In private that's fine. I'm not allowed to discuss bans of other users though due to privacy

Anyone willing to help give me some ideas, and point me in the right direction for the pomodoro timer? I built a function for a timer that works, and I'm passing in variables for the session times, and then trying to run the function again with different variables for the break timer. My issue is I can't come up with a way for the break timer to run after I complete the session timer. Do I have to use a callback function for this?
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:17
sure, @Nscha1b
let me take a look at what you have
@bjorno43 there are no bans here involved, just a horror story

so there was this guy i was buds with called jeff. jeff was very much a meme lord like myself
one day he was promoted to moderator
there were a few bans going on that neither of us approved of so i told him my complaint
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 07 2018 00:20
btw if you're a recent mod, that means they still recruit mods ? i assumed they were killing off the chat
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:20
and he told them the things we agreed on in that conversation
then the mods went off on him how he's my puppet
he got virtual aids and now he's in a better place
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jan 07 2018 00:24
Well, I wasn't there so I can't judge the situation. However, I do agree that Moderator decisions should discussed amongst the team only though. If you start involving others, there's bound to be problems. It's like telling your boss that you have a friend who is a boss of another company and that he thinks your boss should make different decisions. That doesn't work.
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:25
nah, i just forwarded my complaint and he listened
bans are public knowledge so i don't think he shared anything more than he should have
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jan 07 2018 00:26
Maybe. But he shouldn't have forwarded your complaint. If he agreed with you, he should've brought it as why he thinks something is wrong with the ban. Should've left you out of the conversation
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:28
well, it was more like discussing if you should make the website blue, green, and purple, or orange, yellow, and pink with a friend who has an eye for design and coming up with a conclusion and forwarding that to your boss
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 07 2018 00:29

slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:30
i'm just lurking sorta cuz i gotta fix up my github and essentially move everything i have on bitbucket to github and i kinda don't wanna do it

Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 07 2018 00:32
hehe, i'am cleaning up my project it's almost github ready, will be my first stuff on github :D
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jan 07 2018 00:32
Ye I understand what you mean. But I also understand the Moderators in what they said. Again, I wasn't there. I can't judge what happened. My private chat is always open for everyone should they wish to discuss a decision I made. But in the end it'll be my decision in what I'm gonna do with it. And if I decide to change my point of view, I'll bring it as such.
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:33
someone help the clock friend, i didn't realize it would take this long to figure out what's going on
i understand, but i believe openly calling someone a puppet is slander, no?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jan 07 2018 00:34
However, if the decision doesn't concern the person talking to me about it, I won't discuss it with them either. That's simply being respectfull to the person that is involved. Even if (s)he broke the rules :)
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:35
the whole case was questionable, a guy that used to help here tons got banned
which is why all of us who frequented this place were pretty dissatisfied
and i don't think it was something major either
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b

So to run this timer for both the session, and then the break, would a call back be the best way to do it? I had one before, and was trying to run it after I cleared time timeout for start, but both functions would run right off the start. I'm guessing I was doing the call back wrong?
function timer(minID, secID, min, sec){
        var start = setInterval(function() {
          if (pause == true) {
            clearInterval( start );
          } else {
            if (sec == 0) {
              min--;
              minID.html(min);
              sec = 59;
              secID.html(sec);
              changeColor();
            } else {
              sec--;
              if (sec < 10) {
                secID.html("0" + sec);
              } else {
                secID.html(sec);
              }
              if (sec == 0 && min == 0) {
                window.clearTimeout(start);

