Hey everyone, I have a question if I may... (like usual though...)

An error has come up while using Vue js, saying Uncaught ReferenceError: Vue is not defined...
My general code is as follows

<template>
    //most of my code here...
</template>

<script>
new Vue ({
    el: '#app',
    //etc.....
});
</script>

<script src="https://unpkg.com/babel-polyfill/dist/polyfill.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://unpkg.com/vue/dist/vue.js"></script>
<script type="https://unpkg.com/vuetify@1.0.18/dist/vuetify.min.js"></script>

And I also have:

import Vue from 'vue';
import Vuetify from 'vuetify';
import 'vuetify/dist/vuetify.min.css';
import Datetime from 'vue-datetime';
import 'vue-datetime/dist/vue-datetime.css';
import Router from 'vue-router';
import TimeTracker from '@/components/TimeTracker';
import 'babel-polyfill';
import 'material-design-icons-iconfont/dist/material-design-icons.css';

window.Vue = Vue;
Vue.use(Vuetify);
Vue.use(Datetime);
Vue.use(Router);
If anymore info is needed, please let me know, but I have been stuck on this for a little while...
Thanks in advance

@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 04:32
@Boris1011 how do you bundle the app? Webpack?
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 04:33
I think so... or vue-cli.
To be quite honest I'm not entirely sure which one...
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 04:33
@Boris1011 vue-cli uses webpack
so why?
<script src="https://unpkg.com/vue/dist/vue.js"></script>
<script type="https://unpkg.com/vuetify@1.0.18/dist/vuetify.min.js"></script>
anyway move those above the script tags
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 04:34
Actually, sorry the babel-polyfill one I likely don't need since I installed that one, but if I don't have the other two, than the whole thing blanks out...
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 04:35
@Boris1011 move those above script tags. You are calling Vue before even loading it on page
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 04:38
:worried: still doesn't work.
A question then, does the import section need to be in the same file as the <template> section??
Actually likely not, because one is a js file and the other is .vue...
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 04:39
@Boris1011 I's confused on how your app is bundled tho.
anyway the script tags with the vue dist are in your main html file? (index.html) or whatever?

also this:

const Vue = window.vue;

looks super suspicious. I think you are overwriting the Vue instance

Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 04:46
This is how everything is linked, if that is what you are looking for??
https://s22.postimg.cc/6bushxir5/Side_section.jpg
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 04:57
@Boris1011 no... how you actually build your assets/script/style [...] (if you build them)
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:01
ok slightly confused... :confused:
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:02
@Boris1011 let's take a step back. Was your app working sometimes before that error (Vue is not defined?) as intended?
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:02
Yes, it was...
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:03
so when did it stop? have you actually changed something?
again that Vue = window.vue is suspicious. Have you added it recently?
(personal side note: not knowing how your app is working under the hood is not 100% recommended :smile: )
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:05
not exactly before that error, but yes... First there came up a few errors in relation to "Vue Warn: Property or method not defined on instance but referenced during render, then I changed something ( don't ask me exactly what, I have a particularly bad memory...) and the next thing to fix is this 'Vue not defined...'
window.vue was a recommendation to help fix this 'Vue not defined', but it doesn't seem to work...
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:06
i actually think it may be the root of your problem
but just as a try, move the script tags that imports vue dist in your html head and see what happens
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:08
hmm not exactly the root.... still there...
I suppose there is a problem if I don't have a html file as such??
It is in my TimeTracker.vue file as <template lang="html">...
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:11
@Boris1011 so you don't have a html file
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:11
no.....
:worried:
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:11
weird, usually you have even just a blank page where you inject your JS
and this is by your choice or was suggested somewhere?
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:13
A work colleague helped me set this up and is how I have been continuing so far.
Mind you, I did have some issues with a computer where I lost my working file...
So this has been my second shot at it, and I have had a fair few issues since...
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:16

it's the weirdest bootstrap I've seen so far.
It goes beyond my knowledge why you want to do a thing like this.

