Hey I know i was here last night asking for help with the forecast viewer, but I tried the api which was made here: freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp#15598 and that stil has the same issue of not being able to reach the necessary information. Any ideas?

@cmccormack
Jul 10 2017 00:58
@Hijerboa are you using darksky? If so, and if you're using getJSON, try adding ?callback=? to the end of your url. If your url already has the ?, just add &callback=?. This will tell jQuery to use JSONP instead of JSON and it should work for the darksky api

hey guys. I am using the beta.freecodecamp. It wants me to add a box-shadow property for the thumbnail id... I did this: .thumbnail {
box-shadow: 0 10px 20px rgba(0,0,0,0.19), 0 6px 6px rgba(0,0,0,0.23);

}

ooh got it. for Id's you use # and not .

when you use bracket notation (or dot) you need to specify the property of the object, not its value

oh
you're given an array
doesn't matter what array, it has numbers
then you're giving a list of numbers
so
([1,2,2,1],2)
say you're given that
you need to remove all the numbers in the array that match the ones outside
so you get
[1,1]
clear ?

Well, a <div> is a box that you can assign properties to. This is a big box that all your code will go into.
so you need to put the lid of the box, the <div> at the top and the base of the box, the </div> at the bottom.
And you know how to assign a classs to an element..... <element class="classname">
so you have all the tools you need.
Does that help at all?

@SweetCodingInc Make a program that filters a list of strings and returns a list with only your friends name in it.

If a name has exactly 4 letters in it, you can be sure that it has to be a friend of yours!

Ex: Input = ["Ryan", "Kieran", "Jason", "Yous"], Output = ["Ryan", "Yous"]

The palindrome in a nutshell
  1. I got an original string with value "eye"
  2. I reverse the string
  3. I check the reversed string if it is equal to the original string
  4. If the reversed string is equal to original string, it is palindrome. Else, it is not.
This explanation won't really help if you are doing a string with non-alphanumeric characters. Although, that is the fundamental.

Hi all, can someone please explain to me the error in my code

var myArray = ["I love you", "a little", "a lot", "passionately", "madly", "not at all"];
function howMuchILoveYou(nbPetals) {
// your code
var i = myArray.length;
var currentPhrase = [];
while (nbPetals > 0) {
i--;
var updatedArray = currentPhrase.push(myArray[i]);

  if (nbPetals === 0) {
  return updatedArray;
}

}
}

The instructions are...
Who remembers back to their time in the schoolyard, when girls would take a flower and tear its petals, saying each of the following phrases each time a petal was torn:

I love you
a little
a lot
passionately
madly
not at all
When the last petal was torn there were cries of excitement, dreams, surging thoughts and emotions.

Your goal in this kata is to determine which phrase the girls would say for a flower of a given number of petals, where nb_petals > 0.

Hi, i have a mission to create my first web application and i would def need some help with understanding the backend aspect of a website... I'm supposed to create a website reservation system which has a calander, datepicker and so on. I know html, css and a bit of javascript/jQuery, but how do i take the leap and make the application dynamic?
Do i need to learn php / node.js or is their some open source applications i can implement?
Momozor
@momozor
Jul 10 2017 14:45
The thing really matters about backend is the long term storage system, aka database.
Momozor
@momozor
Jul 10 2017 14:54
For instance, a hospital management website. Visitors send inputs (birthdate, name, medical records, etc), the server store them into database, and process it (send medical records to your doctor, name and birthdate to your insurance company etc), and send output back to the client based on the processed input (successful medical record validation, or tell your client that the insurance company doesn't find anything that relates to your identity, etc).
Unlike front end websites, you get to keep the client data, and it will never lose unless you made it to.
Momozor
@momozor
Jul 10 2017 15:01
In a nutshell:
  • Client send input to server
  • Server store client input into database
  • Server process input (send to hospital, add numbers, draw from bank accounts, send ads to emails etc)
  • Server send output based on the processed input (the stored data) to the client

@MaxColesFrederiksen Pick a micro framework, build a blog, and learn from there. That's how I grasp the fundamentals of the server side development.
Unless you want to do all of the tasks as soon as possible, then CMS might be a better choice. Thus, you are correct, CMS can be inflexible for something more than basics and CMS under the surface usually is complex when you need to tweak some functionality to get the flexibility.

A common task in JavaScript is to iterate through the contents of an array. One way to do that is with a for loop. This code will output each element of the array arr to the console:

var arr = [10,9,8,7,6];
for (var i=0; i < arr.length; i++) {
   console.log(arr[i]);
}

Remember that Arrays have zero-based numbering, which means the last index of the array is length - 1. Our condition for this loop is i < arr.length, which stops when i is at length - 1.

so let's forget our linux tribal geeky stuff. Now how to actually use Javascript reduce? I don't get this - var total = [0, 1, 2, 3].reduce(function(sum, value) { return sum + value;
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 10 2017 18:12
reduce takes in an array and returns a single value, using the callback function to determine what that value will be
the first parameter in the callback is called the accumulator, it holds the total value of the processed values
the second is the "current" it's the value of the current index being worked on
the third parameter is the index
it's not often used
i think there's a fourth parameter but i don't want to look on mdn right now

Jul 10 2017 18:14
yeah think we talked about it before
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 10 2017 18:14
@faraco so reduce itself has 2 parameters i think, a callback and the initial value of the accumulator
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 10 2017 18:14
it also is not used often, but could be. Array meaning the original array even while its being reduced
it def needs callback but initial value is optional
if initial value is left off, the first "prev" is the initial value
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 10 2017 18:16
i mostly use that to set my accumulator to a certain data type, like if i want it to be an array
but then we're in map() territory and reduce might be less useful
Momozor
@momozor
Jul 10 2017 18:18
hmm...so does sum collect all the array element, then value add itself with the sum?
the first parameter sounds like map()
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 10 2017 18:19
you should check the MDN @faraco, it has some good examples https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/Array/Reduce
yeah first param, like map (and filter) is a callback function that is run on each element in the array you're calling it on

Jul 10 2017 18:20
@faraco sum is 0 in the first iteration, and from then on sum is what was returned previously. Value is the next value here 1. So sum + value returns 1 on the first iteration. Then sum is 1 and value is 2 and 3 is returned. And so on in this fashion until there are no more items.

@DennisEnt

The function is supposed to return a new array made up of num copies of arr.

they've already set up a for loop for you, so you just need to write the code that adds a copy of arr to newArr inside the loop

@Margaret2 All ive got is:
newArr.push(arr)

@DennisEnt they want you to use the spread operator, look at the example on how to use it
Dennis
@denskiz
Jul 10 2017 21:18
@Margaret2
newArr.push(...arr);
Margaret
@Margaret2
Jul 10 2017 21:19

Jul 10 2017 21:21
now do you know why it works?
Margaret
@Margaret2
Jul 10 2017 21:22
it seems to give the same response as newArr.push(arr), so i don't really see the advantage of using [...arr]

in this situation there isn't a huge benefit
except it creates a new copy of the array instead of a pointer to the old array, if i remember right
