hey there :) I'm new at FCC and still very much a beginner in the beautiful world of coding :) was wondering, can anyone tell me how to set a pic as background on a div element without applying it to the body? for some reason what I'm trying to do only works if I apply it on the body element but then I think I got some bugs in the page appearing because of that... am a bit confused and tired to ask google (been working for like 10h straight and asked loads of stuff to google already...heheh) A bit of real human help would b super appreciated :smile:

in javascript, why do i define objects as

var object {
"quotes" : "yes",
"thing" : "stuff
}

but a lookup table has no quotes for property declaration, like:

var lookup {
quotes: "no",
thing: "also stuff"
}

@asparism think of the lookup table as keys and values
key has a value
in compsci we use quotes to donate strings
if we make something a string it means we want to get a key value of a certain type
rather than an object

@LiamDotPro if using quotes for strings, and strings mean we want to get a key value, and lookup tables are keys and values, wouldn't we use quotes for lookup tables?
is that the only difference in declaring a lookup table vs. an object?
Liam Read
@LiamDotPro
Oct 16 2016 00:35 UTC
They operate in different ways essentially
normally in an object you have a list of properties that can hold further objects
and the name is a reference to where that object is in memory
whereas a lookup table is more static and the keys are normally primitive values, this line is a little blury in javascript as it looks as if it operates outside of forced types
My best attempt at a simplistic comparison.
Ian Lee
@asparism
Oct 16 2016 00:38 UTC
so objects have properties such as color: green, whereas a lookup T is more like an a collection of variables?

am stuck here need help, how do i give the body element the color property green and how do h1 element should inherit the color green from body element. Remember, you can style your body element just like any other HTML element, and all your other elements will inherit your body element's styles.

First, create a h1 element with the text Hello World

Then, let's give all elements on your page the color of green by adding color: green; to your body element's style declaration.

Finally, give your body element the font-family of Monospace by adding font-family: Monospace; to your body element's style declaration.

<style>
body {
background-color: green;
font-family: Monospace;
}

</style>

1-Your div element should have the class container-fluid.
2-Make sure your div element has a closing tag.
3-Make sure you have nested all HTML elements in .container-fluid.

How do you get those 'animated bounce, shake, hinge' to work in Codepen? As a test I have tried copying the whole code from one of the exercises, pasted what is between the <script> tags into the JS window and everything else into the HTML window. I imported Bootstrap and jQuery. But the preview page in CodePen doesnt show the animation. Am I doing something wrong?

So, directions are saying: In style.css, specify Playfair Display as the font family for the main heading, followed by serif as the fallback font. My code is:

color: #FFF;
font-family: "Playfair Display", serif;
font-size: 32px;

Give your form element the id of cat-photo-form.
Your form element should have the background-color of green.
Make sure your form element has an id attribute.
Do not give your form any class or style attributes.
I purely know style class
these are the direction by the way
Miguel Matos
@mamptecnocrata

one thing that I can think of is to make the styles online, but only if and only if it is imperatively necessary that element will have that style; otherwise it is not recommended

@juleshughan - I think that it is because they really aren't teaching a full-blown CSS course. Bootstrap gives you a lot of functionality through their implementation of classes. Maybe it's easier for some people to get going that way? No substitute for really understanding the CSS code behind it, of course...
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 16 2016 03:39 UTC
@juleshughan just does alot of the work for you in organizing the page
you would have to write alot more css to get it working, here you just have to add a few classes
design isn't something they really teach in FCC, so this helps them speed up the HTML/CSS part I think so you can get to JS faster
plus its good for prototyping

Oct 16 2016 04:24 UTC
@arrizona79 since you called the .container-fluid in your css, you just need to add a div with a container-fluid div
@arrizona79 like this: <div class="container-fluid"></div>
abe
@arrizona79
Oct 16 2016 04:25 UTC
<div class="container-fluid"></div>
Jeramae Bohol
@jeramaedybohol
Oct 16 2016 04:25 UTC
@arrizona79 then nest all your existing codes inside that div, except the <style></style>

