Anyone got a good link for a simple hash function in C. Not encryption, just to take 500,000 strings and put into an array of 500 linked lists.

@VaseJS - just to throw a little curveball here, you can do value = but not for this problem, if you want to read the value out of an object and store it in the value variable. But in this case, you are not trying to do that, you are trying to assign the contents of value to the object specified by id and prop. So what you just posted looks correct for that!

Hi, Can anyone see where I am going wrong here:
function nextInLine(arr, item) {
  // Your code here
  arr.push(item);

  item = arr[0];

  arr.pop();

  return item; // Change this line
}

// Test Setup
var testArr = [1,2,3,4,5];

// Display Code
console.log("Before: " + JSON.stringify(testArr));
console.log(nextInLine(testArr, 6)); // Modify this line to test
console.log("After: " + JSON.stringify(testArr));

@jadefox10200 @Manish-Giri I still don’t get the logic of the second part
“If prop is "tracks" but the album doesn't have a "tracks" property, create an empty array before adding the new value to the album's corresponding property.”
 else if (prop === "tracks" && collection[id].hasOwnProperty[prop] === false) {
    collection[id][prop] = [];
    collection[id][prop] = value;
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Sep 25 2016 00:26
@VaseJS - there is a slight misunderstanding there in your code - a couple things to look at
  • the .hasOwnProperty method is a function, so it should use parentheses and not square brackets to pass the prop value to it.
  • The first part of your condition collection[id][prop] === "tracks" - you should just be checking prop === "tracks" - testing the value of the incoming function argument props to see if you should be focusing on changes to the "tracks" property.

@VaseJS to check if a property called tracks doesn't exist, you can have something like this

if(prop === "tracks" && value !== "") {
    if(collection[id][prop]) {

    }

what I did here is - the outer if says that prop is tracks, and in the inner if, I have this expression

  if(collection[id][prop])

this is another way to write

 if(collection[id][prop]) === true

@VaseJS Comment out your h1 element so that it is not visible on your page.
Leave your h2 element uncommented so that it is visible on your page.
Comment out your p element so that it is not visible on your page.
Be sure to close each of your comments with -->.
Do not change the order of the h1 h2 or p in the code.

<h2>CatPhotoApp</h2>

-->

Remember that in order to start a comment, you need to use <!-- and to end a comment, you need to use -->

Here you'll need to end the comment before your h2 element begins.

Comment out your h1 element and your p element, but leave your h2 element uncommented.

@VaseJS yeah, the only reason I gave out this structure

  if(prop === "tracks" && value !== "") {

  }

  else if(prop !== "tracks" && value !== "") {

  }

was because I hoped you would nest more if/else statements inside! Hence the spaces!

if(prop === "tracks" && value !== "") {
    if(collection[id][prop]) {
      (collection[id].tracks).push(value);
    }
    else {
        let arr = [];

    }

  }

@VaseJS Right so if collection[id].hasOwnPropery(prop) exists already (meaning one is already there, then I push the value.
if(collection[id].hasOwnProperty(prop)){
      collection[id][prop].push(value);
    }else{
      collection[id][prop] = [value];

The second part of that sentence is getting me. How do I check that the prop is in the same obj of the firstName?

Here are the instructions:
We have an array of objects representing different people in our contacts lists.

A lookUpProfile function that takes firstName and a property (prop) as arguments has been pre-written for you.

The function should check if firstName is an actual contact's firstName and the given property (prop) is a property of that contact.

If both are true, then return the "value" of that property.

If firstName does not correspond to any contacts then return "No such contact"

If prop does not correspond to any valid properties then return "No such property"

@VaseJS okay, first thing

function lookUpProfile(firstName, prop) {
// Only change code below this line
  if (firstName === contacts.firstName && contacts.hasOwnProperty(prop)) {
    return contacts.prop;

  } else if (firstName !== contacts.firstName) {
    return "No such contact";

  } else if (contacts.prop.hasOwnProperty === false) {
    return "No such property";

  }
// Only change code above this line
}

Do you know what contacts is?

VaseJS
@VaseJS
Sep 25 2016 05:22
the array of objs
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Sep 25 2016 05:22
right
so contacts has multiple objects in it
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Sep 25 2016 05:23

@VaseJS this is how i did it in pseudocode.. I had to go look it over and write it up...
i went through the contacts list and if firstName of the contact === firstName I grabbed the i of the loop.

If it didn't get any hits, it returned no contacts...

if it did, i then went through the 'keys' in that contact (remember this an array of objects)

for (var key in contacts[i]) { ... }

and if the key matched prop i returned the contact[i][prop] otherwise 'no such property'

VaseJS
@VaseJS
Sep 25 2016 05:23
damn, as you pointed tha simple thing out, i just noticed its an array. Ha. But continue :D
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Sep 25 2016 05:23
and each such object has a firstName and other property, like likes
@VaseJS so, whatever your code is, must work for every object in that array, right?
Darren
