Okay, so I'm posting a problem I'm having with my JS calculator here. I can't get 0 to show up on the screen and I can't punch in numbers and percentages, either. Is there something wrong with my code? Can anyone please help me here please? http://codepen.io/lisaramos/pen/BjrVGV Thanks

first thing i notice
you need to update display when the button is clicked, the way your code is working it just sets display to "" once on page load and thats it
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 01:19

@calicode Is it like this?

  $('input').val(display(""));

Now how do I display negative integers when I punch in numbers?

Andrew Schmidthuber
@calicode
Feb 02 2016 01:22
not sure what that line would do. my code looks like this for button clicks

$(".numBut").click(function() {

input += $(this).text();
$("#inputSec").text(input);

});

  $(".numBut").click(function() {

    input += $(this).text();
    $("#inputSec").text(input);
  });
my display is currently split between input/output, #inputSec is the top bar
i haven't gotten to negatives yet
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 01:32
@calicode Is that a way to get the numbers to show up on the screen when I punch the keys? How about 0 showing up on the screen?
Andrew Schmidthuber
@calicode
Feb 02 2016 01:33
my example above updates when you hit the buttons
its just adding the button press text onto input, and then writing input to my screen display
which for input is #inputSec.
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 01:35
@calicode Now why is nothing going on in my calculator after I did what you suggested? http://codepen.io/lisaramos/pen/BjrVGV
Andrew Schmidthuber
@calicode
Feb 02 2016 01:37
you dont have input defined anywhere
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 01:38
@calicode How do I define input?
Andrew Schmidthuber
@calicode
Feb 02 2016 01:39
var input = ""; somewhere outside of the click function, right under value maybe.
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 01:41
@calicode This is what I did with the code.
var calculatingResult = [];
var operationKeys = ["/", "*", "-", "+"];

$(document).ready(function() {
  // Access the screen object
  var screen = $('.screen');
  var resetScreen = "0";
  var value = "";
  var input = "";
  upgradeScreen(resetScreen);
  document.getElementById("screen").innerHTML = value;
  $('.numBut').click(function() {
    input += $(this).text();
    $('#inputSec').text(input);
  });

  $('#wrapper').click(function() {
    $('html').addClass('.clear');
  });

});

<input type="text" id="inputSec" name="display" disabled/> might cause an issue also. let me see if the same basic logic will work

i'm just using regular divs for my screen
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 01:43
@calicode Would that work? I've tried it but it didn't so I used input instead.
Andrew Schmidthuber
@calicode
Feb 02 2016 01:44
ok
i couldn't change the text in that input field
yep a normal div works
<div id="inputSec" name="display" > </div>
change your css to work on #inputSec instead of just input and it should be pretty seamless
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 01:48
@calicode That's what I did but what about the JS code that I mentioned above. Is there anything I need to fix in order for my calculator to work?
Andrew Schmidthuber
@calicode
Feb 02 2016 01:50
i'm looking, that should be updating when you click a button
oh
can you go into the pen settings and verify that you have jquery enabled under javascript? when i look at your settings i dont see it added
those $ statements are jquery
i can see pen settings on another example site so i dont think its loaded, just go to pen settings (gear at the top) click javascript and then at the bottom under quick add choose jquery.
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 01:56
@calicode I added jQuery and nothing is going on? Is there something wrong? :worried:
Andrew Schmidthuber
@calicode
Feb 02 2016 01:59
sec i think i might see the problem
<script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-2.2.0.min.js"></script>
take that out of your html
just let codepen handle it
when i dug down into the developer console i found this
Mixed Content: The page at 'https://s.codepen.io/boomerang/60cf01a4426bae008f733f5b3edc30831454378220920/index.html?editors=1010' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure script 'http://code.jquery.com/jquery-2.2.0.min.js'. This request has been blocked; the content must be served over HTTPS.
so its trying to load that jquery from your html, but it has to be https://code.jquery.com etc
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 02:03
@calicode I did the https://code.jquery.com but when I punch numbers on the screen of my calculator, nothing shows up. How come? Have I done something wrong?
http://codepen.io/lisaramos/pen/BjrVGV
Andrew Schmidthuber
@calicode
Feb 02 2016 02:04
try commenting this out, its throwing an error because the function isn't defined but i dont know if that would be enough to stop execution
upgradeScreen(resetScreen);
so just put // in front of it
same with this document.getElementById("screen").innerHTML = value;
$('.numBut').click(function() {
err
not that click function
just the document.getElementbyId
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 02:08
@calicode So I put // in front of what you mentioned? All I have is $(document).ready(function() {}); as to why the function is defined? Now how do I define the function?
Andrew Schmidthuber
@calicode
Feb 02 2016 02:09
just document.getElementById("screen").innerHTML = value;
which is right under that first line
this is the basic section on functions
any of the bonfires you did were functions
oh cool your buttons work now :)
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 02:12

