Your div element should have the class container-fluid.
Make sure your div element has a closing tag.
Make sure you have nested all HTML elements in .container-fluid

@arielio1402 @mattifus usually it tells you exactly what to do, if it says add the word "checked" that is literally all you need to do. So if you've deleted stuff and re wrote stuff, moved it about etc. you may have put something wrong, and then even if you should put "checked" in the right place, is something else has been changed wrongly, it won't work. So sometimes, best to reset and start again if you didn't get it right. That way you can know everything is back in its proper place.

how is obj[b]; equal to “Hello World"
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
May 28 2017 02:29
@IbrahimButt because of this var b = "a";
variable b's value is a
so obj[b] is actually obj["a"] or obj.a
Ibrahim
@IbrahimButt
May 28 2017 02:30
@Manish-Giri but doesnt that make a variable called b with the string value of “a”?

Hey everyone. I have a question. I'm on the first challenge where you make a Tribute page. I am looking that the source from the example given (https://codepen.io/FreeCodeCamp/full/NNvBQW/) and don't understand all of the bootstrap columns in this line (<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1 col-md-8 col-md-offset-2">)
Is that line just creating a bunch of columns for the page underneath the photo and caption?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 02:32
@amandolia the bootstrap column sizes refer to screen sizes, so xs = mobile sm = tablet etc
it only creates a single column, but changes the size depending on the device it's being viewed on
Drew Amandolia
@amandolia
May 28 2017 02:33
@thekholm80 Ahh ok. So the person who wrote that put all of those in there to cover their bases with what screen size their user is looking on
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 02:34
right. the col-xs-12 means it will fill up the full width and col-md-8 will fill up about 2/3 of the available width
max columns is 12
Ibrahim
@IbrahimButt
May 28 2017 02:34
Col-xs-12 will take up 12 collums on screens bigger than xs
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 02:35
on screens bigger than xs?
Ibrahim
@IbrahimButt
May 28 2017 02:35
xs and bigger sorry
not only bigger
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 02:36
it's the same as using css media queries, but requires writing a lot less code
Ibrahim
@IbrahimButt
May 28 2017 02:36
and col-md-8 will take 8 cols on screens of medium size and bigger
Drew Amandolia
@amandolia
May 28 2017 02:36

You need 2 p elements with Kitty Ipsum text.
Make sure each of your p elements has a closing tag.
Your p element should contain the first few words of the provided additional kitty ipsum text.
The first p element should have the class red-text.
Do not add a class attribute to the second p element.
Between the style tags, give the p elements font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.

@yelhsa i was mostly right, jQuery methods can be chained if they return a jQuery object. some methods will return other data types (integers, values, etc) and can't be chained
I can't find a full list though
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 04:40
Why do some elements in $() in JQuery use quotes and some don't. ex: $("h2") / $(document)
Sandip Shrestha
@saninmersion
May 28 2017 04:41
@taiJones00 html elements can be selected using just their names. like $("h2"). to select a class you need . like $(".classname") to select id you need # like $("#idname"). Also you should know what are html elements, these are predefined elements in html.
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 04:43
thank you but I noticed all three of those options (the type, class, and ID) all have quotes surrounding them. Document does not ex. $(document)
Ashley Owens
@yelhsa
May 28 2017 04:43
Why doesn't the code just follow the chain regardless of what's returned @thekholm80
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:43
@yelhsa if something returns a number and the next thing in the chain is expecting an object, what would happen?
Sandip Shrestha
@saninmersion
May 28 2017 04:44
@taiJones00 thats because you are selecting the whole html document with $(document). So its different for the whole document, an element in the document, a class of the document and an element with specific id in the document
Ashley Owens
@yelhsa
May 28 2017 04:45
alright i see. @thekholm80 that makes sense
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 04:45
ohhhhhhh. Because the document doesn't really count as an element. one more question. Calling the body would still need quotes because that one is an element. ex $("body") @saninmersion
Ashley Owens
@yelhsa
May 28 2017 04:47
@thekholm80 so a good habit would be to avoid chaining until I understand return values a little better?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:47
holy crap i've learned way more about jquery today than I ever wanted to
Tai Jones
@taiJones00

Sandip Shrestha
@saninmersion
May 28 2017 04:48
@taiJones00 yes body is an element. and document does not count not because it's not an element but because it contains every other element. It's kind of like a page and you write in it.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:48
@yelhsa chained methods execute faster so it's good practice
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 04:49
Okay here's something else. Are there any other words that dont need quotes when being called
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:50
it looks like anything that's scoped as a javascript object doesn't need quotes
the example they gave is var someElement = document.getElementById('someId'); and $(someElement)
and calling dom elements from document by using the dot notation seems to not require quotes
pretty cool
Ashley Owens
@yelhsa
May 28 2017 04:52
ok so I understand that JQ objects don't need quotes, is that the same reason why some things in the functions also don't need quotes
like this: $("#target1").css("color", "red");
$("#target1").prop("disabled", true);
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:52
nope
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 04:52
Keywords from javascript = no quotes. Keywords from html = quotes
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:53
and strings get quotes, like "red"
Ashley Owens
@yelhsa
May 28 2017 04:53
ok
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 04:53
I would say true doesn't need quotes because it's a boolean and that's a feautre in javascript but not in html. Is that right?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:53
yep
Tai Jones
@taiJones00

lol trying to think of the other keywords
that's why the 'umm'
Ashley Owens
@yelhsa
May 28 2017 04:55
lol
so it would seem that using selectors to make changes to html code could bog down the whole thing. At what point should you just go change the code by yourself?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:56
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 04:56
actually. Aren't keywords only the words pre-made in the language. For example a class you made named .helloWorld wouldn't be a keyword because it wasn't pre-made for you
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:56
right
@yelhsa I would only use jQuery to change things as a result of user interaction
Ashley Owens
@yelhsa
May 28 2017 04:57
but after you make it doesn't it just become a keyword?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:57
for example, they click a button and the layout changes
Ashley Owens
@yelhsa
May 28 2017 04:58
ok so these challenges are just for illustrative purposes got it
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 04:58
I don't know where I heard this so I have no evidence for what i'm saying but if i'm remembering right then a keyword is something pre-made in the language for you. Like the .addClass function in bootstrap. That was something already made for you
Right?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 04:58
that's how I've understood it
Ashley Owens
@yelhsa
May 28 2017 04:59
ok i should probably start reading up on this stuff
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 05:00
Okay so to simplify and since we both agree i've concluded that this statement is correct: a keyword is a premade term in a programming or markup langugae <- a statement that could be revised
Good luck. Have no idea where I heard that from. Would for sure send a link to what i'm talking about if I knew where to look
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 05:01
i see keywords referred to as "reserved" as in can't be used for other things

Yes!
like ummm
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 28 2017 05:01
like i can't say var if = 0
because if is reserved
Tai Jones
@taiJones00
May 28 2017 05:02
yes that's right because if is a keyword already defined for the purposed of an if/if else function
