@Wheatability great, you've helped a lot!
John Sumner
@sumnercommajohn
May 20 2017 00:01
@ChrisBertels I think you need to set the color using the .red-text class, but set the font size by targeting your <p> elements directly
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:02
ah, thats definitely what it's asking
add a separate rule for the p tag
and adjust the font-size inside that
debracheprop
@debracheprop

how do i put a grid system using div?
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:03
bootstrap grid classes are the easiest way

I'm closer but im not understanding what im doing wrong still
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:05
@KelvinGivens your css rules do not need quotation marks
instead the should be preceded by a .
Kelvin Givens III
@KelvinGivens
May 20 2017 00:05
also I learned how to style text without using classes, are classes used often by programmers it seems unnecessary compared to how I was previously taught?
John Sumner
@sumnercommajohn
May 20 2017 00:05
@KelvinGivens check the syntax of your css declarations against the syntax in the example
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:06
so
  .class-name {
       font-size: size;
  }
or color in your case
Chris Bertels
@ChrisBertels
May 20 2017 00:06
@sumnercommajohn @Wheatability That's what I thought, but the directions state, "The first p element should have the class red-text."

NESTING?
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:07
@ChrisBertels you dont need to touch the classes
this challenge wants you to select the p elements themselves
in css you can not only select by class and id, but you can select by the element itself like p
p {
    rules here
}
Benkavod
@Benkavod
May 20 2017 00:08
@oxvoid the p element should cover the entire code
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:08
and that would affect ALLL paragraph elements
Benkavod
@Benkavod
May 20 2017 00:08
@oxvoid ie <p><a></a></p>
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:08
so you should add a p selector in addition to the classes that are already there
Chris Bertels
@ChrisBertels
May 20 2017 00:09
@Wheatability Thanks so much! I didn't realize you could select the p elements themselves as you mentioned

@ChrisBertels that way, you can style the two <p> elements with different colors by targeting the first <p>'s class, but style them to have the same font-size by targeting both of them by their element type
yeah you got it, awesome

<div class="col-xs-4"><button class="btn btn-block btn-info">Info</button> </div>

Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:12
@ChrisBertels i set up a small jsfiddle to show the difference in selectors
the thing with classes is that they are reusable on ANY element
you can just stick your red-text class or whatnot on any element and it will be red
whereas selecting by tag type, you can target all of one type of element
glad you got it :)
John Sumner
@sumnercommajohn
May 20 2017 00:13
@debracheprop the <div class="row> element needs to be a container for the <div> elements that have any kind of column class, like <div class="col-xs-4">

@coymeetsworld you're referring to another lesson
i was on "Target a Specific Child of an Element Using jQuery"
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:27
@fdemaa okay here we go, you ready?
first: your header class should have a height of a static amount not a percentage
slavastarikov
@slavastarikov
May 20 2017 00:27
it only said "Make the second child in each of your well elements bounce. You must target the children of element with the target class."
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 00:27
@slavastarikov ok, but the instructions on that one provide an example on how to do that
fdemaa
@fdemaa
May 20 2017 00:27
you mean on px?
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:28
or em or rem or whatever units you're using
the second part, and most importantly
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 00:28
Here's how you would give the third element in each well the bounce class:

$(".target:nth-child(3)").addClass("animated bounce");
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:28
you did your header coloring in your h1 selector
you should set the background color inside your header class
not inside the h1 tag
the h1 only takes up as much height as it needs for the text
style the container not the text itself
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 00:28
and also says "Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element.", classes plural

@Wheatability i read to use %
on my box models
for something aboute relative measure
i think
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 00:30
you would use the 100% on the h1 and size the header
it takes on 100% of the parent element's height or width

you can't use red-text because 1. not all p elements have red-text class. 2. your h2 element has red-text class. Your h2 element will get resized also

