Give a Background Color to a Div Element
Jean-Paul Sauve
@jp-sauve
Mar 23 2017 00:31
oh I see. To give a class to an element, put the class in the element's opening tag
you've put it after the tag's opening element.
just like <img src="" and <a href=""
<div>
class="silver-background"
<p>Things cats love:</p>
so you're doing fine. really, you only have one character out of place.
Coy Sanders

Just like we labeled our wells, we want to label our buttons.

Give each of your button elements text that corresponds to its id's selector.

Here is my code, what am I doing wrong:

<div class="container-fluid">
<h3 class="text-primary text-center">jQuery Playground</h3>
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-6">
<h4>#left-well</h4>
<div class="well" id="left-well">
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target1" text="#target1"></button>
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target2" text="#target2"></button>
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target3" text="#target3"></button>
</div>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-6">
<h4>#right-well</h4>
<div class="well" id="right-well">
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target4" text="#target4"></button>
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target5" text="#target5"></button>
<button class="btn btn-default target" id="target6" text="#target6"></button>

So what is that element called that I just added?
Gustavo Silva
@gsilvapt
Mar 23 2017 02:16
The element word is confusing you
The exercise was to simply add text to the buttons
Technically, the text in the buttons is called text element
HarrisonHelms
@HarrisonHelms
Mar 23 2017 02:16
Ohh I see. I think I have my terminology for a lot of these elements a little confused

Gustavo Silva
@gsilvapt
Mar 23 2017 02:17
Moreover, the exercise tells you to add the text element to the button that corresponds to its ids
Each button has a targetSomething ID so they wanted you to create the text element with the same ID and a hashtag
Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it
Bye now!

Anyone have some insight as to why this isn't working? It is inside a function so that a script can run a test on it.
function addCalculateDiscountPriceMethod(storeItem) {
  //add a method to the storeItem object called 'calculateDiscountPrice'
  //this method should multiply the storeItem's 'price' and 'discountPercentage' to get the discount
  //the method then subtracts the discount from the price and returns the discounted price
  //example:
  //price -> 20
  //discountPercentage -> .2
  //discountPrice = 20 - (20 * .2)
  storeItem.calculateDiscountPrice = function() {
    return this.price - (this.price*this.discountPercentage);
  };
  storeItem.calculateDiscountPrice();
}

<img src="http://www.greatblackheroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/mattbaker01.jpg">
Clarence Matthew Baker was born on December 10, 1921 in Forsyth County, North Carolina. The son of Clarence and Ethel baker, Matt and his brothers Robert and John, moved with their parents to Pittsburgh, PA. Somewhere around 1940 he graduated from high school and moved to Washington, DC where he found a job working for the government. While many of his contemporaries were being drafted into the military over next year, Baker was not eligible for military service as he was found to be suffering from a heart ailment, the result of a childhood bout with rheumatic fever. He moved to to New York City to study art at the Cooper Union School of Engineering, Art, and Design, a privately funded college located in the East Village. He had been an avid drawer and found inspiration from many of his artistic heroes such as magazine illustrator Andrew Loomis, and comic book artists Will Eisner, Reed Crandall, Alex Blum and Lou Fine. <br /> <br />
He began his art career in 1944 joining the S.M. Igor Studio as a background artist. The Igor Studio was a comics packager which produced ready-to-print feature material for comic book publishers. Igor recalled Baker coming in for a job interview. “[Baker] came to my studio in the early ’40s; handsome and nattily dressed, ‘looking for a job’, as he put it. His only sample was a color sketch of—naturally—a beautiful gal! On the strength of that and a nod from my associate editor Ruth Roche, he was hired as a background artist. … When given his first script, he showed originality and faithfully executed its story line. His drawing was superb. His women were gorgeous!” <br /> <br /> </p>

<a href="#"> this one
Austin Tice
@AustinTice
Mar 23 2017 06:15
thats a placeholder @lgw666
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Mar 23 2017 06:15
it says "Replace the value of your a element's href attribute with a #, also known as a hash symbol, to turn it into a dead link."
Doni Yafi
@yafiwebdev
Mar 23 2017 06:15
@lgw666 you use this as like a placeholder, until you get an actual url
GuowenLuo
@lgw666
Mar 23 2017 06:16
understood,thank u
Doni Yafi
@yafiwebdev
Mar 23 2017 06:16
coz when you have so many links but don't have all the urls, you just put this and add them later
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Mar 23 2017 06:16
it could just be that people don't know or get that an attribute is usually the thing's = ... and not the thing itself...
Doni Yafi
@yafiwebdev
Mar 23 2017 06:16
and focus on the design

Mar 23 2017 06:17
:D
Doni Yafi
@yafiwebdev
Mar 23 2017 06:17
@DarrenfJ yeah exactly, they think the property is the value
if you tell them change the href to be # , they change the actual href characters
:worried:
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Mar 23 2017 06:18
@lgw666 later you'll likely use the # to make links on the same page.. possibly for your portfolio fCC project... then you'll really see the usefulness of the hash
Doni Yafi
@yafiwebdev
Mar 23 2017 06:18
yep, also useful for local links
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Mar 23 2017 06:18
that's why i usually just say 'put the # inside the "...."
if you tell them change the href to be # , they change the actual href characters
Doni Yafi
@yafiwebdev
Mar 23 2017 06:19
if you have a nav bar with many items, but haven't created those pages yet, so nothing to link to
@DarrenfJ yeah that's better, they should learn the terminology though

my scrollspy is not updating and moving the Active class to different nav links as i scroll down and ive tried everything :( tried external and internal js links on codepen, tried putting it in <head>, tried puttin an explicit <body> with data attributes, or assigning the scrollspy attributes through document-ready jquery. Tried following simple scrollspy tutorials, out of ideas >.<
my pen https://codepen.io/kravhen/pen/aJEXxG
could BS4's scrollspy just be broken or the docs outdated
