block btn-info">Info</button>
<button class="col-xs-4" class="btn btn-block btn-danger">Delete></button>
</div>
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 00:27
ah-
you need to close each <div>
for the first one, for example,
This message was deleted
notice at the end i closed the div?
and
This message was deleted
This message was deleted
This message was deleted
you put the DIV class in the button,
but you need to be opening divs each button
example:
<div class= "col **><button class="something">Text</button></div>
(sorry, i misread the first time, didn't see the whole mistake :blush: )

its an icon
you cant put words in the icon
just dont know why we need a closing tag for them :blush: but we do, so.... buttons get the icon and the text inside, the icon gets NO text inside :blush:

@aaronlikescode ,the div with that class must go at the very top of the html,
right after the end of the </style> section,
and you need to close it at the very end
literally the last line of your code,
so if you open it at the start of your html, and close it at the end,

KHSoma
@KHSoma
Jun 06 2016 01:12
hey can someone explain this to me?

Create a Bootstrap Row
Now we'll create a Bootstrap row for our inline elements.

Create a div element below the h3 tag, with a class of row.

<div class="container-fluid">
<h3 class="text-primary text-center">jQuery Playground</h3>

</div>
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:12
so, you know what a div element is, and how to give it a class--
now, add one in the line that you have blank,
with the class row
KHSoma
@KHSoma
Jun 06 2016 01:13
As its own thing?
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:13
(and close it right after you open it)
KHSoma
@KHSoma
Jun 06 2016 01:13
oh so it just wants me to not add it to the other class?
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:13
yep, just open and close a div (with the class) on line three~
row is another bootstrap class--
you already have a big div
(container fluid)
and inside it you have a headline
KHSoma
@KHSoma
Jun 06 2016 01:14
I was just adding row in that same space
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:14
you are now making a smaller div, with the class row, in that space
KHSoma
@KHSoma
Jun 06 2016 01:14
Got it
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:14

KHSoma

this isn't super technical, but i think of divs kinda like sections in a newspaper. There might be a BIG section, that has two articles in it. the big section is like the big div, and each article is like a little div (in my head).
So i can visually image they are just rectangles that hold stuff :blush: Sometimes they go in one another, sometimes they sit side by side, sometimes they hold many things, sometimes just a little~

My question is about Codepen. In the CSS area, is that where I would normally put the <style></style> element?
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:19
exactly so, @Rouque ~
you dont need to type <style> in codepen
Rouque

it assumes it's in Style

Another tip for codepen-- there is a gear icon at the top,
James Quiambao
@Jam3sQ
Jun 06 2016 01:20
so im just wondering what the purpose of codepen is?
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:20
you can use that to link things like jQuery and bootstrap,
no need to include <link...
its an easy way to show off your work-- people can interact with what you've built @Jam3sQ
other methods are now accepted-- originally is was only codepen, but if you choose github or the like, thats fine
as long as FCC can review both the code AND interact with the project
though many people do use codepen specifically for this purpose outside of FCC as well :blush:
Rouque
@Rouque
Jun 06 2016 01:22
Ugh, I have just started on this and I am already like "So... I have learned nothing."
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:22
@Rouque -- nope, not at all,
the projects are a bit of a jump,
Rouque
@Rouque
Jun 06 2016 01:23
I'm resisting the temptation to just view page source on the example page so much.
Cause I know I know the stuff, but I just can't figure it out.
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:23
i suggest-- plan out what you want. break down the pieces that are small,
and google the checkout of how to make those
Rouque
@Rouque
Jun 06 2016 01:23
Well I just want the layout to function right right now.
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:23

Rouque
@Rouque
Jun 06 2016 01:24
I get that.
James Quiambao
@Jam3sQ
Jun 06 2016 01:24
@rphares I see, so what limitations does codepen have? it seems much more intuitive then using a text editor like notepad++ and sublime?
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:24
not everyone needs to know the same things. and NO one memories all the stuff~
@Jam3sQ , im not a pro, but-- from what I've heard, no,
its nice that you can immediately see what you are doing-- i believe at least sublime is the same--
Rouque
@Rouque
Jun 06 2016 01:25
I'm so used to Visual Studio, CodePen seems very cut down to me. But it's also nice to be able to just write without all the handholding.
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:25
but not better than, it isn't meant o be an editor so much as a place to show things off @Jam3sQ
James Quiambao
@Jam3sQ
Jun 06 2016 01:25
@Rouque I started the tribute page on friday and at first i thought the same thing, i didn't learn anything
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:25
many people code in their own preferred place, and then paste it into codepen @Jam3sQ
James Quiambao
@Jam3sQ
Jun 06 2016 01:25
but FCC does give you all the tools you really need
and once you get into the flow of things it gets pretty fun applying what you've learned!
rphares
@rphares
Jun 06 2016 01:27
i personally have avoided using mine (atom) too much, as the benefit (for me) of it is it forces me to figure out my own JS mistakes, heh, and thats my weakness... but to each their own~ @Jam3sQ
just know that you do need the project up somewhere, like codepen or github, with a live link that people can check :blush: beyond that, do what you prefer.

<style>
.example-class {
color: blue;

</style>

Then, you need to APPLY the class to your html, so it knows what elements you want to have those details:

<p>Some text</p>
<p class= "example-class">Some more text</p>

Now, my second p has the class example-class, so the text is blue :blush:

Brownie Points

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are two ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.

