Pretty sure I'll found out in a couple of days there's a method ready in lodash that would have solve it for me

May 31 2018 03:27
@Marmiz i got tired of trying to figure out where to pass stuff, and managing updater functions and all that so i used redux to make life easier. i'd say like 80% of the time redux was used just because i'm lazy

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80

May 31 2018 04:17
@nadiaschutz I don't judge your meal choices.. You're actually most likely WAY more healthier than I am.
I'm tubby and I eat anything that isn't spicy or raw meat.
@nadiaschutz Your bio said that you're: Happy Soft. Developer, ice-cream eater, go-getter.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 04:18
@revisualize some people get upset with me...cuz i give them comments about sugar or gluten...so they feel like i am pushing them dwn...even though ...i don't care what others eat..

Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 04:22
@revisualize kidding
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 04:22
@nadiaschutz I've worked in IT for about 18 years (personally and professionally)
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 04:22
@revisualize and?
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 04:22
Waiter > Phone Tech Support > Senior Tech Support > Customer Service > Technical Customer Service > Enterprise Medical Software Tech Support > Jr Network Admin > Information Technology Administrator (System, Network, Database, and Help Desk) > NOC Admin (3 DCs) > Network Systems Administrator III.
But, I've worked the IT Operations side of things as you can tell.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 04:24
@revisualize so?
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 04:24
@nadiaschutz I don't know how much experience you have interviewing or what but, what concrete recommendations do you have for someone like myself that's worked in the IT Ops Administration side of IT to move out of IT Ops into a dev type role?
Actually, anyone can answer. I've been unemployed since Feb and I've only had 4 job interviews.
I don't know.. I've really been struggling to secure an interview let alone a job. Every interview that I've had I've been turned down for.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 04:30
@revisualize ok...here is my story...i don't have any CS degree...i have 5 years accounting degree+few years work, 3 years interior design +several years working in arch. offices doing drafting and such,...i get jobs pretty easily...u know why? cuz i do everything in big volumes => lots of online classes (i took more than 70 so far)...; lots of reading; lots of projects on my github; lots of jobs applications(i have applied for more than 150 jobs 10 days ago)...=> which gives me lots of interviews and choices where to work
@revisualize plus i study how to answer interview questions(not technical questions)
@revisualize and i read about psychology a lot...so i kind of know what they want me to tell them on the interview
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 04:32
@nadiaschutz Damn, 150 job applications. Are you creating custom cover letters and resumes for each?
It's tough for me to find jobs to apply to.. Let alone 150 of them.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 04:35
@revisualize no))...my logic is different......i made a general cover letter...and general resume.....so i know they will be looking for react, angular and the whole other stuff......i put it all what i have tried to the lettter and resume...but the most important stuff i put on the top......than i just cnahge the name of the company...and send for any position...even for senior....cuz they might not call me for senior but they could have also not senior positions they have not posted yet,,,,,
@revisualize where do you live? what city?
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 04:37
Seattle, Washington, USAmerica, North America, Terra, Sol, Local Interstellar Cloud, Local Bubble, Gould Belt, Orion-Cygnus Arm, Milky Way, Milky Way Subgroup, Local Galactic Group, Virgo Supercluster, Laniakea Supercluster, Observable Universe, Universe
Nadia

Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 04:38
@nadiaschutz I'm quite lazy, I just copy/pasted that
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 04:38
@revisualize try angel.co
idk...you guys should have bunch of jobs websites
do 50 applications per a day...don't read the intro..just click apply...
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 04:40
Just apply without reading?
hmmm... Seems weird.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 04:40
@revisualize u won't remember any of them anyway...
they call and i tell them i don't know who they are...cuz i have appied for more than 150...so they tell me about the company...
unless it's google or microsoft...haha
@revisualize try it...you will be surprised with the results
i got a job in two days in september...did same way

@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:00
@revisualize you know...i know a guy...who found a job in a week ..he got bunch of data with tech companies emails...he also got an automatic email sender....he put a general cover letter saying that he is looking for a job..he got a job in a good company in a week with no experience in canada at all
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:01
@nadiaschutz Damn.. Good on him.
I have an emailer script.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:02

Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:02
I wrote it with PHP
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:02
@revisualize cool!...i am debating to study php or not...i kinda need c#
but lots of companies still looking for php
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:03
@nadiaschutz Let's see.. How well do you know Node.js ?
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:03
@revisualize studying...finishing a udemy class
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:04
You know PHP
Seriously... It's not that hard.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:04
@revisualize thanks!! hallelujah
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:04
The basic concepts are the same.
If I showed you some PHP function... You'd easily tell me what it did.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:05
a company invited me for an interview a week ago just to tell me that i don't know php...lol
i felt kinda dumb at that point...
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:06
@nadiaschutz Seriously?
How hard is it to learn PHP?
What you have to learn how to make your variables differently.
Ok! It's still a variable.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:07
aha...i have impostor syndrome
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:07
If expressions are still the same!
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:07
@revisualize i know...i told them same stuff...they started to tell me i don;t know shit about full stack...
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:07
Strings are still strings.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:08
@revisualize i hate when i have to almost beg for a job...proving my skills....like wtf...look at my code on github and make the decision...
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:09

