why is this filling newArr with the same subarray twice? the original array is [a, b, c, d] and size is 2, so i'm looking for [ [a, b,] [c, d] ] but i'm only getting [ [c, d] [c, d] ].

while (arr.length > 0) { // while still elements

    for (var i = 0; i < size; i++) { // the number of slots in the box
      tempArr[i] = arr[0];
      arr.shift();
    }
    newArr.push(tempArr);

  } // end while

i thought it would refill tempArr every time but newArr would keep getting fresh additions because it's outside the for

I need help please with the code below Font Awesome is a convenient library of icons. These icons are vector graphics, stored in the .svg file format. These icons are treated just like fonts. You can specify their size using pixels, and they will assume the font size of their parent HTML elements.

You can add Font Awesome to any app just by including it by adding the following code to the top of your HTML:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="//maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.5.0/css/font-awesome.min.css"/>

In this case, we've already added it for you to this page behind the scenes.

The i element was originally used to make other elements italic, but is now commonly used for icons. You add the Font Awesome classes to the i element to turn it into an icon, for example:

<i class="fa fa-info-circle"></i>

Use Font Awesome to add a thumbs-up icon to your like button by giving it an i element with the classes fa and fa-thumbs-up. <link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

<style>

Your a element should have the anchor text of "cat photos".
You need an a element that links to http://freecatphotoapp.com
Make sure your a element has a closing tag.

I'm guessing this site is primarily for front end devs though... front end tutorials seems more in depth.

For this lesson "Target the same element with multiple jQuery Selectors". I've answered <script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass("animated");
$(".btn").addClass("shake");
$("#target1").addClass("btn-primary");
});

Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element. (It's still cross. What is still missing?

Your h2 element should use the font Lobster.
Your h2 element should degrade to the font Monospace when Lobster is not available.
Comment out your call to Google for the Lobster font by putting <!-- in front of it. Be sure to close your comment by adding -->.

Oct 17 2016 05:47

@hedongshu you see the example they give for formatting/syntax:

h1 {
  font-size: 30px;
}

"

@hedongshu they want you to add an additional p element in hte htnl part, with specific text.. (the "Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the...")

I don't know where to put it.
Darren

Oct 17 2016 05:48
@hedongshu and then create the CSS that 'affects' the p's using the syntax I just gave
@hedongshu put the CSS between the <style></style> tags
put the <p>Purr jump.... at the bottom below the existing/given <p>
make it p instead of h1 and change it to 16

Guys, am I missing something? I put

<style>
body {
background-color: black;
font-family: Monospace;
color: green;
}

orange-text {

color: orange;

}
.pink-text {
color: pink !important ;
}
.blue-text {
color: blue;
}
</style>

<h1 id="orange-text" class="pink-text blue-text" style="color: white">Hello World!</h1>

Its still saying I'm missing the keyword
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Oct 17 2016 06:18
@TiffChamp dot at the front of orange
to make it a class in CSS
oh wait is it an ID?
then it's a #
@TiffChamp you have it as an id in the h1 html.. if that's what the exercise calls for.. id's in css have the same name but with a # before the name
@dsillydude ok took another look.. you also have it as .silver.background.. it should be .silver-background (dash not dot in the middle).. and you need class="silver-background" inside the <div>

Your h1 element should have the class pink-text.
Your h1 element should have the class blue-text.
Your h1 element should have the id of orange-text.
Your h1 element should have the inline style of color: white.
Your pink-text class declaration should have the !important keyword to override all other declarations.
Your h1 element should be pink.

