oh duh, spaced over the other's, looked on MDN's map page and had this as well
map(Math.sqrt);
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:00 UTC
That.. definitely goes the wrong way.
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jan 15 2018 00:00 UTC
const squaredIntegers = arr.filter(e => e % 1 === 0).map(x => x * x);
you can just mod with 1
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:00 UTC
Will that get positives?
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jan 15 2018 00:00 UTC
that will give you integers
mjamil016

i'm creating a blog from scratch in notepad+. how do i separate the header area from the body? do I need to add a container or something?
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jan 15 2018 00:01 UTC
that line passes
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:01 UTC
It shouldn't.
(e=>e%1===0)(-3) <== Returns true.
Although your's is shorter for the Integer part. :-D
So arr.filter(n=>n%1==0&&n>0).map(n=>n*n)
Haley Elder
@haleyelder
Jan 15 2018 00:03 UTC
@mjamil016 do you have a div container for your header area? and yes usually there's a <body> <div class="#"> </div> </body> to contain the body area
mjamil016
@mjamil016
Jan 15 2018 00:03 UTC
@haleyelder nope i didn't include div container for header area
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:05 UTC

@mjamil016

the basic skeleton html should be like

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html >

<head>
  <meta charset="UTF-8">
  <title>Title</title>

  <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/style.css">

</head>

<body>

  <script src="js/index.js"></script>

</body>

</html>

assuming one css and one js file, remove the js line if you don't need it

mjamil016

@Gersho i need to separate my header area from the body. i'm not sure how to do that
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 15 2018 00:11 UTC
@mjamil016 you might benefit from taking a look at Bootstrap they have a lot of pre-built stuff you can just plug in if you're not interested in learning how to build it yourself
and their documentation is pretty awesome
mjamil016
@mjamil016
Jan 15 2018 00:12 UTC

Jan 15 2018 00:13 UTC

i need to separate my header area from the body.

so, like an horizontal navigation bar ?

Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:13 UTC
@mjamil016 It helps to learn to walk before you run. I'd really suggest at least going through fCC's curriculum if you haven't.
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:14 UTC
what ? you don't push your kids into the pool to make them learn to swim ?
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:14 UTC
I mean, that's how I learned, but would not suggest.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 15 2018 00:14 UTC
i find that's the best way to get rid of kids
mjamil016
@mjamil016
Jan 15 2018 00:15 UTC
@Gersho no just trying to separate the two areas so that the contents within the body stays only in the body area
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:15 UTC
honestly i have trouble understanding what you're trying to achieve
you mean in the code ? or in the final display ?
mjamil016
@mjamil016
Jan 15 2018 00:15 UTC
@gersho in the code
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 15 2018 00:16 UTC
html 5 has semantic elements now, so you can do something like
<body>
  <header>
  ...
  </header>
  <main>
  ...
  </main>
  <footer>
  ...
  </footer>
</body>
mjamil016
@mjamil016
Jan 15 2018 00:16 UTC
@Gersho i guess i need a container to divide the header area and body
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:16 UTC
oh i had forgotten about those Kyle xD
i use <div> for everything lol
Aditya
@ezioda004
Jan 15 2018 00:17 UTC
@mjamil016 I dont fully understand either, but if you want to create 2 divs in a body and have content in them and be separate to each other, you can do .div {margin: 20px;}
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:17 UTC

i use <div> for everything lol

same

Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:18 UTC
I'm just.. imagining a lot of hacking with ::before so you don't have to use <li> and a lot of handlers so you can avoid <button> and <input>..
DIV ALL THE THINGS!
It makes me sad thinking about the fact that people actually do that kind of stuff. :-(
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 15 2018 00:19 UTC
<button> has baked in functionality that i hate having to work around, so a little css is better for me
i don't mind if you're sad, it's a harsh world
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:20 UTC
What functionality?
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:20 UTC
<div class="btn btn-primary"> is my button
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:20 UTC

Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:20 UTC
i would if i had to
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:21 UTC
I mean, yeah. I'd do anything if I had to. :-P
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:21 UTC
no i mean if i had to do a form
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:21 UTC
You'd build the form out of <div>s instead of regular <input>s?
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:22 UTC
yeah i'd rather do more JS instead of thinking at some html xD

vs code question, the step into binding is not working in debug mode. i know i'm in debug mode cuz the debug step though box appears, but f11 key binding stays with full screen instead of using step into when debugging. anyone know how to fix?
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:22 UTC
you should change one of the 2
if you can
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 15 2018 00:23 UTC
i've also been known to make my own checkboxes, radio buttons, etc out of svgs because the built in html elements can't be styled in any useful way

