i did a plain js project for giggles a while back and dynamically adding stuff into the dom was a real pain in the butt
really made me appreciate jQuery more

Jun 28 2017 00:01
@thekholm80 did you try vue.js?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 28 2017 00:01
I have no interest in Vue
I <3 React and I'll learn Angular if a job requires it
Ahmed Tarek
@ahmedtarek2134
Jun 28 2017 00:02
just try it and you will see how amazing it is, I know React. Vue and getting into Angular
just to add all to my experience list you know
Kyle Holm

Jun 28 2017 00:02
i hate that Vue and Angular re-write the language
ng-if or v-if just say if dang it, it's not rocket surgery

you have vue components
html in html, css in css and js in js
thats what vue does
you write them all in one file
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 28 2017 00:03
sounds interesting, but I still haven't used Node yet
Ahmed Tarek
@ahmedtarek2134
Jun 28 2017 00:04
just use the vue-cli to generate an app and you are good to go
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 28 2017 00:04
I've learned some Angular and I like React, idk if I really need to branch off
I have a default project config for react/redux/webpack all that stuff already
and that was SO MUCH FUN to setup
Ahmed Tarek

still better than trying to reconfigure create-react-app
Ahmed Tarek
@ahmedtarek2134
Jun 28 2017 00:05
tbh for react it so simple to start with your own config
just get the babel-preset-react
you are set
I tried to include sass or stylus in create-react-app

Jun 28 2017 00:08
what is testing exactly?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 28 2017 00:08
testing helps validate your code is doing what its supposed to do
Ahmed Tarek
@ahmedtarek2134
Jun 28 2017 00:08
so is it like linting?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld

its an important tool, and something I don't do nearly enough
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 28 2017 00:09
@coymeetsworld look at this though if you change anything that affects another component it will let you know
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 28 2017 00:09
not exactly, linting is for "compile-time" errors
testing is for runtime errors
Ahmed Tarek
@ahmedtarek2134
Jun 28 2017 00:09
any resources on getting started with it?
Coy Sanders

@coymeetsworld
Jun 28 2017 00:11
what do you mean by if you change anything @thekholm80 ?
looks like its used to validate your view components?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 28 2017 00:12
it saves a snapshot of your components render, then if you modify a reducer or something that would change the component it lets you know
also, if you google react testing 2017 it's all jest
wait, one enzyme
Ahmed Tarek
@ahmedtarek2134
Jun 28 2017 00:13
guys what should I start with
mocha, karma or jest>
?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 28 2017 00:13
i will probably try both mocha and jest
i want to automate testing apis and i know how to do that with mocha
Ahmed Tarek
@ahmedtarek2134
Jun 28 2017 00:14
hmm oke then
thx
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 28 2017 00:15
hmm well i just started with mocha
i guess i could try jest
Ahmed Tarek
@ahmedtarek2134
Jun 28 2017 00:16
I will still hold on to learning more node for now and then go to testing
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 28 2017 00:16
is it only geared for testing components though? what about simple functions with input/output @thekholm80 ?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 28 2017 00:16
I'm not sure, i've not looked that far into it
I think jest is a full testing suite though, with snapshot just handling the components
Jest is used by Facebook to test all JavaScript code including React applications
Ahmed Tarek

Hypothetically, like if I was doing this for real, would I just have to have the link text handy to paste it in again?
Ahmed Tarek
@ahmedtarek2134
Jun 28 2017 00:20
yes
or u could set the attribute value in js
and also set it in html
the js will overwrite the html
just delete the js and it will use the value in html

hey guys, I have some questions about the tribute page that you're supposed to make, questions regarding the nesting of several divs as it is done in the example site, pleae helpl

@zhay37 sure thing man what are your questions
Teodor
@zhay37
Jun 28 2017 00:27
@mado-is-here thanks man! in the example, there's an excessive use of divs, I understand the div class = container one but i dont get the jumbotron..? here ill link the code and highlight what i dont really get