<?php
function foo($arg_1, $arg_2, /* ..., */ $arg_n)
{
    echo "Example function.\n";
    return $retval;
}
?>
What's that do!? LOL!
in PHP functions are still hoisted.
Arrays are different.
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
May 31 2018 05:10

@nadiaschutz

tell me i don;t know shit about full stack

that's not a very polite thing to say...
I'd say better not to work with people like this (if you can afford the luxury to be picky of course)

Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:10
@revisualize so why ppl write hateful comments about php?
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:11
An array in PHP is actually an ordered map. A map is a type that associates values to keys.
@nadiaschutz I honestly don't know.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:12
@Marmiz i am picky now...i got an offer from another company...in verbal state for now...have not got the papers yet....but i still having interviews...just in case
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:12
@nadiaschutz So, in PHP when someone addresses an "Array" You'd think of it just like a JS Object
Or a Map
Member Items that are accessed via Key Value Pairs
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
May 31 2018 05:13

@nadiaschutz for sure, I still do interviews and working steadily for the same company for almost 2 years...

it's good to keep yourself engaged and "don't settle"... plus it's a good mood boster

Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:13
$array = [
    "foo" => "bar",
    "bar" => "foo",
];
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
May 31 2018 05:14

@nadiaschutz personal opinion.
If you work already with JS and want to study (for your own sake) something new, go for a typed language :smile:

always good to have one under your belt

Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:14
TypeScript
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:14
@Marmiz yeah...i got mood bump after having 3 phone interviews today....had a nice conversation with a guy, we laughed a lot
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
May 31 2018 05:15
@revisualize yep. we use it @ work
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:15
Ahh... Work... I wish I had a job.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:15
@Marmiz i need c#....i want to learn how to build my project in 3D
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
May 31 2018 05:16
@revisualize 90% of the key is confidence!
even if you don't have it... fake it.
It will come :smile:
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:16
@Marmiz so what is typed language?
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:17
@nadiaschutz It's where variable type is declared.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:17
ahh...got ya
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:18
@nadiaschutz Like in JS you can do this:
var num = "str";
num = 5;
num++;
@nadiaschutz In a language where you have to declare the type of the variable.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
May 31 2018 05:18
@revisualize yeah...C# has same for sure...i started a class....need to finish it at some point...for a certification
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:18
@nadiaschutz you'd do something like this:
float pi = 3.14
Then if you tried to do.. pi = "str" you'd get an error.
It would error and/or it wouldn't actually do what you asked it to do.
There are issues with typed languages if you want to reuse a variable name
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
May 31 2018 05:20
@nadiaschutz a language that insult you if you change type of things, makes syntax mistakes and washes whites with coloured
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:21

@Marmiz
May 31 2018 05:21
@nadiaschutz absolutely. you trade "speed" of code for reliability
that's why there are two typed superset for JS as well,
Microsoft's typescript and facebook flow
Joseph
@revisualize
May 31 2018 05:22
@nadiaschutz Typescript would be good to learn if you want to get your feet wet with a typed language.
And ... MS Typescript's official chat is... https://gitter.im/Microsoft/TypeScript
Nadia

I'm busy building an application for someone now using electron - quite the adventure!
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 21:00
i really like electron

@Aimee-MacDonald
May 31 2018 21:01

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 21:01
are you using a framework, or just html/css/js?
Aimée
@Aimee-MacDonald
May 31 2018 21:01
You can even compile native libraries for it!Q
No I haven't started using frontend frameworks yet
I've learned some react, but I'm more interested in doing everything vanilla - make fun if you want :P
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 21:03
nah - everyone walks their own path
except those weird angular people. not sure what they're doing

I still want to look at react native for mobile..
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 21:05
i've not tried react native yet either. it seems PWAs would be so much easier
Aimée
@Aimee-MacDonald
May 31 2018 21:05
I dont even know the difference between vue and angular XP
Yeah exactly.. I have some experience with native android, but it'd be nice to have that cross platform sollution
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 21:07
i played with making some android apps when it first came out, but it never really got me all that inspired
i'm not super in love with Java, that may be part of the problem for me
Aimée
@Aimee-MacDonald
May 31 2018 21:09
Yeah me too! Back in 2010 still..
I quite like java, but I was more interested in game development at the time
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 21:10

Aimée
@Aimee-MacDonald
May 31 2018 21:10

Hi everyone, I'm just realizing that FCC changed their curriculum to the new version, and I'm trying to figure out where the Image Search Abstraction Layer (backend challenge) went / where it fits into the new content...
Does it not count anymore / was it replaced by the exercise tracker project?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 22:50
@shadowimmage have you looked on https://www.freecodecamp.org/portfolio/shadowimmage
oh

it's listed under the legacy back end projects
Chase Sawyer
@shadowimmage
May 31 2018 22:53
nope! Still trying to get my head around the new navigation. OK. I was trying to figure out how the old projects mapped to the new certs - looks like that one ended up in legacy. Thank you @thekholm80

