@avanbox dragging scripts in should really be done at the bottom of your html just before the body close tag. That way the css and the html are loaded … the js then has something to act on.

Hey guys! Working on the calculator zipline right now. Curious... What I have done is create a "string", (for example "2+2"), and when the equals sign is pressed I want that "string" evaluated. (So "2+2" then the equals button is pressed, so it should read out 4). Is it possible to "evaluate" a string, given the obvious NaN error if it isn't parsed correctly, (I will worry about error-checking later) so that it will read that way? Right now I've tried tempVal = "2+2" then calculatedVal = parseInt(tempVal) and then read calculatedVal which currently comes back as "2"... so apparently I'm doing something wrong. Thanks!

does anyone know if Bootstrap has the ability to make a column unit span more than 1 row?
Jenn Hardy
@smokeyLilac
Feb 09 2016 02:52
@mynameisal Good news: the rows are centered. Bad news: now my image sizing isn't working
also @mynameissal the centering isn't perfect but I think that's because I don't have bootstrap set up right on the page
Brett Guillory
@kurzninja
Feb 09 2016 02:57
@JennHardy all you have to do is include it on the page as a <link> tag
Jenn Hardy
@smokeyLilac
Feb 09 2016 02:59
At the top of my code @kurzninja ?
Brett Guillory
@kurzninja
Feb 09 2016 03:08
Well there's the CSS you have to include at the top
and then I believe there's also some Javascript you have to include near the bottom of your code
if you're doing this in Codepen, all you have to do is select it in the CSS tab, I believe it will automatically include the Javascript as well if you do
if you're not in codepen, just check out here:

@smokeyLilac
Feb 09 2016 03:10

It's been there since I first started the page
Brett Guillory
@kurzninja

Feb 09 2016 03:12
@mutantspore do I put that in under add classes to <html>?
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Feb 09 2016 03:12
yes you have to do it yourself.. a very very common issue on this help line
no just go to where you added jquery
and add in bootstrap.js too

@smokeyLilac
Feb 09 2016 03:13

add it after jquery as it’s dependant on that

Need some help with my Local Weather app. I'm using a .click() function to create the toggle between C and F. However I can't put that inside the function that gets geolocation and parses out the API weather object or I get function not defined errors in the console. So I need to get the weather object out to the global scope. Here's some code to assist:
//var apiKey = 810a0a8ee3d2a52f12f66932cfe8cf0c;

$(document).ready(function(){

    navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
        var lat = position.coords.latitude;
        var lon = position.coords.longitude;

        //Currently my currentTemp is hardcoded to degrees F. I can't put my onclick function inside of here or I get a function not defined error.
        //But I need to get the object data out to the global scope to use in other parts.
        $.getJSON("http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?lat=" + lat + "&lon=" + lon + "&APPID=810a0a8ee3d2a52f12f66932cfe8cf0c", function(json) {
            var weatherObj = json;
            var iconURL = "http://openweathermap.org/img/w/" + weatherObj.weather[0].icon + ".png"
            var currentTemp = Math.round(weatherObj.main.temp * 9/5 - 459.67);
            var imgPath;

            if (currentTemp >= 40) {
                imgPath = "img/pennyfarthing.jpg";
            } else {
                imgPath = "img/manOnBus.jpg";
            }

            document.getElementById("currentCity").innerHTML = weatherObj.name;
            document.getElementById("tempBlock").innerHTML = currentTemp + "&deg; F";
            $("#weatherIcon").html("<img src=" + iconURL + ">");
            document.getElementById("bikeOrBusImg").src = imgPath;
        });
    });

});

//Toggle switch for F or C
function setUnits() {
    if($('#cmn-toggle-7').prop('checked')) {
        var currentTemp = Math.round(weatherObj.main.temp * 9/5 - 459.67);
        console.log(currentTemp);
        document.getElementById("tempBlock").innerHTML = currentTemp + "&deg; F";

        console.log(currentTemp);
        document.getElementById("tempBlock").innerHTML = currentTemp + "&deg; C";
    }
}