I don't think I can help you too much on this.
My suggestion would be to actually create a brand new project using the official vue-cli.
Then copy there only the relevant part.
(no window.vue - script with dist tag...)

but it's up to you

Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:18
Ok thanks for the suggestion... How do I go about using the official vue-cli??
At the moment this is how I start the projects...
https://github.com/vuejs-templates/webpack
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:20

....

the first command is:
npm install -g vue-cli

if you used it means you are using webpack and you have installed vue-cli

Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:20
Right, so I was already using it??
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:21
so you are using webpack :smile:
you should see at the root of your project some webpack.config files
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:22
Yeah..!!
Hey, actually.....!!!
Right, so I found the .html file, put the script tags in and then Vue is now defined....
But!! 49 more errors, some of which are Property or Method not defined on the instance but referenced during render (which i have seen before... :worried: ) and also Unknown custom element....
I'll see if I can figure that one out...
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:26
@Boris1011 ok so first thing first... you don't need those dist. You should have Vue installed in your project and webpack is bundeling it

now in your main.js (or whatever you have called it) keep only one import Vue from 'vue'

then have a bunch of Vue.use(stuff)

and at the end a single

new Vue({
// with a render function
})
then in your .vue component file export default your script without defining, re-writing or calling any new Vue instance
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:38
So in terms of the main.js file, I have not added anything to that, but am adding all of those imports (like for vuetify, etc...) into the index.js file which is located in the router folder
Instead of having all of the import Datetime from 'vue-datetime'; (and others) as part of the router folder, should they be in the main.js file?
(if that makes sense)
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 12 2018 05:48
absoultely should be in main. That's the entry point of your app. You declare there what Vue should use and then create a new Vue instance... only there
you have multiple vue instances created at the same time in your page
Boris
@Boris1011
Jun 12 2018 05:54

So then for this part:
" then in your .vue component file export default your script without defining, re-writing or calling any new Vue instance"

Does it end up working as:

export default {
    data: {
        //etc...
}
}

@thekholm80 hey Kyle, I'm starting to learn python, any suggestoins? (text editor, websites, books)
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 12 2018 17:18
nearly everything i've learned, oddly enough, has been through codewars. i google like crazy to solve katas then look at other people's answers to get an idea of better ways to do it. it's probably not the ideal way to learn though
i tried doing the py course on code academy but their editor was way too buggy and drove me nuts
as for text editors, i've liked using VS Code - it comes out-of-the-box with some goodies for python and will suggest stuff like linters to make your life easier
Nazar
@IsaakNazar
Jun 12 2018 17:22
@thekholm80 I hope python will be mush easier to learn, after JS :)
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80

in the root directory of your project
the .gitignore is a kind of config file that git will look at when it's interacting with github. anything you list in that file will be ignored by git

i blame py for that, there's no meaningful way to split things up like you can in JS
const x = (eval)
  ? this
  : that;
vs
x = this if eval else that

Question: Will this be able to handle Microsoft Paint? I need an answer asap, my boss is getting impatient
Answer: It really depends on the size of your monitor. It should run fine on any screen up to 27 inches. Things will start to slow down on any thing bigger than 32 inchs.

I'm learning JS promises and it's a lil bit confusing to work with axios at the beginning. Is it normal?
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
Jun 12 2018 19:29
Normal to be confused by promises are first? yeah
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 12 2018 19:29
kind of. promises are amazing but it's a tough concept to get the hang of
do you understand event handlers?
like onClick() or onMouseDown()?
Mehdi Amlal
@mehdiamlal
Jun 12 2018 19:30
Yes
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 12 2018 19:31
that's kind of how i think about promises - you call the function and it returns a promise, which then 'listens' like an event handler for the promise to be resolved or rejected
then stuff happens in response
if you learn the async & await syntax it's really easy to use promises
Mehdi Amlal
@mehdiamlal
Jun 12 2018 19:33
So response in Axios, for what I understand, is the equivalent of response in request
while response.data is the equivalent of body
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 12 2018 19:35
it depends on how you're structuring your code. if you're using promise chains it would be something like
axios.get(url).then(response => {
  // data is in response.data
});
Mehdi Amlal
@mehdiamlal
Jun 12 2018 19:36
Yes I got it, thank you so much :smile:
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 12 2018 19:36
with async/await & es6 destructuring it would be
async function getData() {
  const { data } = await axios.get(url);
  // data variable holds response
}
getData();

starting a new Webpack/React project with ESLint. I'm getting this error about end of lines. Anyone got a clue about it? I think I got the error on other projects, but when I added my linebreak-style ESLint rule previously the problem disappeared, not this time. Which makes me wonder what's a way to stop the error.
