with anchor tags @tecald
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:03
@brisourceful the first wont work because it will bump the left and top side of the inner div to the 50% portion. which would push it into the bottom right corner. so the top left corner would be in the middle.

did you figure out that css question btw? on block/inline elements
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:04
your CSS code has issues, you didn't create a selector for your style
Brianna
@brisourceful
Feb 27 2017 00:04
@XXiphias yeah I figured out it was B since the absolute positioning throws it off.
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:04

Feb 27 2017 00:04
@XXiphias and yes regarding the CSS question, all HTML elements can be changed from inline to block and vice-versa

I see the way it's formatted, but I put h1 before I set the font and it didn't change anything. I don't know how to set it to the p class. @coymeetsworld
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:05
you put the p where the h1 is @taskmaster120, syntax is the same
Edmundo Ruiz
@taskmaster120
Feb 27 2017 00:06
Just p or with the arrows?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld

Ok that worked, I wonder why it didn't explain that, what is the h1?
Coy Sanders

Feb 27 2017 00:07
What is a selector exactly?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:07
in CSS, that means all h1 elements will get the styles you specify in the brackets

Feb 27 2017 00:09
btw @coymeetsworld . If you have something positioned absolute within something relative. The absolute position is relative to that outer div that is relative, not the whole document. confusing as that sounds :P it's a good way to align something to the side of an outer div. set the inner one to absolute with bottom: 0 for example and the outer to relative. forces it to the bottom of the outer div.
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:09
yeah I see that
I don't really mess with absolute positioning unless i want to anchor something on a page

I cant seem to figure out why my geo location wont show up on code pen.....whats odd is that when I just posted on here it seems to work on the embedded link but when you go to my link in a new tab it wont work anymore.....this is driving me crazy

detour26
@detour26
Feb 27 2017 00:18
yeah
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:18
you need to use https
try this
chrome only allows geolocation on a secured connection
which also means you wont be able to use openweathers api directly as you have to pay to get https use and codepen doesnt allow the http api over https.

@alexnowak06 you have button id in your jquery selector. you dont need the id bit
alexnowak06
@alexnowak06
Feb 27 2017 00:21
am i completely off?
still wrong with just button
Coy Sanders

but yeah the selector is wrong
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:22
i imagine you want to target target4? if so it's the same way you did the css on target1
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:22
its going to look similar to your first selector $("#target1")
also the html content needs one extra thing

Feb 27 2017 00:34
what if you add a button and in inline javascript output an alert? maybe vs code is blocking the alerts?
ok that's local weather cut/paste
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:35
it's working there...
so must be something related to VS code
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:35
yeah it works for me
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:36
hmmm, doesn't pop an alert there for me either
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:36
you can't just open up the index.html file locally and expect it to work either I don't think
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:36
something with Chrome?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:36
you need to actually be serving it with like apache I found
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:36
could be related to your ip then. maybe it doesnt return anything for your ip?
Bahnzo

doesn't work in firefox either
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias

well if me and Coy both get a popup, id suspect it's system related then. although I have no idea what would stop that from working..

Feb 27 2017 00:37
How do i use the html 5 tag header
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:37
the code itself is fine though.
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:37
yeah, it has to be something here, but I've gotten alert popups working fine before
so that stumps me
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:38
you need to serve the page most likely
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:38
maybe add a span and have it output the text to the span and see if that populates?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:38
can't just open up the html file on your computer and expect it to work
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:38
then you can see if its a loading issue or alert issue
oh. I guess I made an assumption. You dont get a popup when opening it in codepen, correct @Bahnzo ?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:39
hmm guess im wrong about opening locally, ive had that problem before but my projects i can open just fine w/ api calls
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:39
not in codepen either
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:40
ya.. has to be system then.
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:40
but I've never had problem with alerts before
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:40
try console.log
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:40
in fact this same code I was opening an alert for something else and it popup fine
function showPosition(position) {
lat = position.coords.latitude;
long = position.coords.longitude;
// alert("Latitude: " + lat + "\n" + "Longitude: " + long);
}
worked just fine
alert wasn't commented of course
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:41
how do you know it worked fine?
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:41
ya.. a console.log seems like a good idea
Bahnzo

Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:41
@Carson2003 Do you mean the <header></header> tag?
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:41
wasn't jQuery tho
Carson Michael
@Carson2003
Feb 27 2017 00:42
yes
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:42
just straight JS so maybe something with jQuery isn't loading properly?
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:42
the header tag doesnt really do much. Just treat it like a div.
Carson Michael
@Carson2003
Feb 27 2017 00:42
ok
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:43
@Bahnzo maybe add something like <span id="test"></span> and in your document ready add $("#test").text('test'); to see if it works?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 00:43
http://getbootstrap.com/css/#grid @ZackRich12 no video necessary, its pretty simple concept
rows contain columns, and column sizes in a row should add to 12
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:45
@XXiphias I did this:
$("h1").text(country);
and it doesn't change the h1 property
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:46
what if you put that outside of the json call and put in some static text?
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo
Feb 27 2017 00:47
@XXiphias ok outside of the call it does change it
so it's the call of course
heh....i'm bamboozled
Chris Jantzen
@XXiphias
Feb 27 2017 00:48
and if you go to http://freegeoip.net/json/ it all looks proper?
Bahnzo
@Bahnzo

wehn you are going to the codepen, is it redirecting you to an https version of it?
or is it non ssl?
maybe try changing the address to https://freegeoip.net/json/ regardless and see if it works

