Aug 11 2016 00:44
@masterx1220 you can't use width:100px in class... instead create .smaller-image in <style> and put that there. Like .smaller-image {width:100px;}
@masterx1220
.smaller-image {
     width: 100px;
}
Norvin Burrus
@ndburrus
Aug 11 2016 00:48

@masterx1220 we need to follow the example code format/syntax, here (for inside the style tags):

<style>
  .larger-image {
    width: 500px;
  }
</style>

and we also need to identify the class in the img tag.

Hey you guys, I was just wondering what the significance of dead links is. I don't really see how their application would help. Can someone enlighten me?
Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Aug 11 2016 02:07
@Imrvnn Well, in what application do you mean?
Imran Hussein
@Imrvnn
Aug 11 2016 02:10
Well, to put it in context, I'm doing my FCC 2,000 hour challenges and I've just stumbled upon dead links. But all it really says about them is that they are useful when you want to add "a elements" to your site before you know where they will link. It also says it comes in handy when dealing with jQuery, but unfortunately I'm not too sure what any of that really means. 🤔
Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Aug 11 2016 02:13

@Imrvnn well, best way to put it, when they say about putting dead links before you know where they will link, I will build out a website design and structure it all out in HTML and CSS. This can tend to be before I have any directions on where any actual links should go, what they should do, etc, so in the meantime, I need links and they need to be styled, so I'll leave them dead for now.

Another is with jQuery. A popular method of doing things on a page, such as maybe opening a modal, or causing some sort of action on the page, I would need a button of some sort. These tended to be anchor tags that were dead, and were just good for attaching an onClick method to do things in jQuery.

@aryanshetty711 Are we talking about W3Schools? It's good for reference, and no more than that. To fully make use of combining styling and structuring to create a well designed layout takes more than W3S
CSS Tricks has a variety of cool and nifty things to learn such as creating arrows with just CSS and no images. They go into flexbox for layout design. Ways to handle text overflowing in a container. etc.
aryanshetty711

I don't think HTML and CSS is something that you can learn once from any source and become amazing at it. It's good to go through 2 - 3 courses since some will cover materials that others have missed. You will improve over time as you practice by building larger and larger projects.
Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Aug 11 2016 03:16
@aryanshetty711 hmm, as far as I've gone through the classes, slightly more than W3S, but barely. What it does is point you to Bootstrap to help out with css styling. It's quick, easy and works great (as long as you read the docs), but it won't help you get better with CSS unless you study how they designed their framework and how they did their styling. Using Bootstrap just for Bootstrap will only get you so far. Using Bootstrap and then inspecting how it structures things will help you get a better understanding of common practices and themes to use.

@aryanshetty711 And I think I'm coming up to the end of hte Front End Certification course, so there's not much in the sense of improving your CSS skills. It's very basic in just getting you off the ground to understand the very basic of how css works, not how to get better with css
@dturn127 you have .silver-background in your style tag. However you have it nested in a div style block. Nesting does not work in css like that. You don't need the div declaration there.
@dturn127 once you've got that removed, you need to assign silver-background as a class to an html element on your page, specifically a div element it's asking you

Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Aug 11 2016 03:21
@aryanshetty711 I don't know what would be an average css user. If you learn how to work with Bootstrap really well and learn how to modify parts of it to your needs, I guess that might be a decent beginner css user. If you can replicate bunch of Bootstrap styling by yourself hand written and modify with extra stuff, that's a good average user. If you can do fancy stuff with css, that's advanced, I guess? Bootstrap can get you pretty decently in the junior level of things in the startup world.
@dturn127 are you familiar with how to create a css style? If so, lets start with the first steps. It wants you to create a class silver-background. And we want to set a background-color silver. Where would that go in your code?

@Naxell I think @itsacoyote 's point is that BootStrap will help you learn a widely used way to structure your CSS. So you don't have to make so much unnecessary detours in your development.
Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Aug 11 2016 03:26
@Naxell Sure, you can do that if you want. Bootstrap is a great foundation to start from that has everything for the basics. That way you don't shotgun yourself with learning over 9000 things for styling an anchor tag, styling a focus on an anchor, styling lists, modals, containers, grid, quotes, images, etc.

@Naxell you can take it in bites and nothing is stopping you from reading through Bootstrap's CSS to see how they do their styling so you can apply it yourself. A good portion of basic layout styling is pretty similar across the board, so there's common practices you can learn from Bootstrap that can help jumpstart your css knowledge.

@Naxell yeah, and so is CSS in general and using certain stylings to achieve certain things :/
If you read the documentation to know how to use Bootstrap, it's great for a beginner.
@dturn127 close. Inside a div we need to specify what silver-background is. Attributes are a way of doing this.
So for example
<div class="your-classname"></div>

Hello guys I totally need help with this code it keeps telling me to do this but I don't understand it.

Note that in your CSS style element, classes should start with a period. In your HTML elements' class declarations, classes shouldn't start with a period.

Inside your style element, change the h2 selector to .red-text and update the color's value from blue to red.

Give your h2 element the class attribute with a value of 'red-text'.

