Anyone want to take a crack at this issue? My calculator can take a float and perform an equation with it - but if the SECOND number in the equation has a decimal, it drops the amount after the decimal. Ex: (2.5 * 2)= 5. But (2 + 1.5) = 3. http://codepen.io/SBPAAP/pen/BjOeNg/

Okay so I'm able to enter numbers on the screen of my calculator. The only issues I'm having are converting modulos to decimals, entering decimals, calculating decimals, integers, and calculating numbers to equals. Everytime I punch in a number and an operator, for instance, 9/9, it goes to 99 instead. Is there anything I'm doing wrong with my code or something. Can anyone help me figure this out?http://codepen.io/lisaramos/pen/MKBmgm

Hi guys.
http://codepen.io/UnlimiWorks/full/mVGMoQ
This is my calculator. I have a a problem though, if i click on any button, there's an outline while i'm clicking. What pseudo-selector should i use to disable it ?
Maddah Anass
@unlimiworks
Feb 05 2016 02:12
@idietmoran the problem is with the button, not the input. I've done the outline: none, but my problem is when i click. Initially, it stayed like that even when i the click was done, but i fixed that by doing .btn:focus { outline: none; }
@idietmoran But thanks for the link! I didn't know there were compatibility issues in some browser

Can anyone help me with this please? I want to finish this real bad.

Feb 05 2016 03:11
@LisaRamos Do the calculations work? If so, you need to clear the input box after a number has been pressed after an operator
@jnmorse So i’m making an app that requires authentication. I have all the authentication down, but i’m tyring to figure out how I should split up the components. I originally had diff components for Register, Login, and LogOut, but found passing state and props difficult and annoying. I’ve since moved all components into a single one called header. Is this the “React Way” or should I be splitting them up and passing props?

@jnmorse The reason I put them in the same component is because they all really relate to common states, but the code is getting upwards of 150 lines and it’s my largest component so far. Just not sure if this is how I should be doing it
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 05 2016 03:23
@bighitbiker3 basicly from what I understand everything is a component, you sorta break the page down by sections
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 05 2016 03:25
@bighitbiker3 Are you talking about this code I have here?
var block = "";
$(".op").click(function() {
  var input = $("#inputSec").text();
  input += $(this).text();
  $("#inputSec").text(input);

  function total() {
    console.log('the result of your equation is: ' + math.eval(input));
    $('#inputSec').text(math.eval(input));
  }
});
Elliott McNary
@bighitbiker3
Feb 05 2016 03:27
@jnmorse Yea, but how deep do you go? Would having all the authentication stuff in one component be “correct”? Or would you split it up by register, log in, log out?
@LisaRamos I don’t totally understand your problem. Does the total() function work and it’s just an issue of what’s displaying in the #inputSec? Also, I would console.log($(this).text()) and just make sure this is referring to the object you want it to
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 05 2016 03:33
@bighitbiker3 The total() doesn't seem to work properly. Maybe it could be an issue that is displaying in the #inputSec or not. What do you think?
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 05 2016 03:33
@bighitbiker3 Sorry going back and forth trying to help my dad with something as well. And I think you'd seperate anything that displayed different status perhaps, like you only see these components if they are logged it. I'm still learning a bunch of it myself so maybe one of the things that incorporating flux would help with or figuring out a way to only pass certain info to those components that need it, without nessarly passing via props

Feb 05 2016 03:39
@LisaRamos take a look at your operator click function compared to your number click function
you need to declare the input variable in the on the .numBut click as well
Adding var input = $("#inputSec").text(); to your $(‘.numbut’) click function fixes it, but brings up another issue with 0. I’ll let you try and tackle that one :)
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 05 2016 03:43

@bighitbiker3

$(".op").click(function() {
  var input = $("#inputSec").text();
  input += $(this).text();
  $("#inputSec").text(input);

So I should just take that var input = $('#inputSec').text() and put it in the $('.numBut') click function instead?

Elliott McNary
@bighitbiker3
Feb 05 2016 03:44
@LisaRamos well, you’ll need it in both if you want the function to know what the existing var input value is
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 05 2016 03:45

@bighitbiker3 Now with this function.

$('.numBut').click(function() {
  input += $(this).text();
  $('#inputSec').text(input);
  var input = $("#inputSec").text();
});

I clicked on a number on my calculator and got undefined. Is there anything wrong with this?