@king-peters the p in the code is what ties it to the p element. just put the code in your style section
p targets all paragraphs on the page
because paragraphs are p elements
@phuzisham usually you'd put a name or description in alt, not a url
try something like alt="relaxing cat"

hello everyone, im beginning to do my build a tribute page project, but to be honest idk how to start it. so my question is where or how do i start it?
Eric Leung
@erictleung
Feb 27 2017 02:14

@taskmaster120 here are the instructions

Create a class called smaller-image and use it to resize the image so that it's only 100 pixels wide.

So the first thing you want to do is define a class called smaller-image in within your <style> tags.

@aotikz can you be more specific? How to start at what point? General advice for that challenge is to choose a framework, e.g. Bootstrap, and then sketch out what you need in the project page. Then you'll want to start building the site section by section.

I tried that, let me try again thank you.
Eric Leung
@erictleung
Feb 27 2017 02:16
@taskmaster120 if you've already defined the new class within your style tags, then you'll want to "apply" it to the img by adding it to its class attributes.
Where are the class attributes, sorry the vocab is new to me. In my first 24hrs.
Eric Leung
@erictleung
Feb 27 2017 02:21
@taskmaster120 you don't need a img in front of .smaller-font. The img will specify for all img tags, which you don't want to do.

@taskmaster120 to add classes to elements, look at a existing element

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

Its class is red-text. Adding a new class otherClass to this will make it look like

<h2 class="red-text otherClass">CatPhotoApp</h2>

Just add it within the quotes without spaces.

Edmundo Ruiz
@taskmaster120

Feb 27 2017 02:24

@taskmaster120 this is not valid HTML

<img smaller-font: {width 100px;}>

Look at the other HTML elements in the editor for examples on how to add classes.

@taskmaster120 you need to add classes to

Right now, it has no class. Look at the other lines of code to see how to add a class, which is class="someClassName".

The alt attribute is used by "screen reader" software so that a person who is listening to the content of a webpage (for instance, a person who is blind) can interact with this element.

Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Feb 27 2017 03:19
@Quelina is it embeded inside? If so the audio is either your browser/codepen blocking any sound, or the default youtube audio is muted and you have to toggle from the UI

Hey guys. I'm trying to signup for CodePen but keep getting a 404 error when it tries to load the signup page. I've tried the link from FreeCodeCamp, and by trying to save a Pen on the site but both showed 404 errors where the signup page should be. Can someone else try and access the signup page to see if it works for them?

wordBlanks("dog", "big", "ran", "quickly") should contain all of the passed in words separated by non-word characters (and any additional words in your madlib).
wordBlanks("cat", "little", "hit", "slowly") should contain all of the passed in words separated by non-word characters (and any additional words in your madlib).

function wordBlanks(myNoun, myAdjective, myVerb, myAdverb) {

Feb 27 2017 05:21
@coymeetsworld nope never sir
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 05:21
hmm ok well basically you're taking those 4 variables, myNoun/myAdj/myVerb/myAdverb and constructing a sentence with it
adding in some constant words in the mix
celmae
@celmae
Feb 27 2017 05:22
@coymeetsworld wait, each variable should have a sentence?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 27 2017 05:22
no, they're put into one sentence, all 4 variables
Like an example if I just had one variable noun I could do something like result = "I have a " + myNoun;
so if I passed dog it would say "I have a dog", or if I passed cat it would say "I have a cat"
May want to refer back to Concatenating Strings with the Plus Equals Operator challenge if you're unsure about how to construct Strings together

if (myObj.hasOwnProperty("checkProp"))
    return myObj[checkProp];
  else
    return "Not Found" ;
Hey guys need some help. I'm at Testing Objects for Properties.
And the code editor says it can only return "Not Found". Not sure whats the issue.

@abrar-kh with this:

hasOwnProperty("checkProp"))

You are checking if your object has a string that says: "checkProp"
Mind your syntax

@Life-of-an-atom for CSS / JS and in most of the languages like Java, C# etc we comment like
\\ we use double backslash for single line comment
\*
and we use backslash following with steric for the start of multi-line comment

@T-Vang no need to declare .containr-fluid in style. It comes from Bootstrap.
All you have to do is insert all your html inside a div with that class assigned:
<div class="container-fluid">
    nest
</div>
@chandeshpatwari why doubl?
@chandeshpatwari also no capital in CSS ==> border-style: solid

@T-Vang depends, if they require ALL the html inside, means the closing </div> should be the last

@Marmiz ok i got it. thanks. Is the form element is a html element? what about <style>? I had to put the closing div at the very end.