//Set Date in UI to current date in user's location and format it nicely
var date = new Date().toDateString();
var dateArr = date.split(" ");
document.getElementById("date").innerHTML = dateArr[1] + " " + dateArr[2];

//Ping for the minute each second and update if necessary. Makes the clock functional in real time
//Set time in UI to current time
//Need to account for when the hour == 00
setInterval(function(){

    var hour = new Date().getHours();
    var amPm = "a";

    if (hour > 12) {
        hour -= 12;
        amPm = "p"
    }

but I came out with this https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&search=india&namespace=0&format=jsonfm. I am even unable to operate on the first one coz 'No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'null' is therefore not allowed access.'

@JennHardy the following is not meant to be negative…
I did have a look at your code when you first put it up a while ago but it was pretty messy and had a lot of wrong things in it so it was very hard to see what was wrong as a lot would have to be fixed. for example you had multiple id tags teh same (you can only have one of each). you have id’s in your div closing tags etc .. I got a headache and closed it . I also see you have used Imgur for your images… they don’t come up for me. It’s been a very common issue for campers. try http://postimage.org instead.
Jenn Hardy

Ok thanks for the feedback @mutantspore ... I waited too long to ask for help from others so that's how it ended up in a mess! I couldn't get postimage to work at all when I tried. They won't let me set up a password, then tell me to enter my email address and it sends me in a loop asking for my password then not letting me set one up

Hi, I just finished the "Symmetric Difference" challenge but I feel there should be a better solution than the mess I came up with. Can someone let me know if there is a better way to approach that challenge or give me any pointers? I don't like how I have multiple for loops and ifs. Thanks.
function sym(args) {
  var chkArr = [];
  for(i=0; arguments.length > i; i++) {
    chkArr.push(arguments[i]);
  }

  var symArr = chkArr.reduce(function(prev,cur) {

    var rtnArr = [];
    for(j=0; cur.length > j; j++) {
      if(prev.indexOf(cur[j]) < 0) {
        if(rtnArr.indexOf(cur[j]) < 0) {
          rtnArr.push(cur[j]);
        }
      }
    }

    for(k=0; prev.length > k; k++) {
      if(cur.indexOf(prev[k]) < 0) {
        if(rtnArr.indexOf(prev[k]) < 0) {
          rtnArr.push(prev[k]);
        }
      }
    }

    return rtnArr;

  }, []);

  return symArr;
}

What is the group name for things like: class, role, id, style, href?
Like what do you call them? e.g. "element properties" are the style something's attribute.
Brett Guillory
@kurzninja
Feb 09 2016 03:26
it depends on the context
in an HTML tag, those would be attributes
in CSS, some of those are considered selectors
Salman Shahid
@salman-shahid
Feb 09 2016 03:28
Ok, I'm trying to add an attribute to an element by id using jQuery. Here's what I've got so far:
      var elemID = ($(".ops:nth-child(" + (childCount - 1) + ")").prop('id'));
      $("#" + elemID).prop("OnClick", elemID + "Press()");
elemID works and returns ac
It should evalute out to:
$(#ac).prop("OnClick", "ac" + "Press()");
but the OnClick="acPress()" attribute is never added to the element.

Basically, you can open up a "tweet" page with a link and add text to the link so the text is passed to the "tweet" page.
E.g. for my one: "https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?hashtags=quotes&related=freecodecamp&text=" + QUOTE
So, you can use that as a link ref for a button..

Your whichQuotes variable is defined locally.
If you want to use it outside of that function you'll have to define it globally. so whichQuotes = 0; before the function and then remove the var from the function.

