@kingsleychino and what is it asking u to do?
@rphares also i got why i had my problem in the first place.
rphares
@rphares
Oct 07 2016 00:01

@kingsleychino , you need the .smaller-image class to be like it was, ONLY

.smaller-image {
width: 100px;

take the other stuff out, and put all those details,

border-color:green;
border-width:10px;
border-style:solid;

in the .thick-green-border class in the css, right now you only have one

Each of your Bootstrap buttons should be nested within its own div element with the class col-xs-4.
this is the part I keep getting stuck on
rphares
@rphares
Oct 07 2016 00:01
Great! The second part is to add the individual divs, col-xs-4. @s2scarlett
unity4a
@unity4a
Oct 07 2016 00:02
@s2scarlett yes so you actually have to add a <div> before and close it after each one of your buttons
Sonny
@s2scarlett
Oct 07 2016 00:02
? @rphares
rphares
@rphares
Oct 07 2016 00:02
you just put all the buttons in ONE big div (the row) but each one gets put inside its own smaller div, with the class col-xs-4. @s2scarlett
(so sorry, copied and pasted the wrong bit!)
rphares
@rphares
Oct 07 2016 00:03
So, before each button, open a div with that class div class= "col-xs-4" and close it right after the button, </div> @s2scarlett

Hey everyone.. I have just started and I am asked to end the comment before the h2 elements begins. I need to comment out h1 and p only, and I need to leave h2 uncommented.. This is what I did, but it is giving me an error..
<!--h1-->

<h1>Hello World</h1>

<h2>CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>Hello Paragraph</p>
<!--p-->

unity4a
@unity4a
Oct 07 2016 00:04
then add the class=col-xs-4 to your div for each button so it looks like <div classcol-xs-4>button code"</div> and so on for the rest of the buttons @s2scarlett

rphares
@rphares
Oct 07 2016 00:05
You can apply two classes to the same element by putting BOTH class names in the same set of "" , but separate them with a space,
myCODERjourney
@myCODERjourney
Oct 07 2016 00:05
@rphares why do i need to delete them?
rphares
@rphares
Oct 07 2016 00:06
example <img class= "smaller-image second-class" @kingsleychino . See how i put a space and another class name? Put your class name thick-green-border nest to smaller-image in your img tag, @kingsleychino
It tests to see if you have removed the comments... which means if you have them, even though they arent around the element, it'll fail. (its not the best test, i admit, but...) Try deleting them ;) @myCODERjourney

@rphares this is what it is asking me to do: Comment out HTML
Remember that in order to start a comment, you need to use <!-- and to end a comment, you need to use -->

Here you'll need to end the comment before your h2 element begins.

Comment out your h1 element and your p element, but leave your h2 element uncommented.

they get the jobs by learning the stuff here, creating projects for their portfolios, and passing interviews with what they've learned
the certificates dont help much most places (there may be please that care... but its not most places)

then, add the class to the element, <p class= "pink-text" or, whatever element and class name its supposed to be :blush:

Prioritize One Style Over Another is the class lesson
rphares
@rphares
Oct 07 2016 00:47
Okay-- so first, make a class in the style section. heres an EXAMPLE using the class name .example-class. (your class name should be .pink-textand the color should be blue), @kvngalland
<style>
  body {
    background-color: black;
    font-family: Monospace;
    color: green;
  }

  .example-class{
    color: blue;
  }
</style>
Second, apply the class you made to the element below it. this example applies the class i made above to a p element. (but use YOUR class and apply it to the <h1> in your code):
<p class="example-class">Hello World!</p>
^^ see how i added class="my-class-name" to the elements tag? Do the same with yours :blush:

@aservin80 You're adding a class to document, and the part beyond that is messed up. You need to add to that:
$(document).ready(function() {
  add code here
});
^ That part says, "Run this code inside the function when document is loaded".
So what is it asking you to add those classes to? What element?

Is anybody able to help me? I'm doing a challenge with these requirements:

You need 2 p elements with Kitty Ipsum text.
Make sure each of your p elements has a closing tag.
Your p element should contain the first few words of the provided additional kitty ipsum text.
The first p element should have the class red-text.
Do not add a class attribute to the second p element.
Between the style tags, give the p elements font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.

This is my code:

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}
p {
font-size:16px;
}
</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>
<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

Apparently y p element doesn't contain the first few words of the provided additional Kitty Ipsum text.

@aservin80 you have the ready method on the document object, inside of it you have, what we call, an anonymous function
@aservin80 inside of the body of the function(between the curly brackets) goes all of the jQuery code
@aservin80 the reason is that the ready method will make sure that all the HTML on the page is loaded and when it's done loading, it'll run the code inside of the anonymous function

Oct 07 2016 02:26
@IMBurbank Hmm. If you can run that link outside of Codepen and get a result, then it's something with Codepen and the API interfering with each other causing it. I'm not too sure of this since I did mine locally / with Github Pages. I know you can get use a cross-origin proxy like [crossorigin.me] to get around CORS errors if JSONP isn't available. It's not ideal, but it's one solution.