Elliott McNary
@bighitbiker3
Feb 05 2016 03:48
@LisaRamos yep
@LisaRamos when you click a number you want it to know what the input value in #inputSec is and then add to it
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos
Feb 05 2016 03:52

Feb 05 2016 03:53
$('.numBut').click(function() {
  var input = $("#inputSec").text();
  input += $(this).text();
  $('#inputSec').text(input);
});
@LisaRamos that should work. I would watch this youTube video = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aGhZQkoFbQ
It goes over the event loop and is kind of unrelated, but it shows you how functions execute in JS which is VERY important especially once you get into Asynchronous work
It really helped me get a more fundamental understanding of how JS reads code

@bighitbiker3 Thanks but the 0 won't clear on my calculator when I punch in a number with that code provided. For instance, I punched in 9 and it went to 09 instead. Same thing when I punch in 99. It also goes to 099. And when I calculate the numbers, they don't come up with a total, not even an integer in terms of addition and subtraction. I don't know what I'm doing here. Anyone know of a clean way to get the current time in the user's location that actually updates in real time? Meaning they load the page, they hang out for longer than a minute. Their system clock goes from 12:00 to 12:01, and that is reflected in the time display on the page?

Matt Leonard
@matty22
Feb 05 2016 04:47
@bighitbiker3 Right, but that would only be accurate if I loaded the page at exactly 12:00:00. If I loaded the page at 12:00:59, the system clock would roll over to 12:01 in 1 second, but my time display in the HTML wouldn't roll over to 12:01 for 60s
Elliott McNary
@bighitbiker3

This doubt is regarding the "Target HTML Elements with Selectors Using jQuery" section in the front end development tutorials. The tutorials already have the animate.css class and Jquery integrated in the background. I would like to know the procedure for the same in case if I want to use them on my local system. Thanks.

@adhok if you want to use jquery on your machine you mean? you have to import the library via zip and require them in your html or use a cdn link to require them

@RakshithNM right, so what is happening is when you re-size the screen, it reduces the margin between the elements so it fits on the page

@nikhil1011 there isn't an automatic way to do it if that is what you are asking. You would need to take screenshots of the projects and create your own grid for that
you could use bootstrap grid with bootstrap thumbnail component

@sean9 you need to set your options.text value in your function rather than outside of it

@ishanshukla97 I think you need to use two ways to loop over the values of both arrays, your methods assumes that the same value is always going to be in the same positon which isn't going to be the case.
var i, j;
for (i =0 ; i < someArr.length; i++) {
  for (j=0; j < someOtherArr.length; j++) {

@andrewchar I wouldn't set the background on the header to start with, html hearder is for you know the header of a section, generally containing h1, h2, h3..etc, additionally you have min-height: auto, if can do something like min-height: 100vh which is 100% of the viewport height

quick question. Is there a way to display variables in HTML?

for instance...

var x = 10

function eval() {
document.getElementById('screen').innerHTML = x;
}

So if I have a <p> element with the id = 'screen' it should change to 10 everytime I run eval() . All it is currently returning is "Object Screen".

@jessecronin - looks like it's working pretty nicely. I have one question about something that I tried (at random) - if I perform a calculation like "4 + 5 =", I get the correct answer of 9. Now, without clearing the calculator (or display), if I start entering other numbers, like "56", it just appends them to the current result of 9, and then add 1, the display then reads 957. I don't know if they have a prescribed way for this to work - it seems to me that a lot of calculators clear the current value if you start entering numbers rather than an operator. Just curious if you have any thoughts on this behavior? The display does track the final answer, it just seems like behavior that was a little foreign to me? But it's working for the most part... (I have yet to tackle this project, so I might find out how complicated it is!)
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Feb 05 2016 20:46

@Mogedi - I am not familiar with this project, since I haven't done it yet, but it looks like it is working. (It didn't open the stream that I clicked on that was supposedly active, but I don't know if you need to have an account or something to log in there?) Anyway, my main question is about responsive behavior. If you make the window really narrow, it puts scroll bars on the screen, which is okay. But I wondered if there was any thought to making this a little different in that mode, somehow changing up the layout of the columns or something? It looks fine, though, if it's working the way that they require the project to work.

I just decided to peek at the code - there is a syntax error in your javascript code. I'm not sure if that is impacting the behavior in any significant way, but in the CodePen JS panel it shows up with a red :exclamation: and an "unexpected string" error.

