hiya bob
long time no see

Feb 26 00:35
Ye I've been dealing with health.. well, dental issues a lot lately. Still checking the chat almost daily, but due too some heavy painkillers I lack the concentration to participate actively
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 00:36
hope you get it all sorted out soon. that doesn't sound like fun at all
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 00:39
Nope. Pretty much all of my teeth were very bad for a long time. The result of an abusive past as a child. Unfortunetely dental costs are extremely high here in the Netherlands and they're not covered by insurrence or company insurrence. The person that did this to me commited suicide long b4 I could take it to court or something, so my only option was saving a lot of money over the years in order to cover it. That time has finally come, but there's so much that needs to be done that it's taking months and I still have months ahead of me.
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 00:41
oh geez, sorry to hear that
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 00:43
Luckily the treatments themselves aren't very painfull. I feel it from time to time, but it's managable. The time in between is terrible though. Many inflammations that are hurting like hell now they're being treated. So I'm being given a combination of paracetamol, Ibuprofen and tramadol to kill the pain. It works, but especially the tramadol has some nasty side effects. Like causing me to sleep a lot and loss of concentration
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 00:44
i took tramadol for my back a while ago. i was a couch zombie the whole time
like, every time i'd blink hours would pass
it was miserable
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 00:44
Ye exactly like that
Strangely enough morfine doesn't give me any side effects at all. But my dentist says it's "too much" to give for the kind of pain I'm having
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 00:47
that made me itchy and nauseous. i just don't take any pain killers at all anymore. well, more than tylenol or similar anyway
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 00:48
Ye I'll be happy as soon as I can quit them as well. I'm not a fan of taking painkillers either, but if you feel that kind of pain in your mouth and it stops you from eating or drinking anything.. you gladly take em
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 00:49
i can only imagine
again, i'm sorry you're having to go through all that
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 00:50
Ah no worries. I'm rly not feeling sorry for myself :D Sure it's a hell to go through, but it's something I've wanted for a long time. Finally being able to smile again on pictures and not having to hide my teeth when talking to ppl is well worth going through this!
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 00:52
a great way to look at it
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 00:53
Oh I did have side effects from morfine once though
Many years ago I had a terrible accident. Went through the back of a car window that had steel heating wires inside them. So I needed surgery
As soon as the amulance arived, they gave me shot of morfine for the pain that I wasn't feeling, lol. Once they carried me inside, another shot. Then again one in the hospital and another one while I was waiting to be taken into surgery. Then another one just before they put me under and when I woke up they had put me on a morfine infusion bag
Trust me, I've been hallucinating that night like crazy! xD
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 00:56
holy crap
they didn't even ask you if you wanted it?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 00:56
Nope
Well my mouth was riped apart so I wasn't very well able to speak :P
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 00:57
oh geez
i'm starting to think maybe you don't have the best luck
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 00:57
No I don't lol
But ye, I was able to tell them that I wasn't in any pain from the very beginning so I have no idea why they did that
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 00:58
that's crazy
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 00:59
Sure my face looked like a mess and I can understand that ppl looking at me must have thought I was in agonizing pain, but I honestly wasn't. Not even a little bit. It just felt warm, that's all
Still you'd think doctors know how much morfine you can give a person and not overdose it like that
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 01:04
my granddad got morphine after a heart attack followed by bypass surgery, he thought there were spiders crawling everywhere. it wasn't a good time for him
it was hard seeing him go through all that
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 01:04
Ye I can imagine
Luckily my hallucinations weren't scary. Just very strange. I saw my whole family standing in the room doing strange stuff. My nice was carrying my bed on her back for example
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 01:06
yikes
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Feb 26 01:11
After my wounds healed and some scars formed, they offered me cosmetic surgery to "color" them. Told that doctor he wasn't going to turn me into a second Michael Jackson and left, lol
Never regretted it. Most ppl don't even see the scars untill I tell them they're there
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 01:15
don't be hating on michael jackson lol
Bjorn van de Peut

@bjorno43 @thekholm80 been a while guys, hows it going?
@bjorno43 sorry about what you been through mate, really wish you the best going forward
did you have to replace your teeth with the fake ones? Cuz my cousin had to and i know they're extremely expensive
Kyle Holm

@darkphotonKN all good here, how's your world?
Kranti Nebhwani

Feb 26 02:34
@thekholm80 good man, started using react at work this month so been pretty exciting, with the decision being partially because of me. But now i feel extra pressure lol
you still code with react?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 02:36
i haven't written anything for a while. i recently changed jobs and i've been focused on getting up to speed there. I'd like to get back to it though
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 02:37
@thekholm80 ah yes focus on the new job first is a wise decision. react can wait :P mind if i ask what you do for a living?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 02:38
i'm building electronics. it's really strange working on hardware instead of software. requires a bit of a different skill-set
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 02:42
that's super cool man. truth be told ive been quite interested in hardware for computers but im so bad with my hands and with parts that i gave up on it as a career, so its a hobby now lol
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 02:44
it's definitely been a huge adjustment for me. tapping things out on a keyboard is worlds different than soldering things smaller than rice onto a board through a microscope.