my first action when installing an editor: remove the ctrl+Q shortcut (close client)
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:24 UTC
Works fine for me, @GitHub-Henry.
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Jan 15 2018 00:24 UTC
i'm guessing there's a config somewhere that's causing f11 full screen to keep control when debugging
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:26 UTC
Must be. I just double checked. I've got both bound to F11, and I set a breakpoint, ran the debugger, hit F11 and it stepped through the app instead of full screening.
And it full screened just fine when the debugger was stopped completely.
Are you using any keymaps maybe?
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Jan 15 2018 00:28 UTC
@HeinousTugboat previously i didn't change any keyboard shortcuts, but decided to make life easy and take Gersho's approach and change full screen so it doesn't conflict with step into since both use F11, the new config works now
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:28 UTC
Weird. Glad it's working at least! :thumbsup:
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Jan 15 2018 00:29 UTC

i did that because designers always assume qwerty keyboard, so on azerty it ends ups like ctrlQ (quit) and CtrlS (save) are....next to each other
...let's save that long stuff you just did and....it's gone
/rage
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:31 UTC
That's why I set both VS Code and ST3 up so that if I close the window, it just saves the buffers even if the files aren't saved.
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:32 UTC
i don't know fancy option like that so i went the easy route :p
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:33 UTC
Hmm.. does your VS Code not actually do that automatically?
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:33 UTC
i use atom
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:33 UTC
I just checked, and mine definitely does that, but I don't actually see any settings for it.
Oh, you poor soul.
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:34 UTC
is that wrong ? i've only tried vscode once and kinda liked atom so i went with that
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat
Jan 15 2018 00:35 UTC
I mean.. I can't say it's wrong.
But I can say that VS Code is everything that's right with Electron, and Atom is everything that's wrong with Electron. So there's that.
And, well, it's really hard to beat ST3's speed.
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:35 UTC
so vs code or sublime ?
guess i'll try sublime next time i start a project
Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat

I use VS Code for projects and ST3 for general text editing.

Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat

I don't use it that often. I like having Powershell open separately.
Although, I do use the built-in output window a lot.
Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:38 UTC
well yeah that was why i didn't understand, i have terminal already in the os
Alexander Jarman

Alexander Jarman
@HeinousTugboat

Gersho
@Gersho
Jan 15 2018 00:40 UTC

Alexander Jarman

html5 is semantic so while it may not be apart of the lesson, lets add to the lesson. not sure why they aren’t teaching proper html5
labeling things with meaningless classes is a poor practice

so

<div class=“content”>

is a poor practice

it serves no purpose

that is a css thing. first you must add another image under the first one.
@mjamil016
mjamil016
@mjamil016
Jan 15 2018 03:18 UTC
@VaseJS already did
VaseJS
@VaseJS
Jan 15 2018 03:19 UTC
then from there you have a few options
you can make each one width: 50%
it would be better to wrap both in a div so you can better control the images
mjamil016
@mjamil016
Jan 15 2018 03:20 UTC
@VaseJS how do i wrap
VaseJS
@VaseJS
Jan 15 2018 03:20 UTC
thats what divs are good for. putting things in boxes
<div>
  <img … />
  <img … />
</div>
now you can control the images much better.
however, here i would highly recommend for you to learn flexbox
and CSS Grids
the best way is to follow these tutorials
they’re interactive and entertaining
mjamil016
@mjamil016

most frameworks call them containers as they have built in styling. you can always do the same thing
when you learn flexbox, display: flex
is a container
you’ll see when you get there
ther tutorial to learn is http://cssgridgarden.com/
you will be well on your way after learning these
also going through modzilla css tutorial will give you a solid foundation to do things

Several campers have pointed out that coding-jobs is mostly spammers coming in to try and trick campers with dubious job offers. So the one action I'm going to take is to close that room. If anyone is interested in talking about getting a developer job, we have a popular forum category for that, and it's easier to moderate.

mmm I think I disagree about the "was" statement, though I do need to think about it more
At this stage, Apple's made so much progress on UX through abstractions that the incremental improvements they need to keep up are lower than their competitors
Now, they need to focus on external design, marketing, and hardware in that order or priority

Kyle Holm

But I do want to know what the absolute values on those sales numbers are. Could be diluted by other factors like increased offerings in the lower priced category, making smartphones accessible to a lot more people
Apple isn't actually competing with them, and it's unlikely they will choose to as it would dilute their brand
I think I might hit up my old consulting professor about this actually lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jan 15 2018 16:14 UTC
I think their buyback program helped a lot, and gave a lower cost-to-entry for people that didn't want to spend $1k on a phone, but they still don't see a large number of new customers at each product launch

@thekholm80 Buyback ostensibly seems like a good way to make their products more accessible without outright making them cheaper. Despite what people may claim, I think the large price tag is some portion of the appeal

Kyle Holm

@zifahm You need to move your function out of the addEventListener, you have to pass the same function reference
to both calls or it won't know which function to remove.
