I don't quite understand the requirements of the stock market chart, and it's a bit of the fault of Quincy Larson's video that it's not made clear. Anyway: let's say I open window 1 and see my four default stocks A, B, C, and D. Then I add E and F. If I, after all of that, open window 2, will E and F be there? Or is the requirement of the project just window 2 responds to changes in window 1 only when they are both active at the same time?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 20:00
@sgoldber61 i'm doing mine so that any changes are persistent on the server
so in your scenario, when window 2 is opened E and F will be there too
Sam Goldberg
@sgoldber61
Mar 26 2018 20:01
Ahh that makes complete sense.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 20:01
of course if the server gets restarted it will reset to defaults
Sam Goldberg
@sgoldber61
Mar 26 2018 20:02
Yes, but solving that problem would require a database. Which seems like a bit overkill.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 20:03
yeah
i see it more as a practical demo of socket.io than a useful application
Sam Goldberg
@sgoldber61
Mar 26 2018 20:04
Yeah, I did get to learn how to do nontrivial things with Promises in this project, which was also educational.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 20:04
are you using async / await?
Sam Goldberg
@sgoldber61
Mar 26 2018 20:05
No
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 20:05
a lot of people consider it 'syntactical sugar' but i think it really makes promises easy to understand
Sam Goldberg
@sgoldber61
Mar 26 2018 20:07
I see. Well, now that you mention it, there's a workshop at a live coding academy I've been going to that I think will cover async/await. I've actually been hanging out and I'm strongly considering shelling out the money for the 3 month boot camp experience.
They have like 100k average salary, mid level and even senior level positions right out of the school.
And I'm kind of tired of doing this on my on and want to get on LOL
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 20:07
some people get a lot of good out of bootcamps, especially if they help with job placement after completion
Sam Goldberg
@sgoldber61
Mar 26 2018 20:08
Yes, and this one does. It's called Codesmith. They cover MERN so what I've been learning is directly useful.
But these guys make projects that actually get github starts. One small group there actually made React-D3 omg
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 20:08
i looked at one here and it taught Ruby and Angular. i was not interested lol
Sam Goldberg
@sgoldber61
Mar 26 2018 20:10
They were telling us that when you self-study, the best most can do (and this really applies to me) is making CRUD apps, but larger scale engineering concerns... you don't really learn on your own. Contrast that to this camp that's getting final projects with thousands of github stars, very complex projects.
But...
A lot of camps just wind up getting you to the level of CRUD apps (i.e. what we are doing right now) and are probably not worth it
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 20:10
yeah
i would argue that anyone wanting to go beyond where we're at and still self-learn can join one of many open source projects and start contributing.
then you'd get the exposure to larger-scale projects
but i have not personally done that, so it might not actually be feasible
Sam Goldberg
@sgoldber61
Mar 26 2018 20:12
That's a good point. Have you heard any advice on where to look? Which ones to join? Do the FCC ones get a lot of activity and help?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 20:13
last i heard fCC was looking for a ton of help getting beta finished
but there are tons of lists of 'beginner friendly' projects looking for contributors
Sam Goldberg
@sgoldber61
Mar 26 2018 20:15
OK thanks. I've bookmarked that. There are a lot of JS ones that are beginner only or beginner friendly.

@thekholm80 @khaduch hi . i am not sure why this challenge won't passed. any idea? https://beta.freecodecamp.org/en/challenges/regular-expressions/reuse-patterns-using-capture-groups
my code:
let repeatNum = "42 42 42";
let reRegex = /(\d+)\s\1\s\1/; // Change this line
let result = reRegex.test(repeatNum);
btw i did use regex101 for test it. O_o

Mar 26 2018 22:25
yeah i am not sure if my code is correct :joy:
it seems i am
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 22:25
i think it's because in 42 42 42 42 it will match the first 3
Lance
@texas2010
Mar 26 2018 22:26
yeah but i test it at regex101. it dont match 42 42 42 42
Screen Shot 2018-03-26 at 5.26.54 PM.png
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 22:27
image.png
it matches the first 3 out of the 4 numbers
so it would return true
Lance
@texas2010
Mar 26 2018 22:27
right. odd. more like it is bug
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 22:30
i don't think it's a bug
i'm trying to figure it out, i'm so bad at regex
Lance
@texas2010
Mar 26 2018 22:30
but this challenge suppose to passed on 42 42 42 42
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 22:31
Your regex should not match "42 42 42 42".
Lance
@texas2010
Mar 26 2018 22:31
oh well. thank you for try.
right. i got wrong. it suppose to be pass
Kyle Holm

Mar 26 2018 22:31
i'll keep at it, see if i can figure it out
Lance
@texas2010
Mar 26 2018 22:34
@thekholm80 freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp#15481
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 22:35
@texas2010 but it was fixed freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp#15515
so i assume the test is working as intended
we're just bad at regex
Lance
@texas2010
Mar 26 2018 22:38
@thekholm80 how do you make that scan every line? somehow it read whole test string. O_o . in that regex101
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 22:39
oh i don't know lol it does that by default for me
Lance
@texas2010
Mar 26 2018 22:39
oh weird...
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 22:40
@texas2010 so /^(\d+)\s\1\s\1$/ passed for me
it's ^ start of string (\d+) first capture group (one or more numbers) \s space \1 repeat capture group 1 ... $ end of string
Lance
@texas2010
Mar 26 2018 22:41
O_o that dont make sense.... ughhh
why do we need to use ^ and $? i trying to understand
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Mar 26 2018 22:43
i used it so it would start the match from the beginning of the string, and end the match at the end of the string
so there can't be anything extra before or after the match
Lance
@texas2010
Mar 26 2018 22:47
