and if you want to do every item, how about forEach ?
Ginger
@GingerChew
Aug 09 2017 00:00
okay, I was doing that and it wasn't working, I'll try it again
oh yeah, for each would be perfect here
Ginger
@GingerChew
Aug 09 2017 00:11
Okay, so I've got this much done so far.
$.getJSON(api, function(Object) {
      function listCreate() {
        var query = Object.query
        var pages = query.pages
        pages.forEach(function(pages){
            $("ul").append(
            "<li>" +  + '</li>')
          }
        )}
    }
$.getJSON(api, function(Object) {
      function listCreate() {
        var query = Object.query
        var pages = query.pages
        pages.forEach(function(pages){
            $("ul").append(
            "<li>" + (page title) + '</li>')
          }
        )}
    }
the second one i mean, but I'm not sure how to access the page title? can someone help me with the forEach method?
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 00:17
hmm, something like pages.XXX ? or pages[XXX] , the XXX being what you want to grab, you need to check the object structure for that
Ginger
@GingerChew
Aug 09 2017 00:18
Yeah, the object goes {pages: {2559786: {actual info I want}}}
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 00:18
also when i meant foreach earlier, i meant for in loop, as far as i know foreach isnt for object (but i don't know much lol)
Ginger
@GingerChew
Aug 09 2017 00:19
haha, I saw that but figured you knew something I didn't
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 00:19
no lol, i only noticed when i looked back at my own project
it's in for var in
Ginger
@GingerChew
Aug 09 2017 00:20
yeah I got the mdn up on the side to help me out
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 00:21
also using pages as variable name twice in a row may be confusing ? obj.pages.XXX.AAA , the XXX is the long string of numbers, for in takes cares of it, so you only seek AAA, should be stuff like title, content, image, etc etc
you can always stringify your output and display it into the html so you can have an idea of where you are in the object tree
Ginger
@GingerChew
Aug 09 2017 00:23
Yeah, I'm rewriting basically everything thanks to this discovery so nothing is for sure just yet
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 00:25
you should make one manual call (use the call url directly in your browser) depending on the browser you'll either get a bunch of text (to copy/paste and indent in notepad or whatever) or a clean representation
both are a great help
Ginger
@GingerChew
Aug 09 2017 00:31

  var test;
  var arr = str.split(" ");
  for(i=0;i<arr.length;i++){
    test = arr[i].length;}
    if (index<test){
    index = arr[i].length;
    }
   return index;
    }

findLongestWord("The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog");

@breese8009 it works
function findLongestWord(str) {
  var index = 0;
  var test;
  var arr = str.split(" ");
  for (i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {
    test = arr[i].length;

      index = arr[i].length;
    }
  }
  return index;

Anyone have trouble using JQuery in brackets ?
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 01:01
i haven't used bracket, but maybe you need to add some language pack for it to recognize jquery ?
stealthygame
@stealthygame
Aug 09 2017 01:02
@gersho its giving me like 50 JSLint Problems and wont run any code in my JS file. I've linked Jquery and my JS file to my html doc. Am I missing something else ? O.o
CodePen had no problem with it... But this JSLint thing hates me. :(
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 01:03
i wouldn't know, you should seek support at brackets
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 01:03
jquery is very popular, you shouldn't have any problem using it with any editor
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 01:04
for exemple in atom, you have addons for individual languages, but atom is only a text processor, it doesn't run code itself
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 01:04
you don't need addons to use any language in editor
editor is just for writting text
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 01:05
yeah, i meant for syntax check and other stuff (fancy colorz !)
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 01:05
maybe the problem is JSLint
is it a tool for checking your js code?
stealthygame
@stealthygame
Aug 09 2017 01:06
@longnt80 yes.
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 01:06

In Brackets, there's a " Live Preview" option. I've got it to work with my html, and then with my css. But when I linked it to my js file, nothing wants to function. Not even a console.log();
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 01:12
well, i'm not against built in stuff, but what help this "live preview" is, when you can simply have a browser window running your index.html ?
as a bonus you see how it will work in a actual browser

Aug 09 2017 01:20
hello, i am looking for an advice from someone experienced, myb senior dev
i'm university student and i'm starting a project with 2 colleagues of mine. we are building a web app for recruitment (sort of like recruitment agency). it will probably have some tests, user database. it would need an options for regular people to login and post their CVs, take tests and stuff like that but also for companies to hire these people.
my question is: since we are not that experienced with real world projects, which technologies shoud we use and learn to do this?
(mean? mern? something with postgresql? we don't want to waste too much time thinking which tools to use)
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 01:20