@xSpideyx see that example code, when you call the evaluate function you pass in a number, and then you switch over that particular number, which is contained in the variable num in this case
For as many cases as you have, the value of num is checked against each case to see if there is a match, and this is where you do any operation or logic, like setting the answer to odd or even, as the case maybe
You don't do any of this inside the switch() paranthesis itself - that's just for the item you're switching on

p {

}
</style>

<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

@CoreyK90 this is an example, the part between the style tags is CSS. That's how you style HTML elements on the page.
The part that comes after the closing </style> is all HTML. Those are the elements you style through CSS.
In this example, I target the p HTML element to set it's color to blue.
The general way to write CSS is

selector {
property  : value;
}

http://codepen.io/chunnali/pen/BLmWgr?editors=1100 what can I do with my code so that when the screen is smaller, the text doesn’t look so narrow?
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Oct 07 2016 02:46

@jameselliottoh easy version:
1: go in google font and find the one you like. https://fonts.google.com/
2: in the head section of you page, copy the link that will look somethig like: <link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Slabo+27px" rel="stylesheet">
3: ?? magic of linking and browsers ???

4: you can reference your font through CSS font properties :)
5: profit.

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 07 2016 02:48
@chunnali - you could use the bootstrap grid and make it so that at a narrower width, your quote section will occupy the full width of the screen - that's the purpose of the grid system in Bootstrap (or any other CSS library that implements a grid system.)
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Oct 07 2016 02:48
@chunnali perhaps using a variable size unit like vw or % of the viewport instead of a fixed pixel size.

However I suggest you to use git clean -n first to see those file, and maybe force the with -f later :)

@Manish-Giri mmmmmh... That's, weird.
I may have totally misunderstood the documentation about git clean.

Probably what you wanted instead of clean is a rm chached.

@Manish-Giri there should be way to recover those files if you want to.
From using utilities (extundelete) or if you ever add them with git add
Girzima
@Girzima
Oct 07 2016 03:32
@EvilCowOverlord First you nest your <i></i> between your <button></button
@EvilCowOverlord This will put a paper plane icon in the bar. Next to that you want your "submit" text, so just put that between your i tags

@Manish-Giri further researches pointed me to the fact that git clean WILL REMOVE file not only from your .git but from your local disk.
Actually the usage in human words can be described as:
" If you don't find this file in .git remove it since I'm not using it".

The documentation is pretty unclear on that regard. So sorry :(

Making a JSON (ajax or whatever method you want to use) is just a fancy programming way to say: "ask for some data to a server."
Usually that server is possible to be reached by a url (like a website.) after some security checks (like having an authorized "id" -> called API key)

In the FCC examples $.getJSON("/json/cats.json", function(json) the function is calling for some data from a file called cat.json located inside a folder called json.
You will learn to do this tricks once (and if) you'll go on the back-end section and you will program your own server.
For the time being imagine that call as a "asking to my own server to give me the data saved in those file".

As a matter of fact there's no difference besides styling that the thing you did in your "local" JSON: you saved some data on your file, and then called it locally.

That's why your exteral call on't work... simply bcause there's no json/cat.json file /folder in your codepen file.
does it make sense @lukede ?

Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Oct 07 2016 04:15

@lukede yep! Find a service that will give you some quotes when asked and you are good to go.
(forismatic is a popular choice).

Just to give you a quick example a JSON call to an external server will look more like:

api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?q=London

Where you see an url, a request (data) and a query parameter (q=London)

Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Oct 07 2016 04:17
In this case you should see a response, since once visited the link you see some bunch of data @lukede .
Probably something was broken in your function request

Well @r1chard5mith that's not entirely true.
Codepen has a console + your browser has a powerfoul one. Learn to use them both @lukede .

The reason why FCC don't "teach" people to set up their own dev enviroment is that is first of all consuming, second not everyone can have access to it.
Plus codepen has tons of things going into the background for you.

How can a newb react to setting their own locaclhost, view engine and libraries all together?

Hey everyone I am trying to complete the "Change the Font size of an element" and in the note says: Due to browser implementation differences, you may need to be at 100% zoom to pass the tests on this challenge.

I have tried everything... but, I still have problems. Can anyone please help?

@joyinthenow you've added animated bounce in your HTML as well, which is wrong
and the syntax for your function in script tags is slightly off
Ashish Acharya
@anarchyrucks
Oct 07 2016 05:04
@joyinthenow reset your code and add $("button").addClass("animated bounce"); inside your script

@joyinthenow you don't need to add animated bounce inside html because you are already using jQuery to animate it

what will happen if i put only one single class?
@kpbro if you want to specify the width of your element for different screen sizes then you have to use multiple classes col-lg- for large, col-md- for medium,, etc

Thank you both! I see where I was confusing myself and making it more complicated than it was. Thank you for the clarification about jQuers and HTML code too!

Honestly, I'm just building the app and looking things up as I need. Of course, the first thing I need to do in the app is the one thing Angular can't handle because JS doesn't have pointers so trying to find a work around.

I never found it so was wondering if you've heard of it. He claimed that someone who can program syntax well works with someone who understands programming concepts and implementation work together.
One does all of the upper level think and dictates how everything should be while the other puts the concepts and logic into code. I made an app with him. You can guess which one I was. ;)

@DarrenfJ I know, right! And today, I was supposed to sit down and experience the awesomeness of Angular. However, much to my colleges dismay, Angular couldn't actually do what I needed to be done.
@JordanPPowell Night!
I needed to be able to use a pointer in order to do it with Angular and since those don't exist on the client side, kinda screwed.