<div class="container">
<div class="jumbotron">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-12">
<h1 class="text-center">Dr. Norman Borlaug</h1>
<h2 class="text-center"><em>The man who saved a billion lives</em></h2>
<div class="thumbnail"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3689/10613180113_fdf7bcd316_b.jpg">
<div class="caption text-center">Dr. Norman Borlaug, third from left, trains biologists in Mexico on how to increase wheat yields - part of his life-long war on hunger.</div>

alright so in the 1st section I dont get why he uses div class jumbotron, i also dont really see a need for a container div that contains all the code although ive seen it being used all the time, mind explaining those 2 things?

i also dont get why theres a div class col-xs-12 declared if right after you use the text-center class

@mado-is-here still there man?
Mado
@mado-is-here
Jun 28 2017 00:38
@zhay37 i see what you're speaking of, Every has their own way of coding things. Its like cooking if you think of it from a different standpoint, theres no ONE recipe to cook chicken for example, that being said, if we delete the tags where the jumbotron class is implemented we see that the nice gray theme he had going on dissapears, also things may appear different based on the browser you are using and device you are using. this may have been his reason to use the col class becaue it ensure responsiveness on the webpage
Ellyria
@Ellyria
Jun 28 2017 00:39
If you leave the class="text-center" attribute off of those two heading elements, @zhay37, then the two headings will be aligned left. The col-xs-12 class tells the container how wide to be (how many of the 12 available columns to use, starting from the left). You can test it by removing the class="text-center" attribute from the headings and by changing the col-xs-12 class to a different number, like col-xs-10 and seeing what happens to the page.
Mado
@mado-is-here
Jun 28 2017 00:39
@zhay37 although it may appear fine to you even with the removal of this col, different browsers and devices may make the page behave differently when it shrinks so its kind of just a safety net to include bootstrap's responsive layout

Mado
@mado-is-here
Jun 28 2017 00:42
@zhay37 dont think that just because he created the page that way, it HAS to be that way, this was also a misconception for me when i began learning html. If you can create the same or similar functionality to his page without using all the nested tags then its fine. You can acheive the same result multiple ways
Teodor
@zhay37
Jun 28 2017 00:42
i guess i'll get to it then! :D see what i can come up with
oh and btw one more question if you dont mind @mado-is-here
Mado

Jun 28 2017 00:44
You can go to your profile page at https://www.freecodecamp.com/zhay37 and see all of your completed challenges and projects and look at your solutions, @zhay37.
I think it's really nice of them to store them for us so that we can review them.

Jun 28 2017 00:45

ahh works now!
Ellyria

Jun 28 2017 00:49
@mado-is-here oh i thought that was quick..!
@mado-is-here i feel like it would take me quite a bit longer to do mine.. i forget some little things that you've added to yours
like, i wouldn't have remembered the img-responsive class to your img, that makes it so it automatically fits on all screens if i recall correctly..?
Mado
@mado-is-here
Jun 28 2017 00:50
@zhay37 lol it all depends on the person, some code faster than others, you dont have to get it done in one or four hours or even one day, its all up to you, take all the time you need!
@zhay37 yes, its so that the image can be viewed correctly from any device
@zhay37 we all start somewhere, even if your first work is not a masterpiece, or your second or third, eventually, with enough practice it will be! and you will be creating pages like that in like 20 minutes or less lol. its all a process or memorizing, practicing, and reinforcing your knowledge through ciding
coding*
Mado
@mado-is-here
Jun 28 2017 00:56
@zhay37 also I do reccommend having a notebook and writing things down because it reinforces what you learn more, Also drawing examples is, from what ive read, even better than just writing things. So my notebook is full of doodles :) but it helps me remember. Anyhow, Happy coding! We would love to see your finished product later

Jun 28 2017 00:56
hey guys. I've been running into the same problem for a few days now, something that doesn't quite click. I was wondering if someone had a sec to explain
I'm having trouble with classes, more specifically connecting a class to an element.
Dario
@destrabao89
Jun 28 2017 00:56
@zhay37 I've actually been taking hand-written notes on most every challenge since I started, just cause I feel rewriting it all on paper actually helps me remember a bit better than when I simply type up notes. It's been useful when I needed to flip back and forth to apply a previous concept to a new challenge
Ellyria
@Ellyria
Jun 28 2017 00:57
What does the code look like, @yourGeekGoddess?
Mado
@mado-is-here
Jun 28 2017 00:57
@yourGeekGoddess Hi! I'd love to explain

@yourGeekGoddess
Jun 28 2017 00:57
just the concept.

