hello all
Hassan
@Quantic-Dreams
Jun 12 2016 00:02
Do you guys use any external text editors to look at your source code?
I like to have a look at the code I've compiled in one convenient place to see the moving pieces and how everything fits together. Wondering using outside IDEs is commonplace here

@overmelo I already use AppCode, which is slightly more sophisticated. But I am relatively new to the web development community, so I was just asking if it's a commonplace practice here or if everyone only uses the edit provided on the site

Jun 12 2016 00:12
It's unfortunate, but @overmelo is right that only about 20% of programmers are women @valerierose1. Not that they can't, but society has discouraged them from it.

@ThomasBurgess15 there's a difference between whether women like programming and how many women are represented in the programming industry
valerierose1
@valerierose1
Jun 12 2016 00:13
That's so sad that other females would rather play house and with dolls then do something hahaha @ThomasBurgess15
than**
Thomas Burgess

@hnry I'm assuming those that like programming are in the industry, but you're right, there is a difference.

Jun 12 2016 00:14
So does this make me another one of the guys? hahaha
Thomas Burgess
@ThomasBurgess2000
Jun 12 2016 00:15
No, but industry demographics do give you a good insight into the general trend. And I would say that eskimos probably wouldn't be interested in programming either. @hnry
Hassan
@Quantic-Dreams
Jun 12 2016 00:15

@hnry
Jun 12 2016 00:16
@ThomasBurgess15 that's like saying poor kids are dumber because statistically they have worse grades.... but the truth is they lack opportunities and the tools to stay ahead with the more fortunate
there's always a reason behind stats
don't just take them at face value
Thomas Burgess
@ThomasBurgess2000
Jun 12 2016 00:16
That's not what I'm saying at all. But women are not "lacking opportunities" in the same way that poor kids are.
Last time I checked, they also have computers. @hnry
Stephane
@overmelo
Jun 12 2016 00:17
@valerierose1 rare are women like you. but in a computer science class there is like 10 or 5% of women. others are in sociology
hnry
@hnry
Jun 12 2016 00:17
@ThomasBurgess15 and how many women would feel comfortable being in a comp sci class with 99% males?

Thomas Burgess
@ThomasBurgess2000
Jun 12 2016 00:17
So you're saying there are less women in coding because there are a lot of men in computer classes? that seems self-perpetuating. @hnry

Woman are very strong creatures but we are scared of a lot. Lots of woman are intimidated by men and the industries with men. And it is because society has made us look weak. Like we cannot handle a CEO job or a simple computer program,. If more woman stood up and we had more woman do shit then maybe the world wouldnt be so corrupted with that mindset. Men are surpieror to woman.

Jun 12 2016 00:24
@hnry how come
Hassan
@Quantic-Dreams
Jun 12 2016 00:24
@DabLife Alright so the problem here is that you have your title inside your style element
Stephane
@overmelo
Jun 12 2016 00:24
@DabLife incomplete code
Hassan
@Quantic-Dreams
Jun 12 2016 00:24
the style element is where you store permanent variables
Stephane
@overmelo
Jun 12 2016 00:24
or wrong assignment
Hassan
@Quantic-Dreams
Jun 12 2016 00:24
So inside your <style> </style> code, the only thing that should be there is your h2 code
for color
Your CatPhoto app needs a standalone <h2> OUTSIDE the </style>
Does that make sense @DabLife

Jun 12 2016 00:30
@SuperCharged818 delete h2 before h2.red
James
@SuperCharged818
Jun 12 2016 00:30
@SaloneKay itscalled " use a css class to style an element "
@overmelo no h2?
Stephane
@overmelo
Jun 12 2016 00:31
@SuperCharged818 u have to represent the class which is red-text not the tags which is <h2>
Hassan
@Quantic-Dreams
Jun 12 2016 00:32
Alright so your problem is you need add .red-text{ color: red} because that will make the entirety of your <p> tags red
So it should look like this @SuperCharged818 <style>
h2 {
color: red;
}
.red-text {
color: red;
}
Stephane
@overmelo
Jun 12 2016 00:32
in your <style>
@SaloneKay @SuperCharged818 no need of h2{ color:red;}
James
@SuperCharged818
Jun 12 2016 00:35
hmmm
Hassan
@Quantic-Dreams
Jun 12 2016 00:36
James, do you understand why you need an additional element in your <style> ? One is for the color of the header and the other for the remainder of the text.
James

