for example, how can i define the turns in the game?
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 00:07
well, i don't know what you're trying to ask specifically so i'm assuming you're asking "how do i tell when a player's turn is over"
  • you can do it the civ way and define the number of tiles you can move after which their turn will automatically be over
  • you can allow the player to say when they're done (would make more sense with the number of tiles he can move after which you don't allow him to move more and make him click a button that will end his turn)
  • you can just simply automatically switch turns after every action on the map
Daniel
@dkapexhiu
Jan 22 2018 00:11
well, i want to define the number of tiles the player can move after the his turn will be over and go to the next player
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 00:12
just have something counting them and with each move calculate how many moves he has left
in that same handler you just make it check if there's no more moves to make and switch
and once you switch you refresh the counter
would be the easiest way of going about it
it's up to you where you'll be doing all this and how you'll organize it

thank you very much @RuinIsProbablyTaken
just for your opinion, it is better to modify the function at line 436 processMovement or the function at line 487 canMoveTo and how:

@dkapexhiu i'm sorry for the late reply. i think you should simply make a new function to handle the actual moves player wants to make vs moves that are left and all that jazz

i hope to land a remote job soon enough. i know i've got the experience and the knowledge to get almost any job (maybe not like lead, but mid-senior would be doable)
yeah, well that scene ain't too hot either
maybe i've been looking in all the wrong places

especially if you're new, yeah
artbohr

artbohr

Jan 22 2018 02:55
I also heard startups are much more open to risky things, quite logical lol, than the established companies
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 02:55
established companies are even more open to risky shit cuz they can afford it
you suck? you're fired. simple
artbohr
@artbohr
Jan 22 2018 02:56
not neccesarily risky, but non standard if you what I mean, coz people with no degree are viewed as weirdos sometimes, especially in non US countries I think
if you know what I mean*
well, also makes a lot of sense
but since the top ppl are far away of hiring people, who only look for some "scheme" when looking for people
which 99% of the time says, degree and experience
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 02:58
you're looking at jobs as if all the hiring people copy-paste actually means something
i've learned something from a friend of mine which is helping me right now
and it's: don't look at the job requirements and that bullshit
none of that is an actual must, it's just a way to filter people out
do your homework on the company you're applying to, do your homework on some of their projects and just what they do in general

@RuinIsProbablyTaken and btw, you are applying to US remote jobs?
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:03
and another thing: don't be too humble because it translates to lack of confidence which generally means that you're dumb as a rock and you're not
i'm applying to whatever i can find
i personally like PHP so any job that mentions PHP i try to apply to
artbohr
@artbohr
Jan 22 2018 03:04
that's something rare I hear around "liking PHP", but PHP has much jobs I heard
so that's nice for you
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:05
i don't see why are people so against php, it can be a real mess, but they're finally working on improving that side of php which is pretty nice actually
artbohr
@artbohr
Jan 22 2018 03:06
ye I heard that also, old grudges lol
I'm more in to python and science, I started learning webdev more like a "just in case" thing, and I'm here almost finishing the whole curriculum of FCC, kinda funny
just feels like tackling math/AI (ML), takes so much time that it's unreliable to study just this
and I also thought that going through FCC will make me a better programmer, which is totally true, I learnt a lot of things and I'm not finished with FCC yet, so totally worth it, a lot of interesting "web" things
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:11
yeah i've not even finished the front end cert stuff lmao
i've just been learning stuff here and there and working most of the time

Jan 22 2018 03:18
maybe when you are finishing your career in about 20 years from now, you could programm some robots as assistants meanwhile for you clinic ^^
as Neil deGrasse says, our mortality helps us advance and never stop, because if we were immortal we would always say, there is time for this and that, so I'll do it later, well most people anyways does that, because they are not aware of the time and their mortality lol
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:20
well, i think that it's natural for beings to advance regardless of mortality
because you'll eventually get bored of sitting around and you'll move your ass and do something
artbohr

Jan 22 2018 03:21

@RuinIsProbablyTaken it's an introduction of yourself or you actually want to "sell" yourself to potential clients?
(ie send it for a job in case a client ask, can you give me your portfolio?)

and if #2: what kind of position do you wish to apply for?

slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:45
ah i see what you mean. i wanna use it for jobs mainly. and i generally go for any position where i have some experience. basically front end, back end (PHP is bae), full stack (LAMP)
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jan 22 2018 03:46
@RuinIsProbablyTaken i would also change the navbar opacity to 1 when scrolling down so u can see well all the time the navigation as u made it fixed top
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jan 22 2018 03:47

@RuinIsProbablyTaken so I'd say is mostly fine, but there are a couple of things that I thinks are a big no as front-end.

