@sjames1958gm - re: :point_up: October 25, 2017 7:46 PM - I agree, it's so easy to get shot down there on stackoverflow... but they get like a 1000 questions a minute or something, so maybe people just get irritated? :)
@thekholm80 - that sounds like a good strategy for stackoverflow....

@Jaquavieon if I try to open what should be your home page on freecode camp, I see this message at the top of the page: We couldn't find a page for /Jaquavieon - if you look at your freecodecamp home page, what is your URL? Perhaps you are on the beta site?

Oct 26 2017 04:05 UTC

Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 04:07 UTC
@daddycardona @longnt80 fur stays one length and fall of, hair grows and grows and grow, so it needs to be cut

Oct 26 2017 04:20 UTC
@longnt80 i'd like to scub dive in the coral reefs somewhere around Vietnam and Timor Sea, its where the Pacific flows into the Indian so it's full of life
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 04:26 UTC
yes it is @GitHub-Henry and there is also great scuba diving in Okinawa too many people get their license there for cheaper than amercia but I don't like the ocean or those breathing things either LOL
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 04:29 UTC
@daddycardona i want really really want to, but give it second thought, cuz Fukashima is not fixed, so it still puts nuclear waste every day into the Pacifc, remember that the next time you think about shrimp, Alaskan Salmon, Tuna, etc
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 04:30 UTC
I don't eat shrimp lol but I do eat a lot of sushi when I get sushi LOL ;)
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 04:32 UTC
@daddycardona just remember Fukashima's not fixed, so how much nuclear waste is going into the food you eat from the ocean, I LOVE sushi also, but then...
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 04:33 UTC
you gonna die of something pumping gas can give you cancer it's all good these days lol

Albert Cardona II

well i am fat already but just look pregnant lol

Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 04:37 UTC
LOL I am a retired Marine so I lay on my bed and look at my 55inc television most of the day computer also connected to it so wireless mouse and keyboard 55 inch monitor lmao
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 04:41 UTC
@daddycardona when I got a 30" screen i thought, to much, now i use 3 and a 17" on the side, and a lap top for misc, all on my desk
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 04:41 UTC
lol
you must edit pictures or graphics or something with that
most people that use that type of format tvs or monitors usually on photoshop LOL
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 04:43 UTC
some times, but you'd be amazed, you start using monitors and you find a use for them
just need the video cards to support it
and cables, long cables
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 04:43 UTC
LOL

Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 04:46 UTC
@artbohr some times I take lessons and have 1 mon for that, 2 mon for coding examples, 3 mon browser outpout, and devtools, 4th usually streams, backgound stuff, and has access to my main computer cuz all my other stuff is done on vms

quick question: What does express sesssions do? Will it allow for me to easily grab data from a database and place it on html pages?
artbohr
@artbohr
Oct 26 2017 04:49 UTC
@GitHub-Henry well, if it's for additional utility it's great, as long as it's not watching series/movies along the work, so you end up doing nothing of both xD
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 04:50 UTC
@artbohr i have to admit, i did think it was over kill to have more than 2 monitors, until i did
artbohr
@artbohr
Oct 26 2017 04:50 UTC
@GitHub-Henry well, 2 monitors are great, I miss having two :D three seems an overkill as a first though, indeed
@GitHub-Henry you never know until you try, haha
Henry
@GitHub-Henry

@daddycardona you really don't think you could use them, until you do and you like he set up
i'm taking a class on mongodb and nodejs, so i'm hitting the ebooks

what is mongodb
never mind its database lol

Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:45 UTC
I just need to understand what else should I learn with Javascript
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:45 UTC
@daddycardona get good with CSS, SCSS
Flexbox
Front End Cert
Then work on backend
take Mongo Database courses here and there since they are only offered sparatically through the year
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:47 UTC
I am trying to understand what am I doing with the front end isn't react frontend framework
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:48 UTC
React in high demand right now, learn it
but you probably should do the other stuff first
Good JS, CSS, SCSS, Flexbox skills are essential
for a front end person
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:50 UTC
like what so far I am trying to get good at javascript but everything javascrtip seems obsolete for front end from what i am hearing like php is even better than just js alone
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:50 UTC
Gulp, Webpack
JS alone is like saying you'll have rice for dinner
It needs to be part of a set of skills
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:51 UTC
but i like rice for dinner lmao
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:51 UTC
just rice, nothing else
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:51 UTC
ketchup lol
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:51 UTC
no spices, nothing but rice
bachelor meal?
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:52 UTC
i know what you mean i am a clown sometimes lol
so you saying get good with css but why flexbox i get scss or sass
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:53 UTC
cuz when you want a website to 'look' good you'll need those skills
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:53 UTC
yes but i have never used flexbox on a personal site
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:53 UTC
JS moves things, CSS, SCSS, Flexbox make things look good
it's better than most alternatives, and it's a standard
Dhaval
@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 05:53 UTC
Flexbox is still not supported by many browsers
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:53 UTC
really did not kow the standard part
Dhaval
@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 05:53 UTC
u will need to have fallback for flexbox
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:54 UTC
so all these algorythyms i am learning where would I use them in real life as far as fcc challenges go
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:55 UTC
even IE Edge support flex
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:56 UTC
IE supports stuff lol
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:56 UTC

