@Whip The path to follow is your own path, if you know what you want todo then you can just go out and try to achieve it. Unlike becoming good at most things, the only things you need to learn programming and development is time, an internet connection and grit haha
Now if you don't know what you want todo, then you have even more freedom, try everything and anything haha

JS is a pretty good language to learn. It isn't as clear cut as Python, but it has unrivaled documentation and a huge community (since its the language of the web)

Pythons a great starter language since it has very straight forward syntax, and is pretty flexible. Its called the "swiss army knife" of languages.

I know a guy, a friend of mine, and I hosted with him for a few years but I switched to Digital Ocean because it's only five bucks a month.

What kind of hosting are you looking for? I hosted a website for almost free with https://sdf.org for a while (actually, it's still up). You send them one dollar in the mail once and you get free hosting.

Digital Ocean used to be called Droplets and would let you host small scale VPN servers for about 5-15 bucks a month. It looks like you can still do this, However, droplets are completely blank servers and require you to command line install web-application like: apache or nginx. It will also allow you to install mySQL, CPannel, PHPmyAdmin, etc...

When I had one it was extremely frustrating trying to learn and setup but I have no doubt it has completely changed the way I understand back-end. It would probably be better to use something like GoDaddy's Domain + Webserver packages for cheap hosting options. I found that free or near free hosting services are useually really unreliable or sketchy.