@Smootimus i was looking at the UNO but then i realized i still have a lot of JS and python to learn before i go be really bad at something else
i like the idea of embedded systems though
someday ...
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
May 31 2018 23:12
haha, i am laughing myself so hard, because i tried that so many times, while usually on slack 3 backticks words just smooth but i had problem here. anyway my problem is i need to button 3 BUTTON elements inside div class element , why my code is not working?
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:13
Haha really bad at something else
Yeah they're really fun to play with
embedded systems has been my thing for a bit now

this is 3 buttons inside a div with a class of well
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
May 31 2018 23:14
oh!! i don't need to make class for that then.
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:14
You dont need to declare three individual classes for them
You can nest them under the one div
That has a class of well, like Kyle did yeah
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:15
i see a lot of really cool projects with arduino - and i love what people are doing with raspberry pis and shields too
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:15
Yeah I'm getting a Pi in here as well
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
May 31 2018 23:15

@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:15
Doing it one big order, actually lol
Getting the Ardi Mega, and the Pi with the WiFi, the newest one... I can't remember the Type it said it was
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:16
the b 3+ is the newest i think
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:16
Yeah I think that's it
I was wanting to say a B
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:17
really awesome little computers
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:17
For sure, can put them anywhere and do almost anything you could think of with it
You could be using Python on them too tho, Might be a good learning tool as well
With a Pi anyways, it won't doom you to C or some other low level lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:18
i think i saw an article where someone robbed a casino recently using a pi hooked up to a fish tank thermometer in the casino to get access to the security system
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:18
Yes I hear about that too
It's happening more and more with IoT devices in big buisiness
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:19
that's some Mr Robot level stuff there
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:19
You would be surprised, actually
How many IoT devices out there that are completely UNsecure
No password, or a generic or factory password lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:20
i think that's why windows is switching to a custom linux kernel for their iot stuff now
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:20
So many noobs out there putting products in without securing the devices is behind all the reports of the attacks and stuff =\
Yeah I would say so
THey know
Just like Android
Actually I think they worked with Google quite a bit in regard to that kernel
It is the way to go, tho.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:21
i love linux
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:21
I've been an advocate since I was a wee lad lol
It's so powerful
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:21
but i use debian and they are frustratingly slow at adding things to their repos
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:21
Yeah I agree with that
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:22
so i think i lose a lot of the security by adding outside sources
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:22
Debian is the bastard son now that Ubuntu got it's spotlight
It's a risk, but ya know.. that's also the thing about Linux, even outside sources are under watchful eyes
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:23
i installed ubuntu, opened the console and typed apt-get -y update && apt-get -y upgrade and it told me something else had a lock on apt. so i uninstalled and put debian back on lol
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:23
bahaha
Yeah
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:23
i'm not going to try to learn their package manager
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:23

@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:24
i've heard good things

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:24
i've thought about trying gentoo just to see how awful it is to get going
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:24
I've considered it as well
Actually today I just got a 64 GB jump drive to start doing some work again
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:25
i liked kali a lot, but i don't understand 1/2 of the things that it comes with
i'd like to learn about pen testing someday though
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:25
It's pretty much for pen testing
Penetrating people's networks and stuff
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:25
yeah
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:25
That's what that whole system is built around lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:25
i mean, i've used like air snort and stuff like that, but kali is way more advanced
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:26
Yeah, very much so
It's never really been my thing so much
I mean, maybe when I'm testing the networks I've built
But even then, not really
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
May 31 2018 23:43
Hey Developer, i just finished basic, html, css and bootstrap on FCC, what do you folks recommend now to learn. cause there is so much information and frond end framework, earlier version it was on sequence. ever since the new version came out i am little lost. which one to do ? And when to start projects like portfolio and all. recommnedations?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:44
learning jQuery or javascript would probably be a good way to go
i think learning javascript is more useful, but you know what they say about opinions
Smootimus
@Smootimus
May 31 2018 23:47
I would suggest reading MDN's tutorial in it's entirety
Cause if you're gonna be doing any web developing, like Kyle said Javascript IS gonna be there
Learn it and it's many libraries well
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:49
it's frustrating, starting out, to try to do DOM manipulation with vanilla JS so jQuery might ease some of that pain
but in the long run JS is king
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
May 31 2018 23:49
ever since i started coding which is not long time back, it was just about 3-4 months ago, i started with javascript. did one month bootcamp prep course at app academy in San francisco . that was my first programming language i have ever started, it helped me to understand things about javascript, what i mostly practiced during that month was just a alogrithms but i have never applied alogrithms to anything.
lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
May 31 2018 23:50
that's the good thing about the projects. they give you a task and you get to see how all the pieces go together

want to be web developer as of now.

it seems there's a big push towards frameworks now (like React, Angular, Vue) so I think a strong understanding of JavaScript would be very useful
back end is a little different. a node back end will require strong JS skills
but not all companies run Node on the back end

i'd say a pretty deep understanding of the language. knowing what functional programming is, and how it differs from OOP. knowing the standard built-in objects. knowing prototype
