So I need some advice...
I have two job offers. 2k/yr difference in pay.
Jr. Sys Admin for a company with a desk that I'd be at every day. The commute is 15min from my house by bus.
Other is for a Managed Service Provider where I'd be doing IT support for smaller companies that don't have an IT department. I'd be a Network Engineer commuting around to the businesses doing support every day.
I don't drive so, I'd need to "Uber Everywhere". I'd be working with random tech solving random issues all the time.
I've been told by my sister that constantly commuting around gets old REAL fast.... Like real fast.

Hello everyone, I am working on simple two page website. The first page is login page and second is normal information page. I am using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Christopher McCormack

You're going to lose state between pages unless you pass along some query parameters. I can't think of another way than that but maybe someone else knows

Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Jun 23 2018 19:53
@dishap707 maybe something like a href="./info.html?username=blah&password=blah", dynamically filling those in from the login page and validating them in info.html
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 19:53
There's not rly a reliable way to do this pure client side. Technically you could write out a cookie with Javascript and use that as authentication. But it doesn't allow you to reliably limit the amount of users

It's basicly the same, but free and open source. Also, I don't have an official mailserver. So it's not very usefull as a production server if you need to be able to mail users through the website (like account activation). It's more usefull as a test server
May Kittens Devour Your Soul

Jun 23 2018 20:43
can anyone explain to me why smth like this aint possible?
like, what would it take that if I post smth in input to show in JS source?
could that be smth that codepen people could implement or smth?
Bjorn van de Peut

Jun 23 2018 20:46
Honestly I don't know anything about VUE, so I have no idea
May Kittens Devour Your Soul
@diomed
Jun 23 2018 20:46
I'm not talking about vue, but in general
like if u used anything at all and entered into input, why is it not possible to ADD it in JS panel instantly
tesla.min.png
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 20:51
Sorry I was giving the lady some attention as well. What exactly do you mean? Like you enter something in an input panel and it appears directly into the source code of the JS panel?
May Kittens Devour Your Soul
@diomed
Jun 23 2018 20:51
yes
Aditya
@ezioda004
Jun 23 2018 20:53
@diomed Why do you want to do that? The panels I think are suppose to be like static files (local files that you cant modify on fly)
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 20:53
I guess it should be possible, but it completely depends on how it's developed. I mean, I did something simular on my Pair Programming Codepen-like app. Every change to the source is live updated to the result. Not like a reload or anything, but directly updated. The principle should be the same
May Kittens Devour Your Soul
@diomed
Jun 23 2018 20:56
I wanna modify on fly. I guess I'll have to ask in spectrum. hmmm. maybe they'd consider
alpox
@alpox
Jun 23 2018 20:56
@diomed The files are static and should not be changed by some code.
May Kittens Devour Your Soul
@diomed
Jun 23 2018 20:56
why not?
maybe they could add some toggle option if we want it to?
alpox
@alpox
Jun 23 2018 20:57
because thats how programming works :D
You usually don't let code change the source code. Ofc. there are code generators, but they are not very dynamic.
May Kittens Devour Your Soul
@diomed
Jun 23 2018 20:58

Bjorn van de Peut

@bjorno43 Why?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 22:42
My employer doesn't want his private home address in the privacy statement and doesn't own a company. Without an address, I can't make the site GDPR complaint. And I refuse to work on an illegal project
Especially since it was supposed to be hosted on one of my servers
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 22:45
Oh i hear there is link tax comming too.
Sorry to hear that.
Ya the internet the last frontier for free speech.
@bjorno43 I hope you get more customers.
@bjorno43 You know about servers right?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 22:48
Thanks. It'll be fine :)
Ye I do
Well, depending on what kind of servers of course, ghehe
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 22:49
Does allowing the user access to delete there data broaden the attack surface?
Honest question. Been going through my mind
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 22:51
If you code it properly not. But you need to be very carefull about it. Like, what laws does your country have about keeping data for criminal investigations? According to the GDPR, users are allowed to remove or request removal of their data, unless other laws prevent you from doing that
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 22:54
Yes good question
And if you are hosted what does the server hold.
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 22:55
Say for example you're running chatsite and it's being used by children. Where there's children, there will be pedophiles. Especially on the internet. If law enforcements are investigating it, it's not very helpfull if you deleted all the data
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 22:55
I meen the host
true
it does seem it can be detrimental in some cases
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 22:56
I don't fully understand your question. Do you mean who's responsible for the data? Like the server owner or the user that's hiring space on the server?
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 22:57
Well I meen the server owner has things a normal user IE that bought space doesnt have access to
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 22:58
Ye obviously
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 22:58
:smile:
probably IP addies etc
Umm.....
And a user that doesnt know how to dump cookies Is getting a escalation of rights?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:00
But that's where the privacy law comes in again. Like, if you hire space on my server, I'm not allowed to monitor what you're doing there unless that's stated in a contract. I'm not allowed to collect data either. You are completely responsible for it. I'm just providing you with the means to do it. That's all
I'm not exactly sure how that works, but you can delete cookies through your website for the user. Just change the expiration date of them
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:02
I dunno it is what it is
To bad it had to come to this.
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:04
Luckily though you don't have to worrie about that. Your privacy statement must include an explanation on how to delete cookies from a browser. After that, it's not your responsibility anymore
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:04
I never ran banners or adds Old School. Used to be considered not right.
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:05
Ye me neither
But if you're worried about it, there are plenty of GDPR privacy policy generators out there. All you have to do is provide the nessesary data about what you're doing on your website and you'll get a full privacy policy you can put on your site. After that you're fine :)
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:08
Oh i was thinking I would have to put one of those annoying pop ups I see all over now. That probably set a cookie.
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:08
Nope. That's only nessesary if you have tracking cookies. Pure functional cookies for your website don't require it
All they require is that you inform the user about it in your privacy policy
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:09