              }

              changeColor();
            }
          }
        }, 1000);
      }
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jan 07 2018 00:39
I see. Well, there will always be bans where others will be dissatisfied with that decision. No matter how hard you try, you can't make everyone happy. In the end, we have a Code of Conduct. If a user breaks that, they are banned and given a chance to come back if they agree upon the CoC. With the exception of extreem situations. After that, if they break the CoC again, that's the end of it. We can't make exceptions for users that have done a lot of good. It's not a free pass to do some bad
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:40
@Nscha1b wdym a callback, why don't you use the same function for both?
@bjorno43 of course, but then again i can't remember the case clearly so i can't tell you if they were right and my views were biased or if they were wrong and it was a vague clause in coc they referred to
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b
Jan 07 2018 00:43
Well that's what I was going to do initially, just have two separate timers. For some dumb reason, I can't understand how to not have both timers start at the same time. Like I would like to say ... Loop through these two timers when not paused. but I'm really losing it on something so simple haha
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:43
there were times where specific mods(not naming any names) would be constantly on you for absolutely any reason especially if they didn't like you
@Nscha1b why at the same time?
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b
Jan 07 2018 00:44
How would I tell the second timer when the first interval timer has finished, use a flag variable or something?
I don't want them to start at the same time, that's my issue
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:44
my programming bud and i just stored the times in variables, when one was done the second one would start
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jan 07 2018 00:44
Best to just let it rest :) You can be sure that bans are monitored by the entire Moderator team and Quincy. If any Mod does something questionable, it'll be dealt with very fast
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b
Jan 07 2018 00:45
So, never clear the timeout basically? just re set the time then
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:46
wait lemme see what i'm saying, i've slept for 3 hours last night
sec
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b
Jan 07 2018 00:48
I'm sure I'm making this harder than it needs to be in my head, so I appreciate the ideas
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:49
if (pause == true) { clearInterval( start ); }
this should be on it's own, not tested every second
you should assign a click handler that will do this when you press pause
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b
Jan 07 2018 00:49

