@markbrathwaite - was all of your code erased? If you go to your freecodecamp.org home page, what do you see? Were you doing the beta version or the original version? I cannot find a page for you on the original site, perhaps you were on the beta site? Or maybe you did get lost... I hope not!

@akosuadenell Nothing is wrong, when you print the object that is what you get. I imagine using aync operations such as yield returns a generator object rather than a plain one.

hey kyle
I guess I was not understanding I needed to make functions inside the function aka closures. but that made no sesnse for the setting funcitons
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:34
@daddycardona do you mean for the Make a Person challenge?

Jan 02 2018 14:35
did you get it sorted out or are you stuck?
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:35
stuck on making set functions
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:36
are you using this?
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:36
my set functions can be made outside of it then I can make a new one and yest
yes
So I have to make 2 set functions or constructors
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:39
you should have 3 getters and 3 setters
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:40
I meant 2 sets of set functions but that wont work either lol
get is pretty easy I thought but I might be wrong about that lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:43
@daddycardona i'm not sure my solution used what they wanted, i'm trying to refactor a bit
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:43
Yes I am getting frustrated because in my tired brain cells lol
I am like well I have to originally setfirstname by breaking the full name down into 2 names. then I have to set it but then I might have to use a second set function so if I want to set it like this.setFirstName= function(2ndtime)
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:46
oh nevermind my solution looks a lot like the one on the forum, i guess I just don't like it lol
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:46
lmao
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:47
so your this.setFirstName is taking what as an argument, and returning what?
Sweet Coding :)
@SweetCodingInc
Jan 02 2018 14:47
Ideally setter shouldn't return anything
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:47
it should be taking a string like "haskel"
Sweet Coding :)
@SweetCodingInc
Jan 02 2018 14:48
and it should set a variable of the name that follows set in function name
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:48
@daddycardona so it takes in the string then does what?
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:52
Yeah but you have to set a name so for instance when you make a var albert = newPerson("Dead Sexy") I have to break down dead and sexy as first and last name. Then if I wat to set it as such what I did originally was set it as bothNames= firstandlast.split( ' ') then I added something like
fn=bothNames[0]
setFirstName(fn);
VaseJS
@VaseJS
Jan 02 2018 14:52
more my parasocial community friends
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:53
actually i just did setFirstName(bothNames[0])
// global variables
var fullName, // full name
    fn, //first name
    ln; //last name
function setFirstName(first) {
    fn = first;
    console.log(fn);
}

function setLastName(last) {
    ln = last;
    console.log(ln);
}

function setFullName(bothNames) {
    fullName = bothNames;
    console.log(fullName);
}
var Person = function(firstAndLast) {
    // Complete the method below and implement the others similarly
    var names = firstAndLast.split(' ');
    console.log(names);
    setFirstName(names[0]);
    setLastName(names[1]);
    setFullName(names[0] + ' ' + names[1]);

    this.getFullName = function() {
        return fullName;
    };
    this.getLastName = function() {
        return ln;
    };
    this.getFirstName = function() {
        return fn;
    };
    return firstAndLast;
};
var bob = new Person('Bob Ross');
bob.getFullName();
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:54
your setters should be inside the Person
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:54
that was my original thought then I can add possibly another setter inside
yes I did that too lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:54
one of the tests is going to look for 6 keys inside Person should you should have 6 this.whatever statements
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 14:57
okay so my setters should be this.setFirstName = function(fn){ code};
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 14:57
yep
and you don't need a return statement inside Person at the end there
Albert Cardona II

    var names = firstAndLast.split(' '), // get first and last name
        fn = names[0], // first name

        setFirstName(okay[0]);
        setLastName(okay[1]);

    this.setFirstName = function(fN) {
        fn = fN;
      fullName=fN+' '+ln;
      setFullName(fullName);

    this.setLastName = function(lN) {

        fullName=fn+' '+lN;
        setFullName(fullName);
        console.log(lN);

    this.getFullName = function() {

    this.getLastName = function() {
        return ln;

    this.getFirstName = function() {

Kyle Holm

Jan 02 2018 15:42
@daddycardona I think you're making this much, much more difficult than it needs to be
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 15:42
probably I usually do that lol
I can't pass just one thing and that is the last one that says if
bob.getLastName() should return "Curry" after bob.setFullName("Haskell Curry").
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 02 2018 15:44

rather than doing it that way, take the list of methods they want:

getFirstName()
getLastName()
getFullName()
setFirstName(first)
setLastName(last)
setFullName(firstAndLast)

and for each of them, see how you can do it, but think about it as if it was the only thing asked (when doing getFirstName() , do it as if there wasn't other methods with it)

