hey guys, i posted this earlier but still trying to figure this out. on my website, clicking the "about" and "portfolio" sections of my navbar end up scrolling down past the actual point they are supposed to. it was working in the earlier version of my portfolio, but im not sure when it stopped (i wasn't really testing it out along the way since it was already working). someone suggested padding but i can't figure out exactly what. anyone have ideas what could be causing this?

Hey everyone, have some questions about getJSON and for loops when working on my twitch API project
I have an array with all of the streamers listed
and want to loop through each name
then jump into the getJSON for that name
if the person is online, display it
if they’re offline, show them as offline
but my loop is somehow skipping like everything and showing the last name in the array
for offline users
codepen here
`
Does this have something to do with using getJSON within a for loop?
hnry
@hnry
Jun 28 2016 00:15
@Burgustu streamerLookup don't reuse that
Ed Sztukowski
@Burgustu
Jun 28 2016 00:15
youll see everyone offline is showing up as noobs2ninjas, which is the final name in the array
hm okay
so I can’t access the array like that from within the getJSON?
I tried accessing the array with twitchStreamers[i] and got an undefined
so im guessing it’s scope related
hnry
@hnry
Jun 28 2016 00:19
it's time related since getJSON is async

@Blackrider253 Inside the <style> tags you don't need to use <> brackets. SO you would do

h2 {
   font-family: Lobster;
}

That may just be a typo on your part though

@Prasannakshi To get started, we should nest all of our HTML in a div element with the class container-fluid.
Do you understand what it's asking you to do or are you having trouble with specifics?
Prasannakshi
@Prasannakshi
Jun 28 2016 01:18
we have to create .container-fluid element with in style class

Prasannakshi
@Prasannakshi

Gary Siu
@GarySiu
Jun 28 2016 01:19

(not the style tag)
Prasannakshi
@Prasannakshi
Jun 28 2016 01:19
no
Gary Siu
@GarySiu
Jun 28 2016 01:20
Ok well that's what they mean by nest. They mean wrap or put the tag around the outside.
<div>
  ...other stuff...
</div>
And then the last part is adding the container-fluid class to the div, like the last exercise with the image

@Prasannakshi the container-fluid class just needs to be in the style tags. It doesn't need to wrap all the other styles.
@Prasannakshi Also although it still works, you should probably put "" around the class attribute values
Keep trying stuff though. It's how we learn.

so if that is the case you make a class in the style tag by putting .classname which can be whatever you want to name it or whatever the instructions say to name it. dont forget the period before the name. and then it with in the {} curly brackets, you would put the background-color: grey part. @briansmash

@thegreatsevrini I got it to work just as you sent that. I did what you siggested inside the stylre tags, and then added to the opening div so it read <div class=background-color>
@thegreatsevrini That seemed to do the trick. Though I feel like it may have been a back asswards way to do it.

Each of your Bootstrap buttons should be nested within its own div element with the class col-xs-4.
<div class= "row">
<button class="col-xs-4">Like</button>
<button class="col-xs-4">Info</button>

@m4gnusholm A jumbotron has padding by default, so you need to remove them.
    .jumbotron {

       padding-right: 0 !important;
     }

Will
@Will-is-Coding
Jun 28 2016 04:04
@m4gnusholm That's not your jumbotron then. Your container-fluid is what is causing the jumbotron to be smaller. It also by default has padding. So set .container-fluid { padding-left: 0 !important; padding-right: 0 !important; }
@purnendutiwari That is incorrect, if you want something max width, use 12

Jun 28 2016 04:08
Although, I was just following the format of the demo-tribute-page, and FreeCodeCamp uses the container > jumbotron > row > col-xs-12
Are you saying that it isn't necessary to use it since we are already intending on using all 12 columns? (max-width)
Will
@Will-is-Coding
Jun 28 2016 04:09
@purnendutiwari Yes, but the proper way to have a full width column is to set it to 12. You would not do
<div class="row">
   <h1> This is full width </h1>
</div>
You would want
<div class="row">
   <div class="col-lg-12 col-md-12 col-sm-12 col-xs-12">
       <h1> This is a full width column within the row </h1>
    </div>
</div>

Especially if you want responsive widths when resizing the window or on a phone.

div class="row">
   <div class="col-lg-6 col-md-6 col-sm-6 col-xs-12">
       <h1> This is a full width column within the row </h1>
    </div>
</div>

SO that when it is on an extra small device it would be full width. If you left it blank without col-xs-12 it would break.