Oct 26 2017 05:56 UTC
oh okay makes sense
Dhaval
@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 05:56 UTC
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:56 UTC
now that we on the thinking part how would i use typeof in an if statment?
Dhaval
@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 05:57 UTC
look at the version of the browsers
only the latest one supports it
and u will be suprised to know how many people do actually update their browser
especially those in the offices
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 05:58 UTC
@Dhavalc2012 isn't that what vendor prefixes are for
use vendor prefixes with flex, for the older browsers, I use Gulp
Dhaval
@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 05:59 UTC
yeah but they have partial supports
means u cant use all the properties of the flexbox
u need to always add fallback
no matter what
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 05:59 UTC
Dhaval
@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 06:00 UTC
typeof is evaluated with boolean value
look at MDN
u will get all the typeof values
n expression
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 06:01 UTC
@Dhavalc2012 I see what you are saying, depends on what your manager tells you to do
if you need to code fall back code, code it
if you need to support ie11 from 2013, support it
Dhaval
@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 06:02 UTC
well u should always use compass or a script from github
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 06:03 UTC
@Dhavalc2012 i heard compass is dead
Dhaval
@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 06:03 UTC

Oct 26 2017 06:03 UTC
yeah not much of a support
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 06:03 UTC

@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 06:03 UTC
it iwll be like this
typeof (numbervar) == "number"
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 06:04 UTC
that is what I put
Dhaval
@Dhavalc2012
Oct 26 2017 06:04 UTC
number is in quotes
not without quotes
typeof returns string
not object
Albert Cardona II

@daddycardona the mongo database basics class only uses mongo db

just making sure because it ask me to pick a platform lol
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 06:34 UTC
@daddycardona after you learn node.js they have a class that integrates node.js and mongo db
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 06:35 UTC
okay cool i just put other lol
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 06:35 UTC
@daddycardona fyi you should learn node.js, pug and express before you take the node.js & mongo db integration class, cuz they assume you know pug, and express
really, they assume you know a template language like pug, i use pug
Albert Cardona II
Oct 26 2017 06:36 UTC
i have never heard of pug lol
or if i did i forgot
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Oct 26 2017 06:36 UTC
once you learn pug, you'll love it, at least i did
seems like a lot, it is, that's why full stack developers can earn big bucks
at least at good companies
put passport.js in your back pocket, you'll need it eventually
Albert Cardona II

there is quite a learning curve though

I am like what am I really learning should I try something esle. I have the time now so learn it. Like I can make simple pages but this here is confusing so much else to know
I once met a man and he said master c# then you will be just fine in anything you need to do because you can do it all through c#

@daddycardona i think you are doing it in the right order, for front end, JS first, CSS, SCSS, then Flexbox
C# is for backend .net

he did backend stuff
that's what C# does

I think you can use c# for database stuff if I remember correctly

there is a thing called linq that can do basic database queries in c#, basic crud
stuff developers need to make apps work, but not to much more

real database management for sql server would be done by a dba using sql server management studio, c# linq is for developers to access the database and make apps work

What does the #getMessage mean in the line $("#getMessage").on("click", function(){ ? is that the command? when someone clicks, get message? rscales02 @rscales02 Oct 26 2017 13:52 UTC #getMessage is targeting the HTML element with id="getMessage" also, for jQuery I think the syntax you are looking for is $('#getMessage').click(function(){ //do something});

The line was copied from one of the challenges on FCC.