@thekholm80 yep difference is subtle but from time to time you see it
do you enjoy it then?
what made you switch up the career path
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 02:48
I love it
i felt the end was drawing near at my last job, and a friend put in a good word where she worked. it all just kind of fell into place
Manish Giri

Feb 26 02:49
pffft
he wants to be like Iron Man and fly to europe after breakfast on weekends
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 02:50
that would be awesome. i could hang out with diomed and his cats
Manish Giri

Feb 26 02:51

everyone will know Manish's name

i looks like an l to me unless im close up to the screen
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Feb 26 02:54
nah its cool i've had lots of people tell me that
gotten used to it by now
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 03:03
@thekholm80 glad everything fell into place man, seems like the right job for you
being out of the comfort zone is when you really learn and develop as a person ive found
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 03:04
thanks man. i love learning new things and I think it will be a long time before I run out of things to learn at this place
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 03:16
haha for sure, for me too right now with a bunch of noobs trying to use react to develop a new project. when you get the time check out nextjs with a small tutorial on youtube or something. Pretty exciting way of making react stuff that's server-side-rendered, meaning it's already loaded the output of react pages before it hits the client so google can crawl your app, with js off your react site isn't just a white screen, etc etc. It makes routing and some other things much smoother too. No new code it's still reactjs it's just a project structure and some cool tools
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 03:18
sounds interesting
probably creates amazing load times, too?
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 03:18
yepyep :D
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 03:18
very cool
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 03:20
and strongly recommend this: https://www.udemy.com/universal-react-with-nextjs-the-ultimate-guide/ cuz it saved my time with the learning (had to learn while i was working, after work), just follow along and see all the cool stuff that it offers. teaches how to directly configure the nodejs server that server-side renders your reactjs stuff too that's semi-friendly to those without nodejs knowledge. its 10$ but was worth it for me cuz it's cheaper than a cinema ticket and taught me loads + saved me time haha
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 03:22
very cool
my interests are definitely more server-side than front end; i'm completely rubbish at UI design and CSS makes me cry
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 03:23
haha well do you know nodejs?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 03:24
i'm pretty familiar
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 03:25
great, i think you will love nextjs lol, especially the second and third projects there it goes deep into the nodejs server-side stuff
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 03:25
does it play well with graphql? i'm fully in love with graphql
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 03:26
haha ive heard it does, apollo or something?
im not too familiar but someone at work really loves it too
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 03:26
yeah, apollo uses graphql
for me it's so much easier than the traditional REST api convention
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 03:27
yeah it works well with apollo+nextjs
i need to learn it xD
is it difficult to make the transition?
Kyle Holm
@thekholm80
Feb 26 03:28
there was a bit of a learning curve, but once it clicks it's amazing. it was easier for me to learn than redux
Kranti Nebhwani
@darkphotonKN
Feb 26 03:42
sounds great, will get crackin on it tomorrow lol

const user = {
  name: "kino",
  sayHi() {
    return "hi";
  }
}

console.log(user.sayHi());

const user2 = {
  name: "potato",
  sayHi: () => {
    return "hi 2";
  }
}

console.log(user2.sayHi());
Hello there! are there any difference between the 2 sayHi functions that I should be aware of??? they both seem to work similarly
Aditya
@ezioda004
Feb 26 15:20
@kinopotato The major difference would be that in latter one the this context would be default binding ie window object and in former one this would the be the object itself.
const user = {
  name: "kino",
  sayHi() {
    console.log(this); // user obj
    return "hi";
  }
};

const user2 = {
  name: "potato",
  sayHi: () => {
    console.log(this); // default binding
    return "hi 2";
  }
};

Hi, nice and smart people! I just finished the Responsive Web Projects and I'm so happy, because while I can create the CSS and HTML needed, I suck at coming up with a design that looks even halfway decent... :)
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Feb 26 21:27
@d-fect just keep playing with it and looking at other sites for inspiration
Frank
@d-fect
Feb 26 22:18
@cmccormack Yeah, I might revisit the Responsive projects at a later time, but I need to learn JavaScript for work, so that will be my focus next. But my Tribute page will for sure have to be redone. It's looks like it's from the mid 90s :)
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Feb 26 22:19
@d-fect I wouldn't redo anything until you're done, you'll learn way too much on each project and probably not care about the old ones
@d-fect it's good to keep trying new stuff on each project, even if it isn't really part of the project. Like maybe you've never used CSS grid but you want to, use it in your next project even if it's not a requirement just to get used to it
Frank
@d-fect
Feb 26 22:24
@cmccormack True. But I got more secure of myself in later projects, so the Portfolio looks "OK-ish" at least. And it uses some grids and stuff. But yeah, probably smarter to try something extra on the coming projects.
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
