Hi all, I'm currently working on the personal portfolio project and I'm stuck. Here is the outline: https://codepen.io/TomV/pen/PjjVrz
I can't make it scroll when I click the buttons
I am trying to make the scrolling work by implementing this template from scratch: https://startbootstrap.com/template-overviews/scrolling-nav/
I've been stuck on this for days, any advice for what I am missing would be greatly appreciated
Also, any clue why when data-spy highlights the buttons according to each section, the highlighting is cut and appears in two places in the navbar?
Thanks!

@Tomasvrba add padding to the top of your menu items it brings you to, because the navbar blocks it. and idk what you mean by scrolling..

Allen Ma

Hi I have a question relating to jQuery

I'm using the scrollTo jquery plugin to build a smooth scrolling portfolio page for the portfolio challenge
https://github.com/flesler/jquery.scrollTo
I have a bootstrap nav bar and I'm using this plugin to scroll to the clicked section
So if I click "contact" on the navbar, the page scrolls to the contact section
For the sections, I have divtags with id's like "contact", "portfolio" etc. and for the navbar, I have href's corresponding to the ids like #contact, #portfolio etc.
What I don't understand is why my line of code $(window).scrollTo(this.hash); won't work?...And why $(window).scrollTo(this.hash, this.hash); works?

From my understanding, this.hash extracts the href attribute, and according to the scrollTo documentation, this alone is enough. However, through random experimentation, it seems like $(window).scrollTo(this.hash, this.hash); works, although I have no idea why.

@allenmqcymp $(window).scrollTo(this.hash{horizontal position},this.hash{vertical position}) So when you are writting the first one, it only takes the horizontal position value.

My search-wrapper div and my result-container div are too wide on mobile. I am having issues making it responsive . Can someone help me out? I tried just changing the width of the .result-container and I couldn't get it to center properly.

@bookofbash what are you doing to make your search bar mobile-responsive? You can either use a media query defining the max-width for certain devices. or use bootstrap grid system and set col-xs-12 and so on.

Anybody knows how to restructure my code so that I do not get 'undefined' as my answer.
I know it is a classic 'aync' problem.

function foo(){
var result ="";
if (navigator.geolocation){
navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position){
result = position.coords.latitude + " " + position.coords.longitude;
});
}
return result;
};

var answer = foo();
console.log(answer);

Please help.
Thank You.

@kr5hn4 thanks but what if I want my 'result' variable someplace else, outside of my 'foo' function.
It wd be 'undefined' unless the callback in the 'getCurrentPosition' is called.
How to make sure that that the code outside executes only after the 'getCurrentPosition' callback is called.

@iamrkcheers you can make result a global variable,
var result ;
function foo(){
  if(navigator.geolocation) {
    navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
      result = position.coords.latitude + " " + position.coords.longitude;
      //console.log(result)
    });
  }
};
foo()
//result will be undefined if you immediately try to access it after this
//wait for some time, till the callback gets executed
// you can use the setTimeout function for this, (this would not work if the call back is not executed in 2 seconds)
setTimeout(function(){console.log(result)}, 2000)

Hi guys, I have issues modelling a schema in MongoDB. My use case has users (with authentication) who will upload products in different categories so their products can be accessed by customers who will then place orders for them. I am not interested in have the customer data in my DB, it will only be in each order record.
I think I should have collections Users, Products, Orders and Categories. However, modelling them and their respective documents in such a way that will permit future scaling without a rewrite is where I'm not certain what I should do. I'd appreciate your help

good morning all
I don't really need help with a challenge, but I believe I found a bug in one, unless I misunderstand Regex somehow
Margaret
@Margaret2

Jul 08 2017 15:20
and what do you have
is it okay to discuss code here? just dont want to ruin the challenge for anyone
Margaret
@Margaret2
Jul 08 2017 15:20
yeah it's fine
JD Flick
@jdflick
Jul 08 2017 15:20
cool, so here's what I've found
when using regex \W it isn't including the _
so I have to include this manually
Margaret
@Margaret2
Jul 08 2017 15:21
right
that's not a bug, that's just regex
JD Flick
@jdflick
Jul 08 2017 15:22
however the docs on the regex specifically state the following: Matches any character that is not a word character from the basic Latin alphabet. Equivalent to [^A-Za-z0-9_].
notice the _ after the 9

so I'm not crazy?
Michael Cavataio
@MCavataio
Jul 08 2017 15:27
@jdflick hmm yes it seems that way... it seems like \w should include the _ while \W should not match the underscore
Margaret
@Margaret2
Jul 08 2017 15:28
@MCavataio wait a minute, if \w matches an _, then \W should not match one, right
Michael Cavataio
@MCavataio
Jul 08 2017 15:28
right
JD Flick
@jdflick
Jul 08 2017 15:28

