Xavier
@XavierNR
Aug 20 2016 00:09
@beehitch I mean the language of English itself. The multiple definitions and pronounciations(based on context) of the the exact same word is stupid. It's why English is the hardest language to learn.
@Octopinky Not really. Did you want something specific?
People say Chinese is the hardest due to the alphabet size, but that's due to the fact they don't double up on definitions like English does.
Olga C
@Octopinky
Aug 20 2016 00:10
@XavierNR how can you judge how something is messed up without having something to compare it to?
Xavier
@XavierNR
Aug 20 2016 00:11
You only need to look at the structure of the language to know it's stupid. You don't need a comparison to know something is bad.
A comparison only serves to prove something is worse or better than.
Or in rare cases the same as.
o.o I just realized, my new project is likely to have over a thousand lines of code.. xD

=An element's margin controls the amount of space between an element's border and surrounding elements.

Here, we can see that the green box and the red box are nested within the yellow box. Note that the red box has more margin than the green box, making it appear smaller.

When you increase the green box's margin, it will increase the distance between its border and surrounding elements.

Aug 20 2016 00:23

Xavier
@XavierNR
Aug 20 2016 00:25
@paul-18 The best way for you to udnerstand is the play with the margin controls in the code. See how it changes with different input from you.
Pallavdeep singh
@paul-18
Aug 20 2016 00:26
like a small box have more margin??
how
@XavierNR
Xavier
@XavierNR
Aug 20 2016 00:26

@gavtherav

<style>

h2 {color: blue;}

</style>

<h2>CatPhotoApp</h2>

Correct @paul-18
@paul-18 The more margin you have, the further something will be away from an edge, like lots of left margin will put something further to the right of a page.
LPR-309
@LPR-309
Aug 20 2016 00:28
@paul-18 Think of it like a '3 layer' diagram. Padding, Border, Margin. Padding is space 'inside' the box, border is the border, margin space 'outside'
Xavier
@XavierNR
Aug 20 2016 00:28
@paul-18 So if you add top right bottom and left margin and add lots of it, the center box will be smaller.

Challenge Create a Class to Target with jQuery Selectors

Not every class needs to have corresponding CSS. Sometimes we create classes just for the purpose of selecting these elements more easily using jQuery.

For this we use the target class on the button elements.

@amnajaveri Depends on what you're trying to line up. Anything in the columns will appear next to each other (horizontal) for a total of 12 columns.
What's the lesson asking you to put inside the columns?

Your buttons should all be nested within the same div element with the class row.
LPR-309
@LPR-309
Aug 20 2016 01:25
@amnajaveri You'll want to wrap those first three buttons - Like, Info, Delete - in a <div class="row"> first, then *each* individual button has to be wrapped in a<div class=col-xs-4>` inside that.

Which lesson
Norvin Burrus
@ndburrus
Aug 20 2016 02:06
@Kakatooruki :point_up: August 19, 2016 9:59 PM
ok, we need to change the h2 (in the example code) to p, right? because we are working with a p element. also, we need to update the color from red to blue, see that?
Kat
@Kakatooruki
Aug 20 2016 02:07
So, I just change the h2 to a p?
Norvin Burrus
@ndburrus
Aug 20 2016 02:09
@amnajaveri :sparkles:
  • we need to follow the instructions, here:
    Delete the .red-text, p, and .smaller-image CSS declarations from your style element so that the only declarations left in your style element are h2 and thick-green-border.
  • next we need to:
    Then delete the p element that contains a dead link., here:
    <p>Click here for <a href="#">cat photos</a>.</p>
  • continue through instructions/requirements...
Kat

Norvin Burrus

Create a script element making sure it is valid and has a closing tag.
You should add $(document).ready(function() { to the beginning of your script element.
Close your $(document).ready(function() { function with });
When I put the $(document).ready(function() { into the script element, the last 2 boxes are checked but the first isn't. I'm confused on what I'm missing?
LPR-309
@LPR-309
Aug 20 2016 02:40
@justinhoffmann You need an opening and closing <script> tag. The $(document).ready part goes inside that. Right now it's "inside" the tag itself, like an attribute.