  var input = "";
  // upgradeScreen(resetScreen);

@LisaRamos so right now, you're just trying to figure out why the numbers aren't showing up, right?

@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 03:45
@qualitymanifest Yup. That's what I'm trying to do.
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Feb 02 2016 03:46
@LisaRamos you'll want to remove the function that's wrapping everything there
basically just remove the first and last lines of what you have pasted above
also this isn't what was causing your problem but $('html').addClass('.clear'); <-- when you're using addClass, you don't use a period before the class name
so just $('html').addClass('clear');
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 03:49
@qualitymanifest I've got that but do I need to put what you mentioned in a function?
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Feb 02 2016 03:50
@LisaRamos oh yeah, i don't know why i didn't think of this before - just call the function
enterNumbers(); after the end of the function
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 03:51
@qualitymanifest Is it outside of the function?
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Feb 02 2016 03:51
is what outside of the function? the function call?
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 03:51
@qualitymanifest The function call
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Feb 02 2016 03:52
yes... you will want to call your function after you've created it. just try it
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 02 2016 03:55
@qualitymanifest That's what I'm doing but right now, I need to get off of here for now because I need to go to sleep. I might as well continue this tomorrow instead if possible.

Hello, I have 2 problems:
  1. I can only string 2 numbers together. To fix this, I have a feeling this involves fixing my $("#operators") functions (but I'm not confident in my abilities).
  2. Decimal usage...it's just not showing up. (I did the codecademy version of this not too long before getting this assignment). If I divide to get a decimal, the decimal doesn't proceed the number.

@RakshithNM bedore starting on codepen it is good to check weather cdn is installed or not like you can do <h1 class="text-primary">hello</h1> if its give you blue color bootstrap cdn is installed properly

then again for jquery

$(document).ready(function(){
$("h1").fadeOut();
});

if this works then jquery cdn is also properly installed in your case its not working

Hi.
I have a nav panel with 3 nav pills.
the clicked pill gets activated, but the href does not work.

If I load bootstrap before jquery in JS (codepen) href works, but then the activation stops working.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

    <nav class="navbar navbar-inverse navbar-fixed-top">
      <div id="nav ">
        <ul class="nav nav-pills pull-right">

          <li role="presentation"><a href="#contact" data-toggle="tab">Contact</a></li>

your href works, but since you dont have content the actual paragraph is hidden under the navbar
Portfolio page content goes here.
its there, just not visible because of the navbar
so if you add a margin-top or padding-top of example 60px, it will show up
oh

Off-topic but...Hey I need some help. I'm working on a site for a client and I'm trying to get a lightbox to pop up from a link. It works fine on a test page here: http://lovemyting3.wpengine.com/sample-page/ but for the home page it won't work, although I'm using the same exact code here: http://lovemyting3.wpengine.com/

I think the problem might be in my mouseout/mouseover functions here:

<a class="footrigger" href="#foohiddengallery22"><img class="img-responsive" src="http://lovemyting2.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Thumb-11.png" align="left" border="0" onmouseover="this.src='http://lovemyting2.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Title-BtS.png'"
onmouseout="this.src='http://lovemyting2.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Thumb-11.png'" alt="Behind The Scenes" ></a>
<div id="foohiddengallery22" style="display: none;">

<img class="ngg_displayed_gallery mceItem" src="http://lovemyting2.wpengine.com/nextgen-attach_to_post/preview/id--630" alt="" data-mce-placeholder="1" />

So I have a pretty general question. I feel like I have a decent understanding of JavaScript on it's own, and HTML without JavaScript, but I don't really know how to use the two together. For instance, I think I can build the random quote generator as a JavaScript function, but I don't know how to call it using an HTML button. Are there any tutorials on this? I don't need an exact answer, but if you could point me in the direction of some resources or reading material, I think I just need to learn more about how JavaScript interacts with HTML.

