Question guys. My portfolio page looks fine on a laptop but my welcome section is extended much further down on mobile view. Is this a media query issue? Nothing moves when I change it.

hey guys, I'm working on a React form and I'm trying to display that data on the same page (in the green box) upon submission but I can't figure out what I'm missing for this to work (no errors in console on submission either)
form.png
import React, { Component } from 'react';

export default class Form extends Component {
    constructor (props) {
        super(props);
        this.state = {
            id: '',
            age: 1,
            dangerous: true,
            name: '',
            title: '',
            type: '',
            uid: ''
        }

        this.handleChange = this.handleChange.bind(this);
        this.handleSubmit = this.handleSubmit.bind(this);
    }

    handleChange(event) {
        const target = event.target;
        const value = target.value;
        const name = target.name;

        this.setState({
            [name]: value
        }, () => {
            console.log(this.state);
        });
    }

    handleSubmit(event) {
        event.preventDefault();
        let submitted_log =  document.getElementsByClassName('submitted-log');
        return submitted_log.innerHTML = this.state.id;
    }

    render() {
        return (
            <div className="form-container">
                <h1>Create a new log</h1>
                <form onSubmit={this.handleSubmit}>
                    <div className="question">

                        <input type="text" name="id" value={this.state.id} onChange={this.handleChange} />
                    </div>

                    <div className="question">
                        <label> Age</label>
                        <input type="number" min="1" max="150" name="age" value={this.state.age} onChange={this.handleChange} />
                    </div>

                    <div className="question">
                        <label>Dangerous</label>
                        <select name="dangerous" value={this.state.dangerous} onChange={this.handleChange} >
                            <option value="true">true</option>
                            <option value="false">false</option>

                    </div>

                    <div className="question">

                        <input type="text" name="name" value={this.state.name} onChange={this.handleChange} />
                    </div>

                    <div className="question">

                        <input type="text" name="title" value={this.state.title} onChange={this.handleChange} />
                    </div>

                    <div className="question">
                        <label>Type</label>
                        <input type="text" name="type" value={this.state.type} onChange={this.handleChange} />
                    </div>

                    <div className="question">
                        <label>UID</label>
                        <input type="text" name="uid" value={this.state.uid} onChange={this.handleChange} />
                    </div>

                    <input className="submit-button" type="submit" value="Submit" />
                </form>

                <div className="submitted-log"></div>
            </div>
        );
    }
}
I'm able to alert the submitted data though
so I know that the submission itself works, but I'm having a bit of trouble displaying it in the "submitted-log" div
on submission only of course
Aditya
@ezioda004
Oct 16 2018 00:58
@AmitP88 Why would you use document.getElementsByClassName() instead of updating the state and rendering that value from state to that div?
Anyhoo, that method returns an array like object so you'd have to do submitted_log[0]
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Oct 16 2018 01:03
@ezioda004 oh I see. I did it this way because I only wanted the state data rendered when the user clicks the submit button, but not before when the user is filling out the form
Aditya
@ezioda004
Oct 16 2018 01:05
@AmitP88 Then have .setState() in the handleSubmit() method? It'll only update that part of the state when the user clicks the submit button
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Oct 16 2018 01:06
@ezioda004 facepalm to self ahhh of course. I'm an idiot. thanks man lol
Aditya
@ezioda004
Oct 16 2018 01:08
@AmitP88 No problem, just when you think you want to use the native selector methods, remember theres definitely an alt way to do it the "react way"
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Oct 16 2018 01:10
@ezioda004 for sure. When I was writing it, I had a feeling it wasn't the right way, but I still wanted to see if it worked
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Oct 16 2018 01:40
@ezioda004 I was just looking over my code and I realized, I need to still update the state when the user is filling out the form (since the state starts out empty), hence the onChange attributes in each form element. I just want to insert the updated state into the submitted-log div only after the user clicks submit
if I try to have the .setState() method in the handleSubmit() instead of in the handleChange() method, the initial state (which is empty) will be rendered instead, since the user's changes didn't change the state
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Oct 16 2018 01:42
@AmitP88 fyi you should use defaultValue in your form inputs, not value
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Oct 16 2018 01:44
@cmccormack ah ok, thanks :) I did it that way from the Forms section in the React docs : https://reactjs.org/docs/forms.html
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Oct 16 2018 01:44
@AmitP88 you can create a state property like output that only updates when the form is submitted and use that as the value you provide in the div
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Oct 16 2018 01:45
@cmccormack I was thinking of doing that, but I wasn't sure since there are multiple values in state that need to be displayed in the div upon form submission
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Oct 16 2018 01:45
hmm I wonder if they changed that
ah defaultValue is for uncontrolled components, sorry about that
@AmitP88 well using an uncontrolled form might give you that ability without having to use any new variables
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Oct 16 2018 01:49
ahh ok, that explains it. The docs only mainly talked about controlled components
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Oct 16 2018 01:49
I question the value of just dumping the form info into a div. in an app you would probably dump that info as an object into a datastructure like an Array to display
so you could instead do that - when a user submits push the state values you want into an object, store that in an array, and map over that array in your React Component to display each item within your div.submitted-log
what's nice is you could easily pull the fields out using destructuring on your state, either destructure the properties you want, or specify the items you don't want and put the rest into a variable like ...rest
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Oct 16 2018 01:52
ahh destructuring, I need to relearn that
I tried this but ran into an error:
    handleChange(event) {
        const target = event.target;
        const value = target.value;
        const name = target.name;

        this.setState({
            [name]: value
        });
    }

    handleSubmit(event) {
        event.preventDefault();

