Why does the text content "margin" within the yellow-box. Seems it should appear above it (outside the yellow-box).
How can this positioning be better understood?

just array.length will give you the length of the array, the [0] is like you are calling the first element of the array and trying to get it's length... wich am not sure if it is a string it could work.. but not to get the array's length @EntopricInformation
Jason Paulino
@EntopricInformation

Right @MariaTaborda I am trying to compare the length of the two words before running my if statement
Tony Johnson
@tnyjhnsn
Jun 24 2016 01:00
@EntopricInformation it’s also a little bit confusing because where you have var string = str.split(' ‘); is actually an array
Maria Alejandra
@MariaTaborda
Jun 24 2016 01:02

@zaynsantiago the challenge is asking you to create two more divs, not to assign the same class, you actually need to add two divs after the for <div class=row>

<div class= col-xs-6> </div> (two times)
</div>

@EntopricInformation ok so I am not advanced enough to explain why your code doesn't work (hahah big help right?) but what I did was split the string (as you have it) then find string[i].length for each of the entries, and finally sort the lengths array... the good thing about coding is that it can have several answers so... if you want to stick with yours I'm sure you can make it work!
@Manish-Giri but that is because the array contains numbers... if the array contained strings you could do it

Hi All, I'm having issues with the above code. Probably a simple explanation, but I'm stuck. I've broken my code up into three parts. Part 1 and 2 are identical, except that Part 2 is inside of a JQuery click function. When both are in the code, Part 3 does not produce what I would like, i.e. a lot of ".innerHTML". When Part 2 is removed and Part 1 remains, it also doesn't work. However, when Part 1 is removed and Part 2 remains, Part 3 works. Can someone explain why? Shouldn't Part 1 act as global variables? Any feedback would be awesome!

@Manish-Giri why is it that i have to put it an id?
why can't i just reference the class container?
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 24 2016 01:57
@max77p actually, you dont need the ID at all, even this will work
 <div class="container  container-fluid">
    Hi
  </div>

.container{
  height:50%;
  width:50%;
  background-color:green;
}

@max77p

@Manish-Giri right so i had exact same code earlier but without the "hi"
why is it that container changes color when i put the Hi in but not if there is nothing between the div?
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 24 2016 01:58
@max77p yes, reason you werent seeing the color is because your div had no content, so it was literally not there on the page

ok
so I am back and I redid my code
var array = ["a"];

function findLongestWord(str) {
  var string = str.split(' ');
  for (i = 0;i < string.length; i++) {
        if (string[i].length > array[0].length) {
            array.splice(0,1);
            array.push(string[i]);
        } else {
            console.log(array[0]);
        }
    }
    console.log(array[0].length);
}

findLongestWord("The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog");
This works in a workspace that I have to test code
but, it doesn' work in the freecodecamp interface?
part of the errors I was getting before were from adding +1 to string.length in the for condition

let me rephrase to be more clear
why does the following code not work unless i add a space before bet and hold inside the double quotes?

var count = 0;

function cc(card) {
// Only change code below this line
switch(card){
case 2:
case 3:
case 4:
case 5:
case 6:
count+=1;
break;

case 7:
case 8:
case 9:

break;

case 10:
case 'J':
case 'Q':
case 'K':
case 'A':
  count-=1;
break;

}

if (count > 0){
return count + " Bet";
}
else {
return count + " Hold";
}

return "Change Me";
// Only change code above this line
}
this is for the counting cards challenge

Hey all, I am looking at the following exercise: goo.gl/qZ0Pmy
However, I am not sure what the instructions mean?
here's my code:

<script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass("animated shake");
$(".btn").addClass("animated shake");
$("#target1").addClass("btn-primary")
});
</script>

<div class="container-fluid">
<h3 class="text-primary text-center">jQuery Playground</h3>
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-6">
<h4>#left-well</h4>
<div class="well" id="left-well">
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target1">#target1</button>
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target2">#target2</button>
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target3">#target3</button>
</div>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-6">
<h4>#right-well</h4>
<div class="well" id="right-well">
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target4">#target4</button>
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target5">#target5</button>
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target6">#target6</button>
</div>
</div>
</div>

However, something seems off..I am not sure what does the following instruction mean: 'Only add one class with each of your three selectors.'

Jun 24 2016 03:10
you could edit the image and force it to be sqaure by changing it in a photo editor then upload it to an image hosting site and use the square image or perhaps add a suare radius to the image that chops off the distance beyond a certain point, but I think that would make the image look misaligned
if that is your problem in the first place. I can't really tell if the image is square or not
and you are using two separate images for the header and background so you have to make sure they have the same pixel width

There was a lesson I forgot which where you can add a border to an image to limit it's size. It was one of the ones with the cat in a green circle. You could probably use that information to crop the image to a size that would fit in your area

@GenEst you need to make a CSS class first
between your style
add
.gray-background {
background-color: gray;
}

strugging on this "Record Collection" challenge
any help would be appreciated

"Write a function which takes an id, a property (prop), and a value.

For the given id in collection:

If prop does not contain the key "tracks", then update or set the value for that incomplete prop.

If prop does not contain the key "tracks" before you update it, create an empty array before pushing a track to it.

If prop does contain the key "tracks" and its value is non-blank, then push the value onto the end of its existing tracks array.

If value is blank, delete that prop.

Always return the entire collection object."

I have a question regarding React as my main framework
The thing is I have finally managed to use React with Webpack and running it in express, but I have a new problem I can't seems to understand. If you are (e.g) using passport for authentication. Usually you would redirect template but how can you do such thing when there are no views in the server side while using react?

@AhmedShab redirects usually don't have a response body (anything to see) , and technically react is your view, as you render a 'view' with it and send that back
silver537
@silver537

Hey guys, hope all is well :smile:
I have a question regarding React as my main framework
The thing is I have finally managed to use React with Webpack and running it in express, but I have a new problem I can't seems to understand. If you are (e.g) using passport for authentication. Usually you would redirect template but how can you do such thing when there are no views in the server side while using react?

All I need to understand(was tryiong to say) is how would you render a dom complement in the server side while you have a SPA. Like Okay, how can you prevent a user from going to protected router using SPA and how can you display a flash message if they are not have successful signed in?

I know how to do all of that with View engine but trying to learn ReactJs

Jhen Caneta

Jun 24 2016 06:35
Target Elements by Class Using jQuery

You see how we made all of your button elements bounce? We selected them with $("button"), then we added some CSS classes to them with .addClass("animated bounce");.

You just used jQuery's .addClass() function, which allows you to add classes to elements.

First, let's target your div elements with the class well by using the $(".well") selector.

Note that, just like with CSS declarations, you type a . before the class's name.

Then use jQuery's .addClass() function to add the classes animated and shake.

For example, you could make all the elements with the class text-primary shake by adding the following to your document ready function:

I have a question. When you're doing a CSS width property using <style>
.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
</style>, is there anything else you have to do to alter the photo?

@hnry
Jun 24 2016 08:06
@cmaverick92 you need to apply the class to the element so <img class="smaller-image" ..... >
the .... is whatever the rest of the values are like the src=""

Brownie Points

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are two ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.
