This seems so simple and straight forward but for whatever reason I can not get it to work
Sometimes you want to add a elements to your website before you know where they will link.

This is also handy when you're changing the behavior of a link using jQuery, which we'll learn about later.

Replace the value of your a element's href attribute with a #, also known as a hash symbol, to turn it into a dead link.

Jun 13 2016 00:25
@Staxed so first solution would begiving the footer white background, it gives bad taste though as image slided beneath
and no there wont be any solution but one, giving a document min-heigh preventing image from ever overlapping footer
its just that fixed guy and absolute guy there, both ignore "unit-collision"

iccomq
@iccomq
Jun 13 2016 00:29
@Staxed what if, you dont position the photo absolutely.. then you can push the box behind (of the height of the footer) aaand everything will be perfect
Daniel

Jun 13 2016 00:30
@iccomq if I remove the absolute value the image isn't centered anymore

Jun 13 2016 00:32
What's the point of setting an ID for everything when we can just use the class attribute?
iccomq
@iccomq
Jun 13 2016 00:33
@Staxed fork the codepen so its safe and try to do science with that
img {
    width: 80%;
    margin-left: 10%;
    position: relative;
}
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 13 2016 00:33
id is for one specific element @nerrrdd, class can be applied multiple times
iccomq
@iccomq
Jun 13 2016 00:34
@Staxed if you could make that work, a little more will solve a lot problems
if not then youre back in old fixed vs absolute
Priscilla
@nerrrdd
Jun 13 2016 00:35
What do you mean one specific element? @coymeetsworld
Daniel
@Staxed
Jun 13 2016 00:35
@iccomq problem is the image doesn't have a set spot, so fixed or relative won't work, guess I can play around with trying to get flexboxes to work and maybe go that route
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 13 2016 00:35
tags @nerrrdd, like a div or a p
iccomq
@iccomq
Jun 13 2016 00:36
   width: 80%;
margin-left: 10%;
would center it, i did it there and it does the trick
just delete img:empty stuff
im too lazy to experiment much more in there though
@Staxed best way imo would be just setting min-height to body and call it a day
Priscilla
@nerrrdd
Jun 13 2016 00:38
So how does that explain this @coymeetsworld html <div class="well" id="left-well"> <button class="btn btn-default target" id="target1"></button> <button class="btn btn-default target" id="target2"></button> <button class="btn btn-default target" id="target3"></button> </div>

        <button class="btn btn-default target" id="target2"></button>

Okay. So to conclude and se if I understand, the class attribute is used to give multiple elements while the id attribute only gives one. So when you want to name an attribute something specific, and id is best rather than using just class? And it's best just using a specific name for one specific thing in your html using id?

Ah-- it wands you to nest cat photos between the <a> tags, @bese314
here is an example, i will nest the words Im nested
oh, wait-- thats different than the first time,
you are close, but you have removed the h2 text,
<a href="http://freecatphotoapp.com">IM NESTED</a>
in the example above, the words IM NESTED are inbetween the <a> tags, @bese314
you need to do the same for the words cat photos

you create the class in the style section, @JohnWright24 . i will make a cals called example-class
<style>
body {
background-color: black;
font-family: Monospace;
color: green;
}

.example-class {
color: purple;
}
</style>
then, you need to apply the class to the element,

you can use deadlinks on buttons (i.e. #something)
and if you click on the link it will check locally for an element with the id something
no, i tags and button tags are separate @JynxxTV with their respective classes
you need to nest the i tags inside button

When creating the class to size my image, do I have create a new style or sheet?
VultureBetrayer
@VultureBetrayer
Jun 13 2016 03:09
if you are creating a class you need to embed that in a <style>
you can also do a one off but if you want to reference it as a div then yes
you can do a style in the page or you can embed in a css that parts up to you

need help with lesson 42. could someone beof assistance?

You can set an element's background color with the background-color property.

For example, if you wanted an element's background color to be green, you'd put this within your style element:

.green-background {
background-color: green;
}
Create a class called gray-background with the background-color of gray. Assign this class to your div element

<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
}

p {
font-size: 16px;
font-family: Monospace;
}

.thick-green-border {
border-color: green;
border-width: 10px;
border-style: solid;
border-radius: 50%;
}

.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
</style>

Jun 13 2016 04:52
your syntax on your style is a little messed up
there should be 2 selectors, one for body, and one for .pink-text
each should have its own set of brackets opening and closing
body {

}

.pink-text {

}

is it just me, or is CodePen generally unpredictable?
I'm copying and pasting snippets of code, but the way they behave on these example pages doesn't match how they behave on CodePen
specifically, collapsible navbars

iccomq
@iccomq
Jun 13 2016 08:56
thats becouse its surrounded by <!-- and -->, this is how you leave comments in html, comments are not interpreted by your browser so you can leave information directly in your document
so all you have to do is delete <!-- and --> @eldschmichael

@mforno1 try to reset your code and touch just what you are supposed to do, if still not working, well look into that
keep in mind that when somethings fishy and all is how it should be, you probably touched something you shouldnt :)
those mistakes are hard to spot so resetting code comes in handy

Hi, wanna ask if ScrollSpy works in CodePen..? Cos I can't get it to work :/
iccomq
@iccomq
Jun 13 2016 09:11
@yashk7oooo put just a link somewhere in there
strip it from all other things
<a href="http://freecatphotoapp.com">"cat photos"</a>
should do it
ive never used it @ethanchoi812 but it should be pretty easy to do the 'dirty way'
$(window).scrollTop() will return number of pixels scrolled from the top
so with a few brakpoints you could just addclasses or what not
to your nav
yashk7oooo
@yashk7oooo
Jun 13 2016 09:16
not working bro@iccomq
should I give you the full code?
iccomq
@iccomq
Jun 13 2016 09:17

@yashk7oooo it is working, reset your code and paste that:

<a href="http://freecatphotoapp.com">"cat photos"</a>

between h2 and img elements in empty line

theres no need to paste 50 lines of useless html in the chat, thats literally the solution

// Change the inputs below to test your code
convertToF(30);

@roopak2053 You need to update the value of variable farenheit such that is equal to the value of celsius given to your function.
Here is the formula : fahrenheit=(celsius*9/5)+32;

:point_right: adding snippets to sublime text [wiki]

Adding Snippets To Your Sublime Text Installation

If you are a user of sublime text (I hope you are, it kicks ass. You can get it here), then you may have already noticed some of the tab completion capabilities. For example, when you are opening an html tag such as <p>, it automatically closes the tag as soon as you type /. You can get similar functionality for pieces of code you end up re-writing over and over, and it's surprisingly easy!

Here's an example, which activates after typing div and then tab:

alt text