Minimax algorithm
Can anyone please help me understand the concept of depth in this algorithm? Does the author mean that we need to check for the number of empty squares left on the board?
In the last example the depth reads as 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4. I didn't get it.
Salman Shahid

@sigursiguros You shouldn't be able to press "." again if "." is already pressed once
Also, 3-6 gives -9 when it should be -3
Rex Schrader

Feb 09 2016 05:57
@coderNoob Imagine a blank board - Now make a mark. Now there are 8 possible second moves. for each of those 8 moves there are 7 possible next moves, and so on. Each "level" of moves that you go down is a level of depth. There are no more than 8 levels of depth, for a total of 9^3 possibles boards (duplicates included).
Err . . maybe 3^9

@RakshithNM First of all, I assume you mean the Portfolio. The items align underneath each other for smaller screens. Please look at the code for the Portfolio area. Bootstrap has classes for each screen size, but you just used col-md-4 for medium size. You can apply the other classes as well to the same div. Then have a look and decide whether to decrease or enlarge the element for the individual sizes (e.g. col-lg-5 instead of col-lg-4).

@andrewchar they probably need to be divs to do that
another option is to add this css:
.nav li {
    float: left;
}
that will force them to stay the same orientation even when screen resizes
if you do that you might add a bit of padding on the ul and maybe an additional class on those lis to differentiate them from any other navbar you end up adding
e.g.
.nav .footer-icons li {
    float: left;
}

@coderNoob Somewhat belatedly - Depth is how far down the search chain you are. On a board with one mark placed there are those 8 possible moves. That's depth 1. On any one of those moves there are 7 possible moves, that's depth 2. On any one of THOSE moves there are 6 possible moves, that's depth 3, and so on. It goes down to depth 8, I guess, where the board is full.

Hey folks! Quick question. Working on Calculator program and one part I want to do is for my "screen" I have an input field set to align right, so that way my numbers and what-not start on the right of the field and push left as I add more to it. I've decided that I'm going to have the string be shown like in the example on the Zipline, but both my calculator and theirs has the issue that if too much of the string is there to go beyond, it suddenly hard-stops at the left side then you can't see the new stuff you put into it. Anyway I can keep it "flowing" and having the left-side disappear instead of the right-side?

@sreeves89 hi. I just took a look, you basically want to be able to use more characters than what can be displayed at one time on the screen ?
Sam Reeves
@smreeves
Feb 09 2016 17:20
Yes. Since I am going to put in support for things like sin, cos and what-not, I'd want to be able to let the user keep going, but I think it would be more design friendly if they could see the most recent things they entered, and let the "old" (i.e. stuff on the left) flow out of the display.
The only thing I can think of is to truncate when we hit a certain string length, but not sure how design friendly that will be with different screen sizes. And not only that but since each character takes up slightly different sizes, getting it to truncate exactly may or may not be a nightmare.

@ninja-ml part of the issues is the geolocation is a async operation, so latitude and longitude don't equal anything till bindPosition is run, which is sometime after your url is being created.
Robert Uivarosi
@URobert
Feb 09 2016 17:53
@ninja-ml yw, and you will need a the id at the end to get the response. Did you test your api call with a console log? does get you what you need ?
@ninja-ml here is an example of how the URL have to look like:
  weatherApiUrl = 'http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?lat=' + currentLat + '&lon=' +    currentLong  + "&units=" + units + "&APPID=" + appId;

got burnt out on js for a bit ... time to do the front end stuff ... hopefully I'll be able to assimilate algo stuff requiring recursive array.reduce calls after I let it marinate a bit ... LOL ...
there are at least 3 of the challenges I probably spent 8 hours on ... just understanding how to solve the problem, and understanding solutions ... really got to know js better, though ...