        // insert state inside "submitted-log" div
        this.setState({
            submitted: {
                "id : " : this.state.id,
                "age : " : this.state.age,
                "dangerous : " : this.state.dangerous,
                "name : " : this.state.name,
                "title : " : this.state.title,
                "type : " : this.state.type,
                "uid : " : this.state.uid
            }
        }, () => {
            console.log(this.state.submitted);
        });

    }
        this.state = {
            id: '',
            age: 1,
            dangerous: true,
            name: '',
            title: '',
            type: '',
            uid: '',
            submitted: {}
        }

        this.handleChange = this.handleChange.bind(this);
        this.handleSubmit = this.handleSubmit.bind(this);
    }

looks like your entire state is basically your form so should be easy
const newItem = {...this.state}
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Oct 16 2018 01:54
Objects are not valid as a React child (found: object with keys {}). If you meant to render a collection of children, use an array instead.
in div (at Form.js:99)
in div (at Form.js:54)
in Form (at App.js:11)
in div (at App.js:10)
in App (at index.js:7)

here's my entire code if you're curious:

@cmccormack I tried modifying the submitted state object like so, but now i'm running into undefined errors:
    handleSubmit(event) {
        event.preventDefault();

        // insert state inside "submitted-log" div
        this.setState({
            submitted: {
                id: this.state.id,
                data: {
                    age: this.state.age,
                    dangerous: this.state.dangerous,
                    name: this.state.name
                },
                title: this.state.title,
                type: this.state.type,
                uid: this.state.uid
            }
        }, () => {
            console.log(this.state.submitted);
        });

    }

                <div className="submitted-log">
                    <div id="id">{JSON.stringify(this.state.submitted.id)}</div>
                    <div id="age">{JSON.stringify(this.state.submitted.data.age)}</div>
                    <div id="dangerous">{JSON.stringify(this.state.submitted.data.dangerous)}</div>
                    <div id="name">{JSON.stringify(this.state.submitted.data.name)}</div>

also if you are going to display the actual value of a property and not an object you no longer need to use JSON.stringify, that was just to allow you a crude way to see your object
@AmitP88 well there's your answer
on first render it doesn't have data property to access

it's written in vue but might not be a vuejs related thing. the other drop down selections remain there after selected, its only the last one that disappears for some reason

Oct 16 2018 07:49
@padunk Does it matter? All the formats that are human readable arent machine readable and converting from 1 base to another should be trivial for browsers.

lol how do i add padding on a div where only some of the children elements inside will be affected by this padding
never thought about this and now im stuck even tho it seems to be simple, and google returns results of other more common questions when i type the keywords
say i put padding on a <div class="container"> and inside it i have <div class="title-banner></div> and <p class="text">some text</p>, the padding will affect both the div.title-banner and the p.text. I want the banner to fit right to the edges and not have padding push it into the container,
Victor Popescu
@VicPopescu
Oct 16 2018 09:37
then you don't use padding
padding will push all children
you can hack it with minus margin on children, but that is a hack
leave container without padding and put padding/margin on the children that need it

Is there any way I can use freecodecamp with a password instead of without? I am trying to use it in a classroom and many of my students are too young to get email accounts so I have a workaround where I have all their specially email accounts based off of mine ( e.g. computerclass+student1@gmail) but then that means I spend a good chunk of class every single day having students come up to me and get their codes just to log in for that day every single class day and I only have one hour a week with them so it's a significant burden!
The problem is significant enough that I am looking for other sites to use entirely that do use passwords but I really love freecodecamp and don't want to have to do that!

@ezioda004 could you check PR #19535 as it seems invalid to me
kyserrecchia
@kyserrecchia
Oct 16 2018 18:42
I want my students to be able to use freecodecamp without having to get a code every single time they log in because they cannot access the email accounts they're using. I have to do it for each of them every class day and it wastes time.
Many of them are too young to get their own email accounts so I made a single gmail account and theirs are made by using my account name and then adding a "+" followed by their username, but any emails sent to them just go to my single account which they cannot have access to.
Aditya

Oct 16 2018 18:44
@Nirajn2311 Seems fine, hes implementing the idea I suggested in freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp#18925 but it was just an idea, would need the core teams consensus if it should be implemented afterall. I'd leave that PR as it is
