how can i get my react code to start when i load my index.html instead of it doing the local:3000 thing
does it have to run from a server i dont understand
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 05 2017 02:59
document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", function(event) {
you mean that ?
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:01
idk i think i gotta reset my project or somthing
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:02
@ericmiller777 copy the js files: react.js and react-dom.js
link them to the index.html
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 05 2017 03:02
i didn't run into any issue using the above and obviously ReactDOM.render, but that was on codepen so maybe i've missed a step
what errors are you getting ?
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:04
i have this
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:04
@Gersho I think @ericmiller777 wanted to run react statically, without a development server
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:04
ReactDOM.render(
<h1>Hello, world!</h1>,
document.getElementById('root')
);
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 05 2017 03:05
i'll assume you have an element with that ID ?
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:05
im index.html has this

<div id="app"></div>

<script src="app.js"></script>

Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 05 2017 03:05
well shouldn't your div's id be "root" ?
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:05
does it have to be root?
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 05 2017 03:05
and you need to load react and stuff
no it doesn't have, but if you call root in your render, it's gotta look for it
(i name mine react-anchor usually)
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:06
ReactDom.render(

Gersho

Oct 05 2017 03:07
i want to Render <h1>Test</h1> in "app"
you need to import in the html too (like jquery)
Eric Miller

Oct 05 2017 03:12

Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:12
react included its own index.html
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:12
here's the html file from the doc:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
  <head>

    <title>Hello World</title>
    <script src="https://unpkg.com/react@16/umd/react.development.js"></script>

Oct 05 2017 03:13

so i would need to run a server?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:14

Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:14
if i have the react files local?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:14
you write in that file
<script type="text/babel">

      ReactDOM.render(
        <h1>Hello, world!</h1>,
        document.getElementById('root')
      );

    </script>
inside these script is where you write your react app
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 05 2017 03:15
since in the end, you host on github, it would be better i think to use remote hosting for libraries
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:16
I see
whats the difference in useing the cdn and useing the local ffiles?
am i missing out on anything?
Gersho

Oct 05 2017 03:17
maybe, i don't know what's your knowledge on http requests, networking, stuff like that

Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:18

local:3000
it loaks fine
but
i cant load it by clicking the index.html

Oct 05 2017 03:19
are you using create-react-app?
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:19
yes
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:19
create-react-app you have to run by a server
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:19
i see
okay
so the local server way is the only way to load it
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:20
because the index.html in there is just a placeholder
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:20
thank you guys i was thinking about this all wrong
thats what i thought it might be i just thought i was crazy

why do all the tutorials i see
want me to learn
webpack
should i?
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 05 2017 03:21
don't ask me, i'm having trouble balancing my learning properly lately ^^ only 24hours in a day
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:21
webpaack is a tool to help with your workflow
you should learn it
but for now
if you only want to experience react then just use create-react-app
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 05 2017 03:22
is that a dev framework ?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:23
it already has webpack underneath
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:23
i mean
then id have a problem hosting it to github right?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:23
@Gersho webpack is a tool
@ericmiller777 no
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:23
as a github page?
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:24
but how do you start the server?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:24
this is created with create-react-app and hosted on github
Gersho
@Gersho
Oct 05 2017 03:24
no, you'll only have to point to a place with reactand stuff

webpack is a tool

i meant create-react-app

Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:24
@ericmiller777 what server?
locally?
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:25
idk anymore
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:25
you already start the server locally with npm start
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:25
yes
but how would that work on a github page?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:25
ok
after you finish develop your app locally
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:26
then you "build" it or somthing?
Long Nguyen
@longnt80
Oct 05 2017 03:26
you will have a node script to build and deploy the final files as static files and push that to github repo
Eric Miller
@ericmiller777
Oct 05 2017 03:26
i see
okay
thank you guys

I am trying to understand how to get out of an array I was using arguments but that didn't help the steamroller challenge
function steamrollArray(arr) {
    // I'm a steamroller, baby
    var na = arguments;
    for (var i in na) {
        console.log(na[i])

    return na;
}

steamrollArray([1, [2],[3,[[4]]]]);

oh man that is going to suck for me then lol

Hi guys!! I’m working on the random quote generator. I’m having some problems with the alignment of the text. I want the quotes to overlay the blank note on my typewriter image and be in the center. It works when I display it on debug mode on my mac. But when I check in on my mobile, the quotes are all over the place. Does anyone know how to fix that problem? I’ve been mulling over and testing it for many hours…

@faraco Your regex should not match "42 42 42 42".
Momozor
@momozor
Oct 05 2017 15:49
Hmm..since it wants only 3 set of numbers and nothing more nor less, I would make sure the regex only make sure it checks 3 set only.
I would add caret and dolar sign to ensure that.
/^(\d+)\s\1\s\1$/
pocahontas123

Oct 05 2017 15:50
it work but i'm not sure why

@pocahontas123
Oct 05 2017 15:53
But why i have to use the ^
Momozor
@momozor
Oct 05 2017 15:53
so when you add ^$, the regex will return true if only you have 3 set of digits in the string.
  • if there is more than 3 set, false
  • if there less than 3 set, false
  • if no digits found, false
  • if no whitespace at the right place, false
pocahontas123

pocahontas123

Oct 05 2017 15:59
okay
let pwRegex = /(?=\w{6,})(?=\d{2})/g;
Error with "bana12" and "abc123"
Momozor
@momozor
Oct 05 2017 16:06
@pocahontas123 okay lets look at what your regex doing first.
Your first capture () shows that you are trying to match word 6 or greater.
pocahontas123
@pocahontas123
Oct 05 2017 16:08
"that are greater than 5 characters long"
so it's 6, or greater
Momozor
@momozor
Oct 05 2017 16:10
okay. Then second capture, you are matching only 2 words it seems. This capture basically neglects words, which mean false whenever you try to use it to test string with words mixed.
pocahontas123
@pocahontas123
Oct 05 2017 16:11
it can have 2 number at the end
and have two consecutive digits.
Momozor
@momozor
Oct 05 2017 16:11
I think it should be (?=\D*(\d){2}), since the front have letters, right?
pocahontas123
@pocahontas123
Oct 05 2017 16:12
i don't know
Momozor
@momozor
Oct 05 2017 16:12
Give it a try.
\D* means other than digits, which includes letters.
pocahontas123
@pocahontas123
Oct 05 2017 16:13
yes, everything expect digit
It work but i don't really understand it (?=\D*(\d){2})
\D and \d are two meaning
opposite
why we have both

Hello.
Jamie R. Robillard Sr.
@JamieRRobillardSr
Oct 05 2017 18:03

@MluerDemon I might also add that if this is not something being done on codepen or a platform where you cannot add files to then I would consider using an external style sheet. That way when you edit the file your whole site gets updated and you do not have to edit the <style> … </style> element of every page.

This would go in the head section:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href=“css/main.css”>

You should rename css/main.css (note: the first css is a directory name) to the name of your style sheet. You do not need and should not have any html in an external style sheet so if your style above was in an external style sheet it would be:

/* main.css */
h2 {
  color: blue;
}

Take care!
