Well i am on. I will try to help if i can. Or, if my brain is still functioning
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 04:48
i'm on, i'm not really big on regex tho
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:49
oh okay
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 04:49
so what's your problem ?
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:50
my stuff is kinda simple for those smarter than thou lol
 for (var i in str) {
        //console.log(i)
        if (str.charAt(0)) {

        } else if (str.charAt(i) === /^[A-Z]/) {
            str.replace(str.charAt(i), " " + str.charAt(i));
        }

    }
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 04:51
@daddycardona you could probably do that in a single regexp
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:51
so for this for loop I want to check if a letter is capital besides the firs character and put a space and then add that charater back to that field lol
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 04:51
i thinkj there's a problem in the js
for var in is used for objects, charAt is for strings
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:52
@heroiczero I could if I knew why this might not work, i tried /[A-Z] as well
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 04:52
or var in works on strings ? i never tested
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 04:53
@daddycardona you need it to be / regexp/g the g is global so dont need the loop
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:53
yes the console.log(i) gives me 0
O dpm
yes I get that but couldn't understand how to do it that way so I figured maybe this way lo
lol
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 04:53
for the if, you should try using .match
what are you trying to do by the way ?
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 04:54
yeah i have no idea what your goal is :confused:
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:54
I am on the Spinal Tap Case challenge
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 04:55
ok let's see what it is and what i did back then, brb
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:55
so my goal for this loop is to put a space in front of the capital leter or replace the capital letter add a space and then put the capital letter back in front of the word
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 04:56
everything should be lowercase from my understanding, so simply use tolowercase
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:56
but I don't need to do that to chartAt(0)
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 04:56
.toLowerCase()
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 04:56
@daddycardona you need to create a space between a cap and lowercase first
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:56
here is the whole code
function spinalCase(str) {

    for (var i in str) {
        //console.log(i)
        if (str.charAt(0)) {

        } else if (str.charAt(i) === /^[A-Z]/) {
            str.replace(str.charAt(i), " " + str.charAt(i));
        }

    }
    console.log(str + ' AFL')

    str = str.toLowerCase();
    str = str.replace(/\s|\_/g, '-');
    console.log(str + ' A2NDR')
    return str;
}

spinalCase('This Is Spinal_Tap');
spinalCase("AllThe-small Things")
spinalCase("thisIsSpinalTap")
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 04:57
@daddycardona i would personally use two replace statements.
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 04:58
oh you need to separate too if there's a capital, i had vforgotten
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 04:58
AFL === "after for loop" ; A2NDR ==== "after 2nd replace";
@daddycardona https://www.regexpal.com/ this might help
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 05:00
oh
rather than ding on a string, why not change it into an array first ?
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:00
@heroiczero what I don't understand too well is the ^ character inside the /[^A-Z] or what it really does outside the /^[A-Z] etc..
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 05:01
for my version i used one regex, /[A-Z]/.test(arr[i])
the rest is basic string equality tests
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:01
I was thinking about doing that but I thought regex was suppose to make this easier lol
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 05:02
btw, don't you risk running into trouble by mutating the element you are iterating through ?
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:02
@Gersho I thought about that but I was hoping that I would not have to lmao
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 05:02
if you had a space or - to your string, you're gonna mess up the indexing
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:02
@daddycardona I have three lines of code. It was simple but but like one liners
@daddycardona you can try https://regexone.com/
@daddycardona this has some nice exercises for regexp https://github.com/P1xt/p1xt-guides/blob/master/topic-guides/regex.md
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 05:03
mine is a boring for i loop on an array, but i've wrote it quite a while ago
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:04
yes this is the point where I usually say to my self screw it because things start getting so confusing and overwhelming because I thought regex was string manipulations and when I see arrays with it I am like WTF
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:05
@daddycardona FCC does not do a good job explaining regexp. Its more complicated. If used correctly, it can be a powerful tool to manipulate strings
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:05
where on fcc does it explain them
I was looking at some videos and the guy was like .replace(regex/g, function) i was like what lol
i even used it for the last exercise and it worked just fine :)
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:06
@daddycardona does not really help
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 05:07
my advice on this, if you try to apply your logic, but instead separate your string into an array or 1 letter per item, you can apply your method without iteration mutation problems (because it you do "D"->"-d" you have added a character, but haven't changed the number of items in the array)
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:08
yes I completed these but to use it and be like str.replace(after first occurance then make a space inf front of the next capital letter lol)
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 25 2017 05:08
by the way since you'll need - in the end, why not add it at this moment ? instead of a space
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:09
well my goal was to make that space then do that because my 2nd replace statement did that already for me
but that too makes sense @Gersho to do it there instead
should I use if statement like if(str.charcodeat(i) >64 && str.etc..)
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:14
@daddycardona you want to make it so it adds a space when [a-z][A-z] when it changes from a lowercase to Uppercase for that for and if statement is my guess
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:14
what I want to do is str==
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:15
@daddycardona currently you are trying to put a space between all your lowercase letters
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:15
str = "acDcdD"
if statement
str now ==="ac Dcd D"
if I could do that the rest of the code would work flawlesly lol
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:17
@daddycardona here look at this code. This is what i meant grouping:
var re = /(\w+)\s(\w+)/;
var str = 'John Smith';
var newstr = str.replace(re, '$2, $1');
console.log(newstr); //displays Smith, John
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:18
yes I read this on W3School and the other MDN Mozilla too
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:18
@daddycardona you see how they switched the last name and first name and added a comma and space
@daddycardona you group using (regexp) the "()" and then you use $1 for the first expression you grouped $2 for the second and so on
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:21
var re =/[A-Z/g;
var str= 'spinalTapMan'
var newStr= str.replace(re, ' $1');// ?
how would I say skip first occurance?
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:22
@daddycardona you need () like (\w+)
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:23
yes but w+ gets all the letters I don't want that I want every capital letter after the first character
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:23
@daddycardona so do it like ([A-Z])
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:25
wouldn that capture 'The' and if the T is the first character I don't want a space in front of it that is what is confusing me
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:26
:point_up: September 25, 2017 1:14 AM @daddycardona so you would want to do it for only when something is in front of it.
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:27
I guess I didn't understand this question the first time so yes
Okay I read that wrong I read it as if I wanted to put a space between every lowercase letter I am sorry yes that was correct man I must be tired lol
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:30
yeah i am too lol :)
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:30
so what was your expression for that ?
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:31
@daddycardona str.replace(/([a-z])([A-Z])/g,'$1 $2');
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona

