@coderkarma i personally think it's not enough just to finish few months of a bootcamp.....lot's of ppl finish and get hired ...and than suddenly fired...cuz practice and lot's of practice makes everything...and it's not enough to practice for 3-5-6 months...
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:00
i agree
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:02
I have basic understanding of javascript currently, like i mentioned earlier i was just doing alogrithms. @nadiaschutz you said people got hired and fired wow!!
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:02
@coderkarma that what i heard from an employer...
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:03
@nadiaschutz I Know right, 3-4 months is not enough to be developer, that's why I have started to learn on my own and thinking to join some coding school
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:04
@coderkarma you mean like CS degree?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:04
i think bootcamps are a good 'jumping off point' for learning, but it's not going to give you all the tools you need for success
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:04
I would say do some really deep research on the one you're going to attend
They can be beneficial, but you get out what you put in
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:04
@thekholm80 @Smootimus @nadiaschutz what should i learn then, front end frame work or do whatever FCC front end materials?
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:04
Keep that in mind at all times
But it depends on the price they're asking and the financing big time
Well that depends on your goals really
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:05
please don't pay someone $20k to teach you Ruby
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:05
Right lol
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:05
hahahhaha@ Kyle
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:05
@coderkarma do FCC + lots of udemy classes...it will give you enough of skills to start
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:05
that's what App academy teaches over there
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:06
i think the Odin Project is still Ruby if you want to try it for free
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:06
The thing about bootcamps
I mean, their model is decent for professionals that have an idea of what they're doing
It's a quick way to "immerse" someone in a new technology
That's why they're called immersives
But for someone starting COMPLETELY FRESH
This model isn't so successful
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:07
@Smootimus yeah...i agree
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:07
I mean there HAS been success... but like I said, it's because you get out what you put in
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:08
@nadiaschutz I have just finished responsive web course on udemy but still i feel i need to learn more and i am doing it as well, mostly i felt i need to work on project like making website responsive, making good websites , portfolio etc
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:08
So if you maximize your knowledge base now, it might not hurt if you have the financial means and you find a bootcamp that is offering a decent technology stack and a project you can complete and show employers
I would start with a portolio
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:09
@coderkarma if you buy 40 classes on udemy for $15 each....it will cost you only 600 dollars...and will keep you busy for a year or two
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:09
Get hosting, start working on your portfolio and learn as much as you can in that time
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:09
i like udemy
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:09
It's practical and wouldn't really cost you anything
Yeah Udemy is nice
google Free Udemy Coupons
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:09
@coderkarma finish more!!...repeat repeat...repeat
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:09
You can get $200 courses for free
I've done tons of them and they're helpful.
I would be very wary of the Bootcamps tho
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:10
@Smootimus That is very true.
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:10
@Smootimus i have taken more than 70 so far,,,,,35 still to go
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:10
Because since it caught spotlight in the media, everyone is trying to get rich using the model. They will take advantage, many have got in trouble for doing it
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:10
@nadiaschutz that is true, wowo!!!! you have taken more then 70
that is incredible, i like udemy to @thekholm80
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:11
@coderkarma yeah...it becomes natural when you repeat a lot....also each teacher gives new angle on the same subject....and i learn new tricks all the time from each single video..
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:12
Start working on your Git and Github knowledge and you can start working on Open Source projects to get some experience :)
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:12
that was my plan - tons of open source contributions since i don't want a shiny front end portfolio to get back end jobs
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:13
Haha
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:13
@thekholm80 ahahahaha
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:13
Yeah that would push you in a direction you might not enjoy if design and graphics aren't your thing
I'm trying to get better at it =\ ALways been my Achilles heel
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:13
i'd be happy to never write CSS again
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:14
Oh man
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:14
@thekholm80 why?
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:14
CSS is so hard
Don't let it fool you
It looks like it's easy lol
Wait until you open that can of worms for real
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:14
@coderkarma i just really don't enjoy it at all. making things look good isn't a strength for me
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:14
@thekholm80 lol....i do like JS ....it's nice and logical...css and html for kids in school
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:15
i finally gave up and went back to bootstrap for my last projects
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:15
Ha
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:15
@thekholm80 thats not a bad thing...lot's of companies ask for bootstrap
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:15
@nadiaschutz since you said html and css is only for kids, heart broken.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:16
@nadiaschutz i'd still rather do back end. or ML if i can learn some more python
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:16
@coderkarma nah...you will get to this point...where it will be like math for 2nd grade...
@thekholm80 what is ML?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:17
machine learning
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:17
I mean my background is desktop and network applications and embedded software, web programming was something I avoided
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:17
like tensorflow
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:17
@thekholm80 ahhh...i get excited about machine learning too...
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:17
ML? ML is a programming language on it's own lol
Functional programming language
Like Lisp
Been called "Lisp, with Types!" lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:18
@nadiaschutz my big hold-up there is hardware and getting the large datasets it requires
my internet isn't fast enough to download 1/2 TB files
and i have 0 cuda cores for processing lol
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:19
@thekholm80 u can start on azure ....and maybe cloud9?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:19
i've read some blogs from people who did that - only cost them about $30 a month
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:20
@thekholm80 not bad..,,i would pay for such fun
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:20
how many hours do you guys usually code?
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:20
Hmm...
That a good question
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:20
when i'm working on a project usually 8-10 hours a day. between projects maybe an hour a day
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:21
@coderkarma not much lately....lazy...anxious..there were times i studied 70 hrs per a week
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:21
^
About right
Yeah it flucuates
Depending on what I got going on. Project wise and whatnot
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:22
of course when i say "coding 8-10 hours" i mean writing code for 4-5 hours and yelling at stack overflow for 4-5 hours
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:22
Bahaha
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:22
@coderkarma look it doesn't matter how many hrs other spend....the key is to have consistency and do it at least one hr per a day
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:22
Yeah a third planning, a third doing, a third crying in the corner
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:22
@thekholm80 haha...yep...this happens too
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:23
@thekholm80 @nadiaschutz whenever you start a course on udemy, how did you learn things, like do you follow instructor's code to do project ?
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:23
To a T
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:23
yeah
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:23
Do the project with them
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:23
you type along with them
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:24
And I would even suggest uplodaing it to Github when you do it
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:24
@thekholm80 8-10 hours a day? man..
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:24
To get that experience, AND to make your Github look good with activity
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:24
@coderkarma when i get excited about stuff, i binge on it
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:24
That's ON a project, @coderkarma
Nadia
@nadiaschutz
Jun 01 2018 00:24
@coderkarma yeah...i have two monitors...one with the instructor...another for coding...real school simulation....
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:24
then i might go a month or 2 between projects
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:24
It starts to die down the further into it you get lol
Yeah same here @thekholm80
I float
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:25
@thekholm80 SAW YOUR omnifood,

