@piteto fair enough. i'd of probably done that wrong too then, by adding instead of content="device....." id of putit like content="width:device-width" so, id assume thats wrong then. But, for me. that is now good to know so. Awesome. cheers.

@TeddyHugs Good Morning Stephen :)
@Gersho Good night Gersho :)
Hey guys
I have a doubt about the code for the challenge "Create a Class to Target with jQuery Selectors"
Stephen
@TeddyHugs
Sep 17 2017 07:38
What doubts?
Rajan
@ProgramNovice
Sep 17 2017 07:39
<div class="container-fluid">
  <h3 class="text-primary text-center">jQuery Playground</h3>
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col-xs-6">
      <div class="well">
        <button class="btn btn-default target"></button>
        <button class="btn btn-default target"></button>
        <button class="btn btn-default target"></button>
      </div>
    </div>
    <div class="col-xs-6">
      <div class="well">
        <button class="btn btn-default target"></button>
        <button class="btn btn-default target"></button>
        <button class="btn btn-default target"></button>
      </div>
    </div>
  </div>
</div>
In this code,
does the class 'target' have a special meaning or is it just a random name given?
Ravi Kishore Thella
@ravikishorethella
Sep 17 2017 07:41
@ProgramNovice that is just a random name
Stephen

It can be a special menaing. But you have to specify it. But in this case it's a random name.

@imyashbhardwaj and your dataType is a json because you don't have a callback

@heroiczero
Sep 17 2017 09:51
@imyashbhardwaj just try deleting everything and inserting $("#p").html(data.data[0].app_temp); in the function
@imyashbhardwaj you could also retrieve other things like the city_name and so on from the object data.data[0].city_name

heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 17 2017 10:05
@imyashbhardwaj depends what you want to do but if you want to find all the name you need to cycle through the results array of data.results[0].name for the name and there are other information. Copy https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/place/nearbysearch/json?location=12.84,80.15&radius=5000&type=restaurant&keyword=&key=AIzaSyAUxpONmjvDKbyWoEmPbE7UfOC-E0-uAjI directly into the link and see the array and object try to retrieve the data directly.

    if (num > romanKey[i][0]) {

  }
why does the first function work, but the second returns `roman.push is not a function'?
korzo
@korzo
Sep 17 2017 12:16
@rscales02 Because roman is not array
Maybe you could post whole code
rscales02
@rscales02
Sep 17 2017 12:17

function convertToRoman(num) {
  var romanKey = [
    [1000, "M"],
    [900, "CM"],
    [500, "D"],
    [400, "CD"],
    [100, "C"],
    [90, "XC"],
    [50, "L"],
    [40, "XL"],
    [10, "X"],
    [9, "IX"],
    [5, "V"],
    [4, "IV"],
    [1, "I"]
  ];
  var roman = [];

  for (var i = 0; i < romanKey.length; i++) {
    if (num >= romanKey[i][0]) {
      roman.push(romanKey[i][1]);
      num = num-romanKey[i][0];
    }
  }

 return roman;
}

convertToRoman(36);
also, when I retun 'num' instead of 'roman' it returns '7' when I think it should return '0'

Sep 17 2017 12:22
@rscales02 Your code is not working, because num >= romanKey[i][0] can be valid more times
rscales02
@rscales02
Sep 17 2017 12:23
yeah, I realized that when it actually returned "x", "ix", "v"...
korzo
@korzo
Sep 17 2017 12:24
@rscales02 consider 300 >=romanKey[4][0]
@rscales02 You'll have num === 200 at the end of the iteration
Instead of 0
rscales02
@rscales02
Sep 17 2017 12:25
yeah, I follow. I guess a while function instead of if?
korzo
@korzo
Sep 17 2017 12:26
@rscales02 Not instead but inside for loop
@rscales02 you can replace if with while
rscales02
@rscales02
Sep 17 2017 12:27
that is what I meant, now I just have to remember how to make concat work ...
korzo
@korzo
Sep 17 2017 12:28
@rscales02 you don't need concat
@rscales02 Also there is no need to roman be array.
Change it to string and then roman += romanKey[i][1];
rscales02
@rscales02
Sep 17 2017 12:29
.join... too many methods not enough brain cells I guess lol
that is simpler, thanks @korzo

Hi. I am still doing my personal portfolio with CodePen and I am using font-awesome code for Facebook, Github, and Linkedin. I noticed from the example portfolio by Justin that clicking on the links will cause the links to each account to show. Also, I get a blank white page in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Could someone please clarify the end result? Do people need to be able to click through to get all the way to my LinkedIn profile for example?
For example, I have tried <li><a.button.social (href='https://www.facebook.com/artsypoets')<i class="fa fa-facebook"></i></a></li> which does nothing. I have tried <li> <a href="#"><i class="fa fa-linkedin"></i></a></li> but I don't know if I should switch the # to the actual profile url.