I think I doubled it up somehow...

```
$(".circle").on("click", function() {
        if (pause == true) {
          pause = false;
          timer($("#sessionTimerMin"),$("#sessionTimerSec"),$("#sessionTimerMin").html(),$("#sessionTimerSec").html());
        } else {
          pause = true;
        }
      });
I see how you're saying to do it
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:52
if (pause == true) { pause = false;
blah blah can be just pause = !pause
cuz that way you don't have to make a thousand buttons, unless that's what you wanna do
your pause seems to be more of a reset than a pause tho
oh wait no boo me i read it wrong
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b
Jan 07 2018 00:53
It doesn't seem to clear the time
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jan 07 2018 00:54
It is. Clearing the interval and starting it again is like Stop -> Play. Not Pause -> Play
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b
Jan 07 2018 00:54
So it clears it but re sets it where it should start? rather than just pausing it?
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:55
yeah, and if you want an actual pause, record the time
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b
Jan 07 2018 00:55
okay cool
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 00:57
if (counter == 0) {
        clearInterval(time);
        swap();
        bool = !bool;
        counterCalc(clock);
        timer(clock);
      }
this is the terrible way we did it, we'd just record the counter regardless of the setting since you just need it to keep going afterwards
timer is the name of the main function in charge of changing the time and stuff
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jan 07 2018 00:59
Meh. I always try to avoid timers if possible. It's very easy to accidently stack them up and cause a memory leak
Nick Schafer
@Nscha1b
Jan 07 2018 01:00
Sweet thanks for showing me how you did it, that at least give's me an idea of what I need to try and do.
Bjorn van de Peut
The reason why I would go for a completely different design is because you're trying to sell yourself. If you use a type of design everyone else uses, it feels like you simply downloaded some template and filled that in.
hey guys i have a javascript function but am not sure what is wrong.
function towerBuilder(nFloors) {
 //2nFloors-1 is basic formula
 //issue how to multiply and subtract strings???
 //issue- how to add those strings to an array???
 var astric="*";
 var lastFloor=astric.repeat(nFloors);
 while ( nFloors>0) {
   var eachFloor= lastFloor-2;
   var entireTower=[lastFloor];
   entireTower.unshift(eachFloor);
   return entireTower;
}
``
my console tells me that the all of the items in my arrays are returning null except for the last one-not too sure what is going on.
 //issue- how to add those strings to an array???
 var astric="*";
 var lastFloor=astric.repeat(nFloors);
 var two="**";
 while ( nFloors>0) {
   var eachFloor= lastFloor-two;
   var entireTower=[lastFloor];
   entireTower.unshift(eachFloor);
   return entireTower;
}
still returning null
I'm thinking this will solve my issue
Gersho
  let amount = 1;
  for (i=0; i<nFloors; i++){
  arr.push(star.repeat(amount));
  amount += 2;
  }
  return arr;
}
but it doesn't put the spaces but the number of stars is correct
artbohr
@artbohr
Jan 07 2018 06:15
@ismailhozain I have an ugly solution in python here, but it passes all 100 tests, try to figure out a javascript one and understand the logic
def tower_builder(n_floors):
  arr = []
  stars = "*"
  result = ""
  for x in range(n_floors):
    # calculate amount of stars for current iteration
    stars += "*" * (x*2)
    # calculate amount of spaces for current iteration
    result += " " * ((2 * (n_floors) - len(stars)) // 2)
    # add stars to the string
    result += stars
    # add trailing spaces
    result += " " * ((2 * (n_floors) - len(stars)) // 2)
    # append finished string to the resulting array
    arr.append(result)
    # reset stars and string
    stars = "*"
    result = ""
  return arr
also you can refractor it quite a bit by setting the variables in the for loop
stars  = "*" * (x*2)
spaces  = " " * ((2 * (n_floors) - len(stars)) // 2)
arr.append(spaces + stars + spaces)
so no resetting at the end is required, that cuts the solution quite a bit, here is the full soluton, looking much better
def tower_builder(n_floors):
  arr = []
  for x in range(n_floors):
    stars  = "*" + "*" * (x*2)
    spaces  = " " * ((2 * (n_floors) - len(stars)) // 2)
    arr.append(spaces + stars + spaces)
  return arr
i'm almost done, unless i encounter troubles using github it should be upload in a few hours (my first repo !)
i'm doing manual testing because i haven't read the chapter about unit tests yet xD
another good news today, french TV today is too focused on it's own troubles to talk about trump
unit tests are basically
function test_me(given, expected) {
    return given === expected
}
you basically want to put the thing you're testing in a sticky situation, see how it reacts, and see if it passed or not
obviously there are a lot of libraries or whatever you wanna call em that allow you to go further in testing, but it all boils down to what i showed you
Heya
Just installed the latest Skype. And I have to admit. It's a LOT better
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 19:52
oh great! just in time to uninstall that crap and install discord
discord will make you see the things you've not seen before
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jan 07 2018 19:53
Haha I have both :P
But the latest Skype that released today is almost a copy of Discord
Jan 07 2018 19:54
i hope it's better than what skype has been dragging around for years
The codec?
@Gersho
Jan 07 2018 20:15
last time i used skype the interface had changed so much i couldn't even find the contact list
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 20:33
ya for voip
then again it might not be the codec itself but something else, but there's so much compression regardless if you've both got amazing interwebs or not
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 07 2018 20:36
haven't used voip in ages, used teamspeak back then
slri
@slri
I have no job references because I've been caring for my grandparents for the last 17 years (24/7 job). Was told by someone reviewing my resume that I needed at least, 1 off-line job reference. Was wondering if I could help someone in order to gain a reference.
if you need something offline it's unlikely you'll find it here, should try looking near you, maybe in your townhall and/or job office, consider charities too (as a bonus it looks good on a resume )
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 21:33
just get an internship? those don't require anything
Jesse
@ki4jgt
Jan 07 2018 21:52
@RuinIsProbablyTaken Any paid internships in tech? I'm in a small town in the middle of nowhere so I really don't have access to anything resume worthy.
slri
@slri
Jan 07 2018 21:54
of course there are, but they're hard to find and you have to be really good at what you do
you can go for remote internships if irl ones aren't available
there's more of them
oh but if you live near a big city you could potentially look there for some work to put on your resume
if all fails, lie
Well, I took an A+ cert class in high school. I was programming my 56k modem in middle school, I got an Amateur radio license in high school, and I was hacking adult websites (I'm not going into why) in high school. I've got more experience with computers than a lot of people I've seen going into computer jobs but I have no references because growing up, I was caring for my two grandparents who needed 24/7 care.
And I live in a small town without a car, So I'm stuck here :).
sometimes you just simply can't find an actual proper job that'll get you started, that's when you need to emphasize something you really did but to the point where it seems like a job or experience at least
you can say that you've done freelance pentesting, profit!
all sorts of stuff, seem busy and very interested
this is the stuff that i've heard from people who actually have jobs or are recruiters.