@Wheatability !!! One last question man, i want to target a special <p> element inside my div class, i read that you have to put like this:

hit control + shift + c and it will open up the inspector click on the padding that you can't figure out
and then theres a little box with yellow green and orange, thats the element size, padding, and margin for the box model
so you can tell whether it is padding or margin causing it
fdemaa
@fdemaa

@kryssxx is the goal of the function just to check if it has a property?
i haven't done that one in a long time

Modify the function checkObj to test myObj for checkProp. If the property is found, return that property's value. If not, return "Not Found". @Wheatability
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 01:22

Tyler Purvines

ooooo heres a question for the more experienced people: is there a more efficient way to check if a page is scrolled past its original position on scroll without running an event listener callback on EVERY scroll event?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 20 2017 01:29
if you're using bootstrap there's scrollspy, but I suspect it just sets an event listener like you're trying to avoid
Tyler Purvines

May 20 2017 01:29
yeah, i think that might be the only way
Kyle Holm

Alexander R Bott
@Abott1222

@Mr-Benjamin exactly. FCC will give you a superficial level of understanding but you need to do your due diligence making sure you get the complexity of say CSS
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 01:54
and thats setting all h1 elements a font-size of 30px
you want to set all p elements a font-size of 16px

Guys whats the container-fluid class for divs
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 01:56
it is a bootstrap class
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 01:56
it comes from bootstrap

@reddred
May 20 2017 01:56
so how will add h1 {
font-size: 30px;
}in that style element
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 01:56
for making full width fluid containers
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld

@reddred put it inside the style tags, try it on your own first

fluid container?
OH wow I read one sentence and understood it
before it got deleted
buddermancer
@buddermancer
May 20 2017 01:58
so in order to use the col-xs-6 things
you need it in a fluid container
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 01:58
i just posted the link instead of copypasta
buddermancer
@buddermancer
May 20 2017 01:59

Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 01:59
grids are housed in containers yes
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 01:59
yes @buddermancer, except you need rows also
good place to learn something is through the documentation: http://getbootstrap.com/css/#grid
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 01:59
container is padded whereas container-fluid takes up the full width of the viewport
buddermancer
@buddermancer
May 20 2017 01:59
oh
I always wondered what the row was also
so you need rows to use the column grid
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 02:00
yes
buddermancer
@buddermancer
May 20 2017 02:00
alright
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 02:00
each row has 12 usable columns
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 02:00
yes, rows and columns are exactly how you think they would look
rows go up and down, columns left and right
Tyler Purvines
@Wheatability
May 20 2017 02:00
and you can have columns take up as many of those 12 units as you want
buddermancer
@buddermancer
May 20 2017 02:01
that's not right coy
columns go up and down
rows go left and right
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 02:01
no i had it right
if you add another row, where does it go?
buddermancer
@buddermancer
May 20 2017 02:01
So it just contradicts everything I've learned before about rows and columns
it goes under the other row
oh
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 02:02
yes, so rows get added up and down
columns are side-by-side
buddermancer
@buddermancer
May 20 2017 02:02
I thought you meant the materials in the row are up and down
or smoething like that
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 20 2017 02:02
now if you want to read the data, then you're right
columns are read up to down, and rows are read left to right

@Manish-Giri Now the div error is clear but now says I'm missing "class-row" <div class="row"><div class="col-xs-7"><input type="text" class="form-control" placeholder="cat photo URL" required></div></div>
<div class="col-xs-5"><button type="submit" class="btn btn-primary"><i class="fa fa-paper-plane"></i> Submit</button></div>

and like @Manish-Giri said, use bootstrap 3
just like your bootstrap.css, 3.3.7

@ftb1330 without 2-text here
you can do it like p{...} since p is an element
p2-text {
font-size: 16px;
}

May 20 2017 04:54

First, create a h1 element with the text Hello World

Then, let's give all elements on your page the color of green by adding color: green; to your body element's style declaration.

Finally, give your body element the font-family of Monospace by adding font-family: Monospace; to your body element's style declaration.

<style>
body {
background-color: green;
font-family:Monoscape;

}

</style>