Oct 16 2016 04:26 UTC
@arrizona79 this is what you call a wrapper or a container, meaning, you should wrap all your html elements inside of it, except of course <style></style> since it's a CSS
@arrizona79 so your final code should look like this:
<style>
 ...
</style>
<div class="container-fluid">
 ...
</div>
abe

Only add one class with each of your three selectors.
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button");
$(".btn");
$("#target1").addClass("animated shake btn-primary");
});

@shualam the instruction say to add one class to EACH of your 3 selectors, and your code shows that you only add to 1 selector
@shualam your code should look like this:
$(document).ready(function() {
    $("button").addClass("");
    $(".btn").addClass("");
    $("#target1").addClass("");
  });

Well, never mind. The internal Quote (for JSON) somehow works here, but not on the codepen page
or when I set up a separate html/CSS/JS files
I don't get why it would work when I put it here, but not on the codepen page
alright, never mind. I found the problem, finally!
Separate question though:
What links do I need to add to make this script run on a html/css/js file setup?

   $("#" + cSeq[i]).css("background-color", "white");
       setTimeout (function(){
          $("#" + cSeq[i]).css("background-color","");},05);
Why is this not reverting to its original color ?
It works on my .panel code but not when its the CPU inputting the clicks?
I tried the timeout with 05 miliseconds in case it was a cpu speed thing and I tried to console.log cSeq[i] to make sure it was reverting to he correc value and it consolelogs the correct ID

hi guys needs help

In style.css, specify Roboto as the font family for the subheading and the paragraph, followed by sans-serif as the fallback font

Notice how the fonts changed!

Chris Cullen
@123xylem

so it could be that cSeq[i] changes in the short time between the css change

they just do a bit @juleshughan there's more things you can do w/ it too but they don't go into every single thing.
Think they just give enough so that you can figure out the rest on your own with some more practice

@crosscross2000 the syntax is <a href=""></a>
Cross Tutubalin
@crosscross2000

but to make a dead link is what im confused i tried <a href="#" "link">cat photos</a>
Jeramae Bohol
@jeramaedybohol
Oct 16 2016 06:15 UTC
@crosscross2000 because that syntax is wrong
@crosscross2000 you just have to replace the value inside ""
"#" is a dead link, www.google.com is an actual link
Cross Tutubalin
@crosscross2000
Oct 16 2016 06:16 UTC

@xnxiaolian although in real world project, that space will not give you error since it's not part of the syntax, but in these exercises, you will get an error if you don't follow what the instruction says, like spaces
@xnxiaolian so if the instruction says "cat photos", you should really have a space

@juleshughan the important thing is, you know how to use google as your friend

Julia Hughan
@juleshughan
Oct 16 2016 07:34 UTC
understood
also hard when i'm a ux designer
it's really hard not to obsess over details and small things
Jeramae Bohol
@jeramaedybohol
Oct 16 2016 07:35 UTC
@juleshughan the good thing about you is, you have advantage over other programmers because you already have a UX Design skills
Julia Hughan

Oct 16 2016 07:36 UTC
and the frustration of getting annoyed at the padding around the buttons of the css course project
Jeramae Bohol

Julia Hughan
@juleshughan
Oct 16 2016 07:37 UTC
advantage is design, disadvantage is wanting to get everything done perfectly
Jeramae Bohol
@jeramaedybohol
Oct 16 2016 07:38 UTC
@zeandave you did not correctly close your h3 tag
@zeandave your code should look something like this:
<div class="container-fluid">

</div>
Julia Hughan
@juleshughan
Oct 16 2016 07:38 UTC
learning has to be fast and perfect
Jeramae Bohol
@jeramaedybohol
Oct 16 2016 07:40 UTC
and when you feel like you just want to pass the exercises and not to really absorb the lessons, then it's a sign that you need to stop or quit for the day
because lessons are designed to be prerequisites for future lessons
or I say exercises
zeandave
@zeandave
Oct 16 2016 07:41 UTC

Jeramae Bohol

Jeramae Bohol