Jul 08 2017 15:29

@williamtech814
I'm having a problem with challenge Seek and Destroy
here is my code

function destroyer(arr) {

var finalArr=[];
var itemsLeft=arr[0].length;

for(var items=0;items<=itemsLeft;items++){

for(var numSearch=arr.slice(1).length;numSearch>1;numSearch--){

 var isAMatch=arr.match(arr[numSearch-1] /g);

  if(isAMatch){break;}else{
    finalArr.push(arr[items]);
    break;
  }

}

}

return finalArr;
}

destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);

@mitron6
Jul 08 2017 17:32
@williamtech814 You need the arguments that come after arr.
@williamtech814 In the instructions, there is a link to the Arguments object. You will need the arguments object to complete this challenge.

function destroyer(arr) {
  // Remove all the values
  var numArgs = arguments.length;
  function destroy(item) {
    return item !== this;
  }
  for (var i = 1; i < numArgs; i++) {
    arr = arr.filter(destroy, arguments[i]);
  }

  return arr;
}
mitron6
@mitron6
Jul 08 2017 17:41
@nwilson314arr.filter(function(item) {return item != arguments[i]}) Maybe something like this.
Nate Wilson
@nwilson314
Jul 08 2017 17:42
I tried something like that but it doesn't like that I'm creating a function within a for loop
mitron6
@mitron6
Jul 08 2017 17:43
@nwilson314 Using an anon function inside filter works fine. Not sure what you tried, but that is a pretty good way to solve this challenge.
Nate Wilson
@nwilson314
Jul 08 2017 17:43
hmm
let me give that a try again
mitron6
@mitron6
Jul 08 2017 17:43
@nwilson314 Why don't you try again and then if that doesn't work paste your code again here.
Nate Wilson
@nwilson314
Jul 08 2017 17:43
but at the same time I don't see why the way I did it now isn't working
mitron6
@mitron6
Jul 08 2017 17:45
@nwilson314 It is an interesting approach you are trying. Let me play with it a bit.
@nwilson314 The value of this inside your destroy function is an empty object. Not sure why yet. But that clearly won't work. You can insert a console.log(this) inside the function to see.
@nwilson314 It looks like thisArg is not implemented in the polyfill. Maybe it just is not supported on your browser.
Nate Wilson
@nwilson314
Jul 08 2017 17:50
@mitron6 I'm not sure I follow haha. thisArg is a part of the function filter itself. How does browser matter?
and even besides, the console log for freecodecamp is showing that my output is the correct answer
mitron6
@mitron6
Jul 08 2017 17:52
@nwilson314 Interesting. I tested in javascript repl. Let me try in FCC.

is the arguments keyword a global variable?
can I use it in a function?

function destroyer(arr) {
var testNum=arguments.length-1;

var finalArr=arr.filter(

function(item){

for(var i=1;i<=testNum;i++){

  if(item==arguments[i]){return false;}

}

  return true;

});

return finalArr;

}

it works for like 1 change but when case testing it doesn’t

hey all i need a little help for an assignment for school (summer school) the following are the instructions from the instructer any help would be greatly appreciated:
Use JSFiddle. Create an array that can hold fifteen integers. Write a function to fill each position of the array with a random number from 100 to 500.

Then display the contents of the array on the screen. You must use a loop to call the function and print the results from the function.

You must use the length field of your array and not a literal number (like 10) in the condition of the loop.

Output should look like this:

The number in position 0 is 154.

The number in position 1 is 203.

The number in position 2 is 477.

and so forth until you have shown all 15 items in the array.

Place your JSFiddle link in this assignment or use the website URL then click submit.

Notes: Make an algorithm

How do you make a random number between 100 and 400? Put this code in your function.

Loop to fill your array. Call your function inside your loop. You do not need to put 15 numbers in the array definition. Simply define an array that you will fill in your loop.

Use another loop to print your array items. The output line is the same for each so you should use the counter in your loop for the position part and then the reference to the array at that position to print the last number. In other words alert("The number in position " + variable + " is " + array[variable]);

I am working on this challenge on the beta page... Regular Expressions: Positive and Negative Lookahead and this is my code: let sampleWord = "astronaut";
let pwRegex = /a(?=\w{1,5}z)(?=\d{2})/gi; // Change this line
let result = pwRegex.test(sampleWord);
I am failing two of the tests... Your regex should match "bana12"
Your regex should match "abc123" What am I missing? I have a suspicion that it is syntax. I have tried several other combination but still failing. Thank you.

Also take a look at this SO thread. There is several methods how to insert remote content in modal
