Mar 07 2017 00:10
hello everyone, i'm having some trouble understanding how to nest in a form element. im sure its simple but i cant seem to find the problem, please if anyone could help
what i have is

<input type="text"placeholder="cat photo URL">

<form action="/submit-cat-photo" type="text"></form>

Gersho
@Gersho
Mar 07 2017 00:10
nesting is "putting one inside the other one"

and can anyone help me with my issue or no?

Mar 07 2017 00:21
@MacSwan which challenge is it?
Gersho
@Gersho
Mar 07 2017 00:21
@MacSwan when you nest elements, the one inside is the child, the one outside is the parent, just like parent folder on your filesystem

Gersho
@Gersho
Mar 07 2017 00:22
so like with <div><h1>blablabl</h1></div>
div is h1's parent
MacSwan
@MacSwan
Mar 07 2017 00:23
$("#target1").parent().css("background-color", "red");
I don’t understand why .parent() was needed
why wouldn’t $(“target1”).css(“background-color”, red”); work?
Gersho
@Gersho
Mar 07 2017 00:24
you want to aim at target1's parent, that means that depending on the setup, you might aim at multiple elements
MacSwan

Give the text input in your form the class form-control.
anyone know how to do that^^^
Gersho
@Gersho
Mar 07 2017 00:26
it's easy, you have an input elements somewhere right ? give it a class like you've done for your other elements previously
Alexander Køpke
@alexanderkopke
Mar 07 2017 00:26
ok so find the input that has type="text" as its attribute and give the class="form-control"

so you just add class="form-control" somewhere in your input

@chovan97 it's a class to make your images larger?
AndrewOscarDelta
@AndrewOscarDelta
Mar 07 2017 00:45
@chovan97 the style tags need to be at the top of the working document, and then in the image you need to set a class of class="larger-image"
Jose Eduardo Garcia Ramirez
@chovan97
Mar 07 2017 00:45
a class like i did here ? <p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>
AndrewOscarDelta
@AndrewOscarDelta
Mar 07 2017 00:46
Yes
like this <p class="red-text smaller-image">
Jose Eduardo Garcia Ramirez
@chovan97
Mar 07 2017 00:46
yes its a class @Hennieishoney
ok
i'll try that
AndrewOscarDelta
@AndrewOscarDelta
Mar 07 2017 00:47
then in style add a decoration of
.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
that'll solve it.

Create a Form Element
You can build web forms that actually submit data to a server using nothing more than pure HTML. You can do this by specifying an action on your form element.

For example:

<form action="/url-where-you-want-to-submit-form-data"></form>

Nest your text field in a form element. Add the action="/submit-cat-photo" attribute to this form element.

AndrewOscarDelta
@AndrewOscarDelta
Mar 07 2017 00:50
You need to nest the action which in an input tag, in the form tags
<form><imput sdfdsfesfsfgsff></form>
This is the answer <form action="/submit-cat-photo"><input type="text" placeholder="cat photo URL"></form>

The activity @JohnnyBizzel, that doesn't work is "Nest the existing img element within an a element." and is the first one, the next two activities "Your a element should be a dead link with a href attribute set to #." and "Make sure each of your a elements has a closing tag." are ok, but the thing is that is not working for the first activity. <p>

@affendismail11 if you are positive your code is correct but something is interfering with the page here's the usual fixes:
  • Reload the page and run the tests again. A script may have crashed, preventing the tests from running.
  • Try the challenge in incognito mode. A plugin might be interfering with the tests.
  • Try the challenge in a different browser. There may be an issue with your version of browser.

Hey all! I'm having a problem with the "Change the Font Size of an Element" lesson for html, I think. The one with that uses CSS selectors and stuff. I'm stupid new at this lol. Anyways it says I need to put the font size of my p tags to 16px and I'm fairly certain the code is correct but it won't let me continue.
jmarcano17
@jmarcano17
Mar 07 2017 01:46
I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong here.

Prioritize One Style Over Another
Sometimes your HTML elements will receive multiple styles that conflict with one another.

For example, your h1 element can't be both green and pink at the same time.

Let's see what happens when we create a class that makes text pink, then apply it to an element. Will our class override the body element's color: green; CSS property?

Create a CSS class called pink-text that gives an element the color pink.

