@idietmoran I know how to make it, but it will be a lot of code and i'm trying to make an efficient and shorter code

hi! i am working on stylizing the camper news feed and my $.getJSON to "http://www.freecodecamp.com/news/hot" keeps failing and I don't have any idea why. it worked yesterday... :(

@eferdman let’s have a look then
Elizabeth Ferdman
@eferdman
Feb 04 2016 00:19
i was actually using the fetch api and it was failing, then i just switched it to $.getJSON and still failing. here's the code
    $.getJSON(camperNewsAPI, function(data) {
        var posts = data.slice(0,6);
        posts.forEach(function(post) {
            self.posts.push( new Post(post) );
        });
    }).fail(function(err) {
        console.log(err);
    });

Feb 04 2016 00:23
@eferdman what do you have your variable camperNewsAPI set to?
Elizabeth Ferdman
@eferdman
Feb 04 2016 00:28
var camperNewsAPI = "http://www.freecodecamp.com/news/hot";
Bruce Young

he said Chrome
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 00:45
@eferdman check the console and see if you are getting any errors or the json isn't being acquired. I know on the new firefox you need to approve any non- https aquires.
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 04 2016 00:46
@idietmoran he restarted his computer and now all is ok

@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 00:46
@mutantspore ah didnt see that im late to the party
Elizabeth Ferdman
@eferdman
Feb 04 2016 00:47
@idietmoran yea..the error was not helpful just said "fetch failed" or something like that
'https://s.codepen.io/eferdman/fullpage/ZQMyGj?' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure XMLHttpRequest endpoint 'http://www.freecodecamp.com/news/hot'. This request has been blocked; the content must be served over HTTPS.
ok better error message yay
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 04 2016 00:52
ok that’s legit.. just access codepen using http://
Elizabeth Ferdman
@eferdman
Feb 04 2016 00:53
that doesn't seem to work
it’s a security thing. you can’t access unsecure stuff (http) via a secure url (https)
Elizabeth Ferdman
@eferdman
Feb 04 2016 00:55
mine won't! ahhh...
omg lol, i have a plugin that's refusing it. omg. i need coffee. goodbye.
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 04 2016 00:57
i have simply put your pen up using http and then https. the http version works
hahah lol
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 00:57
@mutantspore yep that was the error i was getting on firefox too, you can temp allow those connection through but yea
Elizabeth Ferdman
@eferdman
Feb 04 2016 00:58
i wonder if i can't change the settings on the jsonrequest to allow it somehow
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 00:58
@eferdman maybe use https://campernews or w/e
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 04 2016 00:58
i doubt it. It’s usually the actual web server config
I don’t think that works. this has been discussed before (as have most questions lol)
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 00:59
yea thats because there is no https for the json
actually there is no https for all of freecodecamp
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 04 2016 01:00
yes . it’s a server thing. a different port actually
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 01:00
right, but if they enabled it on their end it would work
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 04 2016 01:01
yes
http is usually port 80 and https is 443
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 01:02
yea im surprised it actually no enabled on fcc :X
isn't there a big push for https?
as a standard?
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 01:04
there was a issue about it on github, its now been closed and some stated that https was in the works
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 04 2016 01:04
yes, to improve security. there is an overhead though, stuff has to be encrypted and that takes time.

Feb 04 2016 01:11
@jnmorse is react similar to angular?
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:11
@jnmorse coolness. twitch makes sense to re-do with it, givin the component nesting and such
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:11
@MindfulBell i’m almost done with the recipe. I’m trying to get the localStorage and new recipes to work at the moment
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:11
@harveysanders so do you set up minimal HTML and CSS and then use React to fill in the rest?
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:12
@jnmorse yeah i want to redo some old projects with it
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 01:12
@idietmoran I don't really know angular that much, but yes and no, react you pretty much do everything in javascript using jsx
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:12
i like it better than angular so far
but i dont really know angular
and angular 2 seems to be completely different that angular 1 or whatever was the stable release before 2