When I search for victoria it doesn't show up for me
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 01:41
just re-read user stories: you don't need to care what version you pick
Victoria, British Columbia
Queen Victoria
Victoria, Texas
Victoria (Australia)
Victoria

is what i get from yours, just like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria

the fcc version returns a search page result, even if the content has a disabiguation page, but like i said, user stories don't force one way or another

Ginger
@GingerChew
Aug 09 2017 01:51

Aug 09 2017 01:54
@gersho FYI, the other reason my CSS wasnt working when I opened up my HTML file from the folder was because i didnt put a "." before the "/" in my path name. It was "/calc.css" instead of "./calc.css"... so it wasn't working... -.-
I thought they meant the same thing tho.
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Aug 09 2017 01:55
@Margaret2 so I basically did nothing in this function LMAO I also changed it to <=50, actually had it like this originally

so I was working on something to put my my divs that get reference to the top of the page so that it scrolls about 50px under the top because the navbar-fixed does not have a work around
@Gersho
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 02:01
i had a similar problem i think and made a fixed size div at the top of the doc with nothing in it (hiding under the top bar)
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Aug 09 2017 02:03

how did you do that with a fixed div

<div style="position:fixed;height:50px;">

something like this?

Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 02:06

https://codepen.io/Gersho/pen/gmgPBG

.airbag {
height: 60px;
}
<div class="airbag">
<h1></h1>
</div>

or was your problem totaly not that ?
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Aug 09 2017 02:09
very nice, dammit I am trying to use this bootstrap boo bootstrap no fixed should I be using 4.0 for boostrap
Gersho
@Gersho

well it's the latest, so i assumed yes (it'll become obselete later i guess ?)
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Aug 09 2017 02:11
so you added airbag that helped or was it the .floatplz { that did it no that made me confused lmao
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 02:11
the floatplz is for the horizontal floating banner
but without airbag, the menu would be on top of the text at the top
it's a bit lame but it works :D
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Aug 09 2017 02:12
that is why I was trying to create an jquery to fix that and add 50px to the top after it is clicked
that is what I am saying lol lame or not if it works it works lol
I am redoing my portfolio trying to start showing my codepens so I redesinged it lol
stealthygame
@stealthygame
Aug 09 2017 02:13
@daddycardona You need to create space above something after its clicked?
Gersho
@Gersho
Aug 09 2017 02:13
i added 1 airbag at the top, and 1 at the start of every section , but those aren't mandatory, it just looked better with the style i've chosen
i dread the day i'll have to make it actually beautiful, because outside that floating menu, it's plain ugly
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Aug 09 2017 02:14

in the html, put an airbag on line 28 (before the div of your text, so the airbag isn't white background but transparant) give the id about to the airbag instead of the text, your about button will aim for just a bit up of your text, lame but magic
as a bonus will work even with js off

If you are posting code that is large, Please use Gist - https://gist.github.com/ then please paste the link here.
...
How to do code block format: ..... PLEASE try with a small block of code before you try to make a bigger one.
https://github.com/adam-p/markdown-here/wiki/Markdown-Cheatsheet#code
```js [SHIFT+ENTER]
// your code here
``` [CTRL+ENTER or CMD+ENTER to send]
Please do not confuse `s with 's.
Also note that the ```s need to each be on their own lines
The ` key can usually be found on most keyboards up next to the 1 key.
If you hit SHIFT+` it will give you the ~.
Example:
```
code
```
...
Output:

var code = undefined;

...
You can also do inline code formatting:
A string of text with a `variable` or `other bit of code`.
Output:
A string of text with a variable or other bit of code.

Not really a coding problem (yet!), but I got to about lesson/challenge 20 (image width) when I took a break and decided to make a GitHub account then link it. I did that and now all my progress has been cleared! I am still logged in to the same account and when I sign out and sign back in with the same email I used to sign up, I am back to [1] account progress. Is this anything you guys have seen before? I emailed team@freecodecamp.org but figured I would also ask here.

@stealthygame nothing easier, add event listener, use the audio interface and play()
document.getElementById('your button').addEventListener('click', function () {
audio.play();
});
obiously audio needs to be defined

Hi guys, i can't determine what they are asking me here. It seems fairly simple but I don't understand yet. You can easily decrement or decrease a variable by one with the -- operator.

i--;

is the equivalent of

i = i - 1;

Note
The entire line becomes i--;, eliminating the need for the equal sign.

Instructions
Change the code to use the -- operator on myVar.
var myVar = 11;

// Only change code below this line
myVar=i--;

says i is not defined
iso
@iso1048
Aug 09 2017 09:22
@NicovanderMerwe in the examples, i is used as a variable. In the exercise, myVar is being used as the variable.

