what is a form element?
Alexios Pantavos
@AlexiosP
Aug 06 2016 00:04
@performingmonkey23 You could do this:
<div style="background-color: orange;">some text here</div>
or if you want, you can apply/assign a class to that specific div and style it through CSS

@morbidzero The HTML <form> element represents a document section that contains interactive controls to submit information to a web server (https://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web/HTML/Element/form).
@performingmonkey23 <div class="myCustomClass> text </div> and in your CSS or html:

@morbidzero
form element

The HTML <form> element represents a document section that contains interactive controls to submit information to a web server.
action (form attribute)
The URI of a program that processes the form information. This value can be overridden by a formaction attribute on a <button> or <input> element.

I have a question regarding a code pls
Olga C
@Octopinky
Aug 06 2016 00:41
@morbidzero Well, what stops you from creating an element inside <form>. It is like this <element>Contennts of element</element>
@mremotoo what is your question?
Phil
@mremotoo
Aug 06 2016 00:42
this code;
function findLongestWord(str) {
  var a = str.split(' ');
  var b = 0;

  for (var i = 0; i < a.length; i++) {
    if (a[i].length > b) {
      b = a[i].length;
    }
  }

  return b;
}

findLongestWord("The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog");
@Octopinky how did we get the longest word when all of the words are indeed greater than zero?
Olga C
@Octopinky
Aug 06 2016 00:44
@mremotoo I am not sure I understand the question. All of the words will always have at least 1 letter
Norvin Burrus
@ndburrus
Aug 06 2016 00:44
@Scarthevillain why do you want to remove an inline style? this lesson is asking for a color assignment using a css selector. we need to follow the sample code format, here:
<style>
  h2 {color: red;}
</style>
Phil
@mremotoo
Aug 06 2016 00:45

@Octopinky this line;

if (a[i].length > b) {
      b = a[i].length;

how did we get the longest word there when all of the words are greater than zero?

Olga C
@Octopinky
Aug 06 2016 00:46
@mremotoo after the first loop, the b variable will be reset to a new value
Excarlyn Vargas
@Scarthevillain
Aug 06 2016 00:46
I have that written down but they also want me to remove the style attribute for my <h2> element and want me to ensure that my <h2> declaration is valid with a semicolon @ndburrus

Aug 06 2016 00:47
how do i make my h2 element red
whats the code
Phil
@mremotoo
Aug 06 2016 00:48
@Octopinky because I understood it this way, if the words length is greater than zero, then the value of b will be equal to the words' length
Norvin Burrus
@ndburrus
Aug 06 2016 00:48
@phansheehan which lesson? is it asking for an inline style, or using a css style element?

<h1 class="green-text"> Hello World</h1>

Create an h1 element.
Your h1 element should have the text Hello World.
Make sure your h1 element has a closing tag.
Give your body element the color property of green.
Give your body element the font-family property of Monospace.
Your h1 element should inherit the font Monospace from your body element.

Aug 06 2016 00:54

@Octopinky does it mean that by the time that the loop gets to "over" the value of b was already 6 that's why it stayed at 6 since the loop says, if the value of words is greater than b, that will be its value?

It's now making sense but hard to explain lol and im not sure if Im right

@Octopinky because the condition is if it's greater than b the it will get the value. since the longest is 6, it stayed at that and did not get the other lower values after?

can someone help me design the slide out tab for my pen please
Norvin Burrus
@ndburrus
Aug 06 2016 00:56
@matiromero2016 ok, follow this: the body element can be styled with css. to do this we can declare a style within the style tags, by making assignments to the body element. do you see the 3 assignments?
  • here: <h1> Hello World</h1> this class="green-text" needs to be removed, as we are going to style the h1 element with css
  • here: h1{font-family:Monospace;} h1 needs to be removed. also, remove the curly braces.
  • here: .green-text{color:green;} remove .green-text. also remove the curly braces.
  • here: body { will need a closing curly brace. (after the 3 assignments)

  • further, you may find the two buttons (chat/compose & markdown - the chat/compose button alternates modes) to the right of the text entry area helpful.
  • you can also edit text after it's been entered by clicking on the three (3) dots to the right of the text entry area (it will appear when you hover to the right of the time stamp).