It happens lol. I know I've spent atleast 1/2 a day stuck on a project because of a typo.. I'm glad I learnt about debugging a few days ago.

oh yeah ... console.log is your friend ...
I think if I were to design a course, the first thing I would teach people is how to debug, the second thing is how to use git, and the 3rd would be regular expressions ... LOL ...
fortunately, my long stints were just more in understanding more about either the solution for the problem (smallest common multiplier)...or understanding more about js -- steamroller, seek and destroy
I now have heavily commented versions of all 3 ... :)

Is there a guide for taking my code from jsfiddle or codepen and hosting it on the web?
I want to switch from jsfiddle to my desktop IDE

Hi guys, I've basically finished the Weather API but I've realized that it tells me the district where I live and not the city. So even though it is pretty specific, it says, for example: Kendall West, FL instead of Miami, FL. Why that might be?
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 09 2016 21:33
@Eddymogollon Its partly do to how ever openweathermap processes your requests and handles data on there end, but also geolocation is generally only so accurate, for instance it says I'm Claremont, tech I'm in Charlestown, I just happen to be pretty close to Claremont.

@jnmorse In the example they have in FCC it says Miami though! I wonder what the difference is
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 09 2016 21:38
@Eddymogollon the example uses another api for locations, though that one tells me I'm in a different state...
@Eddymogollon least the old one did, not haven't checked the newer example I noticed they had..

@jnmorse I technically finished it, perhaps after I finish styling it I might look into the source code from FCC to see any difference

@Eddymogollon I just 'finished' rewriting mine, on a kick of rewriting my projects using react right now. really should try to do the simon and tic tac toe one..
I even rewrote my pomodoro one at three times now...

@Eddymogollon
Feb 09 2016 21:43
@jnmorse That would be a great idea! I plan to refactor the other projects I've done too! Question, the Tic tac toe one, you just used HTML, CSS and JS without canvas, right?
Joseph Morse
@jnmorse
Feb 09 2016 21:45
@Eddymogollon guess wasn't clear enough, I haven't actually got to those two yet, I started them and sorta only used html, css, and javascript. not sure about doing things with canvas

@jnmorse I see, well good luck then! I plan to start the tictactoe one probably this week!

@mutantspore

well when the timer is not greater than zero you need to swap to the “other” timer value. To keep track of which you should be counting down, I used a “flag” called timerType.
for example.
if (timerType == 'session') { …. and in that if I set things up for the break time, cleared the clock face, sounded the alarm and changed the flag to be timerType = “break”. So obviously if the timerType was “break” i’d do a similar thing but for the session values. there is no need to actually stop the timer … just change the values. You only really need to stop it for “stop” or “reset” or maybe “pause"

This is what I ended up doing and it works great:

function decTime() {
  // AG: check to see if timer is for session or break
  if (!onBreak) {
    //fill the circle
    filler(countDown);
    // display the current count down
    showCount();
    // decrement the counter if it's not at zero
    if (countDown > 0) {
      countDown--;
    } else {
      // AG: transition from session to break
      onBreak = true;
      countDown = breakTimerSeconds;
    }
  } else {
    // unfill the circle
    unfiller(countDown);
    // display the current count down
    showCount();
    // decrement the counter if it's not at zero
    if (countDown > 0) {
      countDown--;
    } else {
      // AG: transition from break to session
      onBreak = false;
      countDown = workTimerSeconds;
    }
  }
}

https://jsfiddle.net/9fyk4qev/ i might use a little debugging help here :( random quote machine doesn't show quotes at all - it was working before, i had to quickly end my work and I messed something up
I thought that the API provider might have locked me out after using his api for 200 times in 60 minutes
but this doesn't work even on codepen, even from another PC and town

Hey everyone! I think I've finished my calculator app. I'm going to monkey with the background to make it a little easier, but otherwise all functionality I wanted to incorporate is done. If you have some time to look it over, I'd be grateful! I'm sure there are a few things I could tweak to make it better. Thanks! http://codepen.io/sreeves89/full/gPBzjK/

Bottom-left has a "back" button when I would imagine is similar to the CE functionality. Yes, I was a bit worried about "turning it on" but I liked that functionality since I was basing off of a real calculator that I had in front of me. Maybe either I'll put a note that it needs to be turned on or have it automatically come on as soon as someone starts pressing buttons.

Different question than usual. I built this pretty nice website in brackets and I'm not sure of the easiest way to put it on codepen without having to do a bunch of work to fix it to make it work.
any ideas?
