I am really having trouble with this and can't seem to figure out whats going on. I am stuck at the section for using an ID Attribute to Style and Element. Here is the code I have posted and it apparently isn't right. Here is the code I am using in my form ID element: <form id="cat-photo-form"action="/submit-cat-element""cat-photo-element">

why does FCC tell you to make div classes for single elements? wouldnt it just be easier to enter in class declarations at the beginning of the element. whats the benefit of divs for single elements

why can't i do the smaller-image thing?
wehre do i put the .smaller-image ? is it under style or what
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Sep 18 2016 00:23
@rsarto213 you create is in the CSS (the style part) and reference it on the element you want to change in the hmtl (I think that's the <img>)
@rsarto213 do you know the syntax for both of those actions?
ioan
@isrompower
Sep 18 2016 00:28
@rsarto213 in you're "style" section:

Sep 18 2016 00:30
so do i put the smaller-image under the img src= thing
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Sep 18 2016 00:31
@rsarto213 what @isrompower posted you put in the CSS section (between the <style></style> tags) that's part 1 (also add a closing } to the .smaller-image {... : .....; }
@rsarto213 then for part 2 to add the class smaller-image to whatever it is asking you to change/affect for the exercise...
@rsarto213 if I wanted it to affect the h2 i would add <h2 class="class-name"> note: use the same name but without the . (dot)

those style tags mark that section off as being for CSS type syntax... later on you move all your CSS to another file and refer to it at the top via a link.. but for now, it's all in one file..
<style>

... a bunch of CSS

</style>
is the CSS and the rest below the </style> is the html part

@tokimoki just follow that general idea to nest things...html consists of elements shaped as boxes within boxes
Adam Stevenson
@stevensona
Sep 18 2016 01:05
@viharichowdary any style applied to body will "Cascade" down to child elements, hence the name.
@viharichowdary therefore, if you apply a style to body, it will be applied to an h1 element, unless h1 has a different value assigned to the property.
Nam Nguyen
@denominatortron
Sep 18 2016 01:06
@viharichowdary to piggypack off of @stevensona , that works for any nested elements. so styles applied to outer divs will apply to nested divs

How far are you into FCC @jadefox10200
Whats actually my biggest Problem. Dealing with switching between FCC and CS50
Thats
jadefox10200
@jadefox10200
Sep 18 2016 01:58
@bomholt I kinda doubt they're having Harvard staff grading a bunch of stuff for students who are paying less than $100 a head. It's more likely automated and the only reason it takes time is because they're running it through a comparison check against all other submissions.
I'm tempted to answer one of the form questions totally wrong to see if it affects my score.
@rsarto213 What happened to the link? Why did you delete it?
Adam Stevenson
@stevensona
Sep 18 2016 01:59
@bomholt As someone who has not much experience with either, I believe that FCC is geared more towards practical skills, while CS50 is more about learning the theory and how to think like a programmer.
jadefox10200
@jadefox10200
Sep 18 2016 02:00
@stevensona Kinda. But personally, I'm only halfway through CS50 and it's made my programming much easier.
Adam Stevenson
@stevensona
Sep 18 2016 02:01
@jadefox10200 That's kinda the point I think.
@jadefox10200 You start to see "ohhhhh that's why I was doing that."
Instead of just memorizing some CSS and JS crap and getting something working.
Michael Bomholt
@bomholtm
Sep 18 2016 02:03
@stevensona exactly ... Thats why im doing both. CS50 is to get a better understanding for every programming language ... Basically groundwork FCC is web development and about getting practise with projects
At least thats how i feel
Adam Stevenson
@stevensona
Sep 18 2016 02:04
You're not going to list "oh hey I made a spellchecker in C" on your resume, but you sure as hell will learn a lot doing it.
jadefox10200
@jadefox10200
Sep 18 2016 02:04
They have an awesome instructor too. I did many online coding things but should've done CS50 first. Otherwise, you're kinda limited to what you've been shown. This is all of course my opinion. And like @bomholt said, rather than try to learn JS first, learning how to program in general is pretty valuable.

Adam Stevenson
@stevensona
Sep 18 2016 02:07
@directnirvana no problem my dude
@jadefox10200 my opinion so far of FCC is that it's all about hitting the ground running making projects. It's all centered around HTML/CSS/JS.
There isn't anything about Data structures, and even the algorithms challenges don't cover "Big O notation" that I've seen so far, which is a big fucking deal.

@bomholt Ok cool.
Adam Stevenson
@stevensona
Sep 18 2016 02:12
@jadefox10200 and there's nothing really wrong with that. I feel as though the most important thing is to just stay in the code as much as possible and continually try to improve. Pair programming is great for that too.
@jadefox10200 keep writing programs, creating little projects that interest you, solving problems, etc.