@destrabao89 good to hear you too take written notes! i think ill try it too!
yourGeekGoddess
@yourGeekGoddess
Jun 28 2017 00:57
I have had the same problem on a few different projects
Mado
@mado-is-here
Jun 28 2017 00:58
@yourGeekGoddess is your question how classes affect elements?
yourGeekGoddess
@yourGeekGoddess
Jun 28 2017 00:58
so I suppose the concept isnt clicking in my brain.
So, from what I understand, a class can be appied to as many or as few elements as you want. It's like a mask persay... however, I repetedly screw up actually applying the class to the element
Ellyria
@Ellyria
Jun 28 2017 01:00
You assign the class attribute with the specified value inside the opening tag of the elements, @yourGeekGoddess. Those can then be used as a selector when writing your CSS rules. So if you give three elements the class="red" attribute and then create a CSS rule that turns the text in the .red class red, then only the elements in the red class will have red text.
yourGeekGoddess
@yourGeekGoddess
Jun 28 2017 01:01
like, right now I think i get how to apply 1 class to an alement.
would be like...
<h1 class="classname" ectect
i still always put <h1> but im sure that will fix itself with repetition?
so i guess my question is.... how do you impliment more than 1 class without breaking your code
Mado
@mado-is-here
Jun 28 2017 01:04
@yourGeekGoddess so let me try to explain this in another light. Classes give elements their 'theme', If you have a store where you sell shirts, The TYPE of shirt would be your class. Is it a red shirt with thick cloth, with a hood attatched to it and patches all over? you dont want to write that all in long lines of code, so you write this within a class which you can then apply as many times as needed
Ellyria
@Ellyria
Jun 28 2017 01:04
Can you show the whole element, @yourGeekGoddess? It looks like you have the right idea, but I'd like to see a complete one.
To put more than one class on one element, you'd separate the values with a space between each one.
Mado
@mado-is-here
Jun 28 2017 01:05
@yourGeekGoddess also to give multiple classes you just use a space between their names like so: <p class="red-text big-letters"> HELLO! </p>
yourGeekGoddess
@yourGeekGoddess
Jun 28 2017 01:06
Thank you!
I think I for some reaon by default put the classes in seperate quotes, or put a comma, or both.
gonna have to make a note =3

When you use button without the period, you're targeting all the buttons on the page, @destrabao89. When you use .well with the period in front of it, you're targeting all the elements in the well class.

CSS has a property called width that controls an element's width. Just like with fonts, we'll use px (pixels) to specify the image's width.

For example, if we wanted to create a CSS class called larger-image that gave HTML elements a width of 500 pixels, we'd use:

<style>
  .larger-image {
    width: 500px;
  }
</style>

Create a class called smaller-image and use it to resize the image so that it's only 100 pixels wide.

Ahhhh I think I understand. So would I also technically be able to just do
$("button").addClass("animated bounce");
$("button").addClass("animated shake")
and essentially have the same effect?
Since all those buttons are within the well element anyway

Perhaps on that page, @destrabao89, but you'd be getting the effect in a different way. Also, in a larger page with more elements, doing it that way might give undesired results. Using the class gives you more control sometimes.

Any time, @destrabao89. It sounds like you've totally got the hang of this, though. You're already exploring and trying things on your own. I have a feeling you will go far.
Since you already have a style element at the top, @bronxconga, you'll want to put it inside of that instead of creating another one.
Also, remember that the instructions want you to create the smaller-image rule with a pixel width of 100, @bronxconga.

CSS is very picky about how you format the rules, @bronxconga. All of the punctuation has to be a certain way, and the example shows how it's done. Also, the name of your rule isn't the name they want you to give it. You might want to go to the beginning of the instructions for that challenge and do them one step at a time.
Does it look different now, @bronxconga?