@harveysanders i used angular for most of front-end projects, you can pull information from a json file easily and auto populate / repeat templates
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:14
i sorta feel like my moderate understanding of JS is going to hinder me learning React...
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 01:14
main thing i'm not sure about with react is implimentation of things like flux, build tools etc. I've been trying to use webpack, but guess i'm still debating on using something like Radium and inline css rather then creating sass files like I use to
idietmoran

@idietmoran there is, and React is growing too. I talked to a dev who did a code bootcamp in SF and got a job few months after. He has been doing programming now for 2 years. He says it is EXCELLENT that FCC switched to React and that I should definitely learn it.
So that's encouraging. There are not many React devs compared to Angular I believe.
So they will be in demand
I think FCC understands that.

@idietmoran yea nice. clean code! Is it supposed to pull the entire list of people for ALL?
@harveysanders question...
var PhotoGallery = React.createClass({

  render: function() {

    var photos = this.props.photos.map(function(photo) {
      return <Photo src={photo.url} caption={photo.caption} />
    });

    return (
      <div className='photo-gallery'>
        {photos}
      </div>
    );
  }
});
What is 'this' referring to above in var photos =
PhotoGallery?
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 01:19

@MindfulBell for somereason angular has a hard time figuring out if a field is null. there is a functoin to figure it out built int angular but i didnt figure that out until recently so I might go back.

all is supposed to add online + offline into a list sorted by online.

i should've also sorted by usercount looking back at it too
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:20
http://codepen.io/harveysanders/pen/vNrapE?editors=0010 here’s mine. i just use jQuery and little underscore if i remember
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 01:20
@MindfulBell yes this refers to PhotoGallery in that example
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:20
@jnmorse that kinda confuses me...i guess i need to write some react to get it...
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:20
the PhotoGallery React element
i know
i dont really like this
and i don’t really use it other than while using React
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:21
well since we are sharing our Twitch APIs...
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 01:21
I've been starting to use the es6 syntax
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 01:21
i dont understand how you were able to get profile pictures if the api reads null
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:22
apperently you don’t need to use this with React, but that’s how much docs are and i haven’t had a change to rewrite any code
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:22
@jnmorse yea the course I am doing puts ES6 syntax in there, while learning React...it makes it a lot, I mean I am in essence learning: React.js, JSX, ES6
And eventually I will learn Redux
oy vey
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:23
@idietmoran which API were you referring to?

@MindfulBell i like your styling. I need to work on my design skills
@MindfulBell not sure
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 01:27
@MindfulBell at some point yes, but I got curious and starting researching a bit on my own, plus not sure to what extent
@MindfulBell also I wanted to know what tools I would want to work with it localy
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:28
yeah FCC tuts are not that great, but i love the projects
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:28
@harveysanders yes. FCC wins for: bonfires, ziplines, community
but i am now piecing together my own plan