lol
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:37
@daddycardona just think of grouping like copy and paste
@daddycardona or variables that you stored and you can use again in the final result.
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:38
makes sense but I read this like replace lowercase and upcase letters lol

@daddycardona :wave: haven't crossed paths with you for a while now :D
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:41
yeah the grouping just came to me by doing exercises and just :point_up: September 25, 2017 1:02 AM you learn more stuff to like
@daddycardona if there is a lowercase([a-z]) following a uppercase([A-Z]) then replace with "Group1 Group2" where Group1([a-z]) is $1 and Group2([A-Z]) is $2
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:43
I know I been lazy lol
@DarrenfJ
did you mean a lowercase before an uppercase?
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:44
@daddycardona so there will always be a space between a lowercase and uppercase
@daddycardona yeah before
@daddycardona wow im tired
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:45
lol shit if you would said no I would of been so confused I would of broke my laptop lmao jk
well now I understand why you kept givinb me that example of the other one lol
I basically put it in one string in return statement like
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Sep 25 2017 05:47
are you guys reg-exin'?
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:47
yeah so much fun
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Sep 25 2017 05:47
return str.replace(/([a-z])([A-Z])/g, '$1 $2').toLowerCase().replace(/\s|\_/g, '-');
yes it sucks because there are so many little special ways to make it say what you want but I can't seem to put it in my own language lol

@daddycardona

what am I trying to do should I be using react now instead. Is react any easier than all this stuff or just more complex lol

I'm learning React now, I think you should take a look at ES6 before jumping in React

Other than that, it's not that much complicated than js

Darren
@DarrenfJ
Sep 25 2017 05:54
@daddycardona yah regex is a killer.. i know how to match some stuff but can never figure out quite how to integrate it into js to actually do anything with it.. have to reread the user manual each time, so to speak..
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Sep 25 2017 05:54
@daddycardona yeah but codewars you cant check solution until you do it.
Yeah i always go back to MDN, but if you keep on using it. You start remembering small snippets of it.
Albert Cardona II

hey guys, I know this is sort of off topic, but I just have to say this because I had a weird dream about it. What if there was a Matrix prequel in where we see "Mr. Anderson" in the matrix before he got out? Remember in the first movie where Agent Smith said he was living a double life as a hacker? What if in this prequel, we got to see what he did as a hacker before he got out? In my dream, it was almost as if I were watching this movie (not the original, but the idea that came to me). In my dream, Mr. Anderson was drinking coffee and reading a newspaper in a coffee shop, where he sees a young teen delivering packages on a bike. The teen is very clumsy, to the point where he's pissing people off and causing a mess. Mr. Anderson approaches the guy after and tells him that he's not very good with this delivery thing and asks him what he wants to do with his life. The teen said that he was previously studying comp sci, but that he dropped out. Mr. Anderson asks why doesnt he go back? The teen says that he could never go back and that he got expelled for doing something he shouldnt do on the computer. Mr. Anderson asks to meet with him later on at his apartment. When they meetup there, Mr. Anderson starts teaching him how to hack and code, and that everything in the world is essentially just code and was showing him how to manipulate this and that. That's when I woke up lol

Can I get some help?
I am doing the symmetric difference challenge, and I am not getting the results that I want
function countCheck(object){

  //array -> Array that will only contain elements that have a value of 1 and be returned in the end
  var keys = Object.keys(object);
  var array = [];

  //Check each of the keys of the object, if they have a value of 1, push them in the array.
  for(var i = 0; i < keys.length; i++){
    if(object[i] == 1){
      array.push(keys[i]);
    }
  }

  return array;
}

function sym(args) {

  //Final array to be returned
  var finalArr = [];