Give your h1 element the class of pink-text.

This is what I have so far

<style>
body {
background-color: black;
font-family: Monospace;
color: green;
}
.pink-text {color:pink}
</style>

<h1 class="pink-text">Hello World!</h1>

body {

}

white-text {

color: white;

}
.pink-text {
color: pink;
}
.blue-text {
color: blue;
}
<h1 in-line-style="color:white;" </style>

<h1 id="orange-text" class="pink-text blue-text">Hello World!</h1>

how can i change the color of hello world to white with out changing the id ?

couple of things
you weren't supposed to remove the h2 HTML tags so those need to be put back
also the challenge says the h2 element should be blue, you're styling it to be red
youre not suppose to copy and paste the examples, those are just examples
the answer should look similar in most cases but its not exact

Note
You should only be targeting one element and adding only one class at a time. Altogether, your three individual selectors will end up adding the three classes shake, animated, and btn-primary to #target1.

Run tests (ctrl + enter)
Reset Help Bug
Use the $("button") selector.
Use the $(".btn") selector.
Use the $("#target1") selector.
Only add one class with each of your three selectors.
Your #target1 element should have the classes animated‚ shake and btn-primary.
Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element.

});
</script>
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld

you need multiple selectors, thats just one @jnewton0828
you also need to pass a String into addClass
check the instructions again

Mar 07 2017 02:51
ok.
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 07 2017 02:51
gives you the 3 jQuery selectors you need to use
and you give one class each
animated to the button selector, shake to the .btn selector, btn-primary to the #target1 selector
Jonathan Newton
@jnewton0828
Mar 07 2017 02:52
I was doing that to begin with and I got frustrated not figuring it out. let me show you what I have now
<script>

$(".btn").addClass(animated shake);
$("#target1").addClass(animated, shake, btn-primary);
});
</script>
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 07 2017 02:55
the selectors are ok, but what you're passing into addClass is not
they need to be strings, right now its looking for variables named animated and shake and they don't exist
also, you only want one class in each selector
Look at the instructions, carefully
"Add the shake class to all the buttons with class .btn."
Doesn't say add animated and shake class to all buttons with class .btn, just shake
Jonathan Newton
@jnewton0828
Mar 07 2017 02:56
so that should be $(".btn").addClass(shake);

Give your form's text input field a class of form-control. Give your form's submit button the classes btn btn-primary. Also give this button the Font Awesome icon of fa-paper-plane.
    <input class="form-control" placeholder="cat photo URL" required>

you should follow this hierarchy so the code's much cleaner:

then row again -> columns (for a new section)
indefinitely...

@errordetected

unless a column itself needs more sections within (which, seeing your portfolio, it doesn't)
right now you have something like container-->row--->column--->row etc.
but you need to start rows clean (new row tags should fall outside of previous row tags)
otherwise there will be a lot more padding then you want
resulting in stacking

Guys, quick tip:
Anyone knows a shorter syntax (ES6 or whatever) for this:

if(name == 'x' || name =='y' || name == 'y') return true

return (Object.is(name, "x") || Object.is(name, "y"));

Could anyone help me with the JS Switch challenge? I've read all the MDN doc and it seems to make sense enough, but my code isn't passing. I've tried swapping out quotes without luck.

function caseInSwitch(val) {
  var answer = "";
  // Only change code below this line
  switch (val) {
    case "1":
      console.log("alpha");
      break;
    case "2":
      console.log("beta");
      break;
    case "3":
      console.log("gamma");
      break;
    case "4":
      console.log("delta");
      break;

  }

  // Only change code above this line
  return answer;
}

// Change this value to test
caseInSwitch(1);

@IMDBLM all you're doing is printing into the console, without assigning nothing to answer
therefore asnwer is unchanged (var answer = "")

Claudio Restifo

@IMDBLM where exactly it tells to "leave the code be" (cos if so we can change it if it's confusing)
It's asking you to NOT change the initial var declaration and the return statement. But you want to do something in the switch since you want your answer to change.

@IMDBLM pretty much:
This:

switch (val) {
    case "1":
      console.log("alpha");
      break;

In human language would be:

You see the value? If it's 1 print into the console "alpha" and the stop looking at other options.

Use this logic to do what the exercise is asking you to do it (which is not printing "alpha" in the console ;) )
