Hi. I'm having trouble with prioritizing one style over another (challenge 42) I can't seem to find help in the book I use for help. I created a style just for the h1, color pink. It turns my text pink, but it doesn't satisfy the h1 element having class of pink-text, and the <style> having a pink-text CSS class.

Hi there! I'm on "Build a Personal Portfolio Webpage" challenge now. It says "don't look into the source", but I looked, just to check if it has jQuery in it. And it has. But jQuery hadn't been covered in previous challenges and it was said that only Bootstrap is required. So my question is what the point of this challenge? Should I make a page with less functionality than the example, using only the knowledges I have now, or should I google the code for this functionality and copypaste it without understanding? Or maybe I should learn it by myself? But Map shows that next challenges are dedicated to JS.

add a submit button to your form. Clicking this button will send the data from your form to the URL you specified with your form's action attribute.

Here's an example submit button:

<button type="submit">this button submits the form</button>

Add a submit button to your form element with type submit and "Submit" as its text.
I have figured out everything but Your submit button should have the attribute type set to submit.

@Margaret2 I'm not sure what the grid is?
and you can use col-md-offset-* to define position as well
so if you have an element with the classes "col-md-offset-4 col-md-4" that element will have 4 columns of space on either side and it will be centered

Use rgb for the color red.
Code: <style>

color: rgb(255, 0, 0)

.orchid-text {
color: rgb(218, 112, 214)
}
.sienna-text {
color: rgb(160, 82, 45)
}
.blue-text {
color: rgb(0, 0, 255)
}
</style>

<h1 class="red-text">I am red!</h1>

<h1 class="orchid-text">I am orchid!</h1>

<h1 class="sienna-text">I am sienna!</h1>

<h1 class="blue-text">I am blue!</h1>

what is wrong with my font style tag?
Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Aug 17 2016 02:09
@hangmchu monospace is not a specific font, it's a font style type. Every computer should have a monospace style font already installed. So the font showing on your page to someone will use a monospace font, but may look different on a Mac versus a Windows PC
Boris

Aug 17 2016 02:10
@hangmchu it's also why usually multiple fonts will be listed for a font-family, to ensure that you can fall back on a specific font if that PC doesn't have that font supported. For example Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif. Helvetica and Arial are sans-serif fonts, but Helvetica is only on a Mac, so we fall to Arial on a Windows PC. If for some reason the PC doesn't have Helvetica or Arial, we'll go with some generic sans-serif font that PC might have.
Hang Chu

Aug 17 2016 02:11
@itsacoyote How come it can display differently from each other? And is Lobster some kind of a special font family?
Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Aug 17 2016 02:11
@hangmchu hopefully the latest response explains the displaying differently thing. Lobster is a special designed font by Google, no PC technically has that installed. You'll have to download and install it on your PC to have it, otherwise, your website needs to access it to use for the site.

@caseycrosby you want to add the font family lobster similar to how the p tag is doing it inside the style tag
@caseycrosby you're close, need to remove that < from the left of the h2.
We don't use html tags in the style section
Justin Woodward

@caseycrosby put three backtacks, new line with your code, then new line with three more backtacks to format your code properly for everyone to see :)

@caseycrosby :sparkles:
  • the style tag/element should have 4 elements: .red-text, .smaller-image, h2, and p (you have 2 of them)
  • the h2 element (underneath the style tag/s) should have a class, and wrap the CatPhotoApp text
  • remove this <h2 { font-family: Lobster; } before the closing style tag
  • missing a 2, 1st h...
  • this rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p> is missing from the last p element!

@hskhawaja I see, you must make a separate css line for the p element
@hskhawaja So instead of .red-text { color: red; font-si.. }
@hskhawaja You would make put p { font-size: 16px; }

@123xylem why not give your buttons a distinct ID for each digit, and a class to represent numbers and operators?

that way you don’t have to do a fetch of the button value each time, because you know it’s 8

You need an a element that links to "http://www.freecatphotoapp.com".
Your a element should have the anchor text of "cat photos"
Create a new p element around your a element.
Your a element should be nested within your new p element.
Your p element should have the text "View more " (with a space after it).
Your a element should not have the text "View more".
Make sure each of your p elements has a closing tag.
Make sure each of your a elements has a closing tag.

@Nachosuperxs I would imagine either the deshtop folder or the github repo is the one you want to keep...
if you get rid of the hidden git files on your desktop it would do it.. but then you'd have to delete the github repo (of course I am assuming the files you want to keep are on your desktop pc)

@Nachosuperxs stackoverflow is saying do this: "If you just inited it, you can just delete .git. Typically:

rm -rf .git"

although yer going to lose commits.. you'll probably just have whatever the last version is of the file after you do that..

@JshWrnr I think what it is, is its not as clear to me when something goes wrong, why it is happening
for example, if I screw up on back-end. My server might throw a null reference exception and I can go and debug it and find out what the deal is pretty quickly... Plus I just have a hunch
but for example with css, sometimes stuff just... wont work... and I have no idea why
which is funny because it seems most ppl around here feel the opposite: they think back-end is hard and boring lol
Josh Werner
@jshwrnr
Aug 17 2016 05:56
yeh true that. but you get the hang of it. once you do front end for a long time you start thinking of the possiblities of what could have thrown the bug and then you go through them and can fix it pretty simply.

Aug 17 2016 05:58
Yeah thats true. Its interesting because although I love back-end and prefer it... I also appreciate great looking websites so I cant just sit there and do back-end only with some crappy template

Brownie Points

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are two ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.

and in the rare case there is an element that is truly unique it will still be styled with a class and the class name may have some naming convention to indicate that it is considered "unique" like an id

to have multiple classes for the same element you just add a space, for example: ( <h1 class="firstClassName secondClassName">h1 Text </h1> )

Like headers or a list of search result items might have class ".header" but the header of the overall page layout may have class ".i-header" with the "i" indicating it is a unique element like an id value would be used for in the past

Hi guys. I'm having trouble with an IF statement for my portfolio challenge: http://codepen.io/bsummersgb/pen/rLRzky (line 18 in the JS window)

If you have a look at the code, it basically ensures the mobile menu is closed if a user resizes their browser window from mobile to desktop size - which it does successfully. However, I also want the IF statement to remove the class of ".active" from the "#nav-toggle" element so that the cross returns to a hamburger menu. Can anyone see why this is not working? Thanks in advance!

@bsummersgb I think that's happening because return immediately returns a value to the function, so it's never getting to the second return statement. Just a guess though

Override All Other Styles by using Important
Yay! We just proved that in-line styles will override all the CSS declarations in your style element.

But wait. There's one last way to override CSS. This is the most powerful method of all. But before we do it, let's talk about why you would ever want to override CSS.

In many situations, you will use CSS libraries. These may accidentally override your own CSS. So when you absolutely need to be sure that an element has specific CSS, you can use !important

Let's go all the way back to our pink-text class declaration. Remember that our pink-text class was overridden by subsequent class declarations, id declarations, and in-line styles.

Let's add the keyword !important to your pink-text element's color declaration to make 100% sure that your h1 element will be pink.

An example of how to do this is:

need to add: color: pink !important;

sorry

  • using Shift + enter will give you additional line feeds (space) for pasting your code. also, the backticks (`) key is located to the left of the number one (#1) key.
  • further, you may find the two buttons (chat/compose & markdown - the chat/compose button alternates modes) to the right of the text entry area helpful.
  • you can also edit (reply, quote, edit, delete) text after it's been entered by clicking on the three (3) dots to the right of the text entry area (it will appear when you hover to the right of the time stamp). or, you can press the up arrow/key.