@imyashbhardwaj The Google Places API can't be called with AJAX. You need to do a reverse geocode based on latitude + longitude, and then use the Google Maps JavaScript API to access the Places API. Start here to learn more: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/tutorial
Here's an example:

// Google Maps Reverse Geocode gets location data by latitude + longitude
$.ajax({
  url: "https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json?latlng=12.84,80.15",
  success: logResults
});

// results logged by Reverse Geocode above
function logResults(json) {
  var address = json.results;

  // get the closest place ID for the coordinates
  for (var i = address.length - 1; i >= 0; i--) {
    var placeId = address[i].place_id;
  }

  // Use the places API to get data for the given place ID
  new google.maps.places.PlacesService(
    new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map"))
  ).getDetails({ placeId: placeId }, function(data, status) {

    // show the data received on the page
    $('body').append('<pre>' + JSON.stringify(data, null, 2) +'</pre>')
  });
}

You'll need to add <div id="map"></div> to your HTML for the code above to work

@duvidel I think this is a codepen thing because of how they use frames in their editor, but you'll need to use target="_blank" in your <a> tags:
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/artsypoets" target="_blank"><i class="fa fa-facebook"></i></a>

Any idea on how to fix the unordered list? (the bullet points stay left aligned but I want them centered)

ul {
  list-style-position: inside;
}
you'll need some tweaks to make it in a straight line though

Folks, I am very proud that I was able to get my fa links to work. I even looked up how to do a home page. However, it's quite a bit smaller than the other icons as noted above.

@Gersho
Sep 17 2017 19:59
you can change FA icons by using font size
duvidel
@duvidel
Sep 17 2017 20:00
ok. would that be as another css class like .fa fa-home aria-hidden="true {font size=30px;} or would I stick it in html?
thanks @Gersho

i would do it on the fa-home class, but anywhere works i guess
depends if you need to re-use somewhere else or not i guess

i am good with that. it will probably be isolated.
Do I need to specify a font-family since it's already from font awesome?

as far as i know you only need to interfer with size, but i'm no css expert sorry :P

oh, and in case it stops working when you try it on codepen, try adding !important

would that be in the class or here:href="http://www.dmjs.us"target='_blank'><i class="fa fa-home aria-hidden="true""class="bigicons"></i></a> Maybe I should have put the 2nd class outside the </i>?

@naveen62 get the user IP address and add that to a 'voted' list

how to get ip address
Garrus Napp
@GarrusNapp
Sep 17 2017 22:02
I'd go with IP AND user agent etc.
Jan Shah
@JanShah
Sep 17 2017 22:03
no point in user agent, if the client is using a different browser, the ip will still be the same
everything else could be different
Garrus Napp
@GarrusNapp
Sep 17 2017 22:03
but the 1 IP doesn't equal to 1 user
you'll block multiple people from certain network
Jan Shah
@JanShah
Sep 17 2017 22:04
you're right
Garrus Napp
@GarrusNapp
Sep 17 2017 22:04
I'd think that user agent is a good compromise
Jan Shah
@JanShah
Sep 17 2017 22:04
one could also use that and open multiple browsers, but even the ip can be spoofed
Garrus Napp
@GarrusNapp
Sep 17 2017 22:05
also I'm not sure whether this is or isn't in the scope of the project even
Jan Shah
@JanShah
Sep 17 2017 22:05
allowing only one user per vote, I think that is a part of it
Garrus Napp
@GarrusNapp

@JanShah Marketing a niche. For instance, if I wanted to market to restaurants. I know how local SEO works. "Maryland web design". But, how does national SEO work? For instance, if I were to focus on websites for restaurants, but wanted to do SEO nationally

isn't SEO about filling the meta content tag and keywords and hide lots of strong and em tags with keywords ?
like 'movies streaming', 'streaming-2017', 'streaming whatever' 200 and more times
piteto

hi guys. now I'm learning front-end but in the future I want to continue to back-end. So my question is. Should I learn PHP or I just can learn JS and then learn Phyton and do not touch PHP at all? I mean for Full Stack. Thanks.
piteto

Sep 17 2017 23:46
@YariPL If you use node.js for backend, you can focus on JS. No need for python or PHP

I honestly don't know if python can do more than js on the server side
(or vice versa)
