Hi, can somebody help me with this FCC challenge (Responsive Web Design Principles: Make Typography Responsive)?

The guideline to finish this is as below but it doesn't say correct answer.
Set the width of the h2 tag to 80% of the viewport's width and the width of the paragraph as 75% of the viewport's smaller dimension.
What's wrong with my simple code??

<style>
  h2 {
      vw: 80vw;
  }

  p {
      vmin: 75vmin;
  }
</style>

<h2>Importantus Ipsum</h2>
<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Vivamus quis tempus massa. Aenean erat nisl, gravida vel vestibulum cursus, interdum sit amet lectus. Sed sit amet quam nibh. Suspendisse quis tincidunt nulla. In hac habitasse platea dictumst. Ut sit amet pretium nisl. Vivamus vel mi sem. Aenean sit amet consectetur sem. Suspendisse pretium, purus et gravida consequat, nunc ligula ultricies diam, at aliquet velit libero a dui.</p>

@heegu0311 i think you may have misunderstood the lesson explanation. they are units of measure, not css properties. if i were going to set the height of an element to 80% of the viewport's smallest dimension:
element {
  height: 80vmin;
}
and if i want to set the height to 90% of the viewport's height:
element {
  height: 90vh;
}
sorry fixed the first one
so you want to set the width according to the instructions

@thekholm80 Oh, Thanks! You're right.. I changed for vw to width and then it works!

Hi guys
So I am trying to practice OOP in Javascript and i am getting this error
unknown: Unexpected token (2:32)
  1 | class Person {
> 2 |   constructor({brialliance = 70%, mindSet = growth || fixed, integrity = 30%} = {}) {
    |                                 ^
  3 |     this.brialliance = brialliance;
  4 |     this.mindSet = mindSet;
  5 |     this.integrity = integrity;
I want to set 70% as a default value
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 03:09
i think you want to wrap it in quotes "70%"
Adegoke Fred
@Frediflexta
Jul 03 2018 03:09
Okay, will try that
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 03:09
since without the quotes it's a mathematical operation
Adegoke Fred
@Frediflexta
Jul 03 2018 03:10
Oh! right, that makes sense
Lemme try
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 03:10
you're saying set brialliance equal to the remainder of dividing 70 by ,
Adegoke Fred
@Frediflexta
Jul 03 2018 03:14
OKay, It worked

I have a question, is there a way to randomly select between the two "Or" values?
Like if i console log , let fred = new Person({brilliance: "50%"})
If there a way to randomly make mindSet pick between fixed or growth
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 03:19
you can use something like
const options = [value1, value2];
const rand = Math.floor(Math.random() * 2);
const choice = options[rand];

Guys have question, which do you prefer most. having a sticky nav bar in your site or not?
May Kittens Devour Your Soul
@diomed
Jul 03 2018 07:16
you wrote new line below, but that's not good, task asks of you to edit around first line
@champolot depending on why is it sticky
is it from jam or something else
Fernando L. Estuesta
@champolot
Jul 03 2018 07:17
could you give me a situation how to use the sticky nav bar most?
or could be a situation that you really need to have a sticky nav
May Kittens Devour Your Soul
@diomed
Jul 03 2018 07:19
if you have one page site, that's divided into sections, you definitely need sticky nav, if you don't have any other navigation
it is the best if navbar is hidden until you scroll up a little, then it falls down for you to see it.
that's my preference

In the challenge, they want you to move the element right and top direction, 15px and 10px, respectively. Then what you have to put is the opposite offset.

@danbel91 and set it from a direction of 35 degrees to change the color from #CCFFFF to #FFCCCC.

 you should look at the example to see how it's done, but not to write values from it

Jul 03 2018 13:13
@diomed The problem is that your h3 element is display: block. For this element, you need it to be inline
As example:
<h3>
      <span class="underlined underlined--thin">Theming</span>
</h3>
span is inline - so this works
But ofc. you have to adjust the font stuff a bit again :D
May Kittens Devour Your Soul

@adamfaraj how bout a dropdown navigation?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jul 03 2018 14:50
@adamfaraj Well, yes and no. Yes I can easily solve the issue by using a grid instead of flexbox. But the result is not the same as what you had. So looking into that
@adamfaraj I mean, for now the result is like this:
afbeelding.png
Adam Faraj
@adamfaraj
Jul 03 2018 14:52
hmm
@bjorno43 got it
grid-template-columns: 33% 33% 33%;
that worked
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jul 03 2018 14:58
@adamfaraj User auto instead. Otherwise you're missing a percentage
Adam Faraj
@adamfaraj
Jul 03 2018 15:01
@bjorno43 auto didn't work. i'll be okay with missing percentage. haha
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jul 03 2018 15:02
@adamfaraj I mean grid-template-columns: auto auto auto; of course :P and otherwise at least do grid-template-columns: 33% 34% 33%;. Trust me, you're going to get design issues later on if you add more to that page

Anyone know a workaround for the React sections that keep crashing due to out of memory errors? Specifically, the "Create a Component with Composition" and "Use React to Render Nested Components" sections. I have not tested further sections.
Tried on two different machines, cleared cache/history, cleared local storage
Both machines are OSx (Sierra) - one iMac and one MacBook Pro
Have not tested on a Windows or Linux machine