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80

Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma

Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:29

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:30

PeterWebDev
@PeterWebDev
Jun 01 2018 00:30

Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:31
Eh, I threw one together over a weekend
BUT
It's something I always work on and refine
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:31
i don't recall, sorry. my portfolios are ugly
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:31
So... I guess you could say I haven't really finished LOL
PeterWebDev
@PeterWebDev
Jun 01 2018 00:31
i have a job i wana apply to
having a portfolio to host some stuff would be great
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:31
Hmm Yeah I mean you could throw one together in a night or so probably
PeterWebDev
@PeterWebDev
Jun 01 2018 00:32
i can probably
throw one with a template
but
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:32
Yeah it's key for something like that, I highly suggest it to everyone to build one
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:32
@thekholm80 @Smootimus applied visual design on FCC curiculum, don't know should i learn that or jquery or react
?
PeterWebDev
@PeterWebDev
Jun 01 2018 00:32

Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:32
HOw long before the job thing?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:32
@coderkarma react is going to be really frustrating if you're not strong in JS
PeterWebDev
@PeterWebDev
Jun 01 2018 00:32
i saw it on ad today ill try get something done on the weekend
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:32

Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:32
I mean I would venture to say you have some time
PeterWebDev
@PeterWebDev
Jun 01 2018 00:33
i should be safe
yeh
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:33
Get something in before the weekend is over, tho
So they could see it on Monday or so
And not too much time has slid by for someone else to jump in
PeterWebDev
@PeterWebDev
Jun 01 2018 00:33
i do email templates but its not much pay itself the new ad has that + some extra front end stuff
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:33
Yeah that would be a step up for ya
PeterWebDev
@PeterWebDev
Jun 01 2018 00:34

https://learn.freecodecamp.org/javascript-algorithms-and-data-structures/es6/use-the-rest-operator-with-function-parameters/
The following section seems to explain the challenge rather than the code right above.

The rest operator eliminates the need to check the args array and allows us to apply map(), filter() and reduce() on the parameters array.

Would you consider this an issue?

Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:35
@thekholm80 WELL! i am not that strong in js yet , so i guess i am going to do other things and do those framework later.
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:36
@coderkarma Jquery and React are gonna require a bit of Javascript knowledge to really understand, the Visual Design I'm not too familiar with
Some people say jQuery helped their learning and understanding of Javascript, which I can see to a degree... But I would say if you're not comfy with Javascript to just start with vanilla Javascript and get a firm understanding of that
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:36
by the way @thekholm80 @Smootimus what are your learning resources on javascript ?
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:37
MDN is a great source for that since they're the ones that made Javascript lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:37
i read MDN for everything JS related
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:37
MDN is #1
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:37
w3
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:37
W3schools is okay
For a quick reference
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:37
the important thing is learning enough that you can understand the MDN articles
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:37
Outside of MDN and w3, O'Reilly books lol
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:37
go MDN FOR JS , GOTCHA...
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 00:38
i really like Eric Elliot's medium articles, too
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:38
Yeah that's why I say on MDN, start from the beginning and work through it entirely
It'll take your JS, HTML and CSS knowledge beyond
Oh I got a good JS for you
A project, a practical one you can work through and it'll skyrocket your JS knowledge
One sec
Practical JS
Work through that and you'll have a working functional web app in Javascript. It's REALLY good
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:42
Thanks @Smootimus @thekholm80 have you guys taken web development bootcamp by colt's on udemy?
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:42
I'm not familiar with that one I don't think
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:43

?
Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:58
Hmm, well that's really dependant on you
On how much time you dedicate to it, and how well you understand it
I mean a couple days wouldn't be too far off
Karma Drukpa
@coderkarma
Jun 01 2018 00:59
at least 6 hours a day
Smootimus

Smootimus
@Smootimus
Jun 01 2018 00:59

hello to all! i have a form in html and php processes data of it. i want that when a button is clicked the data is saved to mysql db and a pdf is generated with these data and prompt the user to download it or send via email to the user email. how can i do it with php or js?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 01 2018 12:25
@aita-kane I've been working on a project like that for a while. But it's no where near what you want. For now, it's an online editor like Sublime text with the ability to share the link and others can work with you on your code. The code will be automaticly saved so as long as you have the link, you can visit it again. But it's not possible to create new files / folders or stuff like that. https://www.icecub.nl/PairProgramming
Oh and pls, ignore the Top Menu. That's a work in progress. It doesn't do anything yet

Hello everybody. I coded a MVC from scratch but nothing appears when i go to localhost/globe/. when I reload the page
What i want to have is that:

  • First of all it checks if the Session::set('logged_in', true); if true redirect to Home.php
  • else make the login page appear

I add two .htaccess files and I use a frontcontroller.

I also post a picture so you can see my GLOBE folder structure
ANd thanks for taking your time to help me.

Here is a link so you can see my folder structure:

@aita-kane You're much more likely to find help in our HelpBackEnd room. As a tip though: If you're receiving a blank page in PHP, there's most likely a syntax error somewhere. I suggest making sure error reporting is enabled in your php.ini file. If you don't have access to that file, you can put this into your PHP files:
<?php
ini_set('error_reporting', E_ALL);
error_reporting(1);

/* Your code here */
?>

@aita-kane

@thekholm80 Nothing irrational about that. I've had my fair share of drivers almost running me over because they were paying more attention to their phones than their surroundings. Even on the sidewalk at least 20 meters away from the road!

Just working on the design of my website here
Decided to work with Materialize instead of Bootstrap. I'm honestly impressed with it so far
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 01 2018 16:56
Instead of just pushing columns within a grid row underneath eachother, it allowes you to define the width of each column based on the size of the screen and keeps it that way. Which is very usefull for columns that have a 100vh height
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 01 2018 16:57
i figured i'd use materialize for my pinterest clone
i was using react-bootstrap but they don't have a component for cards

I've only just scratched the surface with Materialize. So no idea what it's capable of yet. But if you go to my website: https://www.icecub.nl/ and resize your browser slowly from normal to mobile like viewport, you'll see what I mean. The size of elements adept to it instead of being pushed around

What exactly I should do
Help me
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 01 2018 17:11
@DaNgLiN You should start by moving the CSS to the CSS field. Also you might want to take a look at the URLs for Contact and Portfolio. You've switched those around
After that you should actually make some content for the website. Right now, you've got some design and a menu, but nothing else. There's nothing on your website except a background image

@nalinpuri It means the em tag should be inside the p tag, but outside of the content. So <p>content</p> becomes <p><em>content</em></p>

Help! I just logged on for the first time in like six months... I know shame on me. But anyway, FCC didn't give me an option to access my old account and all is lost! Instead, it told me to enter my email and then a verification code. Which when i was done, created a new account for some reason. How can i recover my old account?

The div element should have a linear-gradient background with the specified direction and colors.
my test is not passing.
even though @thekholm80 color seems right.

Use a linear-gradient() for the div element's background, and set it from a direction of 35 degrees to change the color from #CCFFFF to #FFCCCC.
your colors don't seem to be the same as the instructions require

@coderkarma close
you're missing one color
linear-gradient(direction, from, to)
Use a linear-gradient() for the div element's background, and set it from a direction of 35 degrees to change the color from #CCFFFF to #FFCCCC.
