what's wrong with setTimeout in a loop ?

try this in a for i loop

        setTimeout(function(){
          $("#green").attr('class', 'green-on');
          document.getElementById("audio-green").play();
          setTimeout(function() {
            $("#green").attr('class', 'green-off');
          }, 1000*0.8);
        },(i+1)*1000);

(it will trigger green-on at delay(i+1)*1000ms and green-off 800ms later after green on)

Hi guys! I’m working on the “truncate a string” challenge. I’ve been running my codes and my first if statement often overrides the 2nd one. Here’s my code:

function truncateString(str, num) {
  // Clear out that junk in your trunk

  var endOfStr= "...";

  var i =
      str.length;

  var beGin=
      "..."+str;

  if (i>num) {
    return beGin.slice(3,[num]).concat(endOfStr);
  }
  else if (i>num && (num<=3)) {
  return str.slice(0,[num].concat(endOfStr));
  }

}

truncateString("Absolutely Longer", 2);

Can anyone please check what’s wrong with my codes ? Thanks in advance!

@piteto
Sep 26 2017 01:51
@crystalclea num should not be [num] and in your else if, you're missing a closing parenthesis before .concat(endOfStr)
the other issue is that return will always exit the function immediately without running more code, so when your first if is true, the second one won't be evaluated.

sup. public class Scope1 {
private int one = 9, two = 7, total;
public void add(){
one = 4;
total = one + two;
two = 8;
}
public void print(){ out.println(total); }

public static void main(String args[]){

the answer is 11 but i don't know the explanation why its 11.

Sep 26 2017 05:15
oh that's a fun one
so part 1 is figuring out how the sequence works and building that math

i havent been able to make this thing work out... my head is getting fried over callback functions...why isnt this code showing me "number exists" even though data is clearly going to the databse
                    var input = Apperyio('result');

                    var word = input.val();

                    var number = word.match(/\d{10}/);

                    var res = parseInt(number);
                    var word = input.val();

                    var number = word.match(/\d{10}/);

                    var res = parseInt(number);

                    var numbers = [0753741631, 4958372834];

                    function sendData() {
                     $.post( "/i3c/app/app.php", { res: res} );
                       }

                    for (var i = 0; i < numbers.length; i++){

                    if (res != numbers[i]){

                    sendData();
                    }
                        else{

        alert("number exists");
                    }
                    }
i use the very number in the array....o753741631..but i do not get number exists
anyone?
korzo
@korzo
Sep 26 2017 13:50
@akodiaemma 0753741631 is 128959385
0 at the beginning of numeric literal means it's octal unless second number is 8 or 9. Then 0 is ignored
Emmanuel Akodia

@korzo what would you do... to add the integers to an array
korzo
@korzo
Sep 26 2017 14:00

@akodiaemma
result of parseInt('0753741631') is 753741631
parseInt('0753741631') !== 0753741631

I would say store numbers as strings and compare them either as strings or res != parseInt(numbers[i])

} else {

for (var i = 0; i < n; i ++) {

 generate (n-1, str);

anyone familiar with d3 and SVG elements?
If I append text to my legend element (which is a a sub element of SVG), the text does nto show anywhere (perhaps it is behind it, I tried using z-index and other methods to make it appear)
but if I append text directly to SVG it shows, however sometimes the text is behind the svg element (unless I change the x/y coord

"When I look at the vibrancy of work being done and the boundaries being pushed in data visualization five years ago and compare it to today, it just doesn't seem to compare. Major consulting firms have reduced or entirely eliminated their data visualization units, here in the Valley some of the leading tech companies have scrapped internal data visualization teams. More abstractly, I feel like I hear from more and more dissatisfied people in the field, either in their personal career trajectories, or their lack of enthusiasm for the conferences and conference topics.
Data visualization can't really die, because even spreadsheets are data visualization, but the kind of exciting, ground-breaking work that tries to push forward the ability to communicate about complex phenomena can be overtaken by a more simplistic, more conservative structure that leaves us making bar charts and spreadsheets and scatterplots. When I wrote about professional dissatisfaction, there were a few people--prominent theorists like Stephen Few but also good friends of mine--who argued that data visualization isn't even a profession, just a skill, and I suppose my concern is that were it reduced to an ancillary skill, we'd see just that ossification of the practice.

there's 2 type of companies on this, those that are truly tech and it is their main aim, those where tech is a mean, not an end (those don't tend to understand how important it is to put money in safeguards, good work, backups, etc etc)

Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Sep 26 2017 23:16
@knight2 you mean like a text adventure?
do you guys think the color changes are cool or, looks broken?
@knight2 if you mean like in java or somthing, ive done that before, unity makes things faster, but yea the file size sucks

@thekholm80 managed to get it working with
svg.selectAll('.legend') .data([0].concat(colorScale.quantiles())) .enter() .append("text") .text((d) => d) .attr("x", (d, i) => 67 + 28 * i) .attr("y", 35); strange that it didn't append the text when I just appended it to the original legend statement..... and it is missing the last number in the array
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Sep 26 2017 23:20
that is strange
knight2
@knight2
Sep 26 2017 23:20

Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 26 2017 23:22
@ericmiller777 a few rules
they accept only one block of code
return is assumed
the arguments are in () before the arrow
knight2
@knight2
Sep 26 2017 23:22
kkk giving up on this struggle. can't wait to leave SVG's in the dusty bin
@Gersho you can do more than one block with {}
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Sep 26 2017 23:23
@gersho so they just return a value?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Sep 26 2017 23:23

Hi fellas! I have cleared upto the basic algorithm level and JASON and AJAX code was actually not really making any sense to me but clearing those waypoints was literally a matter of copy/paste if you know what I mean. Its a shame but I am on intermediate project level onto Quote Machine now. I don't understand how to make an algorithm that generates infinite (or perhaps tons of, if infinite sounds an exaggeration) quotes copying them from some other websource. Any tips?
Gersho
@Gersho
Sep 26 2017 23:58

@Donnie-D you don't generate multiple quote, you generate a new one when the user asks for one, using a quote API

also it's ok to copy some parts of code make sense of it and include it in your code, but if you copy a whole bunch you don't understand, there's not much point
