hello im a super beginner on javascript and I'm stuck on the following code

Basic JavaScript: Understanding Uninitialized Variables
When JavaScript variables are declared, they have an initial value of undefined. If you do a mathematical operation on an undefined variable your result will be NaN which means "Not a Number". If you concatenate a string with an undefined variable, you will get a literal string of "undefined".

Initialize the three variables a, b, and c with 5, 10, and "I am a" respectively so that they will not be undefined.

a should be defined and evaluated to have the value of 6
b should be defined and evaluated to have the value of 15
c should not contain undefined and should have a value of "I am a String!"
Do not change code below the line

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 00:10
@Christelle7 it's asking you to assign an initial value to the variables declared at the top
var x; // this is declaring a variable named 'x'
var y = 'hello'; // this is declaring a variable named 'y' and assigning it an initial value of 'hello'

@thekholm80 my previous webpack/react app still does not generate an eol error. so, there's gotta be a configuration difference causing the error, that's my working guess.

@bjorno43 winter is here, the wall is down and the army of the dead is on the march, it just took a while to develop the story. it's 7 kindoms for goodness sake, that's a lot of story

Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43

Ye I know the wall is down. I actually never saw any of the seasons except the last one. Still know pretty much what it's all about. That's what I ment "same, but different". Sure I've missed a lot of character developments, yet with a couple of flashbacks you know pretty much what happened
Henry
@GitHub-Henry
Jun 13 2018 03:18
@bjorno43 you unfortunately have missed a whole lotta really good story telling
that's like saying, I know France has that tower, and the people eat fish, snails and drink wine, so I don't think it's worth visiting, cause I pretty much know what it's like
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 03:20

For the responsive web design projects, are you allowed to make your page about something else completely, but still make your page structurally compliant with the tests?
e.g. instead of a tribute page, an article style page

@casee8 You call the function showposition() on line 34 with no parameters
That function expects a position parameter.
I believe the callback you provide on line 30 should suffice so line 34 can be deleted?

what if remove tostring?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 14:17

@moigithub it asks you to use toString()

In the route app.get('/now', ...) chain a middleware function and the final handler. In the middleware function you should add the current time to the request object in the req.time key. You can use new Date().toString(). In the handler, respond with a JSON object, taking the structure {time: req.time}.

Jun 13 2018 20:58
do you want it to fade in, or just instantly appear?
Ammiel
@aemc
Jun 13 2018 20:58
instant appear
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 20:59
then childDivSelector:hover { opacity: 1; }
so if you give it an id it would be #id:hover
or if it has a class, use that instead

@aemc
Jun 13 2018 21:00

Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:01
for me css is the simple solution, so i've never bothered to learn to do it in JS
but it is possible
Ammiel
@aemc
Jun 13 2018 21:02
is it possible in css?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:03
you could do something like
// parent component
constructor(props) {
  super(props);
  this.state = { childOpacity: 0 };
}
updateOpacity() {
  this.setState({ childOpacity: this.state.childOpacity === 0 ? 1 : 0 });
}
render() {
  return (
    <div onMouseEnter={ this.updateOpacity } onMouseLeave={ this.updateOpacity }>
      <Child opacity={ this.state.childOpacity } />
    </div>
  );
}
Ammiel
@aemc
Jun 13 2018 21:03
basically when I hover over a parent component, the child component will know about the mouseover event
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:04
I've never done any React. But the idea for JS is quite simple. Basicly you create a custom event handler for mouseenter. Then you'll change the CSS of the element with JS. Create another custom event handler for mouseleave that changes the CSS back
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:05
then in the child component set the style explicitly
Ammiel
@aemc
Jun 13 2018 21:05
ill give it a shot @thekholm80
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:05

onClick onContextMenu onDoubleClick onDrag onDragEnd onDragEnter onDragExit
onDragLeave onDragOver onDragStart onDrop onMouseDown onMouseEnter onMouseLeave
onMouseMove onMouseOut onMouseOver onMouseUp
ugh i forgot to bind the class method too lol but you get the idea

Jun 13 2018 21:12

@thekholm80 Hey m8 :wave: I haven't had time to continue working on it yet. The conflicting data being returned is giving me headache the moment I think about it, ghehe

Jun 13 2018 21:13
ah ok just curious
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:13
@bjorno43 yeah that sounds rough
@aemc i mean i could be wrong, don't just take my word for it
i'm just a random dude in an internet chat room
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:15
The issue is that Gitter doesn't return the username with each message. It only returns the username if the user is different than the user that sent the previous message or if enough time has passed since the previous message. And that makes it a bit hard
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:15
that makes sense. if i send several messages in a row it doesn't show my avatar every time
or timestamp them all
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:15
Exactly
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:16
so you have to cache the conversation
and roll back to the last message with user data
or, update a user object every time user data is sent?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:16
So to solve that issue, I basicly have a condition that checks if a username is present. If so, it saves it in a global var untill overwritten by another username that was present
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:17
that seems like the way i'd go about it
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:18
But the problem is that the Mutation Observer followes the DOM very specificly. And for some reason, the first message returns a different DOM tree than is present when you inspect the element. And that's what's giving me a headache
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:18
wait, are you scraping the page?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:18
Yup
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:18
oh wow
i guess i just assumed there was an api
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:19
Nope. The whole idea is to use basic JS only
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:19
oh man, no beautiful soup
doesn't sound fun lol
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:20
Well yes and no. You get to work with the Mutation Observer when doing that. And that's a very interesting subject :smile:
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:21
so the mutation observer is to avoid timed scraping and manually checking for changes?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:23
Yes. The mutation observer works exactly like a callback function. It's set on a specific element and as soon as the DOM within that element changes, the callback function is called. If you'd rely on events or timers to do that, the whole browser would become slow and unresponsive
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jun 13 2018 21:23
makes sense

Jun 13 2018 21:27
@bjorno43 i think everything should have a dark theme option, or browsers should be able to inject css to fix ultra-bright sites
i built a chrome extension for repl.it to do just that lol their site is too bright
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:28
@thekholm80 True. But this edition has a Dark Theme for the browser itself. Very cool!

Bjorn van de Peut

Yes. It includes experimental dev tools that didn't make it to Release candidates yet

Seems easier in FF

I like the beziar curves in Chrome and live edit. I use both for dif reasons. Those new tools sound like worth having a look at.
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 21:36
But they're making clear that this browser is ment for Developers only. Its version is between Nightly and Release candidates of FF to provide devs with the latest tools available while making sure it's only updated with safe Nightly builds. But bugs can still be present