You should have a total of two images.
Your new image should be below your old one and have the class img-responsive.
Your new image should not have the class smaller-image.
Your new image should have a src of https://bit.ly/fcc-running-cats.
Make sure your new img element has a closing angle bracket.

on all of them seperately?
Rouque
@Rouque

Hey guys, Im doing the tribute page challenge and I wanted to know if is there a way to write better in CodePen, because I cant correct a mistake on the code (unless I copy the whole code to anything like the notepad and edit there) without deleting the words after the mistake because the website keeps replacing the old text with the new one

skilescm
@skilescm
Jun 06 2016 02:47
@thebrhoneybadger play around with the views on codepen. There is a code only view that makes editing a bit easier.
@RSantiago1186 it because everything is inside of your first div that has text-center applied.
Bernardo
@thebrhoneybadger
Jun 06 2016 02:50
@skilescm you mean change the layout?
skilescm
@skilescm
Jun 06 2016 02:50
@RSantiago1186 try closing the div that has text-center applied before starting the <ul> this will let you style the list seperately.
Ray Santiago
@RSantiago1186
Jun 06 2016 02:51
ooo removed text-center thanks... so if some of my time line dates have more than one thing happening that year, can I do <p> to divide them? or should I make it another <li>
skilescm
@skilescm
Jun 06 2016 02:52
@thebrhoneybadger usually what I do is run it in editor view and then drag the divider bar for the preview all the way down to full screen the code sections.
@RSantiago1186 , like a second event?
@RSantiago1186 , you could nest a <ul> inside of that <li> and it would indent and place the second item below.

what does rel=stylesheet actually do
Rouque
@Rouque
Jun 06 2016 03:08
I don't know for sure.
But if I had to guess it is probably a location it's importing to.
CSS is Cascading Style Sheets.
So it could even be a file type that the page needs to know.
Ray Santiago
@RSantiago1186
Jun 06 2016 03:09
but i mean it should be attached the the css already correct?
Rouque
@Rouque
Jun 06 2016 03:09
Not necessarily. I mean you're just linking to it
Unless you use it in a class you aren't actually calling on it.
Programming is hyper logical. You have to go through and make sure you are telling it exactly what you want it to do throughout the entire lifecycle.
skilescm
@skilescm
Jun 06 2016 03:10
@RSantiago1186 rel means relationship
Rouque
@Rouque
Jun 06 2016 03:12
For instance, in another tool I made something called an Event Listener, actually I built 2 of them. I put a function in the first one and figured because the other one was "listening" I wouldn't have to build a function for that one.
skilescm
@skilescm
Jun 06 2016 03:12
the link just tells it where to pull the stylesheet from, but the relationship tells it that it is a stylesheet you are linking to
@iskya , can you post a link to your pen?
Rouque
@Rouque
Jun 06 2016 03:13
I was wrong because the code was built to listen, but it had no other instructions. It was listening sure, but it wasn't told to do anything with what it was listening. I had essentially told it to watch something, but never tell me if that item changed.

First, i made the class in the <style> section
the <style> section holds the details of the style changes we want
then, i had to tell my html which parts i want to give those details

Hey on the "Nest an Anchor Element within a Paragraph" Challenge, it will not allow me to complete. The requirement that says "Your p element should have the text "View more " (with a space after it)." will not pass. Here is my code:

I'm not sure why it's not passing. It's either a bug or something small I missed.

you give an element more than one class by putting both (or more) classes in the same set of "", @dbetances3
for example, <element class= "class1 class2">
now, element has the class class1 and the class class2
you need to give your button btn and btn-block
so, they share the same set of class=""

Julian Müller It's still not letting me pass this level: <p>View More <a href="http://www.freecatphotoapp.com">cat photos</a>

this is what I put. This is what they say:
Your p element should have the text "View more " (with a space after it).

@Julian24816 ty I will figure this out. I did add the style in the style in the css section as you said and it worked so big thanks again. The only problem remaining is to not add a class attribute to the 2nd p element and when I use <div> for this it is fixed but then it tells me my p element should contain the first few words of the kitty text...

Hi all, does anyone mind looking at my css for my "portfolio" area of my profile? I've been trying to work out how to use absolute and relative positioning to put a div over the thumbnail image, and I'm 90% of the war there, I think. The problem is now just the width of the div. I've tried using % to set it to be 100% minus the total padding of the parent, but it only works at certain screen widths, and I'm not sure why o.0 It's specifically the .thumbnail and .caption classes. Thanks all!

needs to be animated bounce @Iczac
look at example given to you carefully:
Here's how you would give the third element in each well the bounce class:

$(".target:nth-child(3)").addClass("animated bounce");

@coymeetsworld Your left-well element should have a red background.
You should use the .parent() function to modify this element.
The .parent() method should be called on the #target1 element.
Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element.

im not sure why @danpu, i was able to do reset and it worked fine just modifying that one section, did you by any chance copy and paste something there again?
@Mustyashamma your code is giving the left-well's parent the red background color
but you want to give left-well the red background color, not its parent

@danpu They have tracks like Full stack javascript, Html, Css, php and many more. These tracks basically consist of videos where they explain the concepts. Then you have to apply the content in code challenges, quizzes or your own projects