@Monicalada What exactly you don't grasp?
As a general practice is good to write down in human language step by step what you'd like to do :)

@Monicalada The request is:

To get started, we should nest all of our HTML in a div element with the class container-fluid

Nesting simply means "placing inside.
An example of a p nested inside a contianer fluid

<div class="container-fluid">
  <p>Some text</p>  // this text is nested inside a container-fluid div

so put the starting div after </style> tag
i saw your link from above
the link tag is fine, the closing div is fine, just need to put opening div later in the code. you don't want your css (style) or your link tags nested between the divs
Monicalada
@Monicalada
Oct 17 2016 07:49
I understand they want me to place "<link rel="stylesheet" href="//maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.1/css/bootstrap.min.css"/>" somewhere but I just don't understand the placements of things

@Monicalada simply add
<div class="container-fluid"> before your <h2> and a closing </div> at the end of your document
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 07:50
so on normal webpages with the html/head/body tags this is where stuff would go:
<html>
<head>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="//maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.1/css/bootstrap.min.css"/>
<style>
/* your styles */
</style>
</head>
<body>
/* your body code, ie things you can see */
</body>
</html>
but they omit the html/head/body tags so it would be like this:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="//maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.1/css/bootstrap.min.css"/>
<style>
/* your styles */
</style>
/* your body code, ie things you can see */

body code would be like everything else besides style and links
h2 tags, p tags, divs, etc
you need to nest your button section with a div with class row @rawvishwaaaa

does anyone know why my "submit" does not appear with this code? <button type="submit" text="Submit"></button>
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 07:53
and each button needs to be nested between a div with class col-xs-4. so you should have a row with 3 nested divs, each div nesting a button
remove the text attribute, put Submit between the button tags @nearestnguyen
whatever is between the button tags what text will show inside the button, don't believe there is a text attribute for button

each div should only have one class
and there is no row-xs-4 class, its col-xs-4, thats for your columns
you should have a total of 4 divs
one row, 3 columns

no html tags should be between <style>, thats strictly just css
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Oct 17 2016 08:07
@Monicalada you have added wrong portion of code inside <style> tags.
I suggest you to reset the page (there's a button) and start with a fresh look
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:08
yeah i would reset it too just to clear it up
Monicalada
@Monicalada
Oct 17 2016 08:08
just reset
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:08
but all you need to do is put the link tag at the very top, put your <div> tag after </style> and ending div at very end
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Oct 17 2016 08:09

@Monicalada so breack it down a bit:
Inside the <style> tags goes a language called CSS, which its purpose is to tell html elements how to behave.

eg: colors, position...

Then below it, inside the <body> tags goes the HTML, a "language" that tell a browser what element to display and create.

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:10
yeah but the challenges don't include html/body/head tags @Marmiz, thats where i think its a little bit confusing
oh actually @Marmiz @Monicalada, you don't need the link tag
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Oct 17 2016 08:10
@Monicalada so assume that the HTML goes below the <style> tags.
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:10
normally you would if you were doing your own project
but they've "included it for you" in the background:
You can add Bootstrap to any app by adding the following code to the top of your HTML:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="//maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.1/css/bootstrap.min.css"/>

In this case, we've already added it for you to this page behind the scenes.
so all you need to do is add the div tags
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Oct 17 2016 08:12

@coymeetsworld I fer that @Monicalada haven't really figured out what a div is and where its should be placed....

After my explanation is it a bit more clear the difference between CSS styles and HTML elements?

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:12
yes if we were explaining how to do actual html outside of FCC @Marmiz
but there are no html/head/body tags, they don't introduce them. My guess, it's to keep the code simpler when doing the tutorial

Coy Sanders

@Monicalada this is what you had a while back, just to make it simple probably just use this:

<div class="container-fluid">
<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<style>
  .red-text {
    color: red;
  }

  h2 {
    font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
  }

  p {
    font-size: 16px;
    font-family: Monospace;
  }

  .thick-green-border {
    border-color: green;
    border-width: 10px;
    border-style: solid;
    border-radius: 50%;
  }

  .smaller-image {
    width: 100px;
  }

</style>
<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>Click here for <a href="#">cat photos</a>.</p>

<a href="#"><img class="smaller-image thick-green-border" src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat"></a>