@abdel974 You can do {this.state.currentPoint.map()} and then put the code that displays the entries in there
That way if the array is empty it will do nothing.
@abdel974 Something like this.
          {this.state.currrentPoint.map(c => <p>{c.username}</p>)}

<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

<p>Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p>

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Aug 09 2017 13:34
@ProgramNovice - to style the <p> elements as they are requesting, you have to have a CSS entry that has the selector as the letter p and then curly braces with the font-size setting between them. This should be within the existing <style> section, not a separate one. You might have to remove the font-size from the .red-text selector.

@abdel974 - I just tried this - - add a call to this.lastThirtyDays() to the end of your constructor for the Tabs object. That will invoke the function to set up the initial display. You might want to make some kind of indicator to note that that is the data that you are displaying.

@abdel974 - perhsp you can put the j into the state and have the function update it (reset it to 1) when you call one of the functions to invoke the data retrieval? I'm thinking that putting it in the state element would be the proper way to handle that, not just have a variable?

Guys I have a small doubt
If a variable is declared globally but defined in local function will the definition work or would it return undefined?
Chris
@bestintown23
Aug 09 2017 16:56
why is my slideshow overlapping my about us section, i would like the slideshow then the about us section. https://codepen.io/bestintown23/pen/VzpgyM

@Thayyebsalim
Aug 09 2017 16:57
apparently undefined
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Aug 09 2017 17:04
@Thayyebsalim the var declared in the function will work but it will only be local to the function

Aug 09 2017 17:10
@bestintown23 looks like your figure elements are in the wrong place, and your CSS may need to be adjusted a bit
@eunipa I use it every day but not an expert, what's your question?

@bestintown23 examine your html and make sure your elements are in the right place.
@bestintown23 from what I saw you had 3 figure elements in your intro section, not the gallery
Chris
@bestintown23
Aug 09 2017 17:19
@cmccormack i was looking to remove the gallery section, the goal is to have the nav bar where it is followed by the slideshow of photos, and then about us and then contact

Aug 09 2017 17:20
@bestintown23 ok. you asked why your images were covering your about us, that was probably why. If you want to reorganize you should complete that first

hi all, i did this https://codepen.io/abdel974/pen/BZVKxR?editors=0110 but i needed to use react so i did this https://codepen.io/abdel974/pen/JyNORO?editors=0110, but it doesn't work the way i want, i try to display the modal like i did in the first code(without react)
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Aug 09 2017 17:29
@abdel974 try adding a constructor for all class components. If you don't need state, you can just use a function component and pass props
Chris

Aug 09 2017 17:29
@cmccormack guess ill just start over
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Aug 09 2017 17:33
@abdel974 you should get int he habit of putting your opening brace/parens/whatever on the same line as the declaration. You can run into issues adding it below

Can't run the tests, can't even log it as a bug.

Why is pomodoro challenge one of the "final" projects for getting certification ? O.o
just a timer and playing a sound ? ... Thought the final projects would have been harder?

you can explain most problems with one line, doesn't make it easy
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 23:23
@stealthygame have you done the clock yet?
@stealthygame if you're just use setInterval or setTimeout to make the timer, it can be easy but your timer is shit, not a real clock
stealthygame
@stealthygame
Aug 09 2017 23:26
But it only asks for a "Timer" tho...
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 23:27
what is a timer?
clock, right?
stealthygame
@stealthygame
Aug 09 2017 23:27
I don't know what you mean by "real clock" then
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 23:27
if your clock is not accurate, it is not a clock
just a toy clock like the ones for kids to play with
@stealthygame but have you done your pomodoro clock yet?
stealthygame
@stealthygame
Aug 09 2017 23:29
@longnt80 Negative, I was only looking up timers functions on W3schools and stuff.
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 23:30
@stealthygame so just do it for now, test it out first, you might find some trouble even with setInterval or setTimeout

@longnt80 You have me curious again, so now I have to find out. lol
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 23:35
@stealthygame yeah, I made that clock with setInterval first and tested it and it is a toy clock
so I set out to re-did it
@stealthygame try search google "why setTimeout is not accurate for timer"
stealthygame
@stealthygame
Aug 09 2017 23:37
@longnt80 StackOverflow is saying it's only off by milliseconds depending on browser O.o ... ?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Aug 09 2017 23:39
@stealthygame not only off by milliseconds but it also behave differently when using as timer
like when you pause the clock and start again, your clock will run the whole 1 second again
you just have to do it to see it for yourself
stealthygame
@stealthygame
Aug 09 2017 23:40
So... start a reference timer as soon as page loads, then base your actuall pomo off that time ?
@longnt80 Working on it. You may have just curb stomped my procrastination. lol