  //Flatten the Arguments Array
  var flattenedArr = Object.values(arguments).reduce(
  function(a, b) {
    return a.concat(b);
  },
  []
);

  //Count how many instances of every element is in the flattened array
  var countedElements = flattenedArr.reduce(function (allElements, element) {
  if (element in allElements) {
    allElements[element]++;
  }
  else {
    allElements[element] = 1;
  }
  return allElements;
}, {});

  //Apply the countCheck function to finalArr
  finalArr = countCheck(countedElements);

  console.log(finalArr);
  return finalArr;
}

sym([1, 2, 3], [5, 2, 1, 4]);

for some reason, for the given example, the result is ['4', '5'] instead of ['3', '4', '5']

It seems kind of abstract to me

Hello everyone, I am working on Caesars Cipher exercise and I encountered a problem that doesn't makes sense for me.

In this line if(firstValue.charCodeAt(0) >= 65 && firstValue.charCodeAt(0) <= 77), I get an error: Uncaught TypeError: firstValue.charCodeAt is not a function. But when I changed the logical operator to this if(firstValue.charCodeAt(0) >= 65 || firstValue.charCodeAt(0) <= 77), I don't get an error. Why is that? || and && are both logical operators and should result the same thing.

  array.reduce(function (firstValue, currentVal, index, array){
//       console.log(currentVal);
//       console.log("Value: " + currentVal + " Current code: " + currentVal.charCodeAt(0));

      if(index < 2) {
        console.log("here!: " + firstValue.charCodeAt(0));
        if(firstValue.charCodeAt(0) >= 65 && firstValue.charCodeAt(0) <= 77)
//           console.log(firstValue.charCodeAt(0)+19);
          newArray.push(firstValue.charCodeAt(0)+13);
        else if(firstValue.charCodeAt(0) >= 78 && firstValue.charCodeAt(0) <= 90)
          newArray.push(firstValue.charCodeAt(0)-13);
      }
      if(currentVal.charCodeAt(0) >= 65 && currentVal.charCodeAt(0) <= 77) {
        newArray.push(currentVal.charCodeAt(0)+19);
      } else if (currentVal.charCodeAt(0) >= 78 && currentVal.charCodeAt(0) <= 90) {
          newArray.push(firstValue.charCodeAt(0)-13);
      }
      return newArray;

i'll take a look at it real quick
Are you sure it wasn't just a typo? seems kind of strange to me as well
Ok so I am having some trouble with the reduce method as well, but I think I might know what is going wrong
Basically, firstValue being the accumulator, accumulates the return values of the callback
in your case, the accumulator is firstValue

So probably , what is happening is, for the first iteration of this reduce method, only one of those arguments apply, therefore resulting in the change that you want to happen actually happening, but in the case that the if statement is not run, the accumulator changes in the end of the iteration to something
What I just wrote is really confusing but I hope you get the point :sweat_smile:
So in a kind of way, in the case that the if doesn't run, the accumulator "breaks"

why isnt my function working?

So the accumulator cannot break and has to continue adding every time?

That was my guess, but I could be totally wrong though

@wnghero id and prop are variables and need [id][prop]
@quickspeedy nvm
@quickspeedy You can start your accumulater as "" and just + the changed letters on the end (this way no join is needed at the end).

I thought this would be an easy one. I have to return the index where the argument will fit in the array. I think I'm close. Is a for loop the way to go here?
function getIndexToIns(arr, num) {
  // Find my place in this sorted array.
  arr.sort(function(a, b) {
  return a - b;
});
  for (var i = 0; i < arr.length; i++); {
    if (arr[i] >= num) {
      return i;
    }
    else return arr.length;
  }

}

getIndexToIns([2, 5, 10], 15);

@mbmontana You have if return else return which prevents looping.
The return from the else part has to be after the loop checks all the numbers.

Hi there. Trying to get a grid using Bootsrap, but my text isn't lining up side by side the way I expect.
<head>
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-md-6">yo ho ho</div>
<div class="col-md-6">yo ho ho</div>
<div class="col-md-6">yo ho ho</div>
</div>
</div>
My result: yo ho ho
yo ho ho
yo ho ho

@pkcode2 you have 3 x col-md-6

@pkcode2 It should look like:

<head>
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
  <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/twitter-bootstrap/3.3.7/css/bootstrap.min.css">
</head>

<body>
  <div class="container-fluid">
    <div class="row">
      <div class="col-md-4">yo ho ho</div>
      <div class="col-md-4">yo ho ho</div>
      <div class="col-md-4">yo ho ho</div>
    </div>
  </div>
</body>

Don't forget <body> tags and a closing </head> tag.

the col-md-4 is if you want 3 on one line - but with md, your screen needs to be at least 768px wide

your code looks really confusing im trying to find something that's creating an issue there but its not behing easy
the easier way to have 2 items align
is create a parent div container
and inside it 2 divs with width of 50%
and using display:inline-block