<p>Things cats love:</p>
<ul>
  <li>cat nip</li>
  <li>laser pointers</li>
  <li>lasagna</li>
</ul>
<p>Top 3 things cats hate:</p>
<ol>
  <li>flea treatment</li>
  <li>thunder</li>
  <li>other cats</li>
</ol>
<form action="/submit-cat-photo">
  <label><input type="radio" name="indoor-outdoor"> Indoor</label>
  <label><input type="radio" name="indoor-outdoor"> Outdoor</label>
  <label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Loving</label>
  <label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Lazy</label>
  <label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Crazy</label>
  <input type="text" placeholder="cat photo URL" required>
  <button type="submit">Submit</button>
</form>
</div>

Just do 2 things: remove the link tag, put the opening div after the style tags

its fine, there is a lot to this especially if you haven't seen it before

@coymeetsworld i want to set a image background to my tribute page how can i do that ????
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:31
tried other things like Odin Project and Code Academy, think this is better
@rinpasahil333 you can use CSS, look at the background property
you can specify a url there for the image
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:34
may want to be careful with those types of backgrounds @rinpasahil333, will be hard to read text on something like that

nice! I also tried Code Academy before trying FCC. No comment of course because I knew nothing coming in. I'm working on an education startup, any advice on how I could leverage this to be able to start building things? @coymeetsworld
Coy Sanders

Oct 17 2016 08:35
try googling for some images @rinpasahil333, basically you want a background that contrasts with your foreground content
so that its easy to read
nothing wrong with using solid colors either
what kind of things are you looking to build @Monicalada ?

you can specify other properties in css for the image, have it repeat, not repeat, repeat only going down x, down y, cover entire page (i.e. stretch), etc
ah I see @Monicalada, well Bootstrap is a nice place to start
Monicalada
@Monicalada
Oct 17 2016 08:40
your opinion on grad school (MBA)versus going through this coding program?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:40
but it's not really used in production-level projects, more like prototyping
but has alot of things available to you like buttons, navbars, etc
those are 2 pretty different things, really depends on what you want to do going forward
This coding program is free though, so the only thing you are really spending is time and effort if you can afford that
MBA is more involved, plus you have to apply and pay and you're going to have to stick with that for a while so you have to be more sure you want to do something like that
where as here you can try this for a few weeks and see whether or not if coding may be something you want to do
if not, then at least you know and you can pursue MBA or whatever else you want knowing that
Monicalada
@Monicalada
Oct 17 2016 08:43
but if anyone plans to be in the startup world, coding is necessary nowadays, isn't it?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:43
not to say this program is a definite test to determine whether or not you should be a developer or coder or whatever lol, but it gives you an idea of what web dev is like
I wouldn't know, I work for a larger company lol
all I know about the startup world is just things I read and Silicon Valley lol
I would say necessary is probably a no though
Monicalada
@Monicalada
Oct 17 2016 08:44

Oct 17 2016 08:44
coding isn't the only skill you need to run a startup
I like how things like this and Obama are trying to push to expand knowledge of coding and opportunities
Monicalada
@Monicalada
Oct 17 2016 08:44
true but to at least have the basic coding down is part of a good start
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Oct 17 2016 08:45
but I don't think EVERYONE needs to learn how to code
its like saying everyone should know how to change their tires or cook.

Oct 17 2016 08:47
yeah a knowledge in coding can help you understand what is possible and what isn't
also an idea of how long something will take or if its even worth doing
@ArturGIni96 you're applying button classes to list items
don't think that will work the way you expect

body {
background-color: black;
font-family: Monospace;
color: green;
}
.pink-text {
color: pink;
}
.blue-text {
color: blue;

#orange-text {

color: orange;
}
}
</style>

<h1 id="orange-text"class="pink-text blue-text">Hello World!</h1>

And it says "Your h1 element should be orange."
How could h1 be orange?

@Monicalada there shouldn't be href, thats for anchor tags not img tags
Your new image should have a src of https://bit.ly/fcc-running-cats.

its just that you can ask camperbot for information and it would just come up in the chatroom

@coymeetsworld lots of camperbot fuctionality has been deprecated due to spam.
All the article can still be found in the main forum..
I think that the only functionality (besides brownies) is the formatting.