Like for example that any user agreement or privacy policy is completely invalid in the EU unless you're able to download and/or print them

@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:13
Hmmmm
but you can print anything on screen

@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:14
Though I think they made an ammentment to that recently that they must always be "available" to the user
Ye I know. But it comes down to ease-of-use. Like a print button and a download button

I wonder if the US will come up with there own. Governance?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:17
From what I've heard is that the US is working on their own version of GDPR. But as US government is much more influenced by companies, it's not so easy
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:19
I wonder if site owners could charge more to connections from GDPR areas?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:20
I'm not formilliar enough with the law to be able to answer that. But I do know that certain forms of discrimination are completely legal. Like blocking access to users that use an AdBlocker in their browser for example. So blocking access to GDPR areas is completely legal as well
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:23
I was just thinking out load I meen some one has to code the changes
And that should be worth some thing maybe
And pr
Free pr they are clever.
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:25
However, I'm 100% certain you're not allowed to charge users for services that are mandatory by the GDPR. Like for example the GDPR gives a user the right to request insight in all their privacy data on the server and request the owner of the domain to send their data towards another domain or themselves. You can't charge a user for that
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:27
Well the intent is good
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:27
That's what's giving me a headage the most btw. Because I can already see a bunch of users providing me an Excel sheet with their data and telling me good luck with implementing it into my system. Especially if their data is using a different form of encryption
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:27
yikes
Lots of work but there are programs Even still lots of work
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:28
Yup
That's why I give a very big shout out for a standard in this form of data sharing
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:29
can you ssend it encrypted :smile:
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:30
Ghehe
But ye, the biggest problem is that you can't automate it without a standard
One website gives an Excel sheet with the username in the first cell and the other with the first name of the user. If there's no standard in where which data is to be found, it can only be done manually
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:39
So if your on a server that only gets mail internal and they request you send to them then they email headers with info on you. It is what it is.
seems kinds back wards though
I meen owners privacy
Oh wells
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:40
Yup. That's pretty much it
That's why you should at least provide an automated download service on your website where users can download their data themselves. Just to protect your own privacy
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:41
True
Probably with code to prevent pulling to many times
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:43
Nah I wouldn't do that. That's dangerously messing around with the law. As it's no longer always available to the user
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:44
Fire up those extra cpu's
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:44
Instead you could limit the amount of downloads from a single user to max 1 at a time and if you want, even cap the download speed
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:45
Ah
With I am not a robot too
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:46
Ye. Though there's no point for users to use VPN's or proxies to override the download limits
I mean, the user data is obviously only available to a user that's logged in. So they have no access to the data unless logged in. Even if they change their IP or God knows what else, you still know who they are
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:49
Thats good
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:54
Oh you should never limit the download to 1 btw. Unless you only soft limit it through code and not actually on server connections. Problem is that if you limit it to 1, the user is no longer able to browse your website untill the download is finished :laughing:
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:54
not good
Could you put instructions Right click and save page as? :imp:
imp :point_up:
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:56
No because then you're providing the data in form of HTML code and that's not providing easy access to it, lol
anthonygallina1
@anthonygallina1
Jun 23 2018 23:57
:smile:
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:57
At least, not for the user :P
anthonygallina1

Cnrtl Alt PrtScrSysRq three buttons Teasing
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 23 2018 23:59
But what are we talking about here? It's just a very small amount of textual data. The user probably can't click fast enough on the download button to actually cause any issues for your server, ghehe