@MWBauer getJSON this call needs to be inside the function function(position) or position will be undefined.
$.getJSON has a callback function that will return the weather data. Ginger @GingerChew Oct 26 2017 15:20 UTC @kbaig when I click the sign up button, it doesn't stay orange, it reverts to white. as long as it has 'focus' it should probably be orange. Kaz Baig @kbaig Oct 26 2017 15:27 UTC @GingerChew hmmm not able to replicate this @GingerChew Are you talking about if you click it and then take the cursor off the button? Ginger @GingerChew Oct 26 2017 15:29 UTC yeah! if you mess with the :focus psuedoclass you can see when it applies Kaz Baig @kbaig Oct 26 2017 15:29 UTC well if I click it and then take my cursor off of it, that would mean I've either signed up or there was an issue In either case, it would redirect or refresh So it prob shouldn't be orange after taking cursor off of it, no? Stephen James @sjames1958gm Oct 26 2017 15:35 UTC @MWBauer Both .on and .click are ok - because "click" is used so much they provided a function that does what .on("click", function() {}); does Ginger @GingerChew Oct 26 2017 15:37 UTC hmmm, true, but if you have a disability that won't let you use a mouse, you'll have to select it with an assistive device in that case, the focus asset will act as hover does for a mouse Marc @MWBauer Oct 26 2017 15:38 UTC @sjames1958gm :wave: Morning! Ginger @GingerChew Oct 26 2017 15:39 UTC cause right now, if I tab to the sign up button, it stays white and has a checkered border around the word Stephen James @sjames1958gm Oct 26 2017 15:39 UTC @MWBauer Hey Marc @MWBauer Oct 26 2017 15:40 UTC How ya' doin'? Stephen James @sjames1958gm Oct 26 2017 15:49 UTC d = substr(str.length - target.length) -- select the string starting target.length letters from the end Kaz Baig @kbaig Oct 26 2017 15:50 UTC @GingerChew try refresh again? hehe wait are you not on chrome I just opened it in moz and see what you're saying Ginger @GingerChew Oct 26 2017 15:51 UTC okay, lemme try chrome yep! The other option like I mentioned before is to use the :focus pseudo class, and then just apply the same :hover styling to it, that would then be the styling for all browsers (i think) From a styling aspect, it matters, from a ux experience, not really. If so, return sum of argument with x[0] Ken Haduch @khaduch Oct 26 2017 21:57 UTC @daddycardona - what you need to do is return a function that will receive your second argument - the addTogether(2) part will have enclosed the first argument 2 within its state - "closure", so you just have to take in the second argument and do the addition and return the final result. You're motivated to learn and I'm sitting here reading reddit Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:11 UTC recursion, callbacks and closures could all kiss my ass lol i am motivated more to understand I prefer videos than reading I don't get what I am reading half the time unless i read it like 15 times lol Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:13 UTC I get a lot more out of udemy courses than i do just reading stuff having someone talk it through really helps me korzo @korzo Oct 26 2017 22:14 UTC @daddycardona Lucky you. I can only read code with my 5 seconds attention span :) Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:14 UTC yes I feel you and especially when they break it down better then the books using real world code Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:14 UTC you should look for local meetup groups we have a ton here and i've learned a lot from them Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:15 UTC i got adhd and ptsd and understand how you feel @korzo and I have @thekholm80 don't drive to boston if i don't have to and the other ones I am in kinda suck one meets once a month the other shit we have not met in months lol lol Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:15 UTC oh that sucks Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:16 UTC if I was in californing or lived in Boston I would go more often ;) Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:16 UTC my area (utah) is having a tech boom it sucks because it's killing housing prices Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:17 UTC oh utah nice Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:17 UTC but cool because there's lots of coders here lol Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:17 UTC oh yeah that sucks at first then it will rise coders get paid well out here in ma Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:18 UTC I wish I could see myself doing it professionally Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:18 UTC massachusetts and when i was a mailman I noticed most the coders are from india and they tell me learn concepts first always the syntax and coding will come from that learn the theology it will help me out more :) Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:19 UTC i believe it they say once you learn one language you can learn any of them, since all you really need to learn is the syntax Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:20 UTC yes I heard that from many people and it gave me hope then I started fcc lol korzo @korzo Oct 26 2017 22:23 UTC That's true. concepts and syntax is very similar in a lot of languages. Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:24 UTC I know the only difference is when you have regex then everything is confusing lol Victor Abeledo @victorja Oct 26 2017 22:25 UTC Guys do you know why am I getting Reference Error Weakmap is not defined?? code : https://jsfiddle.net/7s3vm9c7/ (node version 8.7) Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:28 UTC because it is not define it is declared Kaz Baig @kbaig Oct 26 2017 22:29 UTC @victorja It's WeakMap not Weakmap Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:30 UTC oh my bag my fault Victor Abeledo @victorja Oct 26 2017 22:31 UTC @kbaig thanks CamperBot @camperbot Oct 26 2017 22:31 UTC victorja sends brownie points to @kbaig :sparkles: :thumbsup: :sparkles: :cookie: 381 | @kbaig |http://www.freecodecamp.com/kbaig Victor Abeledo @victorja Oct 26 2017 22:31 UTC I hate when the bug is just a typo :neutral_face: Kaz Baig @kbaig Oct 26 2017 22:31 UTC esp when it takes hours to find Victor Abeledo @victorja Oct 26 2017 22:32 UTC haha Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:32 UTC I feel you simple bugs piss me off lol Manish Giri @Manish-Giri Oct 26 2017 22:40 UTC @thekholm80 teach me scala Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:40 UTC @daddycardona teach @Manish-Giri scala Albert Cardona II @daddycardona Oct 26 2017 22:40 UTC scala is a person's name right lol I am sitll confused with the challenge so upsetting :) Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:41 UTC @Manish-Giri object Hello extends App { println("Hello, World!") } the rest you can find on SO (I hope?) Manish Giri @Manish-Giri Oct 26 2017 22:47 UTC @thekholm80 I don't know tbh, all I've been told is that scala does FP very well and scala can do big data & machine learning stuff too quite nicely Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:47 UTC FP? Face Punching? Manish Giri @Manish-Giri Oct 26 2017 22:47 UTC but even Java 8 has FP lol Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:47 UTC Fire Protection? Free Puppies? Manish Giri @Manish-Giri Oct 26 2017 22:48 UTC functional programming Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:48 UTC oh lol Manish Giri @Manish-Giri Oct 26 2017 22:48 UTC :dog: Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:48 UTC yeah that makes more sense Manish Giri @Manish-Giri Oct 26 2017 22:48 UTC like how in JS, functions are first class objects, scala is like that (apparently) Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:48 UTC oh neat Manish Giri @Manish-Giri Oct 26 2017 22:49 UTC but even java 8 has fp, seee public static Map<String, List<String>> getStudentNamesByDepartment(Stream<Student> students) { return students.collect(Collectors.groupingBy(Student::getDepartment, Collectors.mapping(Student::getName, Collectors.toList()))); } this was from a kata anyway Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:50 UTC java doesn't look like fun Manish Giri @Manish-Giri Oct 26 2017 22:50 UTC i can't find good scala tuts online Kyle Holm @thekholm80 Oct 26 2017 22:51 UTC$10