But if you wanted just one size, you could leave without, yes. @purnendutiwari
@discountry Right, I'm saying if it doesn't match a vowel then it is a consonant and move it.
@purnendutiwari So yes, only in the last scenario it is necessary. The second and first are essentially the same as you said, minus the padding a column will give you on the left and right sides. But I do generally think of it as a good habit than anything else, but you are right it wouldn't be necessary for full width.

@sdsmtstudent when you refer to classes you need to remove the dot
only use the dot to define a class inside the style tags, not to refer to them. Look at red-text for an example

I'm running into a problem with FCC ignoring multiple classes within an element.

 <h2 class="text-center" "red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

Gives me centered black text.

 <h2 class="red-text" "text-center">CatPhotoApp</h2>

Gives me left-aligned red text.

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 28 2016 05:16
you have too many slashes in your work @Spawn12
The work is much simpler
You have the string Here is a backslash: backslash.newline tab tab Here is a new line with two tabs. You just need to replace the 2nd backslash word, newline, tab, and tab with their respective escape sequences
for example instead of writing tab you would write \t since that is the escape sequence for tab
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 28 2016 05:18
@Brett588 do you have the text-center and red-text in your style element????
Brett588
@Brett588
Jun 28 2016 05:19
@Boris1011 I have red-text as a style element but the lesson says I don't need text-center with bootstrap. I can either align center or have red text, they just don't work together. Whichever class is listed 2nd is ignored.

@AhmedFaarah So when you nest something it is putting it inside another set of tags. Like layers.

<div class="Parent">
    <div class="Child">
        Stuff
     </div>
</div>

So the div classed 'child' is nested in the div classed 'parent'

There's some examples and tutorials on how to use it here tutorials/docs I used http://kenwheeler.github.io/slick/ http://www.journotech.co.uk/slick-carousel-in-codepen/
but it still doesn't work
do you know what the problem is?
Will

Also do you want arrows? Do you want dots? etc. How many to show?

I just want to see something more than 'your content'
if I could have that I would be so happy
Will
@Will-is-Coding
Jun 28 2016 06:05
Well okay, first use different phrases instead of the three your content divs.
Then start off with the basics, delete both $('.slick-work').slick({...});'s And simply start with $('.slick-work').slick();
I'd also set the parent div of slick-work with col-lg-2 col-md-3 col-sm-4 col-xs-6 so that the arrows aren't on opposite sides of the screen. ( Just a temporary thing )

To get started, we should nest all of our HTML in a div element with the class container-fluid.
Your div element should have the class container-fluid.
Make sure each of your div elements has a closing tag.
Make sure you have nested all HTML elements in .container-fluid.
Here's my code:
<div>
class: "container-fluid";
<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
}

p {
font-size: 16px;
font-family: Monospace;
}

.thick-green-border {
border-color: green;
border-width: 10px;
border-style: solid;
border-radius: 50%;
}

.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
</style>

@amps55 Its say nest HTML elements under div, not CSS. Plus you have not defined class container-fluid in your CSS
Fazila Kizakkaypattuthodi
@siyafazila
Jun 28 2016 06:36
@amps55 you put the div opening tag above the styles rather than the html. that's why it wasn't working
Farrukh
@Farrukhw
Jun 28 2016 06:37

Probably, it should be like this:

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
}

p {
font-size: 16px;
font-family: Monospace;
}

.thick-green-border {
border-color: green;
border-width: 10px;
border-style: solid;
border-radius: 50%;
}

.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
</style>

<div class="container-fluid";>
<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>Click here for <a href="#">cat photos</a>.</p>

<a href="#"><img class="smaller-image thick-green-border" src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat"></a>

<p>Things cats love:</p>
<ul>
<li>cat nip</li>
<li>laser pointers</li>
<li>lasagna</li>
</ul>
<p>Top 3 things cats hate:</p>
<ol>
<li>flea treatment</li>
<li>thunder</li>
<li>other cats</li>
</ol>
<form action="/submit-cat-photo">
<label><input type="radio" name="indoor-outdoor"> Indoor</label>
<label><input type="radio" name="indoor-outdoor"> Outdoor</label>
<label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Loving</label>
<label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Lazy</label>
<label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Crazy</label>
<input type="text" placeholder="cat photo URL" required>
<button type="submit">Submit</button>
</form>
</div>

@amps55 But still you need to define class="container-fluid" in your CSS

@llama-0 You need to close the <script> tag. $(document).ready(function() {} ) must be BETWEEN or nested in <script></script> tags. Not inside the tag itself
