Hey Campers! I am trying to make the JS calculator. I am confused wether i should use prefix / postfix notation to evaluate the expression or just use a few variables and keep on performing the operations on the go?

@theredemu Between the style tags, give the p elements font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.
theredemu
@theredemu
Jun 03 2017 00:23
@itachi1995 font-size can't float off by itself. It needs to be within something like how color was for h2 in your previous lesson
Margaret
@Margaret2
Jun 03 2017 00:23
@itachi1995 you need to make a new set of CSS brackets for p elements. You can't just randomly stick the font-size info in there

@moddedlife you mean with the colored parts or just the link?
Margaret
@Margaret2
Jun 03 2017 00:30
@itachi1995 you need to set the font size of p elements, not .font elements
theredemu
@theredemu
Jun 03 2017 00:30
@itachi1995 closer. .font means it would be a class and you'd have to call it like a class. This just wants the p element
MoDLiFe
@moddedlife
Jun 03 2017 00:30
the colored parts.. im trying to ask for help on bootstrap but i dont wanna jst post random code
Margaret
@Margaret2
Jun 03 2017 00:30
also the bracket needs to be on the same line as the selector, so p {
@moddedlife it's better not to copy-paste actual code from codepen, just give the link to your pen and people can go look at it
theredemu
@theredemu
Jun 03 2017 00:31
@moddedlife you put ` in front of and at end of code
@Margaret2 how come? is that just because it's generally better to see the whole code?
@Margaret2 or is there another reason?
Margaret
@Margaret2
Jun 03 2017 00:32
1) codepen projects often have WAY too much code to paste in a chat
2) often you really need to see the context, be able to check the console, the settings, etc.

Margaret
@Margaret2
Jun 03 2017 00:39
@moddedlife it's not too hard, just
  • you have a <button> and an <input>
  • <button> and <input> need to go in a row div
  • <button> needs to go in a col-xs-5 div
  • <input> needs to go in a col-xs-7 div
@Naveenbitw what, you mean the <img> element?
@Naveenbitw there is no way the computer is going to magically match up the words "smaller-image" with an <img> element. You have to add the class name to your image

so I did this <div class="row">

@AnnieFaucher For future reference when you start an angle bracket, it needs to be closed eventually once all the special stuff is added (class, id, etc) Most tags also have a closing tag </TITLE> although not all do. EX: <a href="#">text</a> vs <img src="#">

Ellyria
@Ellyria
Jun 03 2017 01:19
When you put a space between two selectors, @ravikishorethella, you're telling CSS that you want to target the second selector if it's inside of the first selector (so all elements in the .red-text class inside of h2 elements), which wasn't what you wanted.

If you use h2 .red-text as the selectors, that says, "Give me the element in the .red-text class if it's inside of an h2 element," which was why that didn't work. If you use h2.red-text as the selector (without a space), that says, "Give me the h2 element that is in the .red-text class" If you use just .red-text as the selector, that says, "Give me any element(s) in the .red-text class."

for (var j=0; j<contacts.lenth;j++) {

Do you see how you have all of this on one line, @dominics2: <script>$(document).ready(function() {});</script> ? It wants the script element on a line by itself, then everything up to and including the opening bracket of the document.ready function on a line by itself, then the closing brackets of the document.ready function on a line by themselves, and last, but not least, the closing script tag on a line by itself.

You're very close, @dominics2! Now you need to put the closing brackets on a line by themselves instead of being on the same line as the opening brackets of the document.ready function. Here's a good example of it in use: https://www.w3schools.com/jquery/tryit.asp?filename=tryjquery_event_ready

1 check first object to see if name matches

3 if property exists, return value of property
4 if no matches, look at next object
5 if no matches after checking all objects, return 'no such contact'

This is my Bootstrap skeleton, @kenvng. You might want to try using it and throwing the main body of the information from the page you're trying to use locally into it and see if it works. I ran into some trouble trying to copy the freeCodeCamp code into .html files, too, which was why I ended up researching and keeping my own skeletons for personal use.

The script tags want to be on lines by themselves, @Kev2Dope, and the opening part of the document.ready function also wants to be on a line by itself, as does the document.ready closing brackets, so the whole thing should take up four lines.

@Jaygalaxy 2 issues
the class name is not the one they ask you for, it should be smaller-image not smaller-img
second, you need to assign that class to the img tag you have
similar to how you assigned red-text to your h2 and p tags

@coymeetsworld came across this question the other day -
Given a string with alphabets, digits, and spaces, return only the numbers in an array.
can you think of anything simpler than this
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 03 2017 02:50
in JS?
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 03 2017 02:50
yeah JS
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 03 2017 02:50
regex?
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 03 2017 02:51
for the whole thing?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 03 2017 02:51
yeah why not
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 03 2017 02:51
what about returning in array?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 03 2017 02:51
/\D/g is your friend
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 03 2017 02:51
as numbers, not strings
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 03 2017 02:51
str.replace([^0-9]/g,'')
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 03 2017 02:51
like 2 not "2"
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 03 2017 02:51
uh, one sec
add a plus to it
that will coerce the variable to a number so that should work
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 03 2017 02:53
but you'll still need to
  1. split string into array
  2. use parseInt on each num
right?
@coymeetsworld @thekholm80
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 03 2017 02:53
yeah let me think about it
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 03 2017 02:53
because using just regex would give "245678" etc
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 03 2017 02:54
so you need to return an arr of numbers right?
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 03 2017 02:54
yup
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 03 2017 02:55
function parseNumbers(str) {
  return str.replace(/[^0-9]/g, '').split('').map(num => +num);
}
or use the \D like @thekholm80 mentioned
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 03 2017 02:56
@coymeetsworld +num
what does this do?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 03 2017 02:56
function parseNumbers(str) {
  return str.replace(/\D/g, '').split('').map(num => +num);
}
coerces the value to a number, i believe I'm saying that right lol
w/o it itll be a string value like you mentioned
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 03 2017 02:57

@Manish-Giri

const parseNumbers = (str) => {
  return str.replace(/\D/g, '').split('');
}

gave me an array of stringed numbers

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm on the Basic Javascript lesson about else statements: https://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/introducing-else-statements
The solution has "var result". Is "var result" necessary? Can the function still work without "var result"?

with "var result"

function testElse(val) {
  var result = "";

  if (val > 5) {