Hey guys, just had a quick question, is it possible to create a single-page, scrolling site that will have each “page” automatically resize to fit the browser window/screen-size?
I’m having a hell of a time trying to make each of the pages resize and scroll correctly
iccomq
@iccomq
Jun 12 2016 01:12
@tlheille yes, in multiple ways
everything depands on what you already have
wait a second

I’ve been tinkering with trying to set the body height/width at 100% and having each page inherit that size
But when I go to add a background image for the page, it won’t fill the entire background
Dylan
@dhcodes
Jun 12 2016 01:19
@iccomq well others can click the full link to be taken there
and width to 100vw
@tlheille i think it works if you change height to 100vh

this is interesting though
why that happens

A CSS rule goes like this.
selector{
property:value

For eg: If you have a class smaller-image, you can set its width to 100px using
.smaller-image{

}

@verdelegend it is the opposite of a div. A div is a block level element and a span is an inline element.
an image is another example of an inline image, but a heading is an example of a block level element.

Sure! when we use classes, we need to do two things. First , create the class int the <style> section, which you have done. Second, apply the class in the html by adding class= "className" in the elements tag-- ill make an example called example-class:blush:

@BoonjoKoonjo , you give an element an ID in a very similar way to giving it a class,
first, you create the ID in the <style> section
<style>
#id-name {
background-color: purple;//this is an example!
}
</style>
then, you add id= "id-name" in the elements tag
(like how you add class= "class-name")

i tried to copy and paste the directions :Comment out HTML
Remember that in order to start a comment, you need to use <!-- and to end a comment, you need to use -->

Here you'll need to end the comment before your h2 element begins.

Comment out your h1 element and your p element, but leave your h2 element uncommented.

Run tests (ctrl + enter)
Reset Help Bug
Comment out your h1 element so that it is not visible on your page.
Leave your h2 element uncommented so that it is visible on your page.
Comment out your p element so that it is not visible on your page.
Be sure to close each of your comments with -->.
Do not change the order of the h1 h2 or p in the code.

"Instead of using six hexadecimal digits like you do with hex code, with RGB you specify the brightness of each color with a number between 0 and 255.

If you do the math, the two digits for one color equal 16 times 16, which gives us 256 total values. So RGB, which starts counting from zero, has the exact same number of possible values as hex code."

Change the Font Size of an Element -- confusion abounds. You need to clarify that all elements within a <style></style> are treated differently. The CSS class you create and reference in HTML gets a .(period), while a reference to the HTML element <p> gets no period, just the p. You stated the first, but not the latter.

<p>additional Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

I'm doing my challenge, and
-You need 2 p elements with Kitty Ipsum text.
-Make sure each of your p elements has a closing tag.
-Your p element should contain the first few words of the provided additional kitty ipsum text.
-Do not add a class attribute to the second p element.
-Between the style tags, give the p elements font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.
-Your p element should contain the first few words of the provided additional kitty ipsum text. <--- this one, is X. I don't understand, what is wrong.

Hey guys, I'm here to share with you my Tribute Page. I'm really proud of me right now, because it took me a lot of time to search, code and to translate (because I wanted my dad to read the page (since he’s a boxing fan), so I translated everything to Portuguese), and I really liked learn some new things about Ali's life as well. I hope you guys like it. So here it is: https://codepen.io/thehoneybadger/pen/mEJYbG/ (English version) and https://codepen.io/thehoneybadger/pen/RRawgm/ (Portuguese Version) *You can actually navigate through these two pages by clicking on the flags of the respective countries at the upper-left corner, this changes the page’s language from English to Portuguese and vice-versa.