Another thing is that if you are strictly developing on CodePen, they use a template to generate the HTML page, filling in all of the sections from the various panel configuration settings and adding your CSS into the appropriate place. With the setup that you have, your CSS styles are being inserted at the top of the page, there are multiple <body> sections, some <script> tag in there after the closing </html> tag, maybe a few other things that are not valid HTML. If you are developing elsewhere and just pasting into CodePen, you might want to see if these things are affecting the way your page functions on CodePen when someone is viewing it?

I hope those are helpful comments?

Thank you @khaduch. You explained everything concisely and clearly. I will have to look into how to get my page to lay things out with different screen sizes, because I also noticed the same problem. It would probably be even worse on mobile if truth be told. And yes, my coding environment is not codepen, I do copy and paste, so I will have to look through the code to see if it functions the same on my native environment. Thanks again for the in-depth critique :+1:

@RDaniels34 - looks pretty good - I can't wait (haha) to get to this project, too. One thing that seems a little lacking in the graphics (maybe, I'm not trying to be critical) is that the buttons seem like they need a shadow (they might already have one? I might not be looking at it from the same perspective that you are?) but perhaps a more pronounced shadow on the bottom/right sides. It kind of looks like the display (which looks very nice!) has that type of shadow effect? I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product with all of the calculations going on!

Just one thing to advise you of - I'm guessing that you developed this in your own environment, outside of CodePen? The problem is that when you just plug it into CodePen, it inserts everything into a template and the result is a mashed up mess of HTML that is not valid. If you look at the "frame source" in FireFox (I don't know if other browsers do the same?) you'll see items highlighted in red and errors explained if you hover over that. If the calculator is functioning there as you intended maybe there is no problem, but it might be that with that behavior of CodePen, you could get something unexpected in your behavior?

I hope that is helpful?

@RDaniels34 :

$(this).html()

lets you retrieve the inner html of a clicked button. That way you can use a switch statement which can react to any button pressed, instead of creating a function for each button separately.

If you're just looking at it in the little screen that CodePen has in the chat it breaks. If you click on the link I provided it will open in your browser and it works fine...shadows and all...

@RDaniels34 also you can use JQuery to get a reply everytime a button is pressed and then do different things for each button id instead of making a bunch of functions
Ok
can anyone get the blue + and - buttons to be in a row instead of a column?

@PenJones Hi. Took a brief look at your code. You can use btn-group... but I only rewrote as little as possible.. to give you a starting point. Here it is:
    <br>
    <div id="variables" class="row text-center input-well">
         <div class="btn-group">
         <div class = "col-sm-1"> <button id="bPlus" class="btn btn-primary btn-group">+</button></div>
         <div class = "col-sm-1"><h1 id="breakT">5</h1></div>
         <div class = "col-sm-1"><button id="bMinus" class="btn btn-primary btn-group">-</button>
           </div> <!-- end of btn group -->
      </div>
CSS
#breakT{
  margin-left:5px;
  margin-top:-2px;
}
@PenJones Hope this helps. GL and happy coding

@PenJones you haven't used col-sm on your start/reset... and you didn't have any other elements in between (like h1).

yeah, but if I copy paste that code, then put in h1 it goes into a column instead of a row

@PenJones use what is billow (again,I just mod what you had, nothing else)... you will get more accustomed with using bootstrap the more you use it and experiment with it.
  <div id="mainContainer text-center">
    <div class="row text-center">
      <h1 id="timer" class="text-center">00:00</h1>
      <button id="Reset" class="btn btn-warning">Reset</button>
      <button id="Start" class="btn btn-success">Start</button>
    </div>
    <br>
    <div id="variables" class="row text-center input-well">
         <div class="row">
         <div class="btn-group">
         <div class = "col-xs-1"> <button id="bPlus" class="btn btn-primary btn-group">+</button></div>
         <div class = "col-xs-1"><h1 id="breakT">5</h1></div>
         <div class = "col-xs-1"><button id="bMinus" class="btn btn-primary btn-group">-</button>
           </div> <!-- end of btn group -->

@SwistakStyle you can use an API or put your quotes in array (just google quotes and copy/paste them in your array)
KingxBanana
@KingxBanana

@SwistakStyle The easiest way to do this is by just making an array, and putting some random quotes in there, and then picking a random number