1- the menu opacity when over the text is a big no-no for UX
2- the form doesn't even look like a form
3- navigating in the "showcase" are is impossible

slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:48
eh being a designer and a front end developer are two totally different things, aren't they?
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jan 22 2018 03:48
for the rest, like spacing - fonts - symmetries - if you dpn't propose yourself as a designer then I think it's more a matter of preferences that an imperative
@RuinIsProbablyTaken yep but the menu is impossible to read. that's not desiging.. that's bad UI
but I'm being pretty hars
*harsh
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jan 22 2018 03:49
@RuinIsProbablyTaken here an example
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:50
@Marmiz ok so what do you propose i do with the form?
also, how do i make showcase easier for navigating?
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jan 22 2018 03:51
@RuinIsProbablyTaken easiest fix is a classic:
label - input side by side:
as of it is now the label looks like the input itself
so it's clear what is what
rule of UI is: "if you have to explain it, it's bad UI"
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:53
hmmm
all right, this is actually interesting cuz i'm getting 2 different stories
i've sent it to people who have not coded a thing in their life
one of them is my friend who doesn't even know how to use discord properly lmao
and i've not heard that from him, the only thing that i heard from him that was hard for him to figure out was how to be able to scroll away from the showcase
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jan 22 2018 03:55
@RuinIsProbablyTaken thats why your nav has to be opacity 1
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:56
but thank you for your input, i have a feeling like i know what to do. if there's anything more to add please do tell \o/
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jan 22 2018 03:56
@RuinIsProbablyTaken ofc when scrolling down.
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 03:56
and yeah, i'll fix nav's opacity @sorinr
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jan 22 2018 04:01

@RuinIsProbablyTaken

also, how do i make showcase easier for navigating?

I would probably remove the scrolling inside, and keep a functionality like a "standard" carousel:
a left-right navigation and an automatic switching every x seconds.

slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 04:02
so basically make it like every other website out there ._.
i'll think of something to fix it, i'll add navigation dots if i gotta, i just won't conform lmao
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jan 22 2018 04:02
there's a reason why 3 wheels cars are not made standard
slri
@slri
Jan 22 2018 04:03
yeah, but i won't have people who don't know how to use the internet checking out my portfolio
i think taking everything apart and making it just like every other website makes it lose personality
i've tried to make it easier for navigation, but i overdid it by adding tons of little things
i just need to make a legit plan of how i'll make it easier
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jan 22 2018 04:05

or go on r/webdev and ask for fb there too :)

In other words, does the system here still think I'm in the room even though I've closed the window?
chat room s I've been in here
I think I just found the answer. I see a column on the right side of the display here where there a dropdown menu and one of the items is "Leave"
Even though I haven't been in any of those rooms for a couple days still had a list of several room in the column.
Peace out fellas

@jfines just set your chat room notifications so you get only the ones you r mentioned in
@jfines there is a dropdown btn in the right navbar resembling like 3 vertical sliding bars
Jacob Fines

Jan 22 2018 06:43
@sorinr I feel bad since I didn't know about it and several days passed I was getting notifications where people were saying stuff to me and I wasn't here. Is that bad?
It's like i just ditched or something (but I didn't mean to)

@jfines by default notifications are "on" for all conversations in the chat room. so you have the option to cancel all or allow only the ones you are mentioned in

I think I found the problem with what's being talked about here: https://forum.freecodecamp.org/t/freecodecamp-challenge-guide-target-the-same-element-with-multiple-jquery-selectors/18322/8

..and it is an obscure hard to notice nuance of the code that is not mentioned in that thread. However, the topic is locked so no way to add a comment about it.

I do feel it would be a valuable contribution to that topic though (since it is something that would be very hard to spot and it also teaches something about a funny nuance of jquery I think).

Is there anyone to talk to to see if they want to add the information to there?

@jfines That nuance is similar to vanilla javascripts getElementById and getElementsByClassName and adding classes to a selector classList.add("some-class")
You learn the hard way ;)
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jan 22 2018 08:20

@jfines one thing is selecting a class, another is adding a class.

Same as you do in plain CSS.
if you want to select your class you use the class selector (dot)

.myClass {
   ...properties
}

but when you actually want to add it to html you don't need the dot:

<p class="myClass" />

<!-- and not -->
<p class=".myClass" />

Make sense?
Also addClass documentation may help you clearing things up.

@Marmiz I hadn't considered that it actually does parallel regular css like that. Thank you for pointing that out.