@bitcoinabdi oh duh you're right
you have to push the spread into the newArr
bitcoinabdi
@bitcoinabdi
Jun 28 2017 02:02

function copyMachine(arr, num) {
let newArr = [];
while (num >= 1) {
// change code below this line
for (var i = 0; i < num; i++) {
arr.push(i);
// change code above this line
num--;
}
return newArr[...arr.push(i)];
}

// change code here to test different cases:
console.log(copyMachine([true, false, true], 2));

That looks really nice, @pkpraveen603. All of your links except for one have the correct target attribute, but the top left one (your name) is missing that, so the link doesn't work (CodePen requirement). Also, I would make the grey backgrounds of the icons in the contact form align so that they're all the same width, but that's a personal opinion and not at all necessary. Other than that, it looks really sharp!

Jun 28 2017 02:31

Hey, all.

Right now, I have the following code, which produces the following image

                <div class="row" id="btnBar">
                    <a href="#"><div id="fbBtn"><i class="fa fa-facebook" ></i></div></a>
                    <a href="#"><div id="twitterBtn"><i class="fa fa-twitter"></i></div></a>
                    <a href="#"><div id="nextQuoteBtn"><i class="fa fa-arrow-right"></i></div></a>
                </div>

And I'm trying to get each of these "buttons" on the same horizontal line, and where the two social buttons are to the left of the row, and the arrow is right at the center of the row. How would you think the best way to solve this would be? One thing I've noticed is that aligning crap with CSS is not a fun task, and is quite complicated (at least for me).

CRUD means the basic operations to be done in a data repository. You directly handle records or data objects; apart from these operations, the records are passive entities. Typically it's just database tables and records.
nmarino05
@nmarino05
Jun 28 2017 03:41
I just reset my code and am about to refresh my page.
We'll see if that does anything.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 28 2017 03:41
REST, on the other hand, operates on resource representations, each one identified by an URL. These are typically not data objects, but complex objects abstractions.

@Manish-Giri I had tried that earlier but instead of "arg" I had typed "num." I'll take a look and give it a try.
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 28 2017 03:43
@nmarino05 also I don't think you need to call the function & assign it's result to a variable.
Just define the function body.
Momozor
@momozor
Jun 28 2017 03:43
@thekholm80 so the crud example will be like https://www.cnn.com/, and REST should be some sort of https://www.google.com/gmail/about/
?
right?
or I'm still not getting it
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 28 2017 03:44
I think the crud is a simple read/write/modify/delete of database items, rest is a lot more complex

Maybe I don't fully get it, or we are doing REST+ CRUD without us noticing, since they both involves similar HTTP protocols. I think I need to do a REST specific tutorial to 'get' it.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 28 2017 04:01
http methods are the same for both, i think it's the system you're interacting with that's different
Momozor
@momozor
Jun 28 2017 04:01
yeah, probably.
Resources expose easily understood directory structure URIs.
Representations transfer JSON or XML to represent data objects and attributes.
Messages use HTTP methods explicitly (for example, GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE).
Stateless interactions store no client context on the server between requests. State dependencies limit and restrict scalability. The client holds session state.

if you want each item in your list to have an id i'd suggest <li id='whateverID'>
but if each list item is getting the same style you should consider using class= instead of id= that way you can write the class style once instead of repeating it for each id
DRY = don't repeat yourself

<h1 class> Hello World </h1>

Darren

Jun 28 2017 06:06
@BVodka what's the question asking you to do?
just to add green background?
it
's not asking for a class or anything?
COKER BUSAYO OLADIPUPO
@BVodka
Jun 28 2017 06:07
full list of question here @DarrenfJ Create an h1 element.
Your h1 element should have the text Hello World.
Make sure your h1 element has a closing tag.
Give your body element the color property of green.
Give your body element the font-family property of Monospace.
Your h1 element should inherit the font Monospace from your body element.
Your h1 element should inherit the color green from your body element.

@gristforthemill you need to assign the class you just created to the img tag. You defined smaller-image just fine looks like
@Azerop when you use nth-child(n), it select every n child of a parent element

if I had something like

<div>
  <p>some p</p>
  <p>some p2</p>
  <p>some p3</p>
  <p>some p4</p>
  <p>some p5</p>
</div>

and jQuery code:

$("p:nth-child(4)").addClass("someClass");

The HTML code would look like this:

<div>
  <p>some p</p>
  <p>some p2</p>
  <p>some p3</p>
  <p class="someClass">some p4</p>
  <p>some p5</p>