Feb 04 2016 01:30
@MindfulBell yeah not so much
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 01:33
I kinda really like React, think it makes it a bit more intuitive to working with elements in the dom, though i'm still not sure how to do any like fancy animations or anything
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:35
yea, what's kind of sad is (and doesn't make a ton of sense)...FCC teaches jQuery, and I enjoy jQuery, and then they teach you React which is great for DOM manipulation so you will use way less jQuery
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:36
@MindfulBell yeah, it’s probably because FCC is growing so fast
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:36
What I find so cool about React is reconciliation. How once you re-render the DOM, React looks at the new vs. the old and knows how to implement the updates
@harveysanders Yea, there will never be a 'finished' FCC curriculum because this field is constantly changing.
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:37
yeah, it’s nuts
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:37
i gave node a try for a bit
and decided i am saving that for the very end
front end is my jam
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:38
@MindfulBell i used it a bit for the backend
i really like it
im not great at it, but i enjoy it
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:38
@harveysanders i do not, maybe i don't understand it yet (again, awful tutorials)
but i feel the visual feedback you get from front end is far more satisfying
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:38
@MindfulBell much more than frontend
i hear you on that
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:38
@harveysanders i also have a bit of a creative/artistic side
@harveysanders so front-end for days please
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:39
@MindfulBell i feel so lame trying to show off my backend work
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:39
and that is where you get to use the most pure JavaScript imo
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:39
because you can’t ‘see’ much going on
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 01:39
I originaly mainly focus on php, its a bit simpler for backend, but I don't know, seems like people like to bash on it for some reason.
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:39
so it doesn’t look like a big deal to non-coders
and they’re just like ‘cool.'
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:40
@harveysanders Haha yea, I tried to show my GF how crypto works doing a small node project, and she was lik "huh"
"neat"
but all programming seems lame to her
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:40
@jnmorse i’ve never knew php so i don’t know the difference
haha
@MindfulBell mine too
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:41
@harveysanders are you a student?
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:43
@MindfulBell i teach very basic intro front-end stuff (and a bunch of other things, like life skills and customer service) to 16-24yrs old at a job training program here in New Orleans
we partnered with another org called Operation Spark
and i was student with them for a bit
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:44
@harveysanders wow sounds appropriate with where you are headed, really cool!
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:45
Operation Spark introduces a bunch of people to development and runs a bunch of bootcamps with HackReactor
so i was in the mix a little about a year ago, and then FCC came around
and now i have a way to keep learning in my spare time
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:46
Nice!
Harvey S
@harveysanders
Feb 04 2016 01:47
@MindfulBell yeah, the community is great on here, too. Are you a student?
Tim Bell
@MindfulBell
Feb 04 2016 01:49
Nay. I am 30. I have a shitty full time job that takes 55 hours out of my week. I struggle to find time to commit to learning, but in 6 months i've gotten this far
@harveysanders bbl
Harvey S
@harveysanders

Feb 04 2016 01:59
Got my API grabbing data, but it's doing it too quickly. The API returns the JSON before the geolocation has a chance to run and get my lat/long.
// LocalWeather Javascript
//var apiKey = 810a0a8ee3d2a52f12f66932cfe8cf0c;

$(document).ready(function(){

    navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
    var lat = position.coords.latitude;
    var lon = position.coords.longitude;
    console.log(lat);
    console.log(lon);
    });

$.getJSON("http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?lat=47.5951315&lon=-122.16247279999999&APPID=810a0a8ee3d2a52f12f66932cfe8cf0c", function(json) {
        console.log(json);
});
});
Derp, disregard. Just moved the getJSON call inside the navigator function and it worked as expected
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 02:01
@matty22 i think it's because lat and lon aren't in the global scope
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 04 2016 02:01
@matty22 you can wrap the getJson in a function and call that from within the geoLoc also
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 02:01
@matty22 as to why its not working in the first example
Matt Leonard
@matty22
Feb 04 2016 02:02
I did this:
$(document).ready(function(){

    navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
    var lat = position.coords.latitude;
    var lon = position.coords.longitude;
    console.log(lat);
    console.log(lon);

        $.getJSON("http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?" + lat + "&" + lon + "&APPID=810a0a8ee3d2a52f12f66932cfe8cf0c", function(json) {
            console.log(json);
        });
    });

});
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 04 2016 02:02
the code above has the lat and lon hard coded anyway
Matt Leonard
@matty22
Feb 04 2016 02:02
This returns me a 404: cant find city error
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 04 2016 02:03
@mutantspore if he defined lat and lon before the navigator function then it would work fine

if the api is not inside the geoloc or called from within the geoloc it will be out of sync. both are async processes
the JS wil just keep running and you don’t know when the api wil return

@DurableMicron I’ve also changed a bit of teh HTML (moved a div) and a bit of CSS to position teh quote button under the quote box
ok well you have it set to a set height
if you remove that height in your quoteframe it will auto size
i just did it in the fork
anyway. it works, you just need to make it look good :)

@Utkarshbhimte well you’ll find a lot of campers just develop locally in something like Atom (http://atom.io) and then put it in codepen when they have finished. Well that’s how I work anyway lol.

? I’m not eally sure I understand. You either just read the index.html file you create in your local browser or get a bit more sophisticated and run a local web server so you can more easily test it on various devices you may have.

