Albert Cardona II

Gersho
@Gersho

if you reworked your code, you can't say you haven't done anything
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 04:44
well the funny thing the sum of all primes basically said you probably giong to cheat so i did lol
function truncateString(str, num) {
    // Clear out that junk in your trunk
    var strLen = str.length;
    var newNum = 0;
    var newStr = '';

    if (num >= strLen) {
        newStr = str;
    } else if (strLen > num && num > 4) {
        newNum = num - 3;
        newStr = str.slice(0, newNum);
        newStr += '...';
    } else if (num === 4) {
        newStr = str.slice(0, num) + '...';
    } else if (num < 4) {
        newStr = str.slice(0, num) + '...';
    }

    // console.log(newStr)
    return newStr;
}
truncateString("A-tisket a-tasket A green and yellow basket", 4);
this works but I know there gots to be a better way to do this and your correct @Gersho
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 04:45
depends what you definition of better is, some prefer readability, other ressource optimisation, others number of line, etc
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Oct 02 2017 04:46
thats good as is i think
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 04:47
you have some unnecessary stuff but it's not as bad as you think it is
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 04:47
first of all, optimizing this and using less code is what I am talking about and then i can probably make sure it is passing a string lol
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Oct 02 2017 04:47
you could use some regexp if you want
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 04:47

heroiczero
@heroiczero
Oct 02 2017 04:47
to try something different
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 04:48
Like what @Gersho and and your right @longnt80 and @heroiczero I was trying to use regex but that did not work so I went back to this lol
heroiczero
@heroiczero
Oct 02 2017 04:48
better could also be optimize a code so it takes less processing power
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 04:48
function truncateString(str, num) {
if (num>=str.length){
  return str;
}

if (num<=3){
  str = str.slice(0,num)+"...";
  return str;
}

str = str.slice(0,num-3)+"...";
return str;
}

Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 04:50
@daddycardona you had to write code on paper too?
at the end, I asked the interviewer, and he said my js was good
they also gave questions about html, css, jquery
but there wasn't enough time so we just skipped to the algorithm part
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 04:52

Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 04:52

employer: 1. Can you name two programming paradigms important for JavaScript app developers?
me: please wait a minute while i google what paradigm means please ?
Red flags:
No clue what a paradigm is, no mention of prototypal oo or functional programming.
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 05:40
lmao isn't that same backwards as forwards
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 05:40
as a person who English is not native and learning JS in English only, it's equally confusing when they ask me about these terms both in Vietnamese and English
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 05:41
i am native to english first language and I am still confused lmao
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 05:41
well i've just read a paragraph, and my reaction was: "i don't know half of those term and i have no idea what you're talking about"
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 05:41
I get frustrated trying to understand this shit honestly
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 05:42
JavaScript is a multi-paradigm language, supporting imperative/procedural programming along with OOP (Object-Oriented Programming) and functional programming. JavaScript supports OOP with prototypal inheritance.
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 05:42
lmao what?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 05:42
today the interviewer gave me a question which written in Vietnamese using terms in Vietnamese
and I got lost
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 05:42
you was like say that in english lmao
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 05:43
lol
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 05:44
I don't get math that well so all this shit they asking me to do is like what, I want to be a front end developer is this really going to prepare me for that?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 05:44
I'm afraid that if I worked along side with those devs, and they kept saying those Vietnamese terms
it would be like learning JS again
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 05:44
but really, the 1 of https://medium.com/javascript-scene/10-interview-questions-every-javascript-developer-should-know-6fa6bdf5ad95 already gives me an impression of an interview where i'll end up looking really out of place
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 05:45
LOL nah bro once you learn the terms and translate them to JS then it would be easier for you
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 05:46
I want to be a front end developer is this really going to prepare me for that?
I think front end developer is a broad term
at least these days
oh in that handbook they also describe the roles of front end devs
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 05:47
sure that "webmaster" is a thing of the past
even in today interview, they posted the job as Front End Dev but they said that they would like everybody to become fullstack
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 05:48
would love to be engineer but i'm clearly not there yet
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 05:49
I think you're correct on saying that @Gersho it has changed a lot
so I get why they say it is a paradigms @Gersho
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 05:53
@Gersho btw, I changed my fcc leaderboard to use both methods:
  • Load the API as user request
  • Cache the data so next time the user request, it doesn't have to load again

@daddycardona

so I get why they say it is a paradigms

paradigms is like philosophy?

Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 05:55
i'd say a "way of doing things", in a more global sense than the "method" term
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 05:55
basically it can be used as different styles of programming based on the different types of programming ways like @longnt80 said.
but I like my shit broken down in barny terms or kid terms lol
JavaScript is a multi-paradigm language - meaning it does not have just one ideology. C for example is strictly Procedure oriented, Java, on the other hand is purely object oriented but JavaScript is a mixture of Object Oriented, Functional and even imperative. So no matter what is your preferred way of writing programs, JavaScript allows you to write programs the way you want to. That being said, the Object Oriented behavior of JavaScript stands out and from version 6 it will become a more complete Object Oriented language.
this was how I wanted to post it don'e know why i did that lol
I don't know about you but this makes me happy even though I don't really know the difference or procedure and object oriented lmao
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 05:59
yeah, I've been reading about these term but still don't get it much
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 05:59
the fact that i don't know the difference makes me unhappy
uncertain would be a better term maybe
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 06:00
I mean, do I have to choose between these styles?
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 06:00
i don't know what those terms means so i can't answer ^^
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 06:00
yes you do I understand object oriented though because I get what that means. It is like a car as the main object then the doors and engine and engine pieces are differetn pieces
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 06:01
but can I combine both OOP and FP?
people say OOP is very important in web dev
but I haven't have the experience to see that
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Oct 02 2017 06:03
evening fCC
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 06:03
so like a function means functional in JS but then you have an object which can be a bunch of things lets just say a phone list like
var car = {type:"Fiat", model:"500", color:"white"};
and @longnt80 of course you do it every api call

Oct 02 2017 06:12
@GitHub-Henry es6 is great
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 02 2017 06:12
es6 offers some nice react stuff (you can avoid all the function binding with fat arrows)
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 02 2017 06:12
it converts es6 to 'regular javascript'
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Oct 02 2017 06:13
why would you want that ? why not just use es6?
or is it for backwards compatibility
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 02 2017 06:13
not all browsers use es6
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 02 2017 06:13
@daddycardona es6 offers more features to js which can make your code shorter and more readable

BrewCoffeeSplash
@BrewCoffeeSplash
Oct 02 2017 08:16
Well based on a user standpoint, I wouldn't even know I could click on it
and not everyone is dexterous as others
@AminuSufi585 but, you could give the F and C a separate id and target that then
instead of targetting the whole #temp

@NAVANEETH1 vs code is much lighter weight than eclipse - at its base it is a code editor but with lots of extensions that move it towards an IDE.

Hi
I have an issue with a website I am trying to develop, I have some issues regarding the hamburgerbutton using bootstrap.
When I make the site smaller, and click on the hamburger button, the button opens and then instantly collapses. I know it has something to do with which bootstrap version min.js I am using. But If I change it and make it work, then the slider does not seem to work, so it seems like they are dependent on eachoter.
Anyone ? :)

@nicolaimagnussen - make sure that you are using the same version of Bootstrap CSS and JS. I would say to stick with V3 at this point, since you find most lessons and examples with that, and V4 has many changes that you would have to make sure you were using properly if you are accustomed to using V3. The example template that they have on the bootstrap site works perfectly if you have not used that as a starting point, it's a good way to go...
@nicolaimagnussen - if you want to post a URL to your site, if it's accessible on the web, we could take a look, too...
