Hello
I don't have a computer yet and planning on picking up one to use as a workstation as I go through theodinproject. Do you have any suggestions for a laptop? Which OS would be better to start on? Linux or MacOS? I'm new to this so the less setup needed, the better. .

@cabrerakma - there are a lot of similarities between Linux and MacOS. I think that going with Linux would probably be a little more general purpose? You can run Linux on all kinds of computers, but if you have a Mac, then go with MacOS...

@cabrerakma if you have any desire to develop for iOS/OSX then working natively(ie. macs) is the best choice. As for running linux you always have the option of running it in a virtual machine, both on mac/windows
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 01:09
it's all a tradeoff, though. for the price of an older mac you can get a much better, newer pc
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 01:09
you always pay a premium for the name with a mac
bought myself a cheapish used macbook pro for that sorta thing

i've been looking for one, best i can do around here is around $400 for a core-2 duo mac book. i can't bring myself to spend that much for so little
cabrerakma
@cabrerakma
May 12 2018 01:11
Oh. Umm. that's what I figured. There's this really neat laptop available in our country (Mi Air) which can be bought new at almost half the price of a used macbook. But I'm worried that I might run into issues when running Linux on it.
I've seen forums where they say some of the peripherals don't work natively
Michael S
@Ohshi60

I'm not familiar with virtual machine. Installed it on my work laptop to explore it and make sure I can make it work before buying my own but the IT guy said I'm not allowed to do any of that stuff. hahaha. So I'm worried that I get my own laptop install it then not able to make it work.

hey @thekholm80 since u mentioned node_modules, can you help me clear up some node stuff?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:06
i can sure try
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:06
okay so i have two files in my routes folder
index.js and pets.js
pets.js has all the routes and stuff and at the end i do a module.exports = router
and index.js is a single line:
```
exports.petRouter = require('./pets')
Then i try to import it in my app.js like so
const petRouter = require("../routes")
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:12
and at this point i am lost :D
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:13
using express?
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:13
yes
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:13
then you just add your import using app.use(petRouter)
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:14
//route handlers
app.use("/pets", petRouter)
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:14
aren't the routes already defined in your pets.js file?
so you shouldn't need to do ('/pets', ... just app.use(petRouter)
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:15
already got that part, i am confused because i get the following error:
Error: Cannot find module '../router'
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:15
try const petRouter = require('../routes/index')
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:16
i am trying to follow along with this guy https://www.rithmschool.com/courses/node-express-fundamentals/mongoose-crud but he confuses router and routes at a certain point, and now my brain is melting :D
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
May 12 2018 02:17
you are exporting it as router const petRouter = require("../router")
would that work?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:18
@Ohshi60 that site is annoying lol i scroll down 2 lines, get a pop up, scroll 2 lines, get a pop up
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:18
Error: Cannot find module '../router'
@thekholm80 yes i know, its awful sry :D But the guides are good
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
May 12 2018 02:19
app.use(petRouter) wouldnt this need to be a node module?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:19
what does your file tree look like?
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:20
hmm might be easier to github it
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:20
main folder
  - router
  -  - is this the directory level of app.js?
because the ../ means "go up a level in the file tree"
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
May 12 2018 02:21
yup but I thought down and then up
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:21
i am confused about that part, since ./ indicates a local file
and following along on the guide
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:22
yeah, ./ means same directory but you've got ../
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:22
not to mention what @anthonygallina1 noticed. Its exported as router but the folder name is routes
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
May 12 2018 02:23
../routes/?
Michael S
@Ohshi60
May 12 2018 02:24
/ root
 -app.js
    /routes
       -index.js
       -pets.js
    /views
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 12 2018 02:24
so yeah you want const petRouter = require('./routes')
just one .
@idris12 Are you looking for power? like x to the y power? then look at pow(double a, double b)
Returns the value of the first argument raised to the power of the second argument. Or are you looking for square root like the square root of 81? then sqrt(double a)
Returns the correctly rounded positive square root of a double value.