Hey everyone, I'm stuck on the Simon game zipline; I'm just trying to get my button to be pressed in the solution order, not worrying about checking user input yet. I can't seem to get it to work properly though.
http://codepen.io/jong649/pen/qbxjZp
I don't actually know if I need to use clearTimeout() here, but my function doesn't seem to work if there is more than one button to be pressed
function compTurn(){
for(var i = 0;i<=count;i++){
   $('#'+solution[i]).css("opacity","0.5");
  $('#'+solution[i]+'Snd').get(0).play();
  setTimeout(function(){ $('#'+solution[i]).css("opacity","1"); }, 1000);
  clearTimeout();
  }
}
And now it doesn't return any buttons to opacity 1
i am unable to change the font size of the divs with id #my-name and #welcome-msg.
can anyone review the code and help me

  <div class="head hide">
    This is the popover title.
   </div>
  <div class="content hide">
    <p>This is the popover content.</p>
  </div>

<script>
$('.popover-markup > .trigger').popover({
    html : true,
    title: function() {
      return $(this).parent().find('.head').html();
    },
    content: function() {
      return $(this).parent().find('.content').html();

@codybousc

@Blauelf by convert to cents, did you mean just multiply the value by 100? Even that's giving me a strange result

Yes, exactly that, multiply by 100 and then round (there should not be something smaller than cents, so those are quantisation errors).
Of course you have to make sure you treat all numbers in that way, and that you output dollars again.
This is some sort of decimal fixed-point, this type of maths is done in financial calculations, where finite binary representation of digits after the point would severely hurt.

I've been struggling with the Quote generator. Can someone help me understand how I can save the current quote on the page for use with the twitter button? I am having trouble understanding where to store that information so that it can change when the newquote function is pressed and be stored somewhere else for use in tweeting it. http://codepen.io/MattBoland/full/qbKajY/

@sravanivegesna from your experience i can tell that you might be having basic knowledge of html CSS and JS, you just need practice. Here on FCC there are Front end based projects, which require your knowledge about html ,css and JS. Just try to complete those projects. And you will surely improve your skills.

Hello everyone :)
I have a rather complicated question imo
Using JQuery, I want to use the targeted element as a selector inside the closure used, but the selector used to target it isn't unique, is it possible ? If yes, how ?
Here's what i want to do :
$(".classUsedForMultipleElements").click(function() {
    alert($("ElementThatCausedTheEvent").text());
}

Basically, you need to change the text variable in the url

@sean9 I see you just copied my sample souce, your need to connect one of the options that I had included in that to your code, I just created it as examples and didn't state outright how to do that part.
though thinking I should just delete the first option as its not as easy to tie into another persons code

I can't figure out why my navbar dropdown menu won't work: <li><a href="http://codepen.io/BrettPen/full/eJLoXz/">Article Template</a></li>
Maddah Anass

Feb 04 2016 23:37
@sean9 Basically, you need to add id="custom-tweet" to your anchor
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 23:43
@BLayman if the menu your talking about is the address in the href then there are a few things wrong, like you need to include the bootstrap, you also including an old version of jquery, you can just select jquery from the drop down btw, also you haven't defined any of the necessary markup to use the bootstrap collapse. try to review the bootstrap docs https://getbootstrap.com/components/#navbar

@jnmorse @UnlimiWorks and how do i grab my quote1
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 23:47
@sean9 http://codepen.io/jnmorse/pen/eJjYrO I Simplified my example a bit, where you generating your tweet your want to use code like the javascript here to update the links href.
or getting your quote rather..
please don't just copy and past it either, look at it, see how it works then try to implement it yourself
Brett
@BLayman
Feb 04 2016 23:52
@jnmorse Oh, sorry I must have pasted the wrong text. I meant to paste this link: http://codepen.io/BrettPen/pen/KVBJWW. I'm having trouble with the "Web Design" dropdown.
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 04 2016 23:54
@BLayman ok, well you still have the same issue there with jQuery and not including the bootstrap js, under the javascript cog, remove the older jQuery you have there, then select jQuery from the dropdown followed by Bootstrap
then your drop down functions