@UsamaHameed
Aug 11 2016 06:01
@DarrenfJ there are some days you can work your best and there are most of the days you don't wanna work
Warren E Jones
@Warren25
Aug 11 2016 06:02
function lookUpProfile(firstName, prop){
// Only change code below this line
var x = "";
var result = "No such contact";

  for (var i = 0; i < contacts.length; i++) {

    if (firstName === contacts[i].firstName) {

      x = contacts[i];
      result = x[prop];
      if(result !== undefined)
      {console.log(result);}
      break;

    }

   }

   if (firstName === x.firstName && !x.hasOwnProperty(prop)) {

      console.log("No such property");

    }

    if (result === "No such contact") {
      console.log(result);
    }

 }
I know I know, it's very ugly
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Aug 11 2016 06:02
@Warren25 did you declare any of your variables outside the function {}'s
Warren E Jones
@Warren25
Aug 11 2016 06:02
@DarrenfJ naw
and for some really weird reason, there's a disconnect between my Google dev tools and the FCC editor
just typing in a simple console.log statement repeats 5 times on my dev tools, just to add to the frustration
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Aug 11 2016 06:03
@Warren25 just checking.. that killed me for the roman numeral thing.. and i finally was gonna put a ticket in and someone else had already.. the tests only accept what's in the function so it worked in jsfiddle but failed the FCC test

Aug 11 2016 06:07

Harshit Garg
@theharshitgarg
Aug 11 2016 06:08
Well there is no screen in FCC where u can see taht. You can see the results, either on the left panel hen there are tick marks indicating that the test cases pass
@Warren25 please use web browser console log to view the OP
Warren E Jones
@Warren25
Aug 11 2016 06:08

Aug 11 2016 06:27

var Person = function(firstAndLast) {

firstAndLast=firstAndLast.split(" ");//split into first and second name by space

  this.getFirstName=function(){ //function to return first
  return firstAndLast[0];};
    this.getLastName=function(){ // last
  return firstAndLast[1];};
    this.getFullName=function(){
  return firstAndLast[0]+ " "+ firstAndLast[1];}; //and full name

  this.setFirstName=function(name) //function that makes first name = inputted name
  { firstAndLast[0]=name;
};
   this.setLastName=function(name) //same for last
  { firstAndLast[1]=name;
};
 this.setFullName=function(name)//This one is tricky....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????
  { firstAndLast=name;
};

};
var bob = new Person('Bob Ross');

bob.getFirstName();

Quick Object Question: How do i make a correct setFUllName Function.(bit where i have !!!???) I think the .split at the top is messing it up for .fullName as it just returns the first and second letter of first name when i do it like that.

On a side note Is therre a much better way for me to do this? I assume I couldve done something else but I always try my understanding first.

Can I get some tips on how to make quotes dissapear on click after they appear? Right now they stack at the bottom.

heres my code

$("#getClick").on('click', function(){$.getJSON("http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=1&callback=", function(a) {
$(".message").append(a[0].content + "<p>— " + a[0].title + "</p>")
});
});

this is the random quote generator project :|

@SakibSaizeed review/check the class element assignments. carefully follow the lesson instructions, here: :sparkles:

  • Add the animated class to all elements with type button.
  • Add the shake class to all the buttons with class .btn.
  • Add the btn-primary class to the button with id #target1.

the 3 elements we want to target are on the right (in italics).
the code has: "button", ".btn", and "".
also, only one class is being added to each element. the classes are on the left in the above list.

Norvin Burrus
@ndburrus
Aug 11 2016 07:37
''' @SakibSaizeed
  • using Shift + enter will give you additional line feeds (space) for pasting your code. also, the backticks (`) key is located to the left of the number one (#1) key.
  • further, you may find the two buttons (chat/compose & markdown - the chat/compose button alternates modes) to the right of the text entry area helpful.
  • you can also edit (reply, quote, edit, delete) text after it's been entered by clicking on the three (3) dots to the right of the text entry area (it will appear when you hover to the right of the time stamp). or, you can press the up arrow/key.

  • you can also edit (reply, quote, edit, delete) text after it's been entered by clicking on the three (3) dots to the right of the text entry area (it will appear when you hover to the right of the time stamp). or, you can press the up arrow/key.

the short answer is that to get value from key-value pair of an object, you use dot or bracket notation, like so:
object.key;
//or
object[key];

@abisthecodermal okay I see. Does my explanation help?
To get keys of an object in a form of an array, you use the function that you mentioned - Object.keys()
To get a value matching the key, you would use Object.specificKey or Object[anotherKey]
that should be enough to kick it off for you
Abis Mal
@abisthecodermal
Aug 11 2016 09:37

elaborate please @Radascript
Rada
@Radascript
Aug 11 2016 09:40

@abisthecodermal so if you have an object like:

var myObj = {key1: "value1", key2: "value 2"}

when you say
myObj.key1 it will return "value1"
when you say
myObj[key2] it will return "value2"

hi everyone, I am working on the "Smallest Common Multiple" challenge. but one of the test does not make sense. can someone explain to me how 60 is the smallest common multiple of 5 and 1 ?

the test says :

use the key to get the value?