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80

var Cat = function (parts) {

  this.getEyes = function () {

}
setters set data, getters get data

@daddycardona Your code was too wordy, I refactored it
function Person(firstAndLast) {
  this.firstAndLast = firstAndLast.split(' ');
  this.firstName = this.firstAndLast[0];
  this.lastName = this.firstAndLast[1];

  this.setFullName = function(fullName){

  }

  this.setFirstName = function(fn){
    this.firstName = fn;
  }

  this.setLastName = function(ln){

  }

  this.getFullName = function(){

  }

Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 15:46
I am confused what you are saying I am trying to do it with just these methods but when they create a person they give you a full name and you have to set the first and last differently
you sweet i am not even there with the $this.firstname
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 02 2018 15:48
maybe i worded that poorly, i meant making it step by step, not trying to fix everything at once
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 15:48
don't put the names into keys or you won't pass the first test
Object.keys(bob).length should return 6
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 02 2018 15:49
you have to fill the methods they give you, you can't add more
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 15:51
I am using what they give me I thought :(
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 02 2018 15:51
    this.getFirstName = function(){
      var arr = firstAndLast.split(" ");
      return arr[0];
    };
instead of
  this.firstAndLast = firstAndLast.split(' ');
  this.firstName = this.firstAndLast[0];

  this.getFirstName = function(){
    return this.firstName;
  }
the big idea, is that you should put whatever you want INSIDE the methods they provide you, rather than build AROUND it
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 15:54
yes I get the original part of get and setters my issues is okay now they are saying if I make a setter or getter I still have to change this.setFirstName() after I set and use bob.setFullName('other Name')

Hey guys, I need your advice, I'm developing the Roguelike Dungeon Crawler project, and I have the feel that my project is really lacking in terms of react practices and the "react way" so to say, doesn't feel like I'm doing it the right away or maybe I'm wrong about that, I'm a bit confused on how my project looks in terms of code structure and my states and components, can you guys have a look at it and say what do you think? (It's not finished yet, just asking about how it looks in terms of the code structure/components/variables declared in the right places, etc)

@Gersho I just feel like I should have separated my App component in to many more or is it fine? No idea how to figure that out without going in to others projects code and studying their structure, but I wanted to do every piece of it myself before comparing it to anything
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 02 2018 16:15
you use the arrow function to avoid binding, and i'm no react expert but i looks fine, and it works too (but you should tell somewhere that it's not the arrows to move, also you should remember n,ot everyone uses qwerty)
if that bothers you, maybe have a main app for the game itself, and separate the rest of the interface if you really want to be able to move around your game
but that's doesn't feel necessary
maybe try asking on CodeReview

Yeah that is what I did originally but it was so confusing I just started over and took the cleaness of what sweet gave me and the idea of gersho gave me with not worrying about making this.variable gets this .split and that made it easier and then the fact that kyle said I am making it harder than what it is reminded me that I do that all the time even my son says the same thing so I stepped back coughed because I have a cold and redid it :)
@khaduch and by the way hi to you and @DarrenfJ
I am really wanting to start a project to work with this api for gitter to help fix this camperbot issue so when I give you props or brownies it just pops up on th left by your pic but I don't understand it yet lol

Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 02 2018 16:50

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 16:50
every time I go to a web site and it asks if I want to enable notifications, I die a little inside
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 02 2018 16:51
was a pain when i registered for a youtube api key btw, i had to log in in vivaldi, and suddenly it changed all my search result (to push french result up, not convenient for coding lessons)
@thekholm80 at least they ask
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 16:51

Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 16:53

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 16:53
I've used Facebook authentication through Passport.js, it's pretty neat
I'm amazed by how much info facebook gives
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 16:54

The funny thing with getter and setter functions I used them in Java, C++, VB and now JS lol but I never really got the hang of them
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 02 2018 16:58

Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 17:01
no I took to much time after each one of those besides C++ and VB they were 2 different classes back to back. Then I took cobalt and just got a certificate from college and joing the Marines instead LOL
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 17:01
i liked VB
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 17:01

Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 17:02
I might need to re evaluate what I want to do with coding because if I want to do more with it I might want to do c#
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 17:03
If I can ever get myself motivated, I want to learn Python next
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 17:03

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 17:03
I don't like the C languages
at all
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 17:05
yeah but c# looks more like Java and I liked it I learned a little on my own but I was like learning JS was much easier with way more help when I was in Afghanistan
then after I came back I just did college courses retired and got so damn lazy lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 17:06
I really like building web servers and it's easy doing it all in just JS. I think adding in Python would expand what I'm able to do
Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona
Jan 02 2018 17:07
you have a great base of understanding these concepts through all your painful struggles with this language lol so learning somethign else for you now might be easier for you
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 02 2018 17:07

Albert Cardona II
@daddycardona

Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 02 2018 17:13
well it's true for maintaining python2 would make sense, but i assumed i'd learn3, and if need be learn the differences (that was a new project, not an update/maintain)
because of that movie i had a harder time googling django >.>
Kyle Holm

@akosuadenell A generator function returns a generator iterator.
To get the values from the function you have to call next() on the returned value.
Here is a decent article on them.