@Joseyphina you are missing a style attribute. Background-color is an attribute of style. Unless you do not need the background to be green

@Spartachris671 you are doing good. Give yourself time.
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Aug 06 2016 01:50
yeah couple things wrong there @Spartachris671, the idea of creating the red-text class is so that you only have to specify color: red; one time
and if you want something with color red, you give the tag the class "red-text"

@phansheehan

need help with "add borders around your elements"
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Aug 06 2016 01:51
benefit of that is if you specify alot of things with that class but then decide you want to make it say a different shade of red, you only have to change the color inside the <style> tag once, and not all around your HTML
Olga C
@Octopinky
Aug 06 2016 01:52
@performingmonkey23 you can add style to an element by adding style="background:green" insite the opening tag of that element

You can use Bootstrap's col-xs-* classes on form elements, too! This way, our checkboxes will be evenly spread out across the page, regardless of how wide the screen resolution is.

@6791738CODE
Aug 06 2016 03:41
let me try
Norvin Burrus
@ndburrus
Aug 06 2016 03:41
@6791738CODE there needs to be smaller-image class within the img tag
also, the classe needs to be defined in the style tags (like the example code):
<style>
  .larger-image {
    width: 500px;
  }
</style>
Rohan Parikh
@RohanParikh00
Aug 06 2016 03:41
after that, assign it to your img tag like this:
<img class = "smaller-image" src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat" alt="A cute orange cat lying on its back. ">

"Create a second p element after the existing p element with the following kitty ipsum text: Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.

Inside the same <style> tag that contains your red-text class, create an entry for p elements and set the font-size to 16 pixels (16px)."

        <td><input size = "2" autocomplete="off" maxlength="1" style = "padding:8px 0 8px 0px;" id = "08"/></td>

Create a Form Element
You can build web forms that actually submit data to a server using nothing more than pure HTML. You can do this by specifying an action on your form element.

For example:

<form action="/url-where-you-want-to-submit-form-data"></form>

Nest your text field in a form element. Add the action="/submit-cat-photo" attribute to this form element.

bradulz
@bradulz
Aug 06 2016 04:51
@6791738CODE surround with <form> and </form> tags then add action to the starting form tag like <form action = "/submit-cat-photo">

Hi guys, im really desperate. The "IDE" say, that somewhere in this code is an infinite loop, but I can´t find it:

function chunkArrayInGroups(arr, size) {
// Break it up.
var returnarr = [];
var currentarr = [];
for(i = 0; i < arr.length; i+size) {
currentarr = arr.slice(i, i+size + 1);
returnarr.push(currentarr);
}
return returnarr;
}

Brownie Points

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are two ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.

@briwren743 as @lydatech said it's a 12 grid system so the 4 means it takes up 4 of the 12.. so it would make 3 columns

any chance someone could describe in more layman terms what Nesting For Loops is asking me to do? What column class should I use?

column class = 12/number of columns you want in a row.

If you want 2 columns

column class = 12/2 = 6

So you will use col-*-6 for each div inside row.

yah * = x in coding math
for many languages
and you know I bet it's not covered before that in any of the FCC exercises...
@tannerkovach honestly i wouldn't have even though of telling you that either lol!

@DarrenfJ to be honest, the last time i tried asking a question here the person who responded made me feel like an idiot for asking the question and told me I should understand the basic concept from previous waypoints. He may or may not have been right, but no reason to be a dick. Ty for not being a dick!

@tannerkovach yah, I hear yah.. sometimes I see people being a bit curt.. we forget that new people are actually new to it all...
@tannerkovach your case is a good example too cause many coding courses cover the math option early on when they talk about variables and how to work with them
@tannerkovach it's easy to take for granted that someone didn't know that * is x