QUICK QUESTION: Can you tell me how to run this while loop untill arr[0] is true instead of me using break too early as I am doing.. Basically I dont know hwo to avoid an infinite loop here without an early break...

function dropElements(arr, func) {
// Drop them elements.
for(i=0;i<arr.length;i++){ while(arr.filter(func,arr[0]===false)){
arr.shift();
break;}
}

return arr;
}

dropElements([1, 2, 3, 9, 2], function(n) {return n >2; });

    if (func(a[i])) {
      newA = a.slice(i);

@123xylem , if the function returns true, you break, and you also make a copy of the array from when the array's element return true to the end like the challenge wants

hey guys I'm having issues trying to get columns with Bootstrap for my tribute page project.

<div class="row" style="background-color: #dbdbdb; margin-top: 25px" id="body">
<div class="col-md-6" id="left-side" style="margin-top: 15px">
<div class="well">
</div>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6" id="right-side">
<div class="well">
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>

I have this as my code, and I doubled check to see if it matched the code from the one we learned. But instead of getting two columns, i get two rows

Good evening, Campers. I have a CSS transition effect reduces text size on a hover event. I would like to have this effect occur after page loads -- rather than on a hover event. Ideally, display the black font for a second or two on page load -- then do the transition to smaller font.

Is this possible only in CSS without resorting to js or jq?

Thanks in advance. :) Here's my codepen so far... https://codepen.io/andreas2249/full/yJOLya/

Brownie Points

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are two ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.

Hello, in the challenge, convert a word to piglatin, I think my code should work fine, but it isn't working. First for loop works good, but the second one is iterating only once, idk why. So if irun the function on 'glove', it returns loveg instead of ovegl. can someone help?

function translatePigLatin(str) {
var vowels = ['a','e','i','o','u'];

  for(var i = 0; i<vowels.length; i++){
   if(str.charAt(0)===vowels[i]){
     return str+"way";
    }
 }
  str= str.slice(1)+str.charAt(0);
  for(var j = 0; j<vowels.length; j++){
   if(str.charAt(0)!=vowels[j])
      str=str.slice(1)+str.charAt(0);
  }
    return str+'ay';
}
translatePigLatin("glove");

@IshtmeetSingh , I think the problem is that strings are immutable (Not self changing-updating) , but you are mutating over str in second loop. The best alternative would be splitting the given string in an array , and then mutating over that. And on returning joining it...

@KyleV24 comments are texts that explains something to you or other programmers, or fragments of code you want to save it for later
@KyleV24 you put two tags: <!-- on the beginning and --> at the end of the comment.
When you want to uncomment it, just remove them:
<!-- <h2>This is commented</h2>   -->

In the "change-the-font-size-of-an-element" challenge I've noticed that you have to add semicolons after the closing braces in the style element for display on the right to show the effects of multiple attributes, but they only accept answers without a said semicolons. Here's my code:

<!--
--// format that the updates display to the right
<style>
  .red-text {
    color: red;
  };
  p {
    font-size: 16px;
  };
</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>
<p>Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p>
-->

<!-- accepted answer -->
<style>
  .red-text {
    color: red;
  }
  p {
    font-size: 16px;
  }
</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>
<p>Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p>

Hi guys, I am trying to solve the permutation bonfire "No repeats please". Correct me if I am wrong but it seems like I got it right. I mean my function output the expected answers, yet I can't pass the test. Strange isn't it.
See for yourself :

var permutations = [];

function rmFromArr(arr, ind) {
  var newArr = [];

  for (var i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {
    if (i !== ind) {
      newArr.push(arr[i]);
    }
  }
  return newArr;
}

function perm(base, letters) {
  if (letters.length === 0) {
    permutations.push(base);
    return;
  }
  var len = letters.length;
  for (var i = 0; i < len; i++) {
    perm(base + letters[i], rmFromArr(letters, i));
  }
}

function permAlone(str) {
  var letters = str.split("");
  perm("", letters);
  var count = 0;
  for (var i = 0; i < permutations.length; i++) {
    if (!/(\w)\1+/.test(permutations[i])) {
      count++;
    }
  }
  return count;
}

permAlone("aaab");

I would really appreciate any help you can give.