@cmccormack

One sec, thanks

```const ChildComponent = () => {
return (
<div>
<p>I am the child</p>
</div>
);
};
class ParentComponent extends React.Component {
constructor(props) {
super(props);
}
render() {
return (
<div>
<h1>I am the parent</h1>
{ / change code below this line / }
    { /* change code above this line */ }
  </div>
);
}
};```
Jul 03 2018 16:56
what is there a closure?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 16:56
a closure is a function that returns a function
iirc
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Jul 03 2018 16:57
A closure is the combination of a function and the lexical environment within which that function was declared.
so the returned function is still bound to the original function from which it was returned
it has access to the state of the outer function
May Kittens Devour Your Soul
@diomed
Jul 03 2018 16:57
lexical environment. phrases like this make me drink
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Jul 03 2018 16:58
The word "lexical" refers to the fact that lexical scoping uses the location where a variable is declared within the source code to determine where that variable is available. Nested functions have access to variables declared in their outer scope.
don't know if that helped one bit
I don't know when use reduce, when we need map, filter. etc
whenever i see things for looping, i always think of standard for loop
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 20:05
the key there is "what do i want returned?"
if you have an array and want:
  1. a single value, use reduce()
  2. a different array of same length, use map()
  3. a different array of different length, use filter()
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Jul 03 2018 20:06
@coderkarma map is to do some work to each value in an array, filter is to return an array with some items removed, and reduce is to calculate a final value from an array
"When the viewport is 400px or more, container class should have a grid-template-areas property in which the footer and header areas occupy the top and bottom rows respectively and advert and content occupy the left and right columns of the middle row."
@media (min-width: 400px){
.container{
/ change the code below this line /
  grid-template-areas:
    "advert header"
    "advert content"
    "advert footer";
/* change the code above this line */
}
@nsanity1 wrap your code in three backticks (```) on their own line so we can read it properly please
@diomed
Jul 03 2018 20:29
damn, I should really learn that grid
Lee Arnold
@nsanity1
Jul 03 2018 20:29
ok...didn't know that...sorry
``` @media (min-width: 400px){
.container{
/ change the code below this line /
  grid-template-areas:
    "advert header"
    "advert content"
    "advert footer";

/* change the code above this line */
}```

@cmccormack most of it is in backticks, u ...u ... u... nitpicker
Lee Arnold
@nsanity1
Jul 03 2018 20:30
is it all on a single line?

Jul 03 2018 20:35
obviously the thing u have to change is in .container area
u gotta have some properties there with some values
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 20:35
hmm, i thought i understood it but i was wrong
i should learn grid i guess lol
Lee Arnold
@nsanity1
Jul 03 2018 20:36
lol
normally they give you a little more to go with...this one kind of leaves you hanging
if you follow the code above it would be the grid-template-columns and grid-template-rows that get adjusted....i'm just not sure how to get it to do the thing in one column part
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jul 03 2018 20:39
@nsanity1 We have a very nice video about CSS grid on FCC's youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6CBKf8K_Ac&t
It'll teach you all about it in depth
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 20:41
yay i did it lol
grid is kind of neat
@nsanity1 so i think the keys to remember here are
  1. you need to define grid-template-columns
  2. you need to define grid-template-rows
  3. you need to specify what should be in each row/column in grid-template-areas
each new line in grid-template-areas represents a single row, each area should be represented
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jul 03 2018 20:45
I didn't believe it was possible, but I found something worse than mosquitos to have in your house.. fruit flies!
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 20:45
oh no
May Kittens Devour Your Soul
@diomed
Jul 03 2018 20:46
@bjorno43 how are they worse?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 20:47
@nsanity1 so in:
grid-template-areas:
        "advert header" // row 1, col 1 is advert, col 2 is header
        "advert content" // row 2, col 1 is advert, col 2 is content
        "advert footer"; // row 3, col 1 is advert, col 2 is footer

@diomed They multiply faster than you can kill them! Where there's 10, there's a thousend the next day
Lee Arnold
@nsanity1
Jul 03 2018 20:48
@bjorno43 they do suck....put a cup out and pour some apple cider vinegar in it...they will flock to it and dive in drowning themselves
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 20:48
then drink the vinegar. you'll absorb their powers
Lee Arnold
@nsanity1
Jul 03 2018 20:48
lol
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jul 03 2018 20:49

my way is really, really less-than-optimal though lol
i always think "less code is better" not "faster code is better"
alpox

@thekholm80 Yea same, mine is not optimal either but works

const sumFibs=(num)=>(fib=((s,l=0,n=1,m=0)=>(n%2?n<=s&&(m+=n)&&0:0)||n>s?m:fib(s,n,l+n,m)))(num);
For the sum all odd fibonacci numbers freecodecamp challenge :D

Jul 03 2018 21:54
it was the only way i could think of
alpox
@alpox
Jul 03 2018 21:56
@thekholm80 Eh LOL
One guy there cheated terribly :D
Hahaha ok that is clever
function require(s){

};

weirdReverse=a=>[...a].map(a.pop,a)
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80

Override the require function of the tests such that the script reads only as with the length 28 xD
Haha
I wonder how long it took him to come up with that :D
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Jul 03 2018 21:57
that seems harder than just doing it right