@ug02fast That's what I've been trying to accomplish. Now, how do I clear off the numbers once I've entered them into the screen and also, how do I get the % symbol not to show on the screen, either but calculate percentages instead?

Since your using Jquery you really don't need the onclick in the button. Can get rid of the function all together. So when the button with the class .clear gets clicked this function executes.
$('.clear').click(function() {
    $('#inputSec').text("0");
    input = "";
  });

Bruce Young

Feb 02 2016 20:25
it’s not counting time really.. just doing something every 1000 ms
you have to add in something like theTime—; and store the time you are counting down in that when you start
theTime = theTime -1
Clark Arnold

@ishanshukla97 maybe instead of using HR’s to break sections up, try making the div background colors different for each major section. Also try not to put styling code in your HTML. That should go in the CSS and you then add a class to the thing you are trying to style.

@mutantspore I was thinking to create another object to actively monitor the other objects and maybe that way i can make it trigger things. (By now you realised that i am mostly looking for encouragement haha)

I'm trying to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and total numbers here and I don't know what I'm doing as far as this code goes. Can anyone help me please?

var operators = ["/", "*", "-", "+"];
var decimalAdded = false;

for (var i = 0; i < operators.length; i++) {
  operators[i].onclick = function() {
    var inputValue = input.innerHTML;
    var btnValue = this.innerHTML;
  }
}

@LisaRamos what do you want to achieve? Are u gonna do calculations as a traditional calculator one by one?

@LisaRamos your operators array should be an array of DOM elements rather than just strings containing the operator

@KokoChris I'm trying to do calculations as a traditional calculator @jondcoleman This is what I've been trying to do so far.
var operators = ["/", "*", "-", "+"];
var decimalAdded = false;

for (var i = 0; i < operators.length; i++) {
  operators[i].onclick = function() {
    var inputValue = input.innerHTML;
    var btnValue = document.getElementsByClassName("op");
  }
}

@LisaRamos so you're trying to add event handlers to those buttons right?
specifically the onclick event handler
in your for loop what is the value of operators[i] when i = 0?

ok hang on
what I was trying to illustrate was that what your code is trying to do is this:
"/".onclick = ...
noncasus
@noncasus
Feb 02 2016 21:55
@LisaRamos what @jondcoleman said. In order to use the onclick event you need to use it on an element not a string.
Jonathan Coleman

Feb 02 2016 21:57
@LisaRamos how would you select the / button DOM element?
CompGeekGirl

Feb 02 2016 21:58

@noncasus This is what I did.

var operators = ["/", "*", "-", "+"];
var decimalAdded = false;

for (var i = 0; i < operators.length; i++) {
  "/".onclick = function() {
    var inputValue = input.innerHTML;
    var btnValue = document.getElementsByClassName("op");
  }

@jondcoleman I'm unsure of what you're talking about. I'm confused :worried:

the code that you have right now is saying that it should fire when someone clicks on a string "/"
but in reality it should be an element from the DOM
in jquery it should be something like
 $(".division").onClick();
because everything inside the $( ) will be an element

Looking for some quick pointers on what I'm doing wrong on the css of this. Trying to get everything centered but struggling. Gotten to the point of guessing and checking but it seems like the long way to go. I'll keep looking but let me know if anyone can point me in the right direction. @Mogedi the hover effect is a reasonable idea but I’d made them all slightly off white and then when you hover make the selected one full white. or something like that. making it darker is harder to read. Alo I’m wondering what real use the extra info is . You seem to have covered the current user requirements ok though. (they keep changing!)
@Mogedi also.. there isn’t really a hover effect on a mobile touch device