I'm working on "Seek and Destroy" lesson. I put in...

function destroyer(arr) {
  // Remove all the values
var arrArr = arguments[0];
var args = [arguments[1], arguments[2]];
  function weedOut(value){
    if(value === args[0] || value === args[1]){
      return value;
  }}
  var finalArr = arrArr.filter(weedOut);
return finalArr;
}
destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);

I'm getting [1,2,3,1,2,3] as the result. I should get [1,1] right?

my bad I meant.

function destroyer(arr) {
  // Remove all the values
var arrArr = arguments[0];
var args = [arguments[1], arguments[2]];
  function weedOut(value){
    if(value !== args[0] || value !== args[1]){
      return value;
  }}
  var finalArr = arrArr.filter(weedOut);
return finalArr;
}
destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);

I'm getting [1,2,3,1,2,3] as the result. I should get [1,1] right?

yes @justinhoffmann :) a little about codepen: codepen has separate windows for html, css, and javascript... for this challenge you will prbly just use the first two...so what you would normally type in script tags, you will put in css window without the script tags... all of your divs (if you use bootstrap), headers, p and other structure will go in the html window. you also need to add a css file to the little gear in the css window for it to work. the bootstrap one is a good one.. just google get bootstrap

@Omanroslan we need to follow the example code format/syntax, here:

h1 {
  font-size: 30px;
}

note: the example code uses an h2 element. the code we need requires a p element.

Hi, guys. I'm new to JS and I'm trying to understand how HTTP request receiving data works. And I can't understand why this block of code works that way
// how come JSONData variable is different inside and
// outside the block?

var JSONData;

function loadJSON(path) {
  var xhr = new XMLHttpRequest();

  xhr.open('GET', path);
  xhr.timeout = 1000;

  xhr.onload = function(evt) {
    JSONData = JSON.parse(evt.srcElement.response);
    console.log(JSONData); // >> [Object, Object]
  }

  console.log(JSONData); // >> undefined
  xhr.send();

}

Hey guys for the nested for loop section can someone explain to me how it works i just cant understand how when i alerted both the values of i and j the results come out like 1,2,3,4,5,6 (what the array had) how is one value coming out at a time even though i alerted both i and j
```
ar arr = [
[1,2], [3,4], [5,6]
];
for (var i=0; i < arr.length; i++) {
for (var j=0; j < arr[i].length; j++) {
console.log(arr[i][j]);
}
}
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Aug 20 2016 05:22
@ChrisKissoon it's nested array
imagine arr[i values} refers to an array inside an array
and arr[i j values] refers to position j in array i in the original array
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Aug 20 2016 05:24
or in math talk.. imagine x = [1,2] and y=[3.4] and z=[5,6]
the array could be written as [x,y,z]
but if wanted to point to the number 3 you would have to refer to arr[y,0]
if that makes any kind of sense
Aug 20 2016 06:16
@caseym94 is the css file in the same directory and named "Style.css"? Also I'm new but perhaps change src to href : <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="Style.css">
Shusil Banjade
@shusil123
Aug 20 2016 06:16
@caseym94 , Probably because of Style.css. The name of your external css file is style.css, I guess, with s in lowercase, but you are linking with uppercase S.
And we give href to the stylesheets not src
Like @jpmacdonald1 has said <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="Style.css">.
Shusil Banjade
@caseym94 , It works just fine if you write it like <link> . The problem was with href. You were writing src instead and probably the name and directory of the style.css was wrong, too.
well, revisit the instructions, here:
Create a class called smaller-image and use it to resize the image
note the style (name) within the style tags is (with a period) .smaller-image, while the class within the img element is named (w/o the period) smaller-image!
<p> Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p>
ou need 2 p elements with Kitty Ipsum text.
Make sure each of your p elements has a closing tag.
Your p element should contain the first few words of the provided additional kitty ipsum text.
The first p element should have the class red-text.
Do not add a class attribute to the second p element.
Between the style tags, give the p elements font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.
Thats the mission and i haven't done the last one
You need an a element that links to http://freecatphotoapp.com
Make sure your a element has a closing tag.
Hi guys I need help with the Stand in Line challenge, this is it described "Write a function nextInLine which takes an array (arr) and a number (item) as arguments. Add the number to the end of the array, then remove the first element of array. The nextInLine function should then return the element that was removed.”
This is my solution which appeared to be wrong;
function nextInLine(arr, item) {
arr.push(item);
arr.shift(0);
return arr.shift(0); // Change this line
}
Shusil Banjade
@shusil123
Aug 20 2016 10:06
@JOH2242082 , No, this won't. You can't select multiple elements. You have to write each lines with different (but single) selectors, and then remove the class.
JOH2242082
@JOH2242082
Just give them all a one off class
Then you can select them all in one
Shusil Banjade
Aug 20 2016 10:08
You need to create different line for every selectors. @JOH2242082 .