@bomholt I use MySQL only because I was told it was similar to Oracle and I could easily install it on my machine for free. Golang also had good support for it.

Give the parent of the #target1 element a background-color of red.

Your left-well element should have a red background.
You should use the .parent() function to modify this element.
The .parent() method should be called on the #target1 element.
Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element.

$(document).ready(function() { $("#target1").parent("#left-well").css("background-color", "red"); $("#target1").prop("disabled", true); $("#target4").remove(); $("#target2").appendTo("#right-well"); $("#target5").clone().appendTo("#left-well");

does that make sense?

Hi! my task is this : "The .parent() method should be called on the #target1 element."
So this is my <script> element ``` <script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#target1").css("color", "red");
$("#target1").prop("disabled", true);
$("#target4").remove();
$("#target2").appendTo("#right-well");
$("#target5").clone().appendTo("#left-well");

});
</script> ```

i tried declaring the class .container-fluid in style
and the div element later

<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

<style>

.red-text {
color: red;
}

h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
}

p {
font-size: 16px;
font-family: Monospace;
}

.thick-green-border {
border-color: green;
border-width: 10px;
border-style: solid;
border-radius: 50%;
}

.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
.container-class{}
</style>

<div class="container-class">

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>Click here for <a href="#">cat photos</a>.</p>

<a href="#"><img class="smaller-image thick-green-border" src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat" alt="A cute orange cat lying on its back. "></a>

<p>Things cats love:</p>

<ul>
<li>cat nip</li>
<li>laser pointers</li>
<li>lasagna</li>
</ul>

<p>Top 3 things cats hate:</p>

<ol>
<li>flea treatment</li>
<li>thunder</li>
<li>other cats</li>
</ol>

<form action="/submit-cat-photo">
<label><input type="radio" name="indoor-outdoor"> Indoor</label>
<label><input type="radio" name="indoor-outdoor"> Outdoor</label>
<label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Loving</label>
<label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Lazy</label>
<label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Crazy</label>
<input type="text" placeholder="cat photo URL" required>
<button type="submit">Submit</button>
</form>

these are the challenges I couldn't clear: 1. Your div element should have the class container-fluid.
2.Make sure you have nested all HTML elements in .container-fluid.

@NadaZaki padding is the space inside your element's border, and margin is space outside your element's border

@MustagheesButt so if i increased the padding the margin should automatically decrease and vice versa

@Nifled Add a Negative Margin to an Element in that challenge 2 boxes are put in one other box and all i can see is that margin and padding are two opposite things. i read the definition of both of them adn each time the imagethat shows in my brain tells me thats they are opposite
Erick Delfin
@Nifled
Sep 18 2016 08:25
@NadaZaki I know, it can be a bit confusing... but just remember these two things:
  • Use margin to separate the block from things outside it
  • Use padding to move the contents away from the edges of the block.

@annunirmal NaN === NaN is false. to determine falsy values use the Global function
Boolean(...) it will make this much simplier

greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 18 2016 09:31

@annunirmal you can use it as callback to your filter

function bouncer(arr) {
  return arr.filter(Boolean); //<------ Boolean(...) is a Global function
}

you can also use it as a constructor function to create object
the syntax is
new Boolean(....)
but as a regular function use it without the keyword new

@jayanders123

so to add multiple classes to an element, you just separate them with space in between

Need help with truncating a string in this challenge:
https://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/truncate-a-string

I don't understand what am I supposed to do...

if num is 3 or less then we add 3 to the str length, if str length is bigger than number then we truncate it by adding 3 dots... if you run the test then 3rd test sends 2 arguments both have exactly same length and result is supposed to be without dots... Too much for me ;_;

@Deekaara - if "orange-text" is being used as an ID, the CSS in the <style> tags should have #orange-text as the selector. All IDs in the style section are preceded by #, classes by . and html elements just by their name.

The problem with inline styles is that if you want to make a change, you might have to change it in a lot of places, whereas if it was a class that you were using, you change it in one place and it applies to all the places with that class.

Ken Haduch

Sep 18 2016 11:43
@Deekaara - oh, and if the text is supposed to be orange, you have to use "orange" for the color in that #orange-text style rule.
Mario Rodrigues
@MarioJr92
Sep 18 2016 11:47
@dehi15697 The color green should have # in front of the number, all hex codes starts with a # in front of the six or 3 digit number

@venjooo When using bootstrap you want to put sections of your code in .container or .container-fluid to give it a responsive feel. So that it resizes the html you put inside of it as you resize the actual page
I wise there was a way to resize the preview window to more than just a fixed mobile view. You need to see in action to fully understand it.