wow, there's a lot of $10 scala stuff Manish Giri @Manish-Giri Oct 26 2017 22:52 UTC The course is decent as an intro but will not leave you ready to jump into scala programming in a professional setting. Instead you'd want to look at a more advanced course to get a deeper understanding of scala. Andrei's lectures are terrible, its clear that he's not a programmer and is just reading things off a script. Quite often after one of his lectures, I'd have to google and read up on the concepts he covered, because the videos didn't do a good job explaining. Daniel was great. These guys do leave a lot of detail out because they want you to buy the advanced course they're working on. Keep that in mind and expect only a shallow intro to the topics they cover. everything is$19 at my end :sob:

Hi guys!!! Do you know why am I getting "ReferenceError setPrivateTime is not defined(line 22)"??
https://jsfiddle.net/w2Lktt16/
Kaz Baig

Oct 26 2017 23:23 UTC
@victorja I don't see that error in my console
Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 26 2017 23:26 UTC
@kbaig so you don't have any errors on your console??
I have node 8.7, It should work fine
ReferenceError: setPrivateTime is not defined at Movie.play (C:\Users\Sistemas\Desktop\WEBUIGlobant\topic02\topic02ex1\hello\app.js:22:9) at Object.<anonymous> (C:\Users\Sistemas\Desktop\WEBUIGlobant\topic02\topic02ex1\hello\app.js:42:6) at Module._compile (module.js:624:30) at Object.Module._extensions..js (module.js:635:10) at Module.load (module.js:545:32) at tryModuleLoad (module.js:508:12) at Function.Module._load (module.js:500:3) at Function.Module.runMain (module.js:665:10) at startup (bootstrap_node.js:187:16) at bootstrap_node.js:608:3

Oct 26 2017 23:28 UTC
classes have methods/properties
not vars/consts
you can set a value for the weakmap in the weakmap constructor when you instantiate it
Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 26 2017 23:33 UTC
great
now I'm getting a typeError :worried:
app.js:17 this.privateTime.set(oo,timeTotal); ^ TypeError: Cannot read property 'set' of undefined
korzo
@korzo
Oct 26 2017 23:37 UTC
@victorja becaue privatetime is defined only inside constructor function.
you can't access it from other function
Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 26 2017 23:39 UTC
so do I have any workaround? Tried declaring it outside the constructor but it's the same
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
Oct 26 2017 23:39 UTC
use this to declare, not var
if you don't want to do that
korzo
@korzo
Oct 26 2017 23:40 UTC
@victorja That's why I prefer constructor function over classes
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
Oct 26 2017 23:40 UTC
put all the methods that use privateTime inside the constructor
that's the workaround if you want a private method
korzo
@korzo
Oct 26 2017 23:40 UTC
@victorja workaround is either put privatetime as property or define all methods inside constructor
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
Oct 26 2017 23:40 UTC
all methods that use privatetime anyways
Victor Abeledo
